The purpose of study was to test the hypothesis that preschool children who experienced nursing caries have high dft index and caries activity in primary dentition. One thousand and seventy-five preschool children from 4 to 6 years old were examined for their caries experience and salivary invertase activity by Resazurin Disc Test. Nursing caries group was identified by the criteria of having more decayed and filled teeth among the upper incisors than among the upper molars. The prevalence of nursing caries was 15.8%. The dft index of nursing caries group was significantly higher than that of the other groups except the rampant caries group(P<0.01). The Resazurin Disc Test score of nursing caries group was significantly higher than that of the other groups(P<0.01) and there was no difference between nursing caries group and rampant caries group. Therefore, it is recommended that children who experienced nursing caries should be incorporated in the caries prevention program through the primary and mixed dentition.

To investigate the prevalence and etiologic factors of nursing caries, oral examination was performed on 1,100 kindergarten children from 6 Seoul areas and 3 Hongchun areas. Parents were asked to fill out questionnaires. The following results were obtained: 1. The prevalence of nursing caries among 1,100 in the sample group(age 30-75 months) was 14.8%. 2. Fathers' education level(p<0.05), mothers' education level(p<0.01) and monthly income was higher in caries-free group children. 3. When the dietary tendencies of nursing caries group and caries-free group were compared, no significant differences in the length and method of feeding were found. However, nursing caries group showed higher frequency of bedtime nursing habit(p<0.01), daytime use of bottle as a comforter(p<0.01) and other beverage feeding in addition to milk(p<0.01). 4. When the parents' awareness of caries prevention was compared, caries-free group per formed more frequent tooth cleansing(p<0.05) and periodic dental examination(p<0.01).5. Dental caries experience of mothers was significantly lower in the caries free group(p<0.05). From the above results, it can be concluded that deleterious nursing habit had great effect on developing nursing caries and the incidence of nursing caries was lower among children with parents of higher socioeconomic status.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence rate of the nursing caries in preschool children by retrospective epidemiological survey. 500 preschool children in Iksan city were examined for their dental caries experience (dt, mt, ft). Subjects were divided stepwise by the pattern of caries experience: Group 1-no caries, Group 2-no caries in the upper arch, Group 3-no caries among the upper incisors, Group 4-dmft in the lower arch $\geq$ mft in the upper arch, Group 5-dmft among the upper molars > dmft among the upper incisors, Group 6-dmft among the upper molars < dmft among the upper incisors+caries among the lower incisors, and Group 7-the rest. Groups 6 was regarded as the group which had experienced rampant caries, and the Group 7 was regarded as the group which had the typical pattern of nursing caries. The prevalence rate of nursing caries (Group 7) was 16.0%.
Dental caries in infants is a representative oral disease causing the malocclusion of permanent dentition and developmental variations in the permanent teeth, so it is very important to manage caries in infants. Thus, in order to survey mothers who visited pediatric dentistry concerning their awareness of nursing bottle caries and to obtain data necessary for developing education materials to prevent nursing bottle caries, the present study conducted a survey using a self reporting questionnaire with 205 mothers who visited the Pediatric Dentistry of a dental hospital in Cheonan with a child aged below 5 during the period from June 7 to August 2 in 2008, and obtained results as follows. 1. The awareness of dental caries was highest in the group aged over 37 months 96.8%, and next in order of age 13~24 months 96.5%, 25~36 months 94.5%, and younger than 13 months 83.3%. 2. The awareness of nursing bottle caries was highest in infants aged over 37 months 58.7%, and next, in 13~24 months 57.9% and in 25~36 months 54.8%, and lowest in infants younger than 13 months 33.3%, suggesting the necessity of education on nursing bottle caries(p=0.423). 3. As to the time of the first visit to dental clinic, 50.0% of infants younger than 13 months, 52.6% of those aged 13~24 months, and 49.3% of those aged 25~36 months replied the completion of the eruption of primary teeth, and 36.5% of those aged over 37 months replied the occurrence of dental caries. Thus, the motives for visiting dental clinic were different among the age groups, and the differences were statistically significant(p=0.005). 4. The age of toothbrushing to be started by mother's opinion was 6 months in 0.5%, 12 months in 68.8%, 18 months in 22.9%, 24 months in 5.9%, and 25 months in 1.0%, and no statistically significant difference was observed according to age. 5. The number of toothbrushing was usually once a day after meal. and increased by in age was shown statistically significantly difference(p=0.035). 6. The most frequent method of preventing nursing bottle caries was regular toothbrushing in all the age groups, and next restriction of sugar intake, regular dental consultation, and fluoridation in order The most effective prevention of dental caries was regular visit to dental clinic and next, toothbrushing after meal.
This study was conducted to investigate dental caries according to obesity in order to provide basic data for efficient dental health program for elementary school students. Data were obtained from a health record book of 668 elementary school students in Chun Cheon city in 1998. Obesity was categorized into overweight. normal and under weight groups by Rohrer index. Dental caries was classified into decayed. filled and missed teeth. The result were as follow: 1. Prevalence rate of dental caries(dft) was $78.7\%$ and mean dft was 2.96; decayed and filled teeth was 1.01 and 1.95. respectively. As for mean dft. a siginificant difference were shown according to obesity and age. while no siginificant difference was shown between boys and girls. 2. Prevalence rate of dental caries including missed teeth (dmft) rate was $83.9\%$ and mean dmft was 3.64. As for mean dmft. a siginificant difference were shown according to obesity and age. while no siginificant difference was shown between boys and girls.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference between the children who experienced nursing caries and the children who were caries-free in the prevalence of enamel hypoplasia and DMF rate and to analyse causal factors from questionnaires. Oral examination was performed on 101 children(nursing caries group-45, caries-free group-56)in the 1994 at first, later in 1999. Parents were asked to write questionnaires. As a cotrol group, 50 children were chosen randomly. The results obtained from this study were as follow: 1. The prevalence of enamel hypoplasia of the children who experienced nursing caries was higher significantly than that of the all of the examined children (P<0.01). 2. DMF Tate of the children who experienced nursing caries was higher significantly than that of the children who were caries-free (P<0.01), and higher than that of the all of the examined children also(P<0.05). 3. The children who experienced nursing caries performed tooth brushing less frequently (P<0.05) and started tooth brushing later than the children who were caries-free (P<0.01). 4. The children who experienced nursing caries ate cariogenic food more frequently(P<0.05) and had higher preference(P<0.05) than the children who were caries free. 5. The children who experienced nursing caries showed lower frequency of periodic dental examination than the children who were caries-free or centre) group(P<0.05).

The purpose of this study was to investigate. the effects of the lactation of human or bovine milk and the method of using nursing bottles on the salivary invertase test scores and deciduous caries experience of children. 328 preschool children (boys 178, girls 150) in Iksan city were selected for this study. The parents of the children were asked to answer the questionnaire about the lactation of human or bovine milk and the time of using nursing bottles. The data were obtained from the salvary invertase activity score,(Resazurin Disc Test) deciduous caries experience and the questionnaire. The result were as follows. The invertase activity and caries experience of the human milk higher than that of the bovine milk group(P<0.05). There were significant positive relationships between the lactation period and the invertase activity and between the lactation period and the caries experience(P<0.05). Caries experience had a tendency to increase as the time of using nursing bottles increase (P>0.05).
The author had studied epidemiologically the dental caries experience rate in the 200 students of nursing school of national medical center.
The obtained results were as follows;
1. The dental caries experience rate in the students of nursing school of N.M.C. was 78.5%.
2. The D.M.F. teeth index in the students of nursing school of N.M.C was 4.5.
3. The filled teeth rate of students of nursing school of N.M.C. was lower than decayed teeth rate and missed teeth rate.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of mothers education attainment on prevalence of dental caries among their preschool children. Methods: Data were obtained from the third 2006 Korea National Oral Health Survey. A total of 515 preschool children aged 2 to 7 years and their mothers were selected in this study. We used mother's education level as her socioeconomic position and controlled children's tooth brushing frequency, tooth brushing before bed, the frequency of eating snack, and the preventive dental visit. Whether children experienced dental caries or not and the number of decayed or filled or missing tooth surface they had were used as outcome variables. Results: The proportion of children affected with dental caries was 46.21%. The mother's education level affected children's caries significantly (p<0.05) and children whose mother attended less than high school had more possibility of having caries than children whose mother graduated from college or more (p<0.05). This effect was still significant and got larger(p<0.05), even after controlling children's dental health behavior. Conclusion: This study showed that mother's education level affected the prevalence of caries among their preschool children. In addition, this result indicated a need for more definite policy for children's dental health in lower socioeconomic class with general dental education.
