Effect of Replacement of Groundnut Cake with Urea-treated Neem (Azadirachta indica A. juss) Seed Kernel Cake on Nutrient Utilisation in Lambs

  • The effect of urea treatment on chemical composition of neem seed kernel cake (NSKC) was investigated by soaking the cake in 2.1% urea solution (1.2 l $kg^{-1}$ NSKC) for five days. The effect on utilisation of nutrients by replacing groundnut cake (GNC) (30%) with urea-treated neem seed kernel cake (UTNSKC) (33%) in a concentrate mixture fed to meet 70% of the protein requirements of lambs (8 males and 8 females), was monitored in a digestibility study. Following urea treatment of NSKC only 9.5% of urea was hydrolysed and the crude protein content of the cake was increased by 6.65%. The tannin content in depulped neem seeds was 37% catechin equivalent. Whereas feeding UTNSKC had no effect on intake of dry matter (72.5 vs 66.3 g/kg $BW^{0.75}day^{-1}$) and digestibility of crude fibre (41.3 vs 43.4%), the cake depressed (p<0.01) the percent digestibility of dry matter (63.7 vs 70.2), crude protein (63.2 vs 70.2), nitrogen free extract (73.8 vs 80.5) and gross energy (64.3 vs 69.1). Digestibility of ether extract (75.8 vs 70.9%) was higher (p<0.05) in animals offered UTNSKC. The nutritive value of the composite ration consumed by lambs offered UTNSKC was lower (p<0.01) in terms of total digestible nutrients (64.7 vs 70.2%) and digestible energy (2.8 vs 3.0 Kcal/g DM). Intake of digestible energy (199.8 vs 194.1 Kcal/kg $BW^{0.75}day^{-1}$) and retention of nitrogen (7.53 vs 8.23 g $day^{-1}$) and calcium (2.12 vs 1.84 g $day^{-1}$) were comparable on the 2 rations. Animals fed UTNSKC retained less (p<0.01) phosphorus (0.37 vs 1.05 g $day^{-1}$). The results indicate that urea treatment increased the protein level of NSKC whereas feeding the treated cake as a replacement of GNC, lowered the digestibility of nutrients and retention of phosphorus.

Nutrient Requirements of Exercising Swamp Buffalo, Bubalus bubalis. II. Details of Work Energy of Cows and Its Relation to Heart Rate

  • Four young swamp buffalo cows of similar age ranging in body weight (W) between 280 to 380 kg and trained for doing physical exercise were used in two consecutive experiments, each using a latin square design, to determine energy expenditure for draught. The experiments consisted of field trials using 4 levels of work load, i.e. no work as control and loads amounting 450 to 500 Newton (N) continuous traction for respectively 1, 2 and 3 h daily for 14 consecutive days for experiment 1, and no work, traction loads equaling 5, 10 and 15% of W for 3 h daily for 14 days for experiment 2. Heart rate during rest and exercise was monitored using PE-3000 HR monitor. Cows were fed only king grass (Penisetum purpuroides) ad libitum and were subjected to balance trials. Body composition was estimated in vivo by the body density method and daily energy expenditure (EE) was calculated from ME minus RE. RE was calculated from the changes in body-protein and -fat measured before and immediately after the 14 d experimental period assuming an energy equivalent of 39.32 MJ/kg fat and 20.07 MJ/kg protein. $E_{exercise}$ ($EE_{work}\;-\;EE_{resting}$), which was the energy spent for doing the traction during 1, 2 and 3 h was 7.13, 15.45 and 19.90 MJ, respectively. $EE_{work}$ for the 1 h treatment group was 39.75 MJ/d equivalent to 1.30 times $EE_{resting}$. The values for the 2 and 3 h treatment groups were 1.75 and 1.86 times resting energy requirement, respectively. Absolute efficiency of work in all exercise trials of experiment 2 was around 27.28%. The increases of daily $E_{exercise}$ values were correlated to elevation of heart rate (HR) according to the equation $E_{exercise}=(0.270HR^{0.363}\;-\;1)$ MJ, while draught force related to heart rate according to the equation DF (N)=6.66 HR - 361.62. Blood glucose and triglyceride levels were gradually elevated with time during the course of exercise. Mean values of blood glucose were 91.7, 115.0 and 116.2 mg/dl for cows after 1, 2 and 3 h pulling loads at 15% W respectively as compared to 88.2 mg/dl prior to work. In the same order and treatment, mean blood triglyceride concentrations were 13.5, 13.3 and 14.8 mg/dl, and 11.5 mg/dl for control. For blood lactate, the values were 1.68, 1.63 and 1.66 mM, and 0.80 mM for control. Glucose was used as the major source of energy during the initial phase of exercise, but for prolonged work, fat will replace carbohydrate as the main substrate. Accumulation of lactate persisted for some time at the end of the exercise trials.

시판 넙치용 배합사료의 품질평가 (Quality Evaluation of Commercial Extruded Pellet Diet for Olive Flounder, Paralichtys olivaceus)

  • This study evaluated the quality of commercial extruded pellet (EP) diet of five companies (A, B, C, D and E) for olive flounder Paralichtys olivaceus by biochemical analyses, physical properties and growth performance. The proximate analyses of five EP diets showed $3.2-10.0\%$ of moisture, $49.3-55.5\%$ of crude protein, $4.6-14.7\%$ of crude lipid, $7.0-13.8\%$ of crude ash, $0.7-10.5\%$ of crude fiber, $10.0-27.3\%$ of itrogen free extract (NFE), 304.3-395.4kcal/100g of digestible energy (DE) and 6.1-7.1 of calorie/protein ratio (C/P). Peroxide value (POV) was highest in diet D (47.4 meq/kg) as compared to other diets which in the range of 4.0-11.7 meq/kg. Total amino acid contents were ranged from 46.54 to $55.46\%$ with the highest content in diet B and the lowest content in diet C. Essential amino acid of diet C was lowest $(7.43\%)$ as compared to other diets which in the range of $19.43-20.30\%$. Saturated fatty acid was higher in diet A $(37.65\%)$ followed by diet B $(36.32\%)$, diet E$(34.39\%)$, diet C$(30.95\%)$ and diet D$(30.10\%)$. EPA+DHA were highest in diet E$(30.78\%)$ and lowest in diet C$(15.48\%)$. The floating rate after 6 hours on the sea water was highest in diet C$(100\%)$ followed by diet B$(40\%)$ and A$(10\%)$. However, diets D and E were completely settled down after 1 and 2 hours, respectively. The range of relative expansion rate was $27.2-49.3\%$ for all diets and all reached the peak at 2-3 hours. The water absorption rate of diets C and D was lowest, and diet E was highest at 1 hour after deposition of sea water. Growth rate was higher in diet B$(22.3\%)$ and E$(21.3\%)$. Feed efficiency was higher in diet A$(109.7\%)$ and E$(105.3\%)$ and was significantly lowest in diet D$(80.7\%)$. The protein efficiency ratio was highest in diet E (2.72) and lowest in diet D (1.76). These results suggest that there is a necessity for improvement of nutrients balance and feed physical properties to fulfill the nutrient requirements and digestive characteristics of fishes in commercial EP diets.

Effects of Alfalfa and Brown Mid-rib Corn Silage and Level of Forage Neutral Detergent Fiber on Animal Performance of Lactating Cows in Michigan

  • Alfalfa silage and corn silage are the major dairy feeds in most dairy operations in Michigan, USA. In recent years, the need to improve digestible fiber and dry matter intake of forages to meet the nutrient requirements of high yielding dairy cows and the willingness to plant corn specifically for silage has led plant breeders to focus on the brown mid-rib (BMR) trait. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of different ratio of alfalfa to BMR corn silage and ration level of forage neutral detergent fiber (NDF) on animal performance of lactating cows in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. This study was conducted at the Upper Peninsula Experiment Station of Michigan State University in Chatham, Michigan, USA. Two different ratios of forage type (high alfalfa silage/low BMR corn silage, AS, and high BMR corn silage/low alfalfa silage, BMRCS) and two different dietary NDF contents (27% NDF, 27 = low forage/high grain feeding, and 33% NDF, 33 = high forage/low grain feeding) were used. The experimental design was a $4{\times}4$ Latin Square with 20 milking cows (12 multiparous and 8 primiparous). This trial had four 21-day periods with 14 d adaptation and 7 d data collection. Milk yield and body condition score (BCS) on the AS-27, BMRCS-27 and BMRCS-33 treatments were significantly (p<0.05) higher than on the AS-33 treatment. Dry matter intake of the AS-27 and BMRCS-27 treatments was significantly (p<0.05) higher than for the AS-33 and BMRCS-33 treatments. Milk urea nitrogen (MUN) on the AS-33 treatment was significantly (p<0.05) higher than on the other diet treatments. A key finding of this study was that the BMRCS-33 (higher amounts of brown mid-rib corn silage than alfalfa silage, high forage and low grain feeding diet at 33% NDF) led to the equal highest milk production whilst having the equal lowest dry matter intake. This study demonstrated that the diet with higher ratio of highly digestible NDF forage such as brown mid-rib corn silage to alfalfa silage could lower grain feeding in the ration.

우주에서 작물 생산을 위한 공학적 접근 (Engineering Approach to Crop Production in Space)

  • 본고에서는 우주에서 장기간에 걸쳐 임무를 수행하는 인간의 생명지원을 목적으로 CELSS를 이용한 식물생산, 물과 공기의 정화 및 재생, 폐기물 처리 등을 위한 공학적 접근을 검토하였다. 이러한 공학적 접근에는 미소중력 또는 저압과 같은 우주 환경에 적용 가능한 폐쇄형 식물생산 시스템, 물질 순환, 물의 재생, 폐기물의 처리, 미량 유해가스의 제거, 조명, 배양액의 공급 등이 포함된다. 우주에서 재배 가능한 작물의 선택 기준으로 높은 생산성, 식용성, 소화성, 조리성, 자동화 가능성, 짧은 줄기, 높은 증산속도 등이 제기되고 있다. 화성 표면에서의 낮은 압력은 작물 생산용 온실을 설계할 때 주요 장애물에 해당한다. 때문에 저압하에서 식물 재배가 가능한 팽창식 온실의 개발에 관심이 집중되고 있다. 팽창식 온실의 구조, 내부 압력, 자재, 조명 방식, 방사선 차폐 등은 주요 설계 인자에 해당한다. 팽창식 온실 내의 낮은 압력은 구조물의 질량과 가스의 누출속도를 줄일 수 있다. 저압 조건에서는 증산속도가 급격하게 증가하여 식물의 수분요구도가 높게 나타난다. 증산 또는 수경재배시스템으로부터의 증발에 의해서 수분이 대기 중으로 방출될 때 증기압이 증가한다. 저압 조건에 있는 폐쇄계에서는 증기압의 변화가 전체 압력에 커다란 영향을 미친다. 그러므로 저압 조건의 수경재배시스템은 누수로 인하여 기화되는 수분 손실을 줄이기 위해서 고도로 밀폐되어야 한다. 또한 저압으로 유지되는 온실내의 상대습도를 높게 유지할 수 있는 환경제어 기술이 개발되어야 한다. 향후 폐쇄생태계 생명유지 시스템의 핵심 기술은 우주뿐만 아니라 지구상의 사막, 극지방 또는 해저와 같은 열악한 환경 조건에서도 생명 지원을 가능케 할 것이다.

기능성 유제품의 생산 현황 및 관리제도 - 미국.유럽을 중심으로 - (Current Status and Regulation Issues of the Functional Dairy Products in European Countries and the United States of America)

  • This work has been conducted as a part to set up the regulations and the scientific evaluation systems for the functional dairy products with health claims in Korea. Toward this end, current regulations, requirements, and all kinds of provisions related to the functional dairy products overseas were taken into accounts and feasible recommendations of new initiatives on the current regulations as well. By doing so, not only protecting hopefully the innocent consumers from the false labeling statements and fake advertisements, but also eventually to revitalize the stagnated domestic dairy industries. Currently, functional daily products are simply regarded as "Dietary Supplements" in the United States, and subjected to the regulations under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act, established m 1994. Manufacturers and sales distributors should notify their products to the FDA, which is in charge of the dietary supplements on nutrition and labeling, in advance when they start marketing a new dietary ingredient or any foods containing it in the States. For EU countries, there exists keen interests about the functional food products between the member countries of the European Union even though the products are categorized into "Food Supplements" similar to those in the United States. Therefore, they maintain a cautious attitude in applying the health claims to the functional food products. On the other hand, under the Japanese health food system, functional foods are qualified to the functional health foods in terms of legal status as long as any traditional foods can meet the legal standards in its effectiveness, safety as well as quality, along with significant scientific evidences related to the products, thus categorized into "Foods for Specified Health Uses and "Foods with Nutrient Function Claims". Through this study, we may have some expectations and potential utilizations as follows: Legal regulations of dietary supplements especially for the dairy products will be implemented by the outcomes of this research and proposed a tentative amendment of functional ingredients for the sake of consumer protection from the false advertisements and overstatement labeling. Current regulations on the animal foods processing and advertisements will be amended and supplemented in order to revitalize the current downturn dairy sales and to harmonize the international Codex recommendations. The results obtained from this study will make the consumers a wise selection of the dairy products with health claims and be utilized for consumer education and advertisement of the functional products as well.

Myxococcus xanthus socD500에 의한 포자 형성 및 CsgA신호에 특이적 유전자의 발현에 관한 연구 (Myxococcus xanthus socD500 mutation causes Sporulation and Induction of two C-signal Specific Genes)

  • 군집을 이루어 생활을 하는 세균류의 하나인 M. xanthus의 csgA 유전자는 세포 표면 단백질을 암호화하는데 이 단백질은 M. xanthus의 자실체 및 포자 형성을 수반하는 발생 (development)에 필수적이다. csgA 돌연변이들은 정상적인 성장을 보이지만, 발생 과정에서 자실체 및 포자 형성이 불가능하다. 또한, CsgA 세포간 기인한 신호 전달체계에 의해서 유발되는 CsgA 특이적 유전자들의 발현이 없거나 감소한다. socD500돌연변이는, csgA 돌연변이체로부터 자실체 혹은 포자 형성을 회복하게 해주는 2차 돌연변이 중의 하나로서, csgA 돌연변이체의 포자 형성을 회복하도록 한다. socD500에 의한 포자 형성은 영양원의 고갈 및 자실체의 형성이 없이도, 단순히 성장 온도를 $32^{\circ}C$에서 $15^{\circ}C$로 낮추는 것이 의해서 이루어진다. 이런 과정을 거쳐 형성된 포자의 구조를 전자현미경으로 관찰한 결과 정상 포자와는 다르게 단지 얇은 여러 겹의 막들이 존재하였다. 또한 socD500 돌연변이체에서 10개의 CsgA 특이적 유전자들의 발현율을 측정한 결과, 자실체 형성을 수반하는 정상적인 발생시에만 발현하는 ΩDK4506 및 ΩDK4406 유전자들이 $15^{\circ}C$에서 높게 발현되는 것으로 나타났다. 이 결과는 socD500은 CsgA에 특이적인 신호 전달체계에 관련된 일부 유전자들의 발현을 조절하는 역할에 관련되었다는 것을 알 수가 있었다.

아세트 알데히드(특수산업) 폐수의 생물학적 처리 (Studies on the Biological Treatment of Waste Water from Acetaldehyde Plant)

  • 아세트알데히드 공장폐수의 생물학적 처리를 위하여 중화제 및 응집제의 효과를 검토하고, 4개 균주 Micrococcus roseus AW-6. Micrococcus luteus, AW -22. Microbacterium lacticum AW-38. Microbacterium laevaniformans AW-41을 혼합 배양하여 미생물의 영양요구량 및 성장에 미치는 환경인자 둥을 조사한 결과는 다음과 같다. 아세트알데히드 폐수를 잘 자화시키는데 필요한 온도는 $30^{\circ}C$였고 pH는 7.0이였으며 96시간째에 COD 제거율이 최대에 달하였다. 폐수처리를 위한 중화제로서는 NaOH가 가장 좋았고 응집제의 처리 효과는 인정되지 않았으며 폐수처리를 위한 최적 희석배수는 10배 정도로 나타났다. 균 생육을 위한 영양원으로서는 $NH_{2}NO_{3}$ 200ppm, $KH_{2}PO_{4}$, 50ppm, $CaCl_{2}$ 15ppm. $MgSO_{4} \cdot 7H_{2}O $ ppm을 보충하였을 때 COD 제거율이 향상되었다. 회분배양 실험결과 속도계수 Kl은 4. 5X 10-6이었으며, BOD 제거융을 85%로 하기 위한 체류시간은 45시간 이었다. 연속배양 결과 COD 제거율은 85%로 나타났으며 처리수의 수질은 COD 60ppm. BOD 40ppm, pH7.0 정도로서 환경기준치 이하였다.

엽산: 2020 영양소 섭취기준과 한국인의 영양상태 (Folate: 2020 Dietary reference intakes and nutritional status of Koreans)

  • 엽산은 비타민 B군에 속하는 수용성 비타민으로, 핵산 합성과 아미노산 대사에서 단일탄소를 전달해 주는 반응의 조효소 역할을 한다. 엽산은 새로운 세포가 형성되어 성장하는 임신기와 성장기에 매우 중요한 영양소이며, 여성의 임신 전 적절한 엽산 영양상태는 신경관 결손증을 예방한다고 알려져 있다. 이 외에도 엽산 섭취 부족은 빈혈, 고호모시스테인혈증, 심혈관질환, 암, 인지 장애, 우울증 등 다양한 질병과도 관련이 있다고 보고되어, 엽산은 전 생애주기 동안 건강을 유지하기 위해 충분히 섭취해야 하는 영양소이다. 본 연구에서는 2020 한국인 엽산 섭취기준의 개정 근거를 살펴보고, 국민건강영양조사로부터 엽산 섭취량과 혈청 엽산 농도를 성별, 연령대별로 분석하였으며, 향후 엽산 섭취기준 개정에 참고할 만한 내용을 제언하였다. 표준체중의 변경에 따라 영아 후기의 충분섭취량과 15-18세의 평균필요량이 2015년과 달리 변경되었으나, 권장섭취량과 상한섭취량에는 변화가 없었다. 2016-2018년 국민건강영양조사 결과에서 대부분의 연령에서 엽산 섭취량은 권장섭취량에 미치지 못하였으며 특히 15-29세 여성의 섭취량이 권장섭취량 대비 매우 낮았다. 임신부와 수유부의 엽산 섭취량도 권장섭취량 대비 60% 이하로 낮았으나, 혈액수준은 다른 연령층에 비해 높아 보충제를 섭취한 결과로 보인다. 앞으로 국민건강영양조사에서 보충제 섭취량도 조사해야 할 것이며, 엽산의 섭취량 평가를 위해서는 생식품, 조리된 식품, 강화식품 중의 엽산 함량에 대한 DB가 구축되어야 할 것이다. 또한 혈청 엽산 뿐 아니라 적혈구 엽산 농도와 혈장 호모시스테인 농도도 분석할 필요가 있으며, 분석방법에 대한 질 관리가 필요하다.

수도권 일부 지역 청소년의 영양지수 등급에 따른 영양소 섭취와 식행동 실태 비교 연구 (A Comparative Study on the Nutrient Intake and Dietary Behavior according to Nutrition Quotient Grade of Adolescents in Some Areas of the Seoul Metropolitan Area)

  • This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the nutrition quotient and the dietary intake of adolescents. A total of 393 adolescents were surveyed to evaluate their Nutrition Quotient for Korean Adolescents (NQ-A) scores and dietary intake. The average age of the survey subjects was 15 years and the average NQ-A score of the subjects was 49.11±13.35. There was no significant difference in the NQ-A scores according to gender and age. The average dietary diversity score was 3.77±0.85, and it was significantly higher in boys than in girls (p< .05) with the scores of 12-14-year-old students being significantly higher than those aged 15-18 years (p< .01). The results of comparing the percentage of recommended intake or adequate intake and the mean adequacy ratio (MAR) according to the NQ-A grade, showed that the 'High' grade had a significantly higher intake percentage of vitamin B1, B12, folate, phosphorus, iron and a significantly higher MAR (p< .05). From a long-term perspective, efforts to improve dietary habits are deemed necessary to meet an individual's nutritional requirements. Adolescents themselves should develop proper eating behaviors and acquire suitable dietary management skills to enhance their nutritional status, ultimately contributing to an improvement in their quality of life.
