  • To verify suitability of the developed nutrient solution for fertigation culture of cucumber, chemical changes of soil, growth characteristics and yield of cucumber as affected by conventional fertigation method (Control), the developed nutrient solution for fertigation culture (DNF) and Yamasaki cucumber recipe (YCR) were investigated. At 48 days after transplant, photosynthetic and transpiration rate of cucumber leaves were the highest in 3/2 strength of DNF and 1/2 strength of YCR, but not different with the Control, in the later growing period photosynthetic rate was the highest in 3/2 strength of DNF and YCR and was clearly different with the Control, transpiration rate was the highest in 3/2 strength of DNF and 1/2, 1 strengths of YCR. The growth and yield of cucumber, nutrient elements of cucumber leaves except for calcium were more in DNF and YCR than in the Control. Compared with pre-treated loam soil, pH of the soil was low and electric conductivity was high in all treatments, amounts of accumulated phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and magnesium were much in the higher concentrations per the kinds of nutrient solutions. From the above results, it was considered that the developed nutrient solution has suitability as nutrient solution for fertigation culture of cucumber.

  • This study was performed to develop a suitable nutrient solution for standard rose substrate culture in a closed hydroponic system. 1/4, 1/2, 2/3 and 1 strength of the nutrient solution made by Japan National Institute of Vegetable and Tea Science (JNIVT) were supplied. The photosynthesis rate, quality and growth of cut flower were higher in the 1/2 and 2/3 strength of nutrient solution during high and low temperature period. Based on the above results, optimum nutrient solutions (UOS) were composed by nutrientwater (n/w) absorption ratio with 1/2S ($NO_{3^-}N$ 6.8, $NH_{4^-}N$ 0.7, $PO_{4^-}P$ 2.0, K 3.8, Ca 3.0, Mg 1.2, $SO_{4^-}S$ $1.2me{\cdot}L^{-1}$) at high temperature season and 2/3($NO_{3^-}N$ 9.7, $NH_{4^-}N$ 0.8, $PO_{4^-}P$ 2.2, K 5.0, Ca 3.9, Mg 1.5, $SO_{4^-}S$ $1.5me{\cdot}L^{-1}$) at low temperature season. The results of suitability examination showed that the EC level in newly composed nutrient solution (UOS) was more stable than other nutrient solutions due to its large amount of calcium and potassium. The growth of cut flower cultivated with UOS was higher than those of other nutrient solutions. Especially, the yield of cut flowers in UOS nutrient solution increased 1.4 times than that of other nutrient solution treatments. Consequently, the new nutrient solution investigated in this experiment was suitable for rose cultivation in a closed hydroponic system.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of light intensity and electrical conductivity (EC) of nutrient solution during short day treatment in an ebb and flow systems on the growth and nutrient uptake of potted Kalanchoe blossfeldiana 'Rako' and the nutrient accumulation of growing medium. Nutrient concentrations in the growing medium were also analyzed to investigate the accumulation rates of macro-nutrients such as T-N, P, K, Ca, and Mg, respectively. To achieve the objectives, plants were fed with a nutrient solution with 1.2, 1.8, or $2.4dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ under three daily photosynthetic photon flux (PPF) of 4.26, 5.51, or $9.75mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}d^{-1}$. Both light intensity and EC of nutrient solution significantly influenced the crop growth. The elevation of PPFs resulted in the increase of plant growth. For each light condition, plant growth, such as dry and fresh weight and leaf area, was the highest when the electrical conductivity of nutrient solution was controlled to $2.4dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. However, growth was acceptable in the EC ranges from 1.8 to $2.4dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. Both light intensity and EC of nutrient solution significantly influenced the uptake of nutrients in the solution tanks and the accumulation of nutrients in the growing medium. As the EC of nutrient solution was elevated, the absorption rates of $NO_3^-$, $PO_4^{-3}$, $K^+$, and $Mg^{2+}$ by crops and accumulation of those in growing medium increased, but the light intensity did not significantly influence the absorption rates. Based on the above results, the regression models were suggested for anticipating the macro-nutrient accumulations in growing medium.

  • A soilless culture system with the precise control of nutrient solution was developed and the time changes of ionic contribution to EC reading was analyzed. The measuring device designed was able to wash electrodes cleanly and to measure the pH and EC of nutrient solution stably in the box. The nutrient supply system using metering device was also able to control the EC and pH within ${\pm}0.05mS/cm$ and ${\pm}0.05$, respectively. Under the EC control, activity coefficients of all ions decreased with time as ionic concentrations of $SO_4$, Mg and Ca increased due to the selective nutrient absorption by plants. Time changes of ionic contribution to EC reading could be calculated using equivalent ionic conductivities and activity coefficients obtained by numerical analysis.

  • The experiment was conducted to investigate the nutrition absorption pattern in the growth stage and develope the optimal nutrient solution hydroponically grown the cherry tomato 'Koko' in closed substrate culture system with the nutrient solution of National Horticultural Research Station in Japan into 1/2S, 1S, and 2S. When plant was grown in 1/2S, the growth and yield were high and the pH and EC in the root zone were stable. Suitable composition of nutrient solution for cherry tomato was $NO_3-N\;6.8,\;PO_4-P\;2.7,\;K 3.2,\;Ca\;3.6\;and\;Mg\;1.1\;me\;L^{-1}$ in the early growth stage, $NO_3-N\;7.3,\;PO_4-P\;2.2,\;K\;3.7,\;Ca\;3.6;and\;Mg\;1.1\;me\;L^{-1}$ in the late growth stage by calculating a rate of nutrient and water uptake. To estimate the suitability for the nutrient solution in a development of cherry tomato developed by Wongkwang university in Korea (WU), plant was grown in perlite substrate supplied with different solution and strengths(S) by research station for greenhouse vegetable and floriculture in the Netherlands (Proefstation voor tuinbouw onder glas th Mssldwijk; PTG) of 1/2S, 1S, and 2S, respectively. The growth was good at the PTG and WU 2S in the early stage and the PTG of 1S and WU of 1S and 2S in the late stage. The highest yield of cherry tomato obtained in the WU of 2S. pH and EC in root zone of WU of 2S were stable during the early and late growth stage. Therefore when cherry tomato plant was grown in WU of 2S of EC $1.6{\sim}2.0\;dS\;m^{-1}$in the nutrient solution, not only stable growth and yield but also fertilizer reduction can be obtained than that of PTG.

  • A low-cost and precise metering device, which is suitable to automatic mixing of nutrient-solution for hydroponic culture, was developed for small-scale growers. The metering device was composed of three parts those were supply pumps, metering cylinders and venturi tube. Those parts were controlled by personal computer with time-based odoff control method. To verify the performance of the developed metering device, the relationship between operating time and discharge was examined and the accuracy of the developed metering device was compared with commercial metering pumps. The results of this study are as follows. 1. The correlation coefficient between the flow rate and operating time was 0.9999, and the linear regression equation computed was y=21.759x, where y is the discharge(g) and x is the operating time(s). 2. The developed device has greater accuracy than commercial metering pumps in terms of the full-scale error. Calculated errors for the developed metering device and two commercial pump were $\pm$0.3 %, $\pm$2.45 % and $\pm$1.38 % respectively. 3. Above results show developed metering device is a useful tool for nutrient-solution control system.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of EC levels in nutrient solution on the growth of rose in coir substrate during the juvenile. Nutrient concentration were EC 0.6, 1.0, 1.4, and $1.8dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. In spite of high concentration of nutrient solution was supplied, EC and inorganic ions content in the extract of substrate was no difference by 22 days after planting. After that, they was rapidly increased with higher concentration of nutrient solution. Number of shoot was highest in EC $1.8dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ at 2nd growth cycle, 90 days after planting, after that was showed a tendency to increase with increasing nutrient concentration, but was no significant difference among treatment except EC $0.6dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. Judging by results of growth of rose and contents of inorganic ion in extracts of media, our experiment suggests that the suitable nutrient concentration is EC $1.8dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ until 90 days and then EC $1.4dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ until 165 days after planting that is more higher than conventional nutrient concentration for absorption by coir.

  • In this study, we investigated the effect of nutrient supply periods on the fruit growth and quality of 'Duke' blueberry. The nutrient solution was contained with NO3-N 4.6, NH4-N 3.4, PO4-P 3.3, K 3.0, Ca 4.6, and Mg 2.2 mmol·L-1, and EC in the nutrient solution was 1.5 ds.m-1. In 2017 and 2018, an individual blueberry bush was supplied with 8 L of the nutrient solution per week. In 2018, the drainage water quality of growing medium and fruit quality was investigated. The nutrient supply was started from April 01, and stopped at 15 days intervals as follows, 15 days before final harvest, at the final harvest date (June 30), 15 days after final harvest (DAFH), 30 DAFH, 45 DAFH, and 60 DAFH. The content of inorganic components in the growing medium was not significantly different by the stop time of nutrient supply, but the content of phosphorus (P2O5) tended to increase with the delay of stop time of nutrient supply. There were no significant differences in the fruit quality characteristics in terms of size, sugar content, and acidity among the different stop time of nutrient supply. The blueberry yield was tended to decrease with the delay of periods of nutrient supply, while the lowest yield of 1.8 kg was recorded when nutrient supply stopped at 45 and 60 DAFH.

  • Nutrient supplying by a metering pump often produces the inaccuracy in the rate of inflow than expected. In this study, we developed the transpiration estimation system using the metering pump to measure the continuous supplying rate as well as to estimate the accurate transpiration rate. The system showed the stable characteristics by eliminating the fluctuations in the head loss of nutrient tank. The direct proportionality between the supplying time and the supplied nutrient solution was obtained. The exact correlation between the integrated solar radiation and the transpiration rate using the system was calculated, and correlation coefficients between the two factors were 0.98 in the NFT system and 0.92 in the aggregate system. This results suggest that the integrated solar radiation was an important factor to directly decide the supplying volume of nutrient solution in soilless culture system. The deveolped system using the metering pump in the study was able to control the supply of the nutrient solution to the crops adjusting to the variation of solar radiation.

  • This study investigated which nutrient solution is suitable for growth and secondary metabolite contents when three different vegetable plants are grown simultaneously in one hydroponic cultivation bed. Seeds of pak choi (Brassica compestris L. ssp chinsensis), red mustard (Brassica juncea L.), and arugula (Eruca sativa Mill.) were sown in the shape of a triangle in three places on rockwool cubes. The rockwool cubes were placed in semi deepflow technique (semi-DFT) hydroponic systems in a rooftop greenhouse after three weeks of growth as seedlings then cultivated with four different nutrient solutions, Korea Horticultural Experiment Station (KHE), Hoagland, Otsuka-A, and Yamazaki, at the rooftop greenhouse for two weeks. The leaf area of pak choi cultivated in Otsuka-A was the largest but SPAD values, leaf area, and fresh weight of arugula were highest with KHE treatment. The total glucosinolate (GSL) content of pak choi was 151.7% higher in KHE than in Hoagland, and there was no significant difference in Yamazaki and Otsuka-A treatments. The total GSL content of red mustard was 34.6 μmol·g-1 in Hoagland, and it was 32.6% higher in Hoagland than in Yamazaki. Total GSL content of arugula was 57.5% higher in Yamazaki and Hoagland nutrients than in KHE and Otsuka-A nutrients solutions. The total GSL content of three plants grown with KHE was 40.7% higher than with Yamazaki, and the other nutrient solutions did not show significant differences. Therefore, KHE nutrient solution is considered suitable for nutrient solution composition for the cultivation of three different Brassicaceae crops in a single hydroponic cultivation system.
