A comprehensive experimental program of cyclic tests on 1:3-scale models of bridge piers is going to be carried out at the Laboratory of Structures and Materials of the University of Basilicata. The testing models include eight RC single shaft piers with hollow circular cross section. Four piers have been realised using corroded steel rebars. In this paper, the results of preliminary numerical simulation analyses of the cyclic behaviour of the piers, carried out with Opensees using fiber-based models, are presented. Pull-out and lap-splice effects of steel rebars have been taken into account in the numerical analyses. First, the experimental specimens and the test set up are presented. Next, the results of the numerical analyses are discussed. In the numerical analyses, different configurations and levels of corrosion have been considered. The effective stiffness and equivalent damping of the piers is reported as a function of pier ductility and pier drift.
A few blast experiments are conducted to investigate the behavior of one-way reinforced concrete(RC) slabs under blast loading. Reflected blast characteristics as well as displacements and damage patterns of RC slabs are measured. Numerical models are also established in the software ANSYS AUTODYN to reproduce the experiments on RC slabs. The numerical models are distinguished from each other by different boundary conditions at the edges of RC slabs, which are assumed to reproduce displacements and damage patterns resulted from the experiments. The boundary condition of the experimental tests is estimated from the numerical simulation results. From the numerical simulation results, the boundary condition should be improved in order to measure the accurate maximum displacement in the experimental tests.

Simulations of atmospheric diffusion process under stable and unstable conditions were carried out using both numerical and experimental methods. Results from the previous study show that numerical simulation using 3-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equation and density deviation are in good agreement with typical plume pattern. In this study, we use experimental data of temperature and wind profile obtained from a thermally stratified wind tunnel as initial conditions for numerical simulation and compare the results.
A rock mass containing non-persistent joints can only fail if the joints propagate and coalesce through an intact rock bridge. Shear strength of rock mass containing non-persistent joints is highly affected by the both, mechanical behavior and geometrical configuration of non-persistent joints located in a rock mass. Existence of rock joints and rock bridges are the most important factors complicating mechanical responses of a rock mass to stress loading. The joint-bridge interaction and bridge failure dominates mechanical behavior of jointed rock masses and the stability of rock excavations. The purpose of this review paper is to present techniques, progresses and the likely future development directions in experimental and numerical modelling of a non-persistent joint failure behaviour. Such investigation is essential to study the fundamental failures occurring in a rock bridge, for assessing anticipated and actual performances of the structures built on or in rock masses. This paper is divided into two sections. In the first part, experimental investigations have been represented followed by a summarized numerical modelling. Experimental results showed failure mechanism of a rock bridge under different loading conditions. Also effects of the number of non-persistent joints, angle between joint and a rock bridge, lengths of the rock bridge and the joint were investigated on the rock bridge failure behaviour. Numerical simulation results are used to validate experimental outputs.
A numerical and experimental study is made of thermal behavior of a hot chuck which is specially designed for flip-chip bonders. The hot chuck consists of radiant heat sources and a heated plate of very high conductivity, which is for achievement of high-speed heat-up. A simplified numerical model is developed to simulate unsteady thermal behavior of the heated plate. Parallel experimental work is also conducted for a prototype of the hot chuck. Based on the experimental data, the numerical model is tuned to improve the reliability and accuracy. Design analysis using the numerical model is conducted. The results of numerical computations illustrate that the radiant heater system adopted in this study satisfies the key design requirements for a high-performance hot chuck.

This work presents numerical results, using OpenFOAM, of the flow in the swirl flow generator test rig developed at Politehnica University of Timisoara, Romania. The work shows results computed by solving the unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes equations. The unsteady method couples the rotating and stationary parts using a sliding grid interface based on a GGI formulation. Turbulence is modeled using the standard k-${\varepsilon}$ model, and block structured wall function ICEM-Hexa meshes are used. The numerical results are validated against experimental LDV results, and against design velocity profiles. The investigation shows that OpenFOAM gives results that are comparable to the experimental and design profiles. The unsteady pressure fluctuations at four different positions in the draft tube is recorded. A Fourier analysis of the numerical results is compared whit that of the experimental values. The amplitude and frequency predicted by the numerical simulation are comparable to those given by the experimental results, though slightly over estimated.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the phenomena of the thermally-induced vibration for the flexible space structure due to abrupt change of radiation heating circumstance using the numerical analyze and experiment test. In order to verify this structure, numerical approaches on the simplified flexible tube were compared with experimental test results at the ground experimental facility In this analyze, it was found that the thermal deformation occurs firstly due to fast radiation heating of flexible structure and then the thermally-induced vibration would be induced due to small periodic change of temperature. According to comparison of numerical and experimental result, in case of no tip mass, the first mode vibration by the numerical analyze was O.78Hz same as that of the experimental result However in case of increase tip-masses of 8g l6g, 50g and 100g, the first modes vibration theoretical analyze were 1.75Hz, 1.3Hz, 0.87Hz and O.73Hz, in decrease trend respectively and those by experimental test were 234Hz, 1.5Hz, O.78Hz and O.78Hz in decrease trend respectively Although using the simpled equation for the estimation, the estimation results were similar to experimental results.
The focus of this research effort was characterization of the flexural and tensile properties of a specific ultra-high-strength, fiber-reinforced concrete material. The material exhibited a mean unconfined compressive strength of approximately 140 MPa and was reinforced with short, randomly distributed alkali resistant glass fibers. As a part of the study, coupled experimental, analytical and numerical investigations were performed. Flexural and direct tension tests were first conducted to experimentally characterize material behavior. Following experimentation, a micromechanically-based analytical model was utilized to calculate the material's tensile failure response, which was compared to the experimental results. Lastly, to investigate the relationship between the tensile failure and flexural response, a numerical analysis of the flexural experiments was performed utilizing the experimentally developed tensile failure function. Results of the experimental, analytical and numerical investigations are presented herein.

Numerical simulation of chip formation during high speed machining requires knowing the friction at tool/chip interface. This parameter is hardly identified and generally the loadings (temperature, force) during the identification are not similar to those encountered during machining. Thus, Coulomb friction identified with pin-on-disc device is often used to conduct numerical simulation. The used of this technique cannot leads to good numerical results of chip formation compared to the experimental tests especially in the case of low uncut chip thickness. In this contribution, we propose a new method to evaluate the friction at tool/chip interface. In fact several Coulomb friction parameters are identified corresponding to several parts of the cutting tool. Experimental tests have been conducted allowed us to determinate both the level and the distribution of the Coulomb friction. Experimental results are also compared to the results of orthogonal cutting simulation. We show that this technique allows predicting accuracy results of chip formation.
The aim of a benchmark study is carried out nine methods are employed for ULS analysis which implicitly predict the ultimate strength of aluminium stiffened panels under axial compression. For this purpose, DNV PULS, experimental and numerical data on the ultimate strength of panels were collected. Comparison of these experimental / numerical, DNV PULS / numerical, results with theoretical solutions by the candidate methods is performed. Also it's compared that ALPS/ULSAP program is based on closed-form formula for the ULS of plates and grillages under axial compression. It is considered that ALPS/ULSAP methodology provides quite accurate and reasonable ULS calculations by a comparison with more refined FEA. Comparison of these experimental data, numerical, computational software results with the simplified solutions obtained by the candidate methods is then performed. The model uncertainties associated with the candidate methods are studied in terms of mean bias and COV (i.e., coefficient of variation) against experiments and numerical solutions, and the relative performance of the various methods is discussed.
