  • The numerical taxonomy of heterotrophic bacterial community in Lake Soyang was analysed. 95, 115, 88 and 75 strains which were isolated at each season from spring in 1987 to winter in 1988 were clustered by single matching coefficient. The diversity indices (H') were in the range of 0.511-1.684, and the community was most diverse in spring. THe seasonal variation of generic composition was significant. Of the domonant genera, Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, and Flavobacterium were representative.

  • Harpacticoid copepods are one of the most important components in the benthic meiofaunal community. In spite of their numerical significance the study of harpacticoids in Korea, as distinct from meiofauna in general (Kim et al., 1998, 2000a, b), has been limited. During the course of investigation on ecological significance of harpacticoids in the intertidal sandy shore, a new species of the genus Rhizothrix was determined and described here. (omitted)

  • A Streptomyces sp. isolated from a soil sample collected in Taejeon, Korea has previously been found to produce two new polyene antibiotics. The two new antibiotics were named "16-methyloxazolomycin (antibacterial)" and "tetrin C (antifungal)", and their chemical structures are presented elsewhere [10, 11]. In the current study, chemotaxonomy, numerical taxonomy, and ISP methods were all employed for the taxonomic study. The spore chains were spirales and the spore surface was smooth. The spore mass was a gray series and no melanin pigment was produced. On the basis of the morphological and physiological properties, the microorganism was identified to be Streptomyces erumpens, belonging to the gray series of category IV, as defined by Bergey′s Manual. Tetrin C at the concentration of 20 ${\mu}g$/ml demonstrated a potent in vivo (pot test) preventive effect against rice blast, rice sheath blight, cucumber gray mold, wheat powdery mildew, and barley leaf rust.

  • Bacteria isolated from Cheonsu Bay at 4 seasons were analyzed by numerical taxonomic method. Results of 48 morphological, physiological and biochemical tests showed different adaptability of bacteria to temperature in consequence with sampling season and isolated bacteria were able to survive at various environmental conditions, Identification results revealed that Enterobacteriaceae, Aeromonas, Pseudomonas and Vibrio were dominant genera in geterotrophic bacterial community. For each season, Aeromonas was most dominant in spring and autumn, Pseudomonas and Enterobacteriaceae in summer and winter, respectively. Cluster ananlysis was performed and all vacteria were clustered into 29 phenetic groups. Seasonal characteristics were distict in each group. Different physiological characteristics and species compositions for each season contribute to the stability and diversity of environmental ecosystem.

  • The morphological characters for 4 taxa of Korean Symplocaceae were examined. Based on morphological examination, numerical analysis was performed to clarify the taxonomic relationships among the taxa. It was found that epidermal characters of leaves, cellular deposition of petals, cellular boundary of petioles, growth of stigmas and pollen grains and their surfaces were useful diagonostic characters. From the results of PCA analysis, four taxa were grouped as species clusters including each populations. Four species of Symplocos were clustered as species groups with clear delimitation. Morphological, numerical, and palynological analyses supported the previous morphological studies on this family.

  • Studies on Trapa of Korean, Japanese, and Chinese origins have been generally limited to currently living Trapa, thereby demonstrating the lack of phylogenetic approaches. In the present study, we conducted a numerical taxonomic study on 34 Korean origin Trapa species newly discovered in peat deposits. By using the numerical taxonomy as well as geological data, we created an appearance map based on the periods and taxonomic groups of the Korean Trapa. Further, by using this appearance map, we reviewed the limitations that exist in the taxa and simultaneously discussed the adaptational environment of Trapa in each period. Although other studies have discussed new variants of Trapa worldwide, including T. litwinowii V. vassil. var. chihuensis S.F.Guan & Q.Lang of China (Guan and Lang, 1987), the present study is significant because it provides data on the origin of Korean Trapa species. The availability of such data is essential in determining the adaptational environment of the presently living Trapa. To our knowledge, this is the first report of approximately 10 newly discovered and other presently living species of Trapa. Further, the appearance map in the present study allows the use of the 10 newly discovered species and variants of 34 Trapa species indigenous to South Korea for over 1000 years, for a comparison with the currently living Trapa species. Thus, the present study results could serve as important basic data to understand the adaptational environment of the genus Trapa. from the past to the present in Korea.

  • In order to prove the similarity relationships between the basic species of oak through Electronic Data Processing System(EDPS) and numerical analysis, The analized species and datas were selected from the list of morphological observation in the thesis of T.B. Lee, 1961, "Phytogenetic study of the subgenus Lepidobalanus of the genus Quercus in Korea", and were coded by categories shown in Table 1. The value in the list were transformed into hundred percentage to standardize the observational value by each code into dimensionless. The similarity index between species were computed through formula of non-metric coefficient, $N_{jk}=\sum\limits_{i=1}^{n}\(\frac{{\mid}x_{ij}-x_{ik}{\mid}}{x_{ij}+x_{ik}}\)$, using the UNiVAC-1106, at National Computer Center. Quercus aliena, by analysis result, is most similar to Q. mongolica with the similarity index, 71.6 and Q. dentata is most far apart from Q. serrata in the relationship with index, 121.4. The above thesis of Professor, T. Lee, are closely similar with the result of this research study. But, their similar relationship are proved in quantity through numerical method in our research study. In addition, The relationships among Q. mongolica, Q. aliena and Q. serrata are found to be very similar, but Q. dentata to be enough far in similarity to other species by dendrogram shown at Fig. 1. The numerical classification through EDPS is found to be suitable method also applicable to the plant taxonomy.

  • Some multivariate discriminant analyses were done for each population of the native honeybee workers (Apis cerana), which were selected for 11 different localities in spring and 12 in summer from Korea. When the comparison for different localities was conducted, the correct assignment was averaged at 91.67% in spring and 88.44% in summer. And for the comparison between the 2 different seasons, it was averaged at 97.58%. Whereas, that regardless of seasons revealed the lowest correct assignment at 70.16%.

  • Dominant genera of heterotrophic bacteria were investigated seasonally in Kum River estuarine sediments. Numerical taxonomy on the isolated heterotrophic bacteria were carried out according to their morphological, physiological, nutritional and biochemical characters. Heterotrophic bacteria in the depths of 0 to 10 cm of sampled sediments were almost facultative anaerobes, and 77.9% to 86.9% of them were Gram negative rods. Kominant genera among the isolates were Pseudomonas, Flavobacterium, Micrococcus, Cnterobacteria and Vibrio during sampling periods. According to their character analyses by similarity index(S), the isolates were clustered in fourteen groups at clay type sediments (Site 1) and four groups at sand type sediments (Site 2).
