  • The fire whirl occurring in the urban and/or wildland fire is generated by the instabilities of atmosphere. The fire whirl is a rare phenomenon, but highly destructive because it has high inhalation and lift force. In this study, experimental and numerical studies are performed with oriental oak leaves, for investigating of the fire whirl characteristics occurred in wildland fire. As a result of experiment, the circulation intensity increases as the induced air speed increases, then the heat release rate and flame height increase 22.8%, 18.4% compared with open fire in highest circulation. Furthermore the numerical results shows same trend with the experiment.

  • Dynamic characteristics of thermally-forced stratification process in a square enclosure with a linear temperature profile at the side walls have been investigated through flow visualization experiment and numerical analysis. The experiment was performed on air with the Rayleigh numbers of order $10^5$. A particle tracer method is used for the flow visualization and to obtain a sudden linear temperature profile at the side walls copper blocks which already have a linear temperature profile are come into contact with the thin copper plates of the test section. Immediately a meridional circulation is developed and heat transfer takes place from the wall to the interior region by circulation of fluid and finally a thermal stratification is achieved. In the numerical study, QUICK scheme for convective terms, SIMPLE algorithm for pressure correction, and the implicit method for the time marching are adopted for the integration of conservation equations. Comparison of flow visualization and numerical results shows that the developing flow patterns are very similar in dynamic nature even though there is a time lag due to the inevitable time delay in setting up a linear temperature profile. For high Rayleigh numbers, the oscillatory motion is likely to take place and stratified region is extended. However, initial temperature adjustment process is much slower than that for low Rayleigh numbers.

  • The Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics is one of the most widely used mesh-free numerical method for thermo-fluid dynamics. Due to its Lagrangian nature and simplicity, it is recently gaining popularity in simulating complex physics with large deformations. In this study, the 3D single/two-phase numerical simulations are performed on the Liquid Metal Reactor (LMR) centralized sloshing benchmark experiment using the SPH parallelized using a GPU. In order to capture multi-phase flows with a large density ratio more effectively, the original SPH density and continuity equations are re-formulated in terms of the normalized-density. Based upon this approach, maximum sloshing height and arrival time in various experimental cases are calculated by using both single-phase and multi-phase SPH framework and the results are compared with the benchmark results. Overall, the results of SPH simulations show excellent agreement with all the benchmark experiments both in qualitative and quantitative manners. According to the sensitivity study of the particle-size, the prediction accuracy is gradually increasing with decreasing the particle-size leading to a higher resolution. In addition, it is found that the multi-phase SPH model considering both liquid and air provides a better prediction on the experimental results and the reality.

  • In order to compare numerical analyses made by Song and Kim needed for predicting gas and water filling with experimental results we conducted an experiment to recover a test projectile (43.7 kg with a 155 mm diameter) at a velocity of 775 m/s in a soft recovery system with a length of 179 m using pressurized gas and filled water. The soft recovery system consisting of a series of pressure tubes had a diaphragm, piston, and water plug for filling the pressurized gas and water. We installed a continuous wave Doppler radar system for velocity measurements of the test projectile travelling in the pressure tubes and pressure transducers for measuring the pressure in the soft recovery system. Continuous wave Doppler radar has the advantage of achieving real-time measurements of the velocity of a test projectile. The velocity-time curve of the test projectile, measured using the continuous wave Doppler radar, and the pressure profile were compared with the numerical analysis results. The experiment results show good agreement with the numerical analysis results based on the one-dimensional Euler equation with an HLL Riemann solver.

  • Flow prediction was carried out through observational survey and three dimensional multi-layered numerical diagnostic model experiment to clarify the time and spatial structure of tidal current and residual flow dominant in the sea exchange and material circulation of the waters around Geumo Islands in the southern waters of Korea. The horizontal variation of tidal current is so large that it causes asymmetric tidal mixing due to horizontal eddies and the topographical effect creating convergence and dispersion of flow direction and velocity. Due to strong tidal currents flowing northwest-southeast, counterclockwise and clockwise eddies are formed on the left and right sides of the south of Sori Island. These topographical eddies are created by horizontal turbulence and bottom friction causing nonlinear effects. Baroclinic density flows are less than 5 cm/s at coastal area in summer and the entire sea area in winter. The wind driven currents assuming summer and winter seasonal winds are also less than 5 cm/s and the current flow rate is high in winter. Density current in summer and wind driven current in winter have a relatively greater effect on the net residual flows (tidal residual current + density current + density driven current) around Geumo Islands Sea area.

  • In this study a drift prediction model based on fluid dynamics theory is introduced. The essential effects of environmental loads and target characteristics are taken into account from a fluid dynamics point of view. The governing equations of motion are derived from Netwon's law of dynamics. In the mathematical formulation only three degrees of freedom(surge, sway, yaw) of the drifting object are assumed and the environmental loads considered are the forces and moments by wind and current. A computer algorithm for this model is implemented to obtain the numerical result in the time domain. The preliminary tests for model verification are conducted and the results are compared with the field experiment data as well as leeway formula suggested from the field test data.

  • This paper presents the tangent stiffness method for 3-D geometrically nonlinear folding analysis of a reversal arch. Experimental tests are conducted to verify the numerical analysis. The tangent stiffness method can accurately evaluate the geometrical nonlinearity due to the element translating as a rigid body, and the method can exactly handle the large rotation of the element in space. The arch in the experiment is made from a thin flat bar, and it is found that the folding process of the arch may be captured exactly by the numerical analysis with a model consisting of only 18 elements with the same properties.

  • A two-dimensional numerical experiment and field observations were conducted to evaluate changes in sea water movement and the water quality environment related to comprehensive projects of waterfront development around Kwangyang Bay on the south coast of Korea. Tidal flow velocities, especially in the western part of the bay, were considerably slower as a result of the development projects. Accordingly, the seawater exchange ratio reduced from 38.7% to 26.3%. The impact of dredging work on the water quality environment was much stronger than expected. Furthermore, after the completion of the industrial parks and container-exclusive wharfs, COD from the waste water treatment plant will be dispersed extensively into the adjacent water at a level of less than 0.1 mg/l for up to 142.5 $\textrm{km}^2$. Therefore, consistent monitoring and management of the water quality environment is strongly recommended.

  • The distribution of tidal currents in Asan Bay was simulated by a numerical experiment. A homogeneous and single layer model with bottom stress taken into account was used. Although the effective configuration of the bay differs significantly between the high tide and the low tkde, its form is assumed to be fixed as a first approximation. The advective term is particularly large because the tidal range of 810cm is large compared to the depth and the changes of velocities occur abruptly. The results of calculations agree fairly well with the observations. For example, the tidal range at Manhoriis amplified 15cm higher and the phase lag is five minutes later than at the mouth of the bay. It also can generally be said that, with the semidiurnal tide at the mouth of the bay, the tidal range is increased toward the inner corner and that tidal currents are found to be large at the deeper part of the bay.
