In our previous work in transcriptional regulation of sugar, expression of genes encoding putative glycosyl hydrolases in Arabidopsis was induced by sugar starvation. They were annotated as b-galactosidase (At5g56870), ${\beta}-xylosidase$ (At5g49360) and ${\beta}-glucosidase$ (At3g60140), which belong to glycosyl hydrolase family that has a catalytic domain of polysaccharides. From the primary structure of deduced amino acid sequence, they were predicted to localize to cell wall. Further investigation of these cell wall hydrolases implicated that cell wall polysaccharides provide metabolizable sugars to nutrient allocation under sugar starvation.

BACKGROUND: Potassium (K) is one of the macronutrients which are essential for plant growth and development. Its deficiency in paddy soils is becoming one of the limiting factors for increasing rice yield in Asia. METHODS AND RESULTS: To investigate physiological symptoms under K-starvation (NP) compared with complete media (NPK) condition, we measured shoot/root length, weight, nutrients, and patterns of protein expression. The shoot growth was significantly reduced, but root growth was not affected by K-starvation. However, biomasses were decreased in both shoot and root. Uptake of K was reduced up to 85%, while total concentrations of P, Ca, Mg, Na were increased in root and shoot. To better understand the starved K mechanism of rice, comparative proteome analysis for proteins isolated from rice leaves was conducted using 2-DGE. Five spots of differentially expressed proteins were analyzed by MALDI-TOF MS. Analysis of these K-starvation response proteins suggested that they were involved in metabolism and defense. CONCLUSION(s): Physiological and 2-DGE based proteomics approach used in our study results in observation of morphology or nutrients change and identification of K-starvation responsive proteins in rice root. These results have important roles in maintaining nutrient homeostasis and would also be useful for further characterization of protein function in plant K nutrition.

Phosphate, a favorable phosphorous form for plant, is one of major nutrient elements for growth and development in plants. Plants exhibit various physiological and biochemical responses in reaction to phosphate starvation in order to maintain phosphate homeostasis. Of them, expression of high affinity phosphate transporter gene family and efficient uptake of phosphate via them is a major physiological process for adaption to phosphate deficient environment. Although the various genetic resources of high affinity phosphate transporter are identified recently, little is known about their functions in plant that is prerequisite information before applying to crop plants to generate valuable transgenic plants. We demonstrated that Arabidopsis transgenic plants over-expressing two different high affinity phosphate transporter gens, OsPT1 and OsPT7, derived from rice, exhibit better growth responses compared with wild-type under phosphate starvation condition. Specially, OsPT7 gene has proven to be more effective to generate Arabidopsis transgenic plant tolerant to phosphate deficiency than OsPT1. Furthermore, the expression level of AtPT1 gene that is one of reporter genes specifically induced by phosphate starvation was significantly low compared with wild-type during phosphate starvation. Taken together, these results collectively suggest that over expression of OsPTl and OsPT7 genes derived from monocotyledonous plant function efficiently in the dicotyledonous plant, relieving stress response caused by phosphate starvation and leading to better growth rate.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of timing of nutrient starvation during transplant production on growth of runner plants and yield of strawberry 'Seolhyang' (Fragaria ${\times}$ ananassa). Nutrient solution supply at the level of EC (electrical conductivity) 0.8 $dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ was terminated at interval about 10 days between July 25 and September 5. As a result, the growth of above-ground part was inhibited while root growth increased when the nutrient starvation treatment had been brought forward to July 25. It also reduced the T/R ratio significantly and chlorophyll content was tended to be lower than the other treatment. In addition, it significantly promoted the budding, flowering and harvest of first flower cluster. On the other hand, the period of harvest was delayed more than two weeks when the nutrients were continuously supplied after the middle of August. An accumulated marketable fruit yield per plant until the end of January and February was 169 and 266g, respectively in the treatment of nutrient starvation on July 25, which was 71 and 12% increase, respectively, as compared with those in the treatment of September 5. Therefore, the appropriate nutrient starvation in the late season of strawberry nursery period could be expected the increase in yield and income during the winter season by promoting the flower bud differentiation as reducing the endogenous nitrate level of the plantlet.
Effects of starvation, ligation, refeeding and methoprene treatment in the feeding phase of the fifth instar larvae of Bombyx mori on the regulation of juvenile hormone esterase(JHE) activity were investigated. Starvation and ligation contributed to the reduction of JHE activity, however, JHE levels in starved larvae were slightly higher than in legated larvae. Haemolymph JEH activity of starved larvae was increased by refeeding, and duration of increasing time of JHE activity after starvation was related to duration of starvation. When starved larvae were applied methoprene topically, JHE activity were not changed at day 0 and 1, but were increased by 1.3-1.4 times between day 2 and 5. When ligated larvae were applied methoprene topically, JHE activity was not changed at day 0, but were increased by 1.9-2.3 times between day 1 and 5. These results suggest that head factor, juvenile hormone(JH) and nutrient are major factors in the regulation of JHE in the feeding phase of the fifth instar larvae of Bombyx mori. Especially JHE might be regulated by the co-operative action of head factor and JH. However, head factor plays important role in the early stage, while JH plays important role thereafter.
Algal growth potentials were probed by algal growth rates, maximal PSII quantum yields and ATP amount as well as dry weights of algae to evaluate the water fertility due to the algal growth in the stream (CT) and stagnant watershed (WW). Oscillatoria agardhii (CY) and Coelastrum reticulatum (CH) were cultured in nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) starvation media (CH-10 medium) and re-inoculated in CT and WW for 7 days. Cell division rates of CY were the highest (k = 7.5) in WW after N starvation, while those of CH were the hight (k = 2.97) in WW after P starvation. The growth of CY was limited by P, while that of CH was by N. Conversely, maximal PSII quantum yields of CH were generally higher than those of CY in CT and WW according to culture time. CY was much more sensibly adapted than CH according to the variations of nutrient amounts in WW. The water fertility was much higher in WW than in CT. The potential assessment tool for water fertility will be able to compensate for the limit of physio-chemical analyses and to be applied as a monitoring system to forecast red-tide.
The nutritional demand of oyster larva (Crassostrea gigas) were investigated to determine the optimal culture conditions and improve micro-algae utilization. Changes in nutrients and shell growth were examined in fed and 96-h (48 h in late umbone stage) oysters at four larval stages. Shell growth increased significantly in D shape larvae, regardless of feeding variations. No growth was observed in starved larvae, except in shell length of umbone (to 11.9 ${\mu}m$). Fed larvae showed significant growth in all development stages (P < 0.05). During starvation, lipids were most significantly decreased in all larval stages (by 76.8%, 68.3%, 76.3%, and 40.3%, respectively), followed by protein (41.1%, 31.1%, 33.1%, 16.7%) and nitrogen-free extracts (40.8%, 24.3%, 36.9%, 20.1%), Gross energy (kcal/g) consumption in each larval stage was 49.6%, 35.1%, 39.1%, and 20.4%, respectively. Our results indicate that lipids are the most important energy source during the early larval development stages of C. gigas.
This study focused on the involvement of the unusual nucleotide (p)ppGpp, a stringent factor, during the morphological and physiological differentiation of Streptomyces coelicolor. Two genes, relA and rshA, were disrupted to demonstrate the roles of the stringent factor in the differentiation. The intracellular concentration of (p)ppGpp in the wild-type (M600) and disrupted mutants was measured in relation to the intentional starvation of a specific nutrient, such as carbon, nitrogen, and phosphate or the in situ depletion of nutrients in a batch culture. As a result, it was found that the morphological characteristic of the ${\Delta}relA$ mutant was a bld phenotype forming condensed mycelia, whereas the ${\Delta}rshA$ mutant grew fast-forming spores and straightforward mycelia. In both mutants, the production of actinorhodin (Act) was completely abolished, yet the undecylprodigiosin (Red) production was increased. Intracellular (p)ppGpp was detected in the ${\Delta}relA$ mutant in the case of limited phosphate, yet not with limited carbon or nitrogen sources. In contrast, (p)ppGpp was produced in the ${\Delta}rshA$ mutant under limited carbon and nitrogen conditions. Therefore, (p)ppGpp in S. coelicolor was found to be selectively regulated by either the RelA or RshA protein, which was differentially expressed in response to the specific nutrient limitation. These results were also supported by the in situ ppGpp production during a batch culture. Furthermore, it is suggested that RelA and RshA are bifunctional proteins that possess the ability to both synthesize and hydrolyze (p)ppGpp.
Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was used to study carbon allocation patterns in response to N-starvation in the nearly ubiquitous diatom Chaetoceros muellerii. The role of gene expression, protein synthesis and transamination on the organic composition of cells was tested by using specific inhibitors. The results show that inhibition of key processes in algal metabolism influence the macromolecular composition of cells and and prior cell nutritional state can influence a cell's response to changing nutrient availability. The allocation of C can thus lead to different organic composition depending on the nutritional context, with obvious repercussions for the trophic web. This also shows that C allocation in algal cells is highly flexible and that C (and the energy associated with its allocation) can be variably and rapidly partitioned in algal cells in response to relatively short term perturbations. Furthermore, the data confirm and extend the utility of infrared spectroscopy as a probe of the metabolic state of autotrophic cells.
Previously, six Schizosaccharomyce pombe mutants that induce pheromone even in the presence of nitrogen source were isolated from a bank of temperature sensitive mutants. In this report, one of these mutants, pws6 was further characterized. The pheromone induction in pws6 mutant cells was specific to nutrient: the M-factor pheromone was induced without nitrogen starvation but not without glucose starvation. This result suggests that the pws6 mutant might have a specific defect in the pathway for nitrogen starvation. The pws6 mutant induces P-factor pheromone as well as M-factor without starvation of nitrogen in temperature sensitive mode, suggesting that the pheromone induction phenotype of pws6 mutation is not cell-type specific. From cloning of the $pws6^+$ gene by complementation of the temperature sensitive growth defect, three plasmids containing 8.1 kb, 3.3 kb, and 4.8 kb yeast DNA were recovered. These plasmids complement the growth defect of the pws6 mutant by 100%, 70%, and 10~20%, respectively. The abilities of these plasmids to complement pheromone induction phenotype of pws6 mutant cells were correlated well with the efficiencies of complementation of the growth defect. With comparison of their open reading frames to the complementation efficiencies, it is concluded that the open reading frame, SPBC19C7.06 is responsible for the complementation of temperature sensitive phenotype of the pws6 mutant. This open reading frame, named prs1, contains one long exon with no intron and encodes a putative prolyl tRNA synthetase. The putative Prs1 protein exhibits significant similarities to the prolyl tRNA synthetases of other species.
