  • Surface deflections have a great effect on the external appearance of automobiles. Usually, they are occurred on large flat panels containing sudden shape changes and of very small size about $\pm$30$\sim$300$\mu$m. Since the current numerical method is not sufficient for predicting these defects, the correction of these defects still depends on trial and error, which requires a great deal of time and expense. Consequently, developing the numerical method to predict and prevent these defects is very important far improving cosmetic surface qualities. In this study, an evaluation system that can analyze surface deflections using numerical simulation and a visualization system are reported. To calculate the surface deflections numerically, robust algorithms and simulation methodologies are suggested and to visualize them quantitatively, the curvature variation algorithm is proposed. To verify the developed systems, the experimental die of the handle portion of exterior door is analyzed. The results showed that the experimental and simulational visualization are in good agreement. Compensation methods to correct the surface deflections are also tested. The evaluation system proposed in this paper could be used to predict and minimize the occurrence of surface deflections in die manufacturing.

  • Pipe wall-thinning by flow-accelerated corrosion (FAC) and various types of erosion is a significant and costly damage phenomenon in secondary piping systems of nuclear power plants (NPPs). Most NPPs have management programs to ensure pipe integrity due to wall-thinning that includes periodic measurements for pipe wall thicknesses using ultrasonic tests (UTs). Nevertheless, thinning evaluations are not easy because the amount of thickness reduction being measured is often quite small compared to the accuracy of the inspection technique. U.S. Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) had proposed Total Point Method (TPM) as a thinning occurrence evaluation method, which is a very useful method for detecting locally thinned pipes or fittings. However, evaluation engineers have to discern manually the measurement data because there are no numerical algorithm for TPM. In this study, numerical algorithms were developed based on non-parametric and parametric statistical method.

  • Nowadays, steel fiber reinforced concretes (SFRCs) are widely used in practical applications. Significant experimental research has thus been carried out to determine the constitutive equations that represent the behavior of SFRCs under multiaxial loadings. However, numerical modelling of SFRCs via FEM has been challenging due to the complexities of the implementation of these constitutive equations. In this study, following the literature, a plasticity model is constructed for the behavior of SFRCs that involves the Willam-Warnke failure surface with the relevant evolution laws and a non-associated flow rule for determining the plastic deformations. For the precise (yet rapid) integration of the constitutive equations, an explicit substepping scheme consisting of yield intersection and drift correction algorithms is employed and thus implemented in ABAQUS via UMAT. The FEM model includes various material parameters that are determined from the experimental data. Three sets of parameters are used in the numerical simulations. While the first set is from the experiments that are conducted in this study on SFRC specimens with various contents of steel fibers, the other two sets are from the experiments reported in the literature. The response of SFRCs under multiaxial compression obtained from various numerical simulations are compared with the experimental data. The good agreement between numerical results and the experimental data indicates that not only the adopted plasticity model represents the behavior of SFRCs very well but also the implemented integration scheme can be employed in practical applications of SFRCs.

  • In subjects dealing with when historically important events took place, the application of memory laws can enhance the educational effectiveness. Methods to increase memory rate by applying additional information such as dots, lines, bars, etc. are being studied in numerical memory-based studies. This study proposes a method of applying the long-term memory mechanism that was lacking in the previous study. This is a mechanism that corrects the error data entered by user's mistake, and tries to increase the memory rate by giving a memorable effect. To this end, we propose the unique processes that are carried out in the mobile environments and we implement and evaluate the error correction numerical algorithms.

  • This study deals with a method to identify damages of free vibrating thin plate structures using the combined finite element method (FEM) and the advanced uniform micro-genetic algorithm. To solve the inverse problem using the combined method, this study uses several natural frequencies instead of mode shapes in a structure as the measured data. The technique described in this paper allows us not only to detect the damaged elements but also to find their numbers, locations, and the extent of damage. To demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method, the algorithm is applied to a free vibrating steel thin plate structures with arbitrary damages. From the standpoint of computation efficiency, the proposed method in this study has advantages when compared with the existing simple genetic algorithms. The numerical examples demonstrate that the method using micro-genetic algorithms can possibly detect correctly the damages of thin plates from only several natural frequencies instead of their natural modes.

  • Many applications require the clustering of large amounts of high dimensional data. Most automated clustering techniques have been developed but they do not work effectively and/or efficiently on high dimensional (numerical) data, which is due to the so-called “curse of dimensionality”. Moreover, the high dimensional data often contain a significant amount of noise, which causes additional ineffectiveness of algorithms. Therefore, it is necessary to look over the structure and various characteristics of high dimensional data and to develop algorithm that support clustering adapted to applications of the high dimensional database. In this paper, we investigate and classify the existing high dimensional clustering methods by analyzing the strength and weakness of each method for specific applications and comparing them. Especially, in terms of efficiency and effectiveness, we compare the traditional algorithms with CLIP which are developed by us. This study will contribute to develop more advanced algorithms than the current algorithms.

  • During the last two decades, much joint research regarding vibration based methods has been done, leading to developing various algorithms and techniques. These algorithms and techniques can be divided into modal methods and signal methods. Although modal methods have been widely used for health monitoring and damage detection, signal methods due to higher efficiency have received considerable attention in various fields, including aerospace, mechanical and civil engineering. Signal-based methods are derived directly from the recorded responses through signal processing algorithms to detect damage. According to different signal processing techniques, signal-based methods can be divided into three categories including time domain methods, frequency domain methods, and time-frequency domain methods. The frequency domain methods are well-known and interest in using them has increased in recent years. To determine dynamic behaviours, to identify systems and to detect damages of bridges, different methods and algorithms have been proposed by researchers. In this study, a new algorithm to detect seismic damage in the bridge's piers is suggested. To evaluate the algorithm, an analytical model of a bridge with simple spans is used. Based on the algorithm, before and after damage, the bridge is excited by a sine force, and the piers' responses are measured. The dynamic specifications of the bridge are extracted by Power Spectral Density function. In addition, the Least Square Method is used to detect damage in the bridge's piers. The results indicate that the proposed algorithm can identify the seismic damage effectively. The algorithm is output-only method and measuring the excitation force is not needed. Moreover, the proposed approach does not need numerical models.

  • This paper presents a multi-costraint optimization model for redundant system reliability. The optimization model is usually formulated as a nonlinear integer programming (NIP) problem. This paper reformulates the NIP problem into a linear integer programming (LIP) problem. Then an efficient 'Branch and Straddle' algorithm is proposed to solve the LIP problem. The efficiency of this algorithm stems from the simultaneous handling of multiple variables, unlike in ordinary branch and bound algorithms. A numerical example is given to illustrate this algorithm.
