  • For the study of environmental application of natural zeolites (NZ) and red mud (RM), which are discharged from various industrial fields, the catalytic ozonation of 2-butaone (methyl ethyl ketone, MEK) was performed using the Mn-loaded NZ prepared according to the Mn content of 1, 3, 5, 7, and 10 wt%. By the addition of Mn to NZ, the BET (Brunaure-Emmett-Teller) specific surface area of Mn/NZ catalysts decreased while the ratio of Mn3+/[Mn3++Mn4+] intensively increased. Besides, the addition of Mn component to NZ increased the ratio of adsorbed oxygen (Oadsorbed) toward lattice oxygen (Olattice), Oadsorbed/Olattice from 0.076 of NZ to 0.465 of 10 wt% Mn/NZ according to the amount of Mn. It is known that the proportion of two species, Mn3+ and Oadsorbed, would greatly affect the catalytic activity. However, the balancing between the paired species, Mn3+ vs. Mn4+ and Oadsorbed vs. Olattice might be more essential for the catalytic ozonation of MEK at room temperature. Among the Mn-loaded NZ catalysts, the 3 wt% Mn/NZ showed the best activity for the removal of MEK and ozone. The 5, 7, and 10 wt% Mn/NZ catalysts are slightly inferior to the 3 wt% Mn/NZ. Compared to the pristine NZ, the Mn/NZ catalysts showed better activity for the catalytic ozonation of MEK. In addition, the 3 wt% Mn/NZ was confirmed to have the most available acid sites among them by the analysis of NH3-TPD (temperature programmed desorption). This might be the major reason for the best catalytic activity of 3 wt% Mn/NZ together with the adjusted distribution ratios of Mn3+/Mn4+ and Oadsorbed/Olattice. Considering the result of 3 wt% Mn/NZ, the 3 wt% Mn/RM was prepared to perform the catalytic activity for the removal of MEK and ozone, but the efficiency of 3 wt% Mn/RM was significantly lower than that of the 3 wt% Mn/NZ.

  • We investigated the effectiveness of natural zeolite (NZ) and sand (SD) as a capping material to block the release of heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, and Zn) from heavily contaminated marine sediments and stabilize these heavy metals in the sediments. The efficiency of NZ and SD for blocking trace metals was evaluated in a flat flow tank attached with an impeller to generate wave. 0, 10, 30, and 50 mm depth of NZ or SD were capped on the contaminated marine sediments and the metal concentration in seawater was monitored. After completion of flow tank experiments, sequential extractions of the metals in the sediment below the capping material were performed. The difference of pH, EC, and DO concentration between uncapped and capped condition was not significant. The release of cations including Cd, Cu, and Zn were effectively blocked by NZ and SD capping but the interruption of Cr release was observed only in 50 mm depth of SD capped condition. However, the stabilization of Cr in 50 mm depth of SD capped condition was not achieved when compared to uncapped condition. NZ and SD capping were effective for stabilizing Cd, Cu, and Zn in marine sediments. It is concluded that the use of NZ with SD as a capping material is recommended for blocking Cd, Cr, Cu, and Zn release and stabilizing them in contaminated marine sediments.

  • An experiment was conducted to compare the influences of artificial zeolite(AZ) produced from fly ash and natural zeolite(NZ), those were supplemented into broiler diets, on performances, intestinal microbes and some blood chemistry for 5 wks. The experimental diets contained 21.5 and 19% CP fur starting and finishing period, respectively. The ME was 3,100 kcal/kg of feed in both starter and finisher diets. Three hundred twenty chicks were assigned to 5 treatments with 4 replicates and fed one of five experimental diets containing different levels of AZ or NZ ; 0% zeolite, 1.5% AZ, 3.0% AZ, 1.5% NZ, and 3.0% NZ. Weight gain, feed intake and feed conversion were measured with weekly basis. Blood cholesterol and intestinal microflora were analyzed at the end of the experiment. Weight gain of chicks fed with NZ tended to increase, but was not statistically different from other diet groups. However, the birds of fed with 3.0% AZ showed significant decrement of weight gain compared to that of control(P<0.05). No significant difference in feed intake was found among five treatment. Feed conversion was significantly improved in 3.0% NZ treatment relative to that of 3.0% AZ(P<0.05). There were no consistent differences in intestinal microbes between the control and zeolite groups. Blood cholesterol was significantly lower in 3.0% NZ treatments than the others(P<0.05). These results suggest that AZ can be added to broiler feeds less than 1.5% without any detrimental effects on chick performances.

  • Heavy metal removal by using porous mineral adsorbents bears a great potential to decontaminate sludge compost, and natural zeolite (NZ), artificial zeolite (AZ), and expanded perlite (EP) seem to be possible candidates for this purpose. A composting experiment was conducted to compare the efficiency of those adsorbents for removal of iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), nickel (Ni), and lead (Pb) from sewage sludge compost with no adsorbent amendment. For this purpose, 10 g of NZ and AZ and 5 g of EP was filled in a small bag made from non-biodegradable synthetic textile and was separately mixed in composting piles. The bags were separated from compost samples at the end of the experiment. AZ and NZ exhibited different reduction potentials depending on the type of heavy metal. AZ significantly reduced Cr (43.7%), Mn (35.8%), and Fe (29.9%), while NZ more efficiently reduced Cu (24.5%), Ni (22.2%), Zn (22.1%), and Pb (21.2%). The removal efficiency of EP was smaller than both AZ and NZ. The results of this simultaneous composting and metal removing study suggest that AZ and NZ can efficiently bind metal during composting process.

  • Background: The Quality Audit (BQA) program of the Breast Surgeons of Australia and New Zealand (NZ) collects data on early female breast cancer and its treatment. BQA data covered approximately half all early breast cancers diagnosed in NZ during roll-out of the BQA program in 1998-2010. Coverage increased progressively to about 80% by 2008. This is the biggest NZ breast cancer database outside the NZ Cancer Registry and it includes cancer and clinical management data not collected by the Registry. We used these BQA data to compare socio-demographic and cancer characteristics and survivals by ethnicity. Materials and Methods: BQA data for 1998-2010 diagnoses were linked to NZ death records using the National Health Index (NHI) for linking. Live cases were followed up to December $31^{st}$ 2010. Socio-demographic and invasive cancer characteristics and disease-specific survivals were compared by ethnicity. Results: Five-year survivals were 87% for Maori, 84% for Pacific, 91% for other NZ cases and 90% overall. This compared with the 86% survival reported for all female breast cases covered by the NZ Cancer Registry which also included more advanced stages. Patterns of survival by clinical risk factors accorded with patterns expected from the scientific literature. Compared with Other cases, Maori and Pacific women were younger, came from more deprived areas, and had larger cancers with more ductal and fewer lobular histology types. Their cancers were also less likely to have a triple negative phenotype. More of the Pacific women had vascular invasion. Maori women were more likely to reside in areas more remote from regional cancer centres, whereas Pacific women generally lived closer to these centres than Other NZ cases. Conclusions: NZ BQA data indicate previously unreported differences in breast cancer biology by ethnicity. Maori and Pacific women had reduced breast cancer survival compared with Other NZ women, after adjusting for socio-demographic and cancer characteristics. The potential contributions to survival differences of variations in service access, timeliness and quality of care, need to be examined, along with effects of comorbidity and biological factors.

  • In this paper, we proposed the compensation method to evaluate arousal level in different initial arousal states. Arousal level was measured by the relationship between IRI and Nz. Since Nz is affected by BI which is directly proportional to initial arousal state of subjects, the arousal level is underestimated To overcome this problem, we proposed the compensation method using modified Karolinska sleepiness scale, and determined compensation coefficients derived from this scale with five arousal levels. Applying these coefficients to portable arousal monitoring system, the proposed method in this paper could be useful for real-time evaluation and control of arousal level. As a result the developed system can detect and control the arousal state from initial drowsing sate.
