Purpose: We developed a virtual reality (VR) program for use in pediatric nursing practicums to help nursing students learn to measure vital signs in children. Methods: The analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation model was employed between July 2021 and December 2021 at a university in South Korea. In the analysis phase, in-depth interviews were conducted with four nursing students, two nursing school graduates, and four experts. The topic and contents of the VR program were settled in the design phase. The VR program was developed and subsequently used and evaluated by 20 nursing students and four experts. Results: The contents of the VR program for pediatric nursing practicums included the measurement of vital signs in a newborn baby and a young child, as well as an evaluation system. The mean score for the nursing students' satisfaction with practice was 4.02 out of 5 points. The mean scores for overall satisfaction with the VR program were 4.15 and 4.79 out of 5 points for nursing students and experts, respectively. Conclusion: The VR program developed in this study allows nursing students to practice measuring vital signs in children, thus improving the students' clinical performance in pediatric nursing.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a tool to evaluate the nursing competency of ambulatory nurses and to verify the reliability and validity of the developed tool for use in general hospitals. Methods: The evaluation tool for ambulatory nursing competency was developed through a literature review and tests for validity and reliability. Results: Subsequent to a review of the literature on nursing performance of ambulatory nurses, a 12 item questionnaire was developed. Through factor analysis, 12 items in a 2 factor solution were derived. Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ coefficient of the final instrument was .86. Conclusion: The assessment tool developed in this study allows for objective assessments of nursing competencies in relation to the competencies expected of ambulatory care nurses. It is hoped that the assessment tool can be used for empirical verification and to provide basic data for establishing the necessary policies to secure outstanding human resources.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze key performance indicators using a balanced scorecard in the nursing department of hospitals, and to find useful suggestions for future research. Methods: Before starting the literature search clear inclusion and exclusion criteria were determined. After that, were viewed 41 studies from the RISS, KISS, National assembly library, and NDSLDB. Data were collected on October 17, 2013. Researchers developed an analytic framework for the literature review using a balanced score card development process and construction steps of previous studies. This framework had 10 steps related to the balanced score card development process. Results: A total of 10 studies met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. We identified 234 key performance indicators for the nursing department. The average number was 6.6 in finance perspective, 8.6 in perspective, 11.9 in internal process perspective, and 6.2 in learning and growth perspective. We found that 173 indicators had been cited only once. 61 indicators were cited over twice. Further, 8 indicators employed different perspectives on different studies. Conclusion: The results of the present study summarize useful information on recent trends on key performance indicators using a balanced score card in the nursing department of hospitals. These results will help develop key performance indicators and provide directions for future research.
Purpose: In this study differences in levels of performance and importance of nursing jobs were explored in relation to levels of work experience. Method: The sample was chosen by convenient sampling (N=363) and a cross-sectional study design was used. Frequencies and percentages were used for descriptive statistics. ANOVA was utilized to examine differences in performance and importance of nursing jobs among three groups of nurses, divided based on levels of work experience (less than 1 year, 1 to 4 years, and 5 or more years). Results: Regarding performance of nursing jobs, novice nurses provided more support for patients, but provided less assessment of patients (i.e., investigation of levels of nutrition and exercise, and observation of verbal, and non-verbal behavior, and levels of cognition). Regarding the importance of nursing jobs, nursing linked to exercise and activities, and post-operative and excretion care were considered to be less important among novice nurses than among experienced nurses. Conclusion: Different training programs should be developed and provided to nurses according to levels of work experience. By doing so, it will be feasible to minimize differences in quality of nursing care triggered by different levels of work experience.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify effects of self-evaluation using smartphone recording on competency in nursing skills, satisfaction and learning motivations in nursing students'. The setting was the open laboratory hours. Methods: A quasi-experimental pre/post-test design was conducted in September 2015. The participants were 82 sophomore nursing students from one University. The experimental group did self-evaluation by watching recorded video clips of their performance. The control group did not have any self-evaluation. The primary outcomes were scores from the foley catheterization checklist, scores from a student satisfaction tool, and scores from a learning motivation tool. Data were analyzed using ${\chi}^2$ test, Fisher's exact test, independent t-test, and paired t-test. Results: There was a significant higher mean score in levels of satisfaction by students in the experimental group compared to the control group (t=2.26, p=.027). In addition, improvement in communication skills by the experimental group was significantly higher than improvement in the control group (t=3.96, p<.001). Conclusion: Findings show that self-evaluation using smartphone recordings has positive effects on increasing both communication skills and satisfaction with practice during open laboratory hours. These results indicate that, self-evaluation using smartphone recording is useful as a supplement to traditional open laboratory education.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a simulation based clinical reasoning practice program on clinical competence in nursing students. The program was based on the theoretical frameworks of simulation models and experiential learning theory. Methods: The program consisted of eight scenarios which includes three main symptoms (abdominal pain, changes in mental status, dyspnea), for improvement of clinical competencies in nursing students. A nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used for evaluation of the effects of the program. Fifty-two junior nursing students in Y University participated in the experimental group (n=25) or control group (n=27). Critical thinking was measured using a self-administered questionnaire. Clinical judgment and clinical performance were measured by a rater using the Rubric. Descriptive analysis, t-test, Mann-Whitney U, Wilcoxon signed rank test was used for data analyses. Results: Clinical judgment and clinical performance increased in the experimental group, but there were no significant differences in critical thinking. Conclusion: Results indicate that the program developed in this study is a useful strategy to enhance clinical judgment and clinical performance in nursing students. However, the program did not significantly enhance critical thinking disposition, and further study is needed to measure integrated clinical competence including critical thinking skills.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a scenario and evaluate students' performance in simulation learning of care for patients with asthma in emergency units. Methods: Meetings of experts were used to develop a scenario based on actual patients and textbook material. An evaluation protocol was developed to evaluate the simulation learning. The scenario was used in 2006 with six groups of 26 senior nursing students who participated voluntarily. Results: The scenario was developed according to the nursing process for 15 minutes of simulation learning. The nursing students were able to demonstrate their knowledge and skills. The results showed a need to improve problem solving ability. In the self-evaluation, the students reported that simulation learning helped them to integrate their knowledge to practice and recognize their weaknesses and strengths. However, the scores for self-confidence about patient care after the simulation learning were low (4.8/10). Conclusion: The scenario in this study gave the students the experience of providing qualified and secure nursing care under conditions similar to reality. Further development of a variety of scenarios for simulation learning is needed.
Purpose: This study was performed to give direction to quality improvement strategies of nursing services by comparing the differences in quality perceptions and satisfaction for nursing services between patients and nurses in small-medium sized general hospitals with 200 beds. Method: The subjects, who were 150 inpatients and 162 nurses of 4 general hospitals in a community, answered a self-report questionnaire with a SERVQUAL scale. Result: There were differences between patients' and nurses' expectations and perceptions of nursing service and satisfaction. In the service expectation, the highest factor was 'the responsiveness', and in the perceived performance, the highest was the 'assurance'. In addition, overall patients' perceptions on nursing services showed higher than nurses'. There were positive correlations among the expectations and perceptions on nursing service, and satisfaction. The correlation between perception and satisfaction was higher than the correlation between expectations and satisfaction. Conclusion: To improve the nursing service quality at small-medium hospitals, strengthening the 'assurance' factor and improving the nursing service support system is needed. Also, this study on nurses' perceived nursing service at small-medium sized hospitals should be duplicated.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify factors that affect nursing students' clinical practice ability. Methods: The data were collected from 303 nursing students who had more than 500 hours of experience in clinical practicum at 4 universities in Seoul and the metropolitan area. The instruments consisted of 27 items of critical thinking, 19 items of professionalism, 40 items of self reported leadership, 20 items of communication evaluation tool, and 61 items of nursing practice performance evaluation. Results: For the clinical practicum, most difficult for nursing students were cardiopulmonary resuscitation, fecal enema, stoma care, and blood transfusion. Clinical practice abilities were positively correlated with nursing professionalism(r=.26, p<.001), leadership (r=.16, p=.007) and critical thinking(r=.12, p=.031). Professionalism(${\beta}=.32$, p=.001) was the most significant factor influencing the clinical practice ability of nursing students. Critical thinking was the second largest factor but not significant(${\beta}=.16$, p=.058). Conclusion: The findings suggest that the nursing curriculum should include nursing knowledge and nursing skills as well as various case-based or field-based decision making training programs to cultivate professionalism, critical thinking and other abilities for clinical practice.
The purpose of this study is to survey evaluation of the nurse on the current Performance Appraisal System. the need for future performance of the nurse and the opinions about the job rotation, and suggest the direction of improvement by obtaining basic data to improve personnel management of the nurse in a hosipial, the subject of the investigation. The study was conducted self-reporting questionniare survey of 330 nurses working at C hospital located in Chonbuk Province and the data was collected from May 4. 1999 through May 14. The research used measuring instrument developed by researcher for evalution about the present performance appraisal. the need for the future performanc appraisal system and the opinion of job rotaion. The analysis of the collected data was computerized using SPSS/PC+ program, calculated frequency, percentage, the mean and standard deviation and used Pearson, s Correlation Coefficients, t-test, chi- square test. Major findings are as follows. 1) As for the purpose of the current performanc appraisal, the appraiser recognized it as a security of promotion standard, while the employee saw it as a means for control as guidance and supervison of work. 2) With regard to use the result of the present performance appraisal, appraiser picked ambiguous appraisal standard, employees recognized unilateral evaluation of superior eliminated the participation of them as the highest priority. 3) In relation to the current criteria for promotion of the nurse, both appraisers and employees placed more weight on the length of clinical than performance appraisal score. 4) There is much possibility of the appraiser making an error to evaluate considering the length of performance appraisal. 5) Both appraisers and employees indicated that prospective result of performance appraisal should be used for the ability development & motivation of the individual. 6) Concerning employee's participation for performance appraisal both sides wanted by far more participation. 7) Regarding the most ideal appraisal method, both parties favored most the way added up the evaluation of the head nurse and peer review and followed by the manner the revaluation of the head nurse by considering self-evaluation. 8) As to the individual interview after the appraisal, more than 60% of appraisers responded it's not necessary, while above 88.5% of employees answered it is essential so that it is showed significantly difference between the appraisers and the employees. 9) As far as open of the evaluation result is concerned. 75% of the appraiser were against it but 80% of the employee were for it so that it showed significantly between them. The most principal reason that the employee want is that it motivates the individual's ability development and the fairness of the appraisal increases. 10) Whether the periodical rotation is necessary or not, 80% of appraisers and employees answered it's necessary, however, over 70% of them did not want the rotation. 11) Work-group Cohesiveness level within the nursing unit was attentive different from desire of the rotation, that is, the work group cohesiveness level of nurses wanting rotation was significantly lower than that of the group not desiring it.
