This study is a qualitative study that explores the essential meaning of nursing through a simulation curriculum targeting nursing students. In this study, 18 students, who were 4th grade nursing students at a university in M city, Gyeongsangbuk-do, completed a simulation during the curriculum. Data collection was done through free-form reports and interviews to help students understand the part of nursing they thought through simulation classes. The collected data was analyzed using Krippendorff's phenomenological method. As a result of analyzing the meaning of nursing through simulation class, 3 categories, 10 topics, and 28 meaningful statements were derived. The three categories were derived as 'virtual nursing', 'thinking nursing', and 'together nursing'. As a result of this study, nursing students were seeking their own solution to solve nursing in unpredictable situations based on the philosophy of nursing through virtual simulation. It is expected that this will be used as basic data to develop various and in-depth simulation education programs in the future.
Purpose: As health care needs for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) are becoming increasingly important, it has become imperative for the nurses to be attentive towards their health problems and provide nursing care with an open-minded attitude. Due to limited opportunity to provide direct nursing care to LGBT patients, it is hypothesized that simulation would provide good opportunity for students to experience LGBT nursing care in a safe environment. This study was conducted to develop and apply simulation of LGBT nursing care to ultimately provide unbiased nursing care for LGBT population and prepare basic data for LGBT nursing education. Methods: This study was a single-group pre-post experimental design study for 57 senior nursing students based on the comparison of existing LGBT knowledge, general attitude towards LGBT, and nursing attitude towards LGBT before and after simulation. The scenario content included discussion of coming out issue, providing sexual health information, and supportive nursing care for LGBT population. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics and Wilcoxon signed rank. Results: Simulation education-led to a significant increase in LGBT knowledge and nursing attitude. However, there was no change in the general attitude towards LGBT. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that LGBT education using simulation may be effective for nursing students and nurses from the point of concern for LGBT population. It is hypothesized that future LGBT educational programs might need more detailed information from both care recipients and nurses. Finally, LGBT education needs to be included in the nursing education curriculum.
Purpose: This study was conducted to develop and apply simulation-based nursing education program for post-myomectomy care in nursing students. Methods: One group pre-post design was utilized. One hundred and thirty two participants consisting of 66 nursing students 132 participants consisting of 66 nursing students team were recruited. The data were collected from March 2 to June 12, 2015. Eight hours of simulation-based education program for post-myomectomy care was operated. Forty five items of Clinical Competence Assessment Scale was developed and content validity was tested using the content validity index. Results: The total score of Clinical Competence Assessment Scale was 90 and mean score of it was 82 (SD 4.2). The item showing the lowest mean score was 'education for Foley catheter management'. Mean score of performance was 92.7%, education 90.2% and assessment 89.9% respectively. Conclusion: The findings suggest that it would be useful to use the simulation-based education program for post-myomectomy care for evaluating clinical performance in nursing students.
Purpose: The purpose of this review was to evaluate the effects of emergency nursing simulation program on nursing students and nurses. Methods: This systematic review was performed as per the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses and using the R program meta package (version 4.9-2). RISS, KISS, and DBpia Library databases were searched for studies published between June 2000 and August 2018 using the following key words: ($Emerge^*$ OR nursing) AND ($nurs^*$ OR simulation). Selected studies were assessed for methodological quality using Risk of Bias for Non randomized Studies. Results: 7 studies were identified and all of them met the inclusion criteria. The outcome variables were significant clinical performance, self-efficacy except knowledge, and problem-solving ability. Conclusion: This review provides updated evidence of the simulation-based education program in emergency nursing. Further studies are required to increase generalizability using randomized population, research design and controlled trials with sufficient sample size. Moreover, valid measurements are needed to assess the main outcomes.
Purpose: This research was a descriptive study of nursing activities observed in nursing simulation during a senior nursing student practicum. Content and frequencies of nursing activities during the simulation practice were identified. Methods: Thirty-six episodes of pediatric nursing simulation were videotaped. Both verbalizations and descriptions of nonverbal behaviors were recorded from the videotapes. The data were coded and analyzed. The coded nursing activities were evaluated for frequency and purpose of interaction. Results: Average time per simulation episodes was 27 minutes and ranged from 3.30 to 32.54 minutes. Nursing activities in these simulation episodes included nursing assessments such as vital sign measurement, associated symptom assessment, and check of patient condition, nursing interventions such as medication, tepid water massage, fluid therapy, provision of oxygen, suctioning, hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia management, communication such as parent education, procedure guidance, and communication among providers. Activities in assessment were most frequent, and among them, vital sign measurement and check of patient condition were more frequent than others. Conclusion: Students showed enhanced nursing activities such as more frequent nursing assessment, communication and interventions in their simulation experience. Therefore simulation experience can be considered as one strategies to provide nursing students with better and more intense practicum experience.
Purpose: To measure the level of reflection, this study analyzes diaries written by third-year nursing students before and after the debriefing stage in simulation training. A qualitative study using diary entries from 15 nursing students to explore reflection depth. Methods: Students engaged in simulation training and the debriefing stage, documenting their reflections in diaries. Before and after debriefing, reflections were rated from Level 1 (reflectivity) to Level 7 (theoretical reflectivity). Results: The total number of reflection levels rose significantly from 545 to 829 post-debriefing, enhancing higher-order reflection. The shift signifies a move from superficial to deep reflection, highlighting debriefing's role in fostering critical thinking. Conclusion: The findings underscore the critical role of debriefing in enhancing reflective thinking in nursing education. There is a demonstrated need for further research into the specific elements of debriefing that are most effective at promoting deep reflection. Future studies should conduct comparative analyses of different debriefing methods and approaches across various educational settings. This research could lay the foundation for designing more effective debriefing strategies that foster critical thinking and improve learning outcomes in nursing education.
Purpose: This is a project report of the development of consecutive clinical nursing practicum modules using simulation encompassing the essentials of nursing over 4 years of university level education. Methods: The project was conducted from May to December in 2011 in a college of nursing in Seoul, Korea. Six nursing faculty members from different major subjects at the university participated in the project. The theoretical framework was sought in the first phase, resulting in utilizing Neuman's Systems Model. The principles of developing the contents of and the links between the modules were set up in the second phase, presented as complexity, diversity, and comprehensiveness. The details in the individual module were fleshed out in the third phase. Results: Eight clinical nursing modules using simulation were developed and presented in a table in detail. The complexity, diversity, and comprehensiveness of each module increased in depth and breadth in a consecutive order. Conclusion: It is hoped that this module is a decent curricular exemplar demonstrating comprehensive nursing practice education using a simulation technique.
Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the effects of a simulation practicum using standardized patients on nursing student's communication skills, critical thinking disposition and clinical competency. Methods: A one group pretest-posttest design was used. The participants consisted of 45 fourth year nursing students at G university. This study developed 2 scenarios for patients with diabetes mellitus and the simulation was conducted for an average of approximately 14 hours. Data were analyzed with descriptive analysis, t-tests and Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ using SPSS 21.0 program. Results: Communication skills, clinical competency and self-confidence for diabetic care were statistically improved; however, critical thinking disposition was not improved compared to that of pretest. Conclusion: Simulation practicum using standardized patients may be effective in enhancing communication skills, clinical competency and self-confidence for diabetic care among nursing students. In addition, standardized patients simulation program to promote the critical thinking needs to be developed and further research related to standardized patients simulation is in need.
