Performance Analysis of a OFDM System for Wireless LAN in Indoor Wireless Channel (실내 무선 채널 환경에서 무선 LAN용 OFDM 시스템의 성능 분석)

  • In this paper, the system performance with the convolution code using a Viterbi decoding and the one tap LMS equalizer applied to the OFDM system, which is suitable for IEEE 802.1la wireless LAN in indoor wireless channel, is analyzed through computer simulation. Indoor wireless channel is modeled as Rician fading channel, and QPSK and 16QAM scheme are used for subchannel modulation. In Rician fading channel with the power ratio of the direct path signal to the scattered signals, K=5 dB, BER of $10^{-4}$ is satisfied if the SNRs of the QPSK/OFDM and the 16QAM/OFDM are 8.6 dB and 19.2 dB in hard decision and 5.3 dB and 9.8 dB in soft decision, respectively. Compared with convolution code scheme, it is observed that 16QAM/OFDM system with the one tap LMS equalizer has the performance improvement of 8.6 dB and 2 dB in hard decision and soft decision, respectively.

Degradation of OFDM Signal Performance by Chromatic Dispersion in a Several 10 Gbit/s Mobile Front-haul Link (수 10 Gbit/s 모바일 프론트홀 링크에서 색분산에 의한 OFDM 신호 전송성능 열화 분석)

  • In this paper, an inter-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) sub-carrier distortion due to fiber chromatic dispersion is investigated. The fiber chromatic dispersion induces phase difference among OFDM sub-carriers, resulting in non-symmetric peak to average power ratio (PAPR) inducing inter-OFDM distortion. Experiments to confirm the fiber dispersion are performed in a direct-detection optical front-haul link. Quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) encoded OFDM symbols at 25 Gbit/s are transmitted over 100 km fiber and the resulting error vector magnitude (EVM) of 40 % is observed.

  • OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) is widely used in wideband wireless communication systems due to its excellent performance. However, OFDM has a disadvantage of high peak-to-average power ratio and SC-FDE(Single-Carrier with Frequency-Domain Equalization) was introduced to overcome the drawback. SC-FDE is less sensitive to nonlinear power amplifiers than OFDM while its complexity and performance is comparable. This paper proposes a frequency diversity technique for single-antenna BPSK SC-FDE systems using repeated QPSK transmissions with rearranged transmission patterns.

Novel Technique for Obtaining Diversity Gain Using Symbol Share In OFDM Systems (OFDM 시스템에서의 심볼 공유를 이용한 다이버시티 이득 획득 기법)

  • In this paper, the technique for obtaining diversity gain without increasing the antenna is proposed using symbol share in the OFDM systems. Proposed technique groups symbols which are mapped into different sub-carriers and these symbols are modulated by proposed constellation. Proposed constellation has the identical minimum distance with QPSK modulation constellation and obtain more frequency diversity gain. Also, proposed modulation scheme make it possible to increase data rate using subcarriers allocated symbols.

The Study on The Application of QAM-OFDM Scheme for Nonlinear Satellite Channel (비선형 위성 채널에서 QAM-OFDM 방식의 적용에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, the performance for the non-linear satellite channel including the characteristics of group delay and gain ripple of transponder is analyzed with multi-level QAM-OFDM schemes. Comparing the BER performances between general OFDM and CI(Carrier Interferometry)-OFDM for various QAM schemes, the degree of performance improvement is presented in AWGN environments for specified nonlinear characteristics. The simulations are performed with the 36MHz bandwidth of transponder channel and 120Mbps transmission rate for QPSK, 8QAM, 16QAM, 32QAM, 64QAM schemes between normal and worst case condition. It is shown that the improvement measure by the CI-OFDM for the group delay of channel and nonlinear characteristic of HPA outperforms that for the gain ripple in the case of higher level QAM scheme in normal condition. And the simulation results show that the additional techniques like the channel coding and compensation scheme against the nonlinear characteristic are required for 32QAM and higher level QAM in worst case condition.

  • In this paper we design STBC-OFDM systems by applying several STBC schemes to the OFEM system and show their comparative analysis results obtained through computer simulations under Rayleigh fading environments, considering the effect of channel estimation error. We first consider the space-time coding algorithms of major STBC schemes, together with their demodulation algorithms. We then select the OFDMparameters considering mobile environments and design the STBC-OFDM systems by choosing one of digital modulation schemes such as QPSK, BPSK, 16QAM, 64QAM, and 256QAM according to the transmission rate, and describe the block diagrams of the demodulator and channel estimator. We finally compare and analyze the BER performances of the STBC-OFDM systems according to the transmission rate and the number of receive antennas.

Improvement of Power Efficiency of HPA by the PAPR Reduction and Predistorter in MIMO-OFDM (MIMO-OFDM에서 PAPR 저감 및 사전 왜곡기에 의한 HPA의 전력 효율 개선)

  • Tn this paper, we evaluate the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) performance in a space-time block code (STBC) multi-input multi-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) system using selected mapping (SLM) and partial transmit sequences (PTS) approaches. SLM and PTS methods are used to decrease the nonlinear distortion and to improve the power efficiency of the nonlinear high power amplifier(HPA) in the MIMO-OFDM system. In simulation result, when compared with the existing MIMO-OFDM system using QPSK, the PTS method reduces the PAPR about 5dB while the SLM method can reduce about 3.5 dB. Also, we find the BER performance of the MIMO-OFDM system with and without the predistorter in front of the HPA. When the predistorter is used, the input back-off (IBO) of 4 dB is required in the PTS method, and IBO of 6 dB in the SLM method to closely conform to the linear amplifier. If the method of improving the PAPR is not used, the value of IBO of 8 dB is required.

  • A new technique, which can increase the channel bandwidth in an optical wireless orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) link based on a light emitting diode (LED), is proposed. The technique uses adaptive sampling to convert an OFDM signal to a sparse waveform. In compressive sensing (CS), a sparse signal that is sampled below the Nyquist/Shannon limit can be reconstructed successively with sufficient measurements. The data rate of the proposed CS-based visible light communication (VLC)-OFDM link increases from 30.72 Mb/s to 51.2 Mb/s showing an error vector magnitude (EVM) of 31 % at the quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) symbol.

Channel Estimation Scheme Using Modified ICA in MIMO-OFDM Systems (MIMO-OFDM 시스템에서 Modified ICA를 이용한 채널 추정 기법)

  • If channel coefficients errors exist in MIMO-OFDM systems, the performance degradation of systems will occurs. In order to improve the performance of MIMO-OFDM systems, the technique of obtaining accurate channel estimation in multipath fading channel is necessary. In this paper, we introduce and propose new channel estimation-modified ICA algorithm. Simulation results shows from BER and SER curves which compare the proposed algorithm under time-varying Rayleigh fading with perfect known channel. The result of channel estimation by the proposed algorithm in this simulation, it shows that PDF(amplitude of channel) are close to the case with perfect known channel at the receiver with respect to uncoded QPSK/16-QAM/64-QAM modulation. Also, we can see that BER and SER curves are very close to the case with perfect known channel. Therefore, we see that the proposed algorithm have a good performance in MIMO-OFDM systems.

PAPR Reduction using Pre-emphasis and Clipping in OFDM Communication System

  • DFDM is a good candidate for beyond-3G high-speed wireless communication application because of the robustness to the intersymbol interference and multipath fading. However. an OFDM signal has a serious problem of the high PAPR, which results in the significant nonlinear distortion when it passes through a nonlinear high power amplifier. We propose a new PAPR reduction method using pre-emphasis and clipping. Via the proposed method, the OFDM output signal can have a low PAPR and BER improvement. Then. de-emphasis process is requisite in OFDM receiver. PAPR is reduced to about 5.7 ㏈ at the CCDF= 10$\^$-3/ when the subcarrier number is 16, QPSK modulation is used. pre-emphasis change point Is 3/9 of the peak amplitude of the IFFT output and clipping level is 11 in the IFFT output amplitude. The required SNR at BER=10$\^$-3/ the proposed system is improved by 2 dB than that of the original OFDM system.
