The consumption of foods rich in TDF should not be associated with impaired mineral absorp-tion and long-term mineral status. In surveys of populations consuming high amounts of TDF e.g Third World populations and vegetarinas gross deficiencies in mineral nutrition have not been noted. If mineral status is low among these groups it is most likely caused by the inadequacy or imbalance of the diet and not by the TDF. The key word is interaction which should be inte-rpreted in dietary imbalances that produce nut-rient deficiencies. There are no strong data to support the concept that TDF inhibits mineral absorption through a binding chelation mechanism. Limited data sug-gest that positively charged groups on polymers such as chitosan and cholestyramine will decrease iron absorption in humans and animals. Because TDF does not contain positively charged groups future research should be directed at the possible role of protein consumed along with TDF and the combination of effects on mineral nutrition Phytic acid is acknowledged as a potent chela-tor of zinc. However its association with zinc and its propensity to lower Zn bioavaiability may enhance the absorption of other elements notably copper and iron. The importance of interactions among nutrients including TDF will gain addi-tional attention in the scientific community. Soluble and insoluble dietary fiber function di-fferently in the intestine. Insoluble fibers accele-rate movement through the intestine. Soluble die-tary fibers appear to regulated blood concentra-tions of glucose and cholesterol albeit by some unknown mechanism. In creased viscosity produ-ced by the SDF in the intestine may provide an explanation of how this class of polymers affects plasma glucose cholesterol and other nutrients. Employing a double-perfusion technique in the rat we demonstrated that viscosity produced by SDF will delay transfer of zinc into the circulatory system. This delayed absorption should not be interpreted as decreased utilization. A great deal of additional research is required to prove the importance of luminaly viscosity produced by SDF on slowing nutrient absorption or regulating bllod nutrient homeostasis. Increased intake of TDF in the total human diet appears desirable. A dietary intake of 35g/day should not be considered to have a negative effect on mineral absorption. It is important to educate people that an intake of more than 35g TDF/day may cause an imbalance in the diet that can adve-rsely affect mineral utilization. Acknowledgments. It is common that in the vegetable cultivation areas, the farmers tend to continue the heavy fertilization to maximize the crop yields in short term. This results in the accumulation of fertilizer elements in the soil and increase in the electrical conductivity of soil. Disregarding these, farmers continue to apply heavy doses of fertilizers. A field experiment was conducted to find out on such a soil whether fertilizer application taking the quantity of nutrients accumulated in the soil into account would save the fertilizer without losing the yield of crop, using Chinese cabbage and spinach as test crops. The findings of the experiment is summarized as following. 1. The yield of Chinese cabbage was not affected by reduction of $19kg\;P_2O_5/10a$ and $7kg\;K_2O/10a$ as compared to farmers doses, and in case of spinach the yield rather was increased under the reduction of $22kg\;P_2O_5/10a$ and $22kg\;K_2O/10a$. 2. The reduction of fertilizers according to plant nutrient status of soils did not affect the inorganic nutrient contents of the crops significantly, in both Chinese cabbage and spinach. 3. A trend was observed that the reduction in the P and K fertilizers application would shorten the storage period of Chinese cabbage. 4. The reduction in P and K fertilizers application resulted in the reduction in available P, exchangeable K, EC and $NO_3-N$ in the soil after the harvest of the crops.

This study was conducted to develop the disinfection system using electric shock for recycled nutrient solution in recycling soilless culture. Stainless steel (SUS 316) was found as the most appropriate electrode material for electrical disinfection system from the view of high electrical conductivity, low electric resistance, and low price. There were no changes in nutritional elements when the electric shock passed through the nutrient solution by stainless steel electrode. The amount of electric current increased with width than thickness of the electrode. The farther the distance between the electrodes was increased the time to reach out the aimed amount of current. The electric shock was applied to Ralstonia solanacearum and Fusarium oxysporum as representative bacteria and also fungi. Any of those pathogens were killed with the percentage of higher than 97% in the condition of 15VDC or 24VDC.
This study aims to establish the directions for the optimal nutrient contents determined by soil and leaf analyses. The study is to be used as a source for basic information in investigating the effects of nutritional environment on ginseng growth at the fields of Ansung region in Gyeonggi province. The physical property of soil porosity is closely related to ginseng growth, with more than 50% of good growth in the field. The optimal range of chemical properties in soil was analyzed as 0.20-0.28% T-N, 500-900 mg/kg Av.P$_2$O$_5$, and 2.3-3.5 cmol$^+$/kg Exch.Ca. The optimal range of inorganic nutrient contents in leaves was also analyzed. P value was less than 0.25%, and Mg was more than 0.22%. Other elements were not found clearly. The ratios of N/P, N/Mg, K/Mg, and Ca/P of leaves with good growth in the field showed 10<, 10-13, <14, 1<, respectively. In addition, the Ca:Mg:K ratio of the Exch.cation (cmol$^+$/kg) may be useful as an indicator in the assessment of plant growth in ginseng.
In order to study a relationship between soil nutrients and rice brown spot occurrence, paddy field soils, rice grains and straws collected from different paddy fields with different disease degrees of brown spots were analyzed for inorganic nutrients. Brown spot was prevalent in the rice grown in nutrient-deficient soils, which is especially low in macronutrient elements (phosphoric acid, potassium, silicic acids) and micronurients (calcium, magnesium). The soil, however, was high in sodium while organic nutrients and pH level were similar to others. The rice straws with severe brown spot were low in inorganics such as ferrous, copper, T-N, and $P_{2}O_{5}$ while the rice grains with brown spot were low in ferrous, MgO, Zn, and Mn. In the analysis of field type and nitrogen level, the highest disease severity was found in sandy-type field soil, followed by salty-type field soil and disease severity decreased as application level of nitrogen fertilizer increased. As a summary, the most important factor for effective brown spot control in rice is maintenance of proper nutrients in sandy-type field and control of sodium level in salty-type field soil.

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of replacing perlite (PL) with pellets processed with poultry feather fiber as an inert material to prepare growing medium. The growth and flowering of Salvia splendens 'Vista Red' grown in individual growing medium $Biosangto^{(R)}$, peat moss (PM), PL, and two pellets (P45-1 and P45-2) were evaluated. Peat moss was mixed with PL, P45-1, or P45-2 at various ratios (1:0 to 1:3 or 3:1 by volume) to investigate the feasibility of replacing PL with pellets. Nutrient composition of the growing medium and leaf tissues was analyzed. The number of florets, inflorescence length, plant height, and fresh weight of plants grown in media containing P45-1 or P45-2 were reduced compared to those grown in individual growing medium PM or PL. As the mixing ratio of P45-1 or P45-2 to PM was higher, the growth of salvia, such as inflorescence length, plant height, number of leaves, and fresh weight was inhibited. Our results indicate that mixing three parts PM with one part of P45-1 (PM/P45-1/3:1) or P45-2 (PM/P45-2/3:1) accelerated flowering and increased the number of florets and leaves compared to other mixing ratios of PM and pellets media. The concentrations of phosphorus (P), calcium (Ca), boron (B), iron (Fe), and copper (Cu) in individual growing medium PL, P45-1, and P45-2 were significantly lower than those in PM. The concentration of N was the highest in leaves of plants grown in P45-1 or P45-2 amended media, and the concentrations of P, Ca, and zinc (Zn) in leaves were lower in individual growing medium P45-1 or P45-2 than in PM and PL. The pH of PM/P45-1/3:1 or PM/P45-2/3:1 media was maintained at optimal level (5.8-5.9) and the concentrations of macro- and micro-elements in the media and leaves were considered to be optimal levels. Therefore, mixing three parts PM with one part P45-1(PM:P45-1/3:1) or P45-2 (PM:P45-2/3:1) is recommended for improved growth and flowering in salvia. This suggests that P45-1 or P45-2 can replace PL as an inert material to prepare growing medium.
Three-year-old Pinus koraiensis seedlings, transplanted in brown forest soils originating from granite were treated with simulated acid rain of pH concentrations 5.6(control), 4.0, 3.0, 2.5 and 2.0 for 210 days from April 21 to November 17, 1999. Visible injury of the seedlings were observed at the pH 2.0 and pH 2.5 treatments. The total dry weight of the seedlings decreased at pH 2.0 treatment compared with that of the control, and T/R ratio increased at pH 2.0 treatment compared with others. The elements in each part of the seedlings, concentrations of Ca, P and content of chlorophyll in needles increased at the pH 2.0 treatment compared with the control. The concentration of N in the needles of the seedlings increased as the soil pH decreased. As the treated pH was lowered, soil pH has decreased, and concentrations of Ca, Mg, Al, and Mn increased, especially at pH 4.4. In addition, there was a strong correlation(r=0.90, p<0.05 ; r=-0.94, p<0.01) between the dry weight of the seedlings and the pH and Al concentration of the soils. Therefore, the pH and Al concentration in the soil may be useful indicator for assessing the effect of acid rain on the growth of woody plants.
The effect of potash applied with different sources of nitrogen was experimented in pot soil culture on chinese cabbage (Brassica Pekinensis Rupr, Var. Fall 1984: Sammi Garak, Spring 1985: Jungang Summer lab.) in the fall, 1984 and in the spring, 1985. Results obtained are as follows; 1. Ammonium nitrate increased the yield of chinese cabbage more than urea did, and the effect of yield increase by ammonium nitrate was greater in the fall cultivation than in the spring. 2. The yield of chinese cabbage was positively correlated with the contents of K in the first (May 17, 1985) and second (June 9, 1985) thined cabbages (dry matter). It was also positively correlated with $NO_3-N$ content of the first thined cabbage and with K/Ca+Mg m.e, ratio of outer leaves of the harvested (June 27, 1985) cabbage, but negatively affected with Mg content of the outer leaves. 3. Correlations between K and $NO_3-N$ contained in the dry matter of first and second thined, and inner leaves of the harvested cabbage were learnt to be $r;0.9998^{**}$, r;0.4439, and $r;-0.7135^*$ respectively. The higher $NO_3-N$ content in the inner leaves of harvested cabbage was observed at K omitted ammonium nitrate plot where K was deficient, Ca and Mg contents were low. 4. The nutrient absorption and growth of chinese cabbage may take the following process. Nitrate nitrogen increases vegetative growth of the plant with enhanced K uptake and movement in to inner leaves and followed by replacement of Ca uptake and finally Mg uptake and its movement in to inner leaves.

The hydroponic culture for growing 'Duke' blueberry was evaluated in a protective greenhouse provided with similar environmental conditions to the conventional blueberry cultivations. One year old 'Duke' blueberry bushes planted in 180 L containers filled with 130 L peat moss and 40 L pearlite (v/v) were selected for the experiment. A nutrient solution consisted with NO3-N 4.6, NH4-N 3.4, PO4-P 3.3, K 3, Ca 4.6, and Mg 2.2 mmol-1 was supplied to the plants, comparing non-hydroponic treatment (provided with only underground water). Hydroponic culture increased number of shoot per bush by 18% and total shoot length by 24% compared with non-hydroponic culture. Total dry weight of a bush increased in the hydroponic with vigorous root growth 1.4-fold more than the non-hydroponic. Higher concentrations of inorganic elements and organic compounds were found in the hydroponic, indicating active nutrient absorption of the bush. The hydroponic produced high yield similar to adult bush from 4 years old age, maintaining the yield until 8 years old age. The findings of this study indicated that hydroponic cultivation systems will be useful for growing blueberry crop.
To obtain information for the proper fertilization management of cut-flower roses, the amount of macro and micro elements absorbed by cut-flower roses from soil for a year was investigated. Three cut-flower rose cultivars which are called 'Grandgara', 'Nobless', and 'Centina' were transplanted to a sandy loam soil, N-P-K standard fertilization was applied to the soil, and drip irrigation was done at the level of 10 kPa soil moisture tension. There was not significantly different in the harvest amount of cut-flower rose between 'Grandgara' and 'Nobless', but the harvest yield of 'Centina' was about 63% level when compared to that of 'Grandgara'. Considering seasonal changes in the content of nutrients in plant, parts, the uptake of untrients was higher in winter season than that in spring and summer seasons. Except for 'Centina', the nutrient amount removed from plant parts of 'Grandgara' and 'Nobless' increased with the sequence of floral part < stem < leaf, indicating that it is more dependent on biomass yield than on the content of nutrients in each plant part. The ratio of N/K amount absorbed by 'Nobless' and 'Centina' was 1.13 and 1.28. respectively, lower than 1.68 of 'Grandgara', showing that the requirement for K is greater in 'Nobless' and 'Centina' than in 'Grandgara'. The use efficiency of nutrients by cut-flower roses ranged from 39 to 64% in nitrogen, 5 to 9% in phosphorus, and 37 to 67% in potassium. It suggests that the requirement for P in cut-flower roses is very low.
