To develop a nutrient solution for a closed hydroponic system in potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) 'Atlantic' and 'Superior' potatoes were grown with the nutrient solutions whose strengths were 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 of the concentration of the nutrient solution developed by the National Horticultural Experiment Station in Japan. The best results in potato growth and yield were obtained with 0.5 and 1.0 strength nutrient solutions, and nutrient compositions for potato were determined based on the 1.0 strength nutrient solution; $14.4me{\cdot}L^{-1}\;N,\;4.2me{\cdot}L^{-1}\;P,\;7.5me{\cdot}L^{-1}\;K,\;5.5me{\cdot}L^{-1}\;Ca$, and $3.5me{\cdot}L^{-1}\;Mg$ for stolon growth stage and $14.8me{\cdot}L^{-1}\;N,\;4.0me{\cdot}L^{-1}\;P,\;8.5me{\cdot}L^{-1}\;K,\;6.5me{\cdot}L^{-1}\;Ca$, and $3.0me{\cdot}L^{-1}\;Mg$ for tuber growth stage. To examine the suitability of the nutrient solutions developed for potato, the strengths of 1.0 (PS 1.0S), 0.75 (PS 0.75S), or 0.5 (PS 0.5S) were compared with half-strength of Japanese Horticultural Experiment Station' solution (JH 0.5S). Changes in pH, EC, and mineral concentrations in nutrient solutions depended more on solution strength and growth stage than on the type of nutrient solution. However, most elements in solution remained constant with plant age in PS 0.75S solution during stolon growth stage, and in PS 0.5S solution during tuber growth stage. The greatest growth and tuber yield was obtained in the standard strength solution (PS 1.0S), and potato solution developed in this experiment was recommended for hydroponic culture of potato in a closed system.
The generation of ferrous slag, an industrial by-product from the iron ore industry, results in serious environmental problems. The chemical compositions indicate 30-34% SiO2, 30-34% CaO, 18-22% Al2O3 and 0.5-0.6% Fe2O3. The specific gravity, moisture content and pH are in the range of 1.3-1.65, 9.1-10% and 8.5-9.0 respectively. The major part of the slag is composed of sand-size particles. The problems of disposal of slag could be minimized by considering its use in various environmental engineering applications providing additional value to the by-product. This paper mainly focuses on the potential utilization and valorisation of ferrous slag in both water and wastewater treatments. It is effective for the treatment of water and wastewater containing nutrients, heavy metals and polluted river/stormwater.
In order to investigate the effect of gamma radiation on Salmonella typhi, Ty2, the components of amino acids, proteins, carbohydrates and lipids in irradiated cells were compared with those in unirradiated control cells respectively. The results obtained were as follows ; 1) The inactivation curves of Salmonella typhi with $Co^{60}$ .gamma.-ray irradiation were exponential over a wide range to the irradiated doses. 2) Dose for the inactivation factor of $10^8$ was 94.0 Krad in physiological saline or in phosphate buffered saline, 104.2 Krad in nutrient broth, 220.4Krad in frozen state, 552.0 Krad in dried state, 88.3 Krad in the abundance of oxygen and 188.0 Krad in the deficience of oxygen, respectively. 3) Five consecutive irradiation of Salmonella typhi suspension at the dose of 90 Krad gave no additional increase in resistance. 4) Even at the smallest dose of 500 Krad, compositions of amino acids, proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids were more or less decreased and the distinct banding patterns were also lost possibly due to degradation of the protein molecules.
Benthic macroinvertebrates were examined to elucidate community structures of a set of 9 shallow ponds from a total of 6 parks located in Seoul metropolitan area, Korea. The result showed that macroinvertebrates were diverse and abundant, and aquatic macrophyte provide habitat diversities in ponds. The differences among benthic macroinvertebrate community compositions seemed to be attributed to local biotic and abiotic interactions. We surveyed benthic macroinvertebrate, biotic (macrophyte), abiotic (turbidity, nutrient concentrations, conductivity, heavy metal concentration) and morphometric (area, depth) of the lentic systems. Generally, the benthic macroinvertebrates were dominated by Cloeon dipterum or Coenagrion sp.. Distribution of the aquatic macrophyte community was correlated with the species composition of macroinvertebrates. The result demonstrated a significant and positive relationship between habitat quality and macroinvertebrate composition.
To find out the optimum fertilizer level for high yielding variety, Paldanghomil, experiment was conducted with 15 compositions of fertilizer levels at the experiment field of forage rye in Sunchon National University from Sep. 1998 to Aug. 1999. The effects of nitrogen fertilizer on plant growth were large significant but increasing rate of application in potassium and phosphate fertilizers above 10kg/10a had negligible effects on plant growth. Raising nitrogen application rate of fertilizers turned out to be 18-10-10kg/l0a of N-P$_2$O$_{5}$-K$_2$O. Content of crude protein was the highest and that of crude fiber such as NDF, ADF, cellulose and lignin were lowest at this rate. Furthermore, IVDMD was high and dry matter yield were the highest at the optimum rate.e.
This study compared the nutritional value of quinoa cultivated in different regions, i.e., Peru (PQ), United States (UQ), and Korea (KQ), focusing on their proximate and nutrient compositions and functional components. Moisture, protein, lipid, and ash contents were highest in KQ, and the carbohydrate content was the highest in UQ. KQ had the highest amount of total amino acids, especially lysine. KQ had the lowest levels of Na but the highest levels of K, P, Fe, Mg, Zn, and Mn. The antioxidant compounds, quercetin and kaempferol were not detected in KQ, which consequently had the lowest total phenolic and total flavonoid contents (TPC and TFC, respectively). These values were comparatively higher in UQ. Meanwhile, PQ had the highest TPC and TFC values as well as kaempferol content, but lacking quercetin. These results demonstrate that the nutritional value of quinoa varies according to the region in which it is cultivated.
In this study, we analyzed fish compositions and ecological characteristics such as trophic guilds and tolerance guilds in association with water quality characteristics in Masan Reservoir during November 2008. Total number of species were 12 species (6 families) and the dominant species were Zacco platypus, Hemiculter eigenmanni, and Pseudorasbora parva. We found three Korean endemic species and one exotic species, Carassius cuvieri. According to the analysis of ecological indicator characteristics, relative proportion of tolerant and omnivore species was 98% of the total indicating that probably, the fauna was influenced by physical habitat disturbance and physicochemical degradations. Fish distribution analysis along with littoral zone showed that the most fishes (${\sim}$95%) were observed in the littoral zone where emerged macrophytes were well developed. Also, substrate analysis indicated that the most species were found near silt area (11 species, 91.7%), so that the significant differences were found between the substrate types. Analysis of water quality indicated that concentrations of total phosphorus (TP) and chlorophyll-a (ChI-a) as a lake trophic indicator were judged as eutrophic states, respectively and COD as an indicator of organic matter pollution averaged 10.9 mg $L^{-1}$. Based on the water quality, this system were influenced by the nutrient enrichments and organic matter. The degradations of water quality in Masan Reservoir resulted in trophic compositions of fish (increase of omnivore species) and the dominance of tolerant fish. This Monitoring data may contribute changes of fish fauna and compositions in relation to habitat modifications and chemical water quality degradations in the future.
The excessive use of fertilizer and compost in agricultural land increases the accumulation of nutrients in soil. The surplus nutrients in soil transported through surface and sub-surface flow can lead to water pollution problems and algal bloom. Moreover, nutrient accumulation and continuous crop cultivation changes the physical structure of the soil, which increases the potential of nutrient. The cultivation in the Daecheong Lake reservoir area may have a direct effect on the lake's water quality due to leaching and releasing of nutrients when water level rises. This research was carried out to analyze the physical and chemical properties of soil in the agricultural areas surrounding Daecheong Dam reservoir to provide basic data available for the establishment of Daecheong Lake water quality management measures. The soil of the Daecheong Lake reservoir was classified as sandy Loam, where surplus nutrients can be transported. Chemical compositions in the soil were found to be significantly affected by use of different fertilizer amounts. Nutrient outflow occurred during spring rainfall events from the rice paddy fields, whereas excess nutrients from summer to fall seasons originated from dry paddy fields. Nutrient outflow from dry paddy fields is mainly from sub-surface flow. Organic agricultural wastes from agricultural land and excessive vegetation inside the river was also evaluated to contribute to the increase in organic matter and nutrients of the river. The results can be used to select the priority management area designation and management techniques in the Daecheong Lake for water quality improvement.

This study was conducted to analyze the nutrient compositions of stem and fruit of Opuntia ficus-indica var. saboten (OF) and Opuntia humifusa (OH). The results of the two-way analysis of variance test indicated that the parts, varieties and parts*varieties had influence on nutrient content except crude protein, soluble dietary fiber, Fe, Se, I, vitamin E, niacin and vitamin C. Moisture and crude ash content was higher in stem than in fruit, while crude lipid and insoluble dietary content was higher in fruit than in stem. Mineral content revealed that K (1,313.67 mg% in OF, 1,351.38 mg% in OH) was the highest in fruit and Ca (5,146.29 mg% in OF, 1,388.19 mg% in OH) was the highest in stem. Vitamin C was the most abundant vitamin in the fruit of OF (199.98 mg%) and OH (187.12 mg%). Polyunsaturated fatty acid was the highest among fatty acids (66.9~70.1%), with higher content in the stem (753.89 mg%) than fruit (578.01 mg%) in OF, while higher in the fruit (1,093.63 mg%) than stem (475.07 mg%) in OH. Moisture, crude protein, Mg, Se and riboflavin was higher in OF than OH; whereas, crude lipid, insoluble dietary fiber, total dietary fiber and monounsaturated fatty acid were higher in OH than OF. These results indicated that OF and OH could be a good food source for Ca, K and Vitamin C. Also, different nutrient content by parts and varieties, can be helpful in choice of parts or varieties for consumer purposes.

The objective of this study is to observe growth pattern of grand rapids(lettuce) according to different dexperimental conditions for minimizing its growth period such as composition of nutrient, irradiation time of light source and cultivation mode. The culture of water spray type using seeds of grand rapids was performed during growth period of total 50 days. Experimental conditions consist of five compositions of nutrient (PW 0.5 mS/cm, PW 1.0 mS/cm, PY 0.5 mS/cm, PY 1.0 mS/cm, PW 2.0 mS/cm) and three irradiation times of light source (12h(on) / 12h(off), 18h(on) / 06h(off), 24h(on) / 00h(off)). Illumination was adjusted to ratio of 7:1:1 of red, blue and white color, respectively. Indoor environmental condition for cultivating grand rapids is as follows: temperature (19-$22^{\circ}C$), relative humidity (60-70%) and carbon dioxide (1,000-1,200 ppm). The data were obtained from five iteration tests. The maximum growth level was observed in the experimental condition of 18 hr(on) / 06 hr(off) and PY 1 mS/cm for 1st week of cultivation period, 24 hr(on) / 00 hr(off) and PY 1mS/cm for 2nd week of cultivation period, and 24 hr(on) / 00hr(off) and PW 1 mS/cm for 3rd week of cultivation period, respectively. On the contrary, the minimum growth level was observed in the experimental condition of 18 hr(on) / 06 hr(off) and PW 0.5 mS/cm for 1st week of cultivation period, 12 hr(on) / 12 hr(off) and PW 0.5 mS/cm for 2nd week of cultivation period, and 12 hr(on) / 12 hr(off) and PY 0.5 mS/cm for 3rd week of cultivation period, respectively. Based on the results obtained from this study, it is concluded that the growth level of grand rapids varied with different irradiation time of light source and composition ratio of nutrient according to cultivation period.
