A numerical and experimental study has been performed on the flow in a shallow rectangular tank accompanying a vortex shedding. The model is composed of a rectangular tank with a vertical plate with a length half the width of the tank. The tank is subject to a horizontal sinusoidal oscillation. The numerical analysis shows that the pattern of vortex shedding changes considerably when the Reynolds number $R_e$ is varied from 500 to 7500. It is symmetric for $R_e$ <1500 and asymmetric for $R_e$ > 1500. The kinetic energies of the right-hand and left-hand sides of the vertical plate are used to quantify the degree of the asymmetry. Experimental visualization is carried out at $R_e$ = 3876 and 52000. The development of the streamline pattern at $R_e$ = 3876 is in closer agreement with the numerical result at $R_e$ = 1000 than that at $R_e$ =3876. The asymmetric pattern is observed at $R_e$ = 52000.

Military rotorcrafts are constantly exposed to risk from bullet impacts because they operate in a battle environment. Because bullet impact damage can be deadly to crews, the fuel tanks of military rotorcraft must be designed taking extreme situations into account. Fuel tank design factors to be considered include the internal fluid pressure, the structural stress on the part impacted, and the kinetic energy of bullet strikes. Verification testing using real objects is the best way to obtain these design data effectively, but this imposes substantial burdens due to the huge cost and necessity for long-term preparation. The use of various numerical simulation tests at an early design stage can reduce the risk of trial-and-error and improve the prediction of performance. The present study was an investigation of the effects of bullet impacts on a fuel tank assembly using numerical simulation based on SPH (smoothed particle hydrodynamics), and conducted using the commercial package, LS-DYNA. The resulting equivalent stress, internal pressure, and kinetic energy of the bullet were examined in detail to evaluate the possible use of this numerical method to obtain configuration design data for the fuel tank assembly.

Underwater acoustic power should be measured in a free field, but it is not easy to implement. In practice, the measurement could be performed in a reverberant field such as a water-filled steel tank and concrete tank. In this case, the structure and the acoustic field are strongly or weakly coupled according to material properties of the steel and water. So, characteristics of the water tank must be investigated in order to get the accurate underwater acoustic power. In detail, modal frequencies, mode shapes of the structure and frequency response functions of the acoustic field could represent the characteristics of the reverberant water tank. In this paper, the structure-acoustic coupling has been investigated on a reverberant water tank numerically and experimentally. The finite element analysis has been carried out to estimate the structural and acoustical modal parameters under the dry and water-filled conditions, respectively. In order to investigate the structure-acoustic coupling effect, the numerical analysis has been performed according to the structure stiffness change of the water tank. The acoustic frequency response functions were compared with the numerical analysis and acoustic exciting test. From the results, the structural modal frequencies of the water-filled condition have been decreased compared to those of the dry condition in the low frequency range. The acoustic frequency response functions under the coupled boundary conditions showed different patterns from those under the ideal boundary conditions such as the pressure release and rigid boundary condition, respectively.

The crashworthiness of the fuel tank of a rotorcraft is verified through the crash impact test. The crash impact test has a high risk of failure due to the application of an excessive load, which can seriously affect the overall development schedule of the aircraft. Therefore, a lot of effort has been made to minimize the possibility of failure in the actual test by carrying out a numerical analysis of the crash impact test of the fuel tank in the initial design stage. Recently, an external auxiliary fuel tank was added to increase the cruising distance. In this study, the numerical analysis results of the crash impact test based on several different shapes of the external auxiliary fuel tank are presented, in order to evaluate its crashworthiness. For the numerical analysis, smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH), which is one of the fluid-structure coupled analysis methods, is applied and the test conditions prescribed by US military standards are reflected in the analysis conditions. In addition, the material property data previously obtained by the specimen test of the actual fuel tank is applied to the numerical analysis. As a result, the equivalent stress of the fuel tank material itself and the metal fitting is provided and the possibility of acquiring data for designing the crash-worthiness of the external auxiliary fuel tank is evaluated by examining the behavior and working load of the internal mounted components.
The leakage of hazardous materials due to the defect in storage tank foundations is likely to cause tremendous fire disasters in the industry cluster area. Thus, adequate design and construction of the tank foundation is required for preventing tank leakage. In this study, four types of typical tank foundations were classified and modeled for 3D FEM analysis to perform stability evaluation on tank foundations. Furthermore, numerical analysis indicated that stress concentration just below the tank shells is 40 times that at the tank center. The settlement influence zone is about the tank radius and tank diameter in the horizontal and vertical directions, respectively. Thus, the appropriate guidelines for the design and construction of tank foundations were suggested via a comparison assessment of the numerical analysis results on the stress distribution and displacement of the tank foundations.

This paper deals with the buckling strength of the skirt structure in the spherical LNG carriers. The spherical cargo tank systems consist of spherical tank, skirt, tank cover, pump tower, etc. The skirt supports the spherical cargo tank and is connected with ship hull structure. It is designed to act as a thermal brake between the tank and the hull structure by reducing the thermal conduction from the tank to the supporting structure. It is built up of three parts, upper aluminum part, middle stainless steel part and lower carbon steel part. The 150K spherical LNG carrier was designed and carried out the strength verification under Classification Societies Rule. The design loads due to acceleration, thermal distribution, self-weight and cargo weight were estimated considering requirements of the Class Rule and numerical simulation analyses. Based on the obtained design loads and experienced project data, the initial structure scantling was carried out. To verify the structural integrity, theoretical and numerical analyses were carried out and strength was evaluated aspect of buckling capacity. The results by LR and DNV design code are shown and discussed.
Impact pressure due to sloshing is of great concern for the ship owners, designers and builders of the LNG carriers regarding the safety of LNG containment system and hull structure. Sloshing of LNG in partially filled tank has been an active area of research with numerous experimental and numerical investigations over the past decade. In order to accurately predict the sloshing impact load, a new numerical method was developed for accurate resolution of violent sloshing flow inside a three-dimensional LNG tank including wave breaking, jet formation, gas entrapping and liquid-gas interaction. The sloshing flow inside a membrane-type LNG tank is simulated numerically using the Finite-Analytic Navier-Stokes (FANS) method. The governing equations for two-phase air and water flows are formulated in curvilinear coordinate system and discretized using the finite-analytic method on a non-staggered grid. Simulations were performed for LNG tank in transverse and longitudinal motions including horizontal, vertical, and rotational motions. The predicted impact pressures were compared with the corresponding experimental data. The validation results clearly illustrate the capability of the present two-phase FANS method for accurate prediction of impact pressure in sloshing LNG tank including violent free surface motion, three-dimensional instability and air trapping effects.

This paper provides the results of numerical and theoretical predictions of oil outflows from damaged single-hull and double-hull ships.Theoretical equations derived from the unsteady Bernoulli equation and a CFD method for multi-phase flow analysis were used to estimate the oil outflow rate from cargo tank. The predicted oil outflow rate from a single-hull cargo tank damaged due to grounding and collision accidents showed a good agreement with the available experimental results in both numerical and theoretical analyses. However, in the case of the double-hull conditions, the time variation of the amount of water and oil mixture inside the ballast tank predicted by the theoretical equation showed some different behavior from the numerical results. The reason was that the interaction of the oil flow with the water inflow in the ballast tank was not reflected in the theoretical equations. In the problems of the initial pressure condition in the cargo and ballast tanks, the oil outflow and water inflow were delayed at the pressure condition that the tanks were sealed. When the flow interaction between the oil and water in the ballast tank was less complicated, the theoretical and the numerical results showed a good agreement with each other.
Varying bathymetry significantly affects on the wave propagation and motion response of floating body. Coupled-mode wave theory is adopted to describe the incident wave properly in varying region. The results of waves and motion response are compared to those from numerical wave tank, and the agreement is favorable. The sloped bottom is modeled and its effect on the floating body is discussed.
For decades, solitary waves have commonly been used to simulate tsunami conditions in numerical studies. However, the main component of a tsunami waveform acts at completely different spatial and temporal distributions than a solitary waveform. Thus, this study applied a 2-D numerical wave tank that included a non-reflected tsunami generation system based on Navier-Stokes equations (LES-WASS-2D) to directly simulate the run-up of a tsunami-like solitary wave on a slope. First, the waveform and velocity due to the virtual depth factor were applied to the numerical wave tank to generate a tsunami, which made it possible to generate the wide waveform of a tsunami, which was not reproduced with the existing solitary wave approximation theory. Then, to validate the applied numerical model, the validity and effectiveness of the numerical wave tank were verified by comparing the results with the results of a laboratory experiment on a tsunami run-up on a smooth impermeable 1:19.85 slope. Using the numerical results, the run-up characteristics due to a tsunami-like solitary wave on an impermeable slope were also discussed in relation to the volume ratio. The maximum run-up heights increased with the ratio of the tsunami waveform. Therefore, the tsunami run-up is highly likely to be underestimated compared to a real tsunami if the solitary wave of the approximation theory is applied in a tsunami simulation in a coastal region.
