To know the availability of double fractionated palm olein (DFPL) for vegetable oil in commercial mayonnaise preparation, oxidative stability and stability to cold test of DFPL, soybean oil and blended oils (blended soybean oil with DFPL) were tested. Mayonnaises with these oils were prepared and then emulsion stability at low temperature $(-5^{\circ}C)$ were compared. The oxidative stability of vegetable oil by Rancimat test showed that induction time of DFPL (26.9 hr) was longer when compared with soybean oil (13.4 hr), and became longer with increase of DFPL ratio in the blended oil. Emulsion stability of mayonnaises at low temperature $(-5^{\circ}C)$ was decreased with the increase of DFPL ratio in the blended oil. But, mayonnaise with blended oil of below 20% DFPL was comparable to that with soybean oil only. Among quality characteristics of mayonnaises with soybean oil and blended oil (soybean oil 85% plus DFPL 15%) the latter showed stronger oxidative stability and less flavor reversion during high temperature treatment. This result suggested that the possibility of DFPL to substitute for vegetable oil in the preparation of commercial mayonnaise.

This study was carried out to compare the effects of different plant oil sources on lipid metabolism of insulin dependent diabetic mice. Streptozotocin-induced (65 mg/kg B.W.) diabetic mice were fed four kinds of experimental diets with 20% lipid, which composed of 10% lard, and 10% soy bean oil (SBO), 10% rice germ oil (RGO), 10% rice brab oil (RBO) and 10% sesame oil (SSO) respectively, for 7 weeks. Diet intake, body weight, organs weights and lipids levels of serum, liver and feces were measured. There was no significant difference in diet intake and body weight among experimental groups. But the concentrations of serum triglyceride of RGO and RBO groups, and of serum total cholesterol of RGO and SSO groups were lower than those of the others. The hepatic total cholesterol level was the lowest in RGO group. The contents of total lipid and total cholesterol excreted in feces of RGO and RBO groups were higher than those of SBO and SSO groups. These results suggested that rice germ oil can effectively reduce serum triglyceride level and hepatic total cholesterol concentration of insulin dependent diabetic mice than rice bran oil, soy bean oil and sesame oil, and hypolipidemic effect of rice germ oil be due to increasing fecal lipid excretion. But we need to investigate the more detailed factors on lipid reducing effect in rice germ oil and rice bran oil.

The effect of dietary fish oil ( mackerel oil : MO, eel oil : EO) on energy utilization in rats was studied with measurements of various tissue lipoprotein lipase( LPL ) and live and heart mitochondrial respiration. Fatty acid composition of mitrochondrial inner membrane matrix was also investigated. Dietary fat level was 10%( w/w) and reference groups were fed soybean oil (SO), repeseed oil ( RO) and beef tallow( BT ). Activity of LPL was about 60% higher in post-heparin plasma and 2 to 3 times higher in adipose tissue of BT group than fish oil or vegetable oil group. But there was no significant difference between fish oil and vegetable oil groups. Inclusion of EO above 2% (w/w) in dietary fat with fille oil of BT, markedly reduced both post -heparin plasma and adipose tissue LPL. Effects of MO and EO were not different in adipose tissue LPL, but EO was more effective than MO, in reducing post -heparin plasma LPL when mixed fat with varying amount of fish oil was used. Hepatic mitochondria isolated from fish oil-fed group showed the lowest rate of respiration but had P/O ratio comparable to SO and BT groups. On the other hand, cardiac mitochondria of fish oil group showed no difference in all the mitochondrial respiration parameters observed RO group had lowest P/O ratio both in hepatic and cardiac mitochondria. Fatty acid compositions of mitochondrial lipid differ between SO, RO, BT and MO groups, notably in the content of $C_{22:1}$ fatty acid.
The possibility of rapid non-destructive qualitative and quantitative analysis of vegetable oils such as perilla, com, soybean and rapaseed oils in sesame oils was evaluated. A calibration equation calculated by MPLS(Modified Partial Least Squares) regression technique was developed and coefficients of determination for perilla oil, com oil, soybean oil and rapaseed oil contents were 0.9992, 0.9694, 0.9795 and 0.9790 respectively. According to the data obtained from validation study, $R^2$ of contents of perilla, com, soybean, rapaseed oils were 0.997, 0.848, 0.957 and 0.968, and SEP of content of them 0.747, 5.069, 3.063 and 3.000 by MPLS respectively. The results indicate that the NIRS procedure can potentially be used as a non-destructive analysis method for the rapid and simple measurement of sesame oil mixed with other vegetable oils. The detection limits of the NIRS for perilla oil, com oil, soybean oil and rapaseed oil were presumed as 2%, $15{\sim}20%,\;15{\sim}20%$ and 10%, respectively.

Study on the instability of waste plastic's thermal pyrolysis oil was carried out for the purpose of improving its quality. The reaction of pyrolysis oil with ozone changed double bonds into aldehydes and ketone, estimated that HDPE pyrolysis oil contained $\sim45$ wt% 1-alkene type olefins, and PP pyrolysis oil did $\sim73$ wt% olefins, which consisted of $\sim47$ wt% secondary and $\sim20$ wt% primary alkenes. The dark brown color and odor of pyrolysis oil were improved by eliminating double bonds, indicated that they were directly related to unsaturated hydrocarbons. Container test showed that metal can affected oil quality worse than the brown glass bottle. Antioxidant added into pyrolysis oil was consumed up to 90% within $2\sim3$ days and the wt. composition of unsaturated hydrocarbons in pyrolysis oil was not changed within 50 days, inferring that instability of pyrolysis oil due to unsaturated bonds can be stabilized by antioxidants. Adsorption test on silica gel, activated carbon and alumina to remove precipitates in oil produced a good result, but not enough to remove moisture. However, cheap anhydrous sodium carbonate showed the best removal efficiency of moisture as well as precipitates in oil. Therefore the pyrolysis oil quality improvement was accomplished by applying anhydrous $Na_2CO_3$ into the production plant.

With the rapid development of oil and chemical industry in the late 20C, massive transportation of oil by oil tanker vessel has grown and it caused the big oil pollution accidents. When oil spill from the oil tanker, damages reach into the astronomical figures in economically and damages affect wide area and many people with break the balance of ecosystem. Recently in Korea, the oil pollution accidents has occurred frequently as growing of oil consumption and it caused large-scale damages to the victim. Oil pollution in Korean offshore takes not only korean fishermen from their life ground and break the ecosystem but it takes too much time and money to recover. To minimize oil pollution damages, it is necessary to make pre-caution effort as a ship owner and relevant government bodies should endeavor to prevent from more damages. But once oil pollution accidents occurs in territorial sea, compensation for victim fishermen is very important. But it is true that compensation is not paid to victim smoothly. So this study aims at the problems of oil pollution compensation to the Korean victim and find the best way to get reasonable compensation.

This study examined effects of crude oil on the phase II drug-metabolizing enzymes UDP-glucuronosyl transferase (UDPGT) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) in mussel Mytilus edulis and rockfish Sebastes schlegeli, a representative bivalve and a culture fish, respectively. This work also intended indirectly to evaluate the post impact recovery from the massive oil tanker spillage accidents occurred during the summer of 1995 in the sea area off Yosu City, Chonnam. For these, enzyme activities of UDPGT and GST were examined in the fish and mussel following laboratory exposure to fresh crude oil, weathered oil, field-obtained oil residues, or in the field biota samples. Decreased GST activity was observed in rock fish following exposure to oil-soluble fraction (OSF) of fresh oil. A similar diminished GST activity was also observed after OSF of artificially weathered oil. OSF of field oil residues retrieved from the spillage area approximately 1 year later also exerted a slight inhibition of GST to rockfish. There was neither a change in UDPGT in rockfish, nor were there changes in mussel in both enzymes to any oil fractions. We could not observe any difference in the two enzymes either in rockfish or mussel sampled from the field during $1.5{\sim}2.0$ years post spillage, indicating that their enzyme systems might had been recovered by the sampling time. In conclusion, it seems that the inhibition of GST activity in rockfish is a biomarker response to crude oil exposure. The results, however, must be interpreted with care, as the inhibition nay reflect various factors such as oil concentration, duration and water temperature.

This study was designed to analyze the chemical composition and antioxidant activity of various vegetable oils (pumpkin seed oil, camellia seed oil, red pepper seed oil and peanut oil) using adsorbents (active carbon, acid clay, kaolin). Their chemical composition was analyzed by GCMS. Their antioxidant activity was evaluated by measuring their DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity. After the treatment with the adsorbents, the contents of most of the fatty acids and active ingredients contained in the four kinds of vegetable oils were reduced. After the treatment with the three adsorbents, the linoleic acid and erythrodiol contents of the pumpkin seed oil were reduced. In the case of the camellia seed oil, the fatty acids content was decreased, but there was no loss of vitamin E after the acid clay treatment. The content of the compound capsaicin, which forms part of the spicy component of red pepper seed oil, was reduced by 53.33% after the acid clay treatment. The peanut oil showed the lowest loss of sitosterol compound in the group treated with active carbon. The antioxidant activity was observed to be in the order of pumpkin seed oil (kaolin>acid clay>active carbon), camellia seed oil (acid clay>kaolin>active carbon), red pepper seed oil (kaolin>acid clay>active carbon) and peanut oil (active carbon>acid clay>kaolin).
Fatty acid composition of sesame oil could be distinguished from that of rapeseed oil and soybean oil by the content of linolenic acid. The relative composition of each fatty acid revealed the clear difference between sesame oil and other vegetable oils except corn oil. Ricebran oil was different from sesame oil in the relative composition of palmitic acid with respect to stearic acid and cottonseed oil in oleic acid to linoleic acid. ${\delta}^{13}C$ of corn oil was $19.40%_{\circ}$, in oleic acid and $-17.11%_{\circ}$, in linoleic acid, while that of sesame oil was $-27.60%_{\circ}$ in oleic acid and $-27.70%_{\circ}$ in linoleic acid. Therefore, most adulterant could be detected by comparing the ratio of fatty acids in vegetable oils except corn oil. It could, however, be detected by comparing carbon isotope ratio in the case of corn oil.

After the Sewol ferry-sinking incident in 2014, the public interest in safety at sea increased. In order to save and secure the initial response time required for sea rescues, not only the rescue organization, but also the victim needs to save and maintain golden time to secure the necessary time for rescue personnel. The purpose of this study was to investigate ways to maintain the psychological stability of victims during their rescue in the case of a mass rescue operation by using the oil boom installed on board oil spill response vessels. Through buoyancy tests and the development of oil booms in sea areas, it confirmed the buoyancy of two adults weighing 70 kg each per meter of oil boom could be maintained when a lifeline was installed on the side of the oil boom, and that it was possible to keep afloat four persons weighing 70 kg each on both sides of the oil boom. It also confirmed the buoyancy for three adults weighting 70 kg each per eight meters was maintained when riding on the top of the oil boom. As a method of rescue, it was found that the fastest and most accurate way to rescue victims was a rescue boat held at the rear end of the oil boom to lead to victims. In conclusion, the rescue team could utilize the oil boom installed on board the oil spill response vessel located near the marine accident site to save and secure the initial response time required for the rescue team to arrive. The victims in distress holding onto the lifeline or riding on the top of oil boom kept afloat at sea could maintain their psychological stability until the mass rescue operation initiated.
