  • Native oak tree species dominate the deciduous forests of South Korea. Although the acorns of these oak trees represent the main food source for many wildlife species, information pertaining to their nutrient composition and associated seasonal changes is limited. Thus, the objective of this study was to describe the seasonal changes in the acorn nutrient composition of six oak species in terms of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and sodium (Na) concentrations, Quercus acutissima, Q. aliena, Q. mongolica, Q. variabilis, Q. dentata, and Q. serrata. The results indicated that N concentrations of Q. aliena acorns were constant, whereas those of Q. dentata changed over the seasons. Those of Q. acutissima acorns were higher in summer and autumn but Q. mongolica acorns were higher in spring and summer. Q. serrata acorns were highest in autumn but Q. variabilis acorns were found to be the lowest in N concentration. P concentrations of acorns of six species tended to decline in the summer but increased in the spring and autumn. Ca and Mg concentrations showed an obvious trend of decline over the seasons for all species except Q. mongolica. Na concentrations of Q. aliena, Q. dentata, and Q. serrata acorns were constant over the seasons whereas those of Q. dentata tended to increase. Q. variabilis acorns were highest in autumn but Q. acutissima acorns were lowest in Na concentration. Overall, these results showed that acorn nutrient composition varies by season, and that the nature of the variability is largely species dependent.

  • The study was carried out to screen mutagenicity of smoking materials for the determination of optimum smoking temperature for meat products. Wood materials employed for smoking were oak and apple trees. Temperatures of the generator for manufacturing of smoke flavoring were set to 250$^{\circ}C$, 400$^{\circ}C$ and 500$^{\circ}C$, respectively. Mutagenic activities of smoke flavoring were assayed according to Ames test using Salmonella typhimurium TA98 and TA 100. In oak wood smoke flavoring, Salmonella typhimurium TA98 without S-9 mix showed strong mutagenic activities at the concentration of 6$\mu\textrm{g}$/plate(250$^{\circ}C$), 4$\mu\textrm{g}$/plate(400$^{circ}C$) and 6$\mu\textrm{g}$/plate(500$^{\circ}C$). Salmonella typhimurium TA100 with S-9 mix showed strong mutagenic activities at the concentration of 10$\mu\textrm{g}$/plate(250$^{\circ}C$), 20$\mu\textrm{g}$/plate(400$^{\circ}C$) and 10$\mu\textrm{g}$/plate(500$^{\circ}C$). Salmonella typhimurium TA98 with S-9 mix showed strong mutagenic activities at the concentration of 30$\mu\textrm{g}$/plate(250$^{\circ}C$), 40$\mu\textrm{g}$/plate(400$^{\circ}C$) and 20$\mu\textrm{g}$/plate(500$^{\circ}C$). Salmonella typhimurium TA100 with S-9 mix showed strong mutagenic activities at the concentration of 30$\mu\textrm{g}$/plate(250$^{\circ}C$), 50$\mu\textrm{g}$/plate(400$^{\circ}C$) and 20$\mu\textrm{g}$/plate(500$^{\circ}C$). Salmonella typhimurium TA100 without S-9 mix showed strong mutagenic activities at the concentration of 10$\mu\textrm{g}$/plate(250$^{\circ}C$), 20$\mu\textrm{g}$/plate(400$^{\circ}C$) and 20$\mu\textrm{g}$/plate(500$^{\circ}C$). Salmonella typhimurium TA98 with S-9 mix showed strong mutagenic activities at the concentration of 30$\mu\textrm{g}$/plate(250$^{\circ}C$), 40$\mu\textrm{g}$/plate(400$^{\circ}C$) and30$\mu\textrm{g}$/plate(500$^{\circ}C$). Salmonella typhimurium TA100 with S-9 mix showed strong mutagenic activities at the concentrations 30$\mu\textrm{g}$/plate(500$^{\circ}C$). Salmonella typhimurium TA100 with S-9 mix showed strong mutagenic activities at the concentration of 30$\mu\textrm{g}$/plate(250$^{\circ}C$), 20$\mu\textrm{g}$/plate(400$^{\circ}C$) and 30$\mu\textrm{g}$/plate(500$^{\circ}C$). From these results, it could be concluded that optimum smoking temperature for meat products should be set below 400$^{\circ}C$, that the compounds like benzo[a]pyrene etc. contain a variety of mutagenic potentials, which could be generated at the higher smoking temperature.

  • Recently, the incidence of oak wilt disease has been increasing in Korea, resulting in an increasing number of dead trees. In this study, we performed sawdust bag cultivation of shiitake (Lentinula edodes) using oak wilt-diseased logs and measured the antioxidant activities of the resulting mushrooms. For sawdust media, 4 types of logs (healthy, infected, dead, and fumigated ones) were used. As inocula, three strains of L. edodes (NIFoS 764, Sanjo 701ho, and Sanmaru 2ho) were used. The productivity of L. edodes from dead logs was similar to that from healthy logs. Except for the Sanmaru 2ho strain, fumigated logs and infected logs yielded a lower productivity of L. edodes compared to healthy logs. In terms of antioxidant activity, L. edodes grown on sawdust from fumigated logs showed higher values than those from other logs.

• This paper suggests an integrated method for discovering knowledge from a large database. Our approach applies an attribute-oriented concept hierarchy ascension technique to extract generalized data from actural data in databases, induction of decision trees to measure the value of information, and knowledge reduction of rough set theory to remove dispensable attributes and attribute values. The integrated algorithm first reduce the size of database for the concept generalization, reduces the number of attributes by way of elimination condition attributes which have little influence on decision attribute, and finally induces simplified decision rules removing the dispensable attribute values by analyzing the dependency relationships among the attributes.

  • The hazelnut leaf holer (Anoplus roboris Sufr,, Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is a devastating pest of hazelnut and oak trees. It causes approximately 20-30% economic damage to hazelnut production per year in Turkey. In the present study, in order to fond a more effective and safe biological control agent against A. roboris, we investigated the bacterial flora of the hazelnut leave holer, and tested them for insecticidal effects on it. According to morphological, physiological and biochemical tests bacterial flora were identified as Bacillus circulans (Ar1), Bacillus polymyxa (Ar2), Enterobacter sp. (Ar3) and Bacillus sphaelicus (Ar4). Insecticidal effects of bacterial isolates were performed on adult A. roboris. The highest insecticidal effect determined was 67% by B. sphaericus within eight days. The insecticidal effects of the other isolates (Ar1, Ar2 and Ar3) were determined as 33%, 47% and 47% within the same period, respectively.

  • A chromate-resistant white rot fungus, Inonotus cuticularis, abundant in oak trees, was isolated for chromate removal and detoxification of chromate. Inonotus cuticularis was also investigated for an optimal waste treatment system. The screened cells were able to reduce an initial chromate concentration of as high as 1,300 ppm. Cell growth kinetics showed that the optimum culture conditions in flasks were at $33^{\circ}C$ and pH 4.2. Furthermore, the cells were able to remove $54\%$ of the initial chromate by a two-stage operation based on the combination of a fermentor and airlift reactor.
