  • The likelihood of failure for the stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of caustic cracking, which affect to a risk of facilities, was analyzed through the risk based-inspection using API-581 BRD. We found that SCC of the caustic cracking was occurred above 5 % NaOH concentration, and the technical module subfactor (TMSF) was maximized for above 50 % concentration. The heat traced and monitoring were not sensitive to the TMSF with NaOH concentration and temperature. But the steam out was more of less affect minimum value of the TMSF. Also, the inspection number, the inspection effectiveness, and the year since inspection were very sensitive to the TMSF with NaOH concentration and temperature. Therefore, the plan of next inspection will be established with compositively considering those at once.

  • Changes occurring in jute and coir fiber composites with 2-8% concentration of a NaOH treatment for 24 h were investigated, respectively, for void content, microscopy images, mechanical properties and water absorption. The jute and coir fibers were vacuum dried before molding composite specimens. Mechanical properties indicated good adhesion between natural fibers and PP. Jute fibers, when alkali-treated with 2% concentration for 24 h, showed best improvement in tensile strength by 40% and modulus by 9%, respectively, while coir fibers, when alkali-treated with 6% concentration for 24 h, showed best improvement in tensile strengths by 62% and modulus by 17%, respectively. With 2% concentration of alkali-treatments, the elongation of jute and coir composites reached 8% and 13.5%, respectively. Moisture absorption for jute and coir composites are 50% and 60% lower than untreated fiber composites, respectively.

  • In this study, the control system of sodium hydroxide was demonstrated to systemize hydrolysis process in polyester dyeing. We mainly focused on the application method of acid-alkali titration for the polyester hydrolysis machine of liquor-flow type. Industrial pH meter with electrode type was used for identifying equivalence point. Three units which were analogue-to-digital card, microprocessor and digital output card were used to control NaOH concentration in the control part of the system. The yielded data are translated to the microprocessor through analogue-digital interfacing card. After calculating, NaOH concentration in NaOH storage tank was controlled through the digital output card and solenoid valves.

  • Effects of alkali swelling of HwBKP (hardwood bleached kraft pulp) at a low concentration below 2 percent (based on the oven-dried weight of pulp) on handsheet properties were investigated. Swelling treatment of HwBKP was performed at various low NaOH concentrations with/without beating. Then, the changes in handsheet properties were evaluated in terms of bulk, optical and strength properties. It was found that bulk was slightly increased when the alkali concentration was increased. When the pulp was only swollen without beating, paper optical and strength properties was slightly decreased or not changed with alkali concentration. When the pulp was alkali-swollen after beating, paper strength and opacity showed almost no changes while brightness was increased. When the pulp was beaten after NaOH swelling, alkali concentration showed almost no effect on brightness and opacity of paper. Paper strength was slightly decreased with alkali concentration, suggesting that alkali pretreatment before refining could adversely affect refining efficiency.

  • In this study, effects of alkali swelling at low concentration below 2 percent on properties of hardwood bleached kraft pulp (HwBKP) were elucidated. Swelling treatment of HwBKP was performed at various NaOH concentrations with/without beating. Then, the swelling characteristics of pulp fiber was evaluated by measuring the solvent retention values such as water retention value (WRV) and isopropyl alcohol retention value (LRV). It was found that fiber characteristics were influenced by NaOH swelling even at low alkali concentration and beating treatment as well. The values of WRV and LRV were decreased when the alkali concentration was increased. It is the result from the decreased acidic groups of pulp which were formed during beating. The acidic groups could be neutralized and then removed by alkali. The difference between WRV and LRV was decreased with increasing alkali concentration while the difference was increased when the alkali swollen pulp was beaten. In addition, the crystalline structure of HwBKP was almost not changed while the crystallinity was influenced by swelling treatment at a low alkali concentration.

  • The behavior of ozone in $NH_4OH$ was investigated to evaluate the solution as a cleaning chemical of the silicon wafer. The solubility of ozone in DI(Deionized) water increased as the oxygen flow-rate decreased and ozone generator power increased. Ozone in DI water showed solubility of 100 ppm or higher at room temperature. Ozone concentration was stabilized at the range of ${\pm}2ppm$ by controlling oxygen flow rate and ozone generator power. On the contrary, the solubility of ozone in $NH_4OH$ was very low and strongly depended on the concentration of $NH_4OH$ and pH. The redox potential of ozone was saturated within 10 minutes in DI water and decreased rapidly with the addition of $NH_4OH$. The behavior of ozone in $NH_4OH$ is well explained by redox potential calculation.

  • Siliceous mudstones are embedded on a large scale in the Tertiary formations of Pohang area. Some useful zeolites such as NsP, (Na, TMA)P, analcime and hydroxysodalite were synthesized from the siliceous mudstones by treating with the variety of solution, i.e ., NaOH, NaOH+NaCl, NaOH, NaOH+$NaAlO_2$and NaOH+TMAOH at the low-temperature hydrothermal system ranging 60~12$0^{\circ}C$. Major precursor of zeolites is found as opal-CT in the zeolite-forming reaction. Smectite, which is included in considerable amounts in the mudstone, appears to play a major role of Al-source in the zeolite synthesis. In comparison, chalcedonic quartz and mica are rather insoluble in alkaline solution, and thus, these are observed as major impurities in the reaction products. An addition of $NaAlO_2$to NaOH solution is effective for eliminating these impurities in the reaction procedure, through these are partly dissolved when elevating the reaction temperature, concentration, and time. Phase change from NaP to hydroxysodalite takes place at the NaOH concentrations of 3.0~4.0 M, and the reaction is not sensitive to the temperature shift. NaP is more stable at lower NaOH concentration and higher activity of $Na_{+}$ whereas analcime is sensitive to the temperature change and stable at higher than $100^{\circ}C$ and 2.0~4.0 M in NaOH concentration. For the pure NaP synthesis without any other products, the treatment of mudstones with 1:1 solution of NaOH and $NaAlO _2$ turns out to be quite effective. NaP was successfully synthesized together with analcime at $100^{\circ}C$ as well as lower concentrations of NaOH+NaCl solution. In addition, the organic type, (Na, TMA)P was formed together with smectite in the 1:1 solution of NaOH and TMAOH.

  • In order to recover pure alumina from black dross, leaching of mechanically activated black dross with NaOH solution resulted in an aluminate solution containing a small amount of Si(IV). Selective adsorption of Si(IV) onto hydrotalcite was investigated from 5 M NaOH solution where the concentration of Al(III) and Si(IV) was 13000 and 150 mg/L, respectively. Only Si(IV) was selectively loaded onto hydrotalcite, while Al(III) remained in the solution. Effect of the calcination treatment of hydrotalcite and concentration of calcined hydrotalcite and NaOH on the loading of Si(IV) was investigated. Although the loading percentage of Si(IV) was low from 5 M NaOH solution, most of the Si(IV) was removed by adjusting the concentration of NaOH by 48 times dilution with water when the concentration of calcined hydrotalcite was higher than 4.5 g/L. The loading of Si(IV) onto calcined hydrotalcite followed Freundlich adsorption isotherm.

  • Carbon dioxide concentration of railroad passenger cabin is obliged to be kept lower than guideline values of 'Indoor air quality guideline for public transportations', but actual carbon dioxide concentration frequently exceeds this guideline value during the morning and evening rush hours. For improving comfortability and satisfaction of passengers, concentration control method using $Al_2O_3$ adsorbents was presented. The adsorbent is made from $Al_2O_3$ and LiOH. $Al_2O_3$ perform as a frame and LiOH as a chemical adsorbent. The adsorbent performance experiment was carried out by measuring concentration change of Carbon dioxide in terms of flow, initial concentration and amount of adsorbent. It is expexted that the obtained results will be used to lower carbon dioxide concentration of railroad passenger cabin.

  • Combustion using oxygen enriched air is an energy saving technology that can increase thermal efficiency by improving the burning rate and by increasing the flame temperature. Flame figures, OH radical intensities, temperature distributions and emissions concentration were examined according to oxygen enriched concentration(OEC) in a turbulent diffusion flat flame. As long as the oxygen enriched concentration was increased, the length and volume of the flat flame was decreased while OH radical intensity was raised and the flame temperature was increased. However, RMS of the fluctuating temperature was decreased, and more homogeneous temperature field was formed. Thermal NO also was increased with increase of oxygen enriched concentration, but CO was decreased due to the increase of chemical reaction rate.
