  • This paper deals with the anisotropy of the mushy region during solidification process of a binary mixture. A theoretical model which specifies a permeability tensor in terms of pricipal values is proposed. Also, the governing equations are modified into convenient forms for the numerical analysis with the existing algorithm. Some test computations are performed for soeidification of aqueous ammonium chloride solution contained in a square cavity. Results show that not only the present model is capable of resolving fundamental characteristics of the tranport phenomena, but also the anisotropy significantly affects the interdendritic flow structure, i.e., double-diffusive convection and macrosegregation patterns.

  • The study proposed the initial equilibrium state analysis method that considers axial deformation, in order to accurately determine the initial shape of a cable-stayed bridge. Sepecifically, the proposed method adopted the successive iteration method. In order to evaluate appropriate initial cable force introduced in the initial equilibrium state analysis, parametric studies were performed and a useful linear analysis method proposed. The geometrically nonlinear static behaviors of cable-stayed bridges were considered, using three-dimensional frame element and elastic catenary cable element. The usefulness and applicability of the analytic method proposed in this study were demonstrated using numerical examples, including a real cable-stayed bridge. The algorithm, is applicable in cases wherein axial deformation is not adopted in the fabrication camber, or final cable force is adjusted to eliminate construction and fabrication errors occurring during construction.

  • In general, various modeling and estimation techniques have been proposed to extract the tropospheric and ionospheric delays from the GPS CORS. In this study, Kalman filter approach is adopted to estimate the tropospheric and ionospheric delays and the proper modeling for the state vector and the variance-covariance matrix for the process noises are performed. The coordinates of reference stations and the zenith wet delays are estimated with the assumption of random walk stochastic process. Also, the first-order Gauss-Markov stochastic process is applied to compute the ionospheric effects. For the evaluation of the proposed modeling technique, Kalman filter algorithm is implemented and the numerical test is performed with the CORS data. The results show that the atmospheric effects can be estimated successfully and, as a consequence, can be used for the generation of VRS data.

  • Various algorithms and methods, related to preprocessing of LiDAR data, are being developed and proposed. These methods are two ways, one of them is to use the regular form such as DSM or the image converted from raw LiDAR data, and the other is to use raw LiDAR data directly. The image processing method is one of representative method for the regular grid form data. This method is easy to apply to a numerical analysis technique and has an advantage of modeling and noise elimination through smoothing, but it lose the information during the data conversion. This study apply the image processing method to the irregular raw LiDAR data directly for the extracting ground information with minimized information loss and evaluate the extracting accuracy of ground information.

  • This paper numerically examines, straight and twisted electrical heat trace installations for their anti-freezing effects on water inside a pipe. The unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled with an energy equation were solved to compare the two installation methods. The heat conduction of the pipe with a heat source interacts with the natural convection of the water, and the conjugate heat transfer was considered using a commercial code (ANSYS-FLUENT) based on a SIMPLE-type algorithm. Numerical experiments, were done to investigate the isotherms and the vector fields in the water region to extract the evolutions of the minimum and maximum temperatures of the water inside the pipe. There was no substantial difference in the anti-freezing effects between the straight and twisted. Therefore, the straight installation is recommended after considering the damage and short circuit behavior of the electrical heat trace.

  • A three-dimensional parallel Euler flow solver has been developed for the simulation of unsteady rotor-fuselage interaction aerodynamics on unstructured meshes. In order to handle the relative motion between the rotor and the fuselage, the flow field was divided into two zones, a moving zone rotating with the blades and a stationary zone containing the fuselage. A sliding mesh algorithm was developed for the convection of the flow variables across the cutting boundary between the two zones. A quasi-unsteady mesh adaptation technique was adopted to enhance the spatial accuracy of the solution and to better resolve the wake. A low Mach number pre-conditioning method was implemented to relieve the numerical difficulty associated with the low-speed forward flight. Validations were made by simulating the flows around the Georgia Tech configuration and the ROBIN fuselage. It was shown that the present method is efficient and robust for the prediction of complicated unsteady rotor-fuselage aerodynamic interaction phenomena.

  • The line-of-sight(LOS) rate is estimated using Kalman filter in Radio-Frequency(RF) seeker. For the two axis gimbaled seeker, proper system modeling is considered and the basic filter structure is set up. The main issue for Kalman filter is choosing the proper process and measurement noise. For the measurement process, the signal to noise ratio(SNR) and other components are introduced. To cope with the eclipse problem or other abnormal seeker status, the pseudo input signal concept is proposed. By conditioning abnormal signals, the LOS rate estimation performance is increased. The process noise is also an important factor in the propagation phase. The analytical approach on a process noise component is performed and a reliable region for the filter is calculated based on the eigenvalue analysis. Some numerical simulations are performed to check the validity of suggested algorithm.

  • In this study, the main focus is the simulation of acoustic wave scattering in trailing edge and the analysis of the generation mechanism of instability wave by the interaction of trailing edge, shear flow and initial disturbance. The numerical algorithm is based on CFD/CAA hybrid method with high-order computational aeroacoustic method. It is found that steady mean flow gradient terms play a crucial role on the generation of instability wave through the comparison of simulations of Simple Linearized Euler Equation and Full Linearized Euler Equation. Through the comparison with the results of Full Navier-Stokes Equation, it is reasonable and efficient to use the Full Linearized Euler Equation in the initial generation mechanism of the instability wave near the trailing edge.

  • Design optimization is a mathematical process to find an optimal solution through the use of formal optimization algorithms. Design plays a vital role in the engineering field; therefore, using design tools in education and research is becoming more and more important. Recently, numerical design optimization in fluid mechanics, which uses computational fluid dynamics (CFD), has numerous applications in the engineering field, because of the rapid development of high-performance computing resources. However, it is difficult to find design optimization software and contents for educational purposes in aerospace engineering. In the present study, we have developed an aerodynamic design framework specifically for an airfoil, based on the EDucation-research Integration through Simulation On the Net (EDISON) portal. The airfoil design framework is composed of three subparts: a geometry kernel, CFD flow analysis, and an optimization algorithm. Through a seamless interface among the subparts, an iterative design process is conducted. In addition, the CFD flow analysis and the design framework are provided through a web-based portal system, while the computation is taken care of by a supercomputing facility. In addition to the software development, educational contents are developed for lectures associated with design optimization in aerospace and mechanical engineering education programs. The software and content developed in this study is expected to be used as a tool for e-learning material, for education and research in universities.

  • In this paper, a multi-hop transmission protocol based on parallel communication of secondary users (SUs) is proposed. The primary multi-hop network coexists with a set of SUs by cooperative spectrum sharing. The main optimization target of our protocol is the overall performance of the secondary system with the guarantee of the primary outage performance. The energy consumption of the primary system is reduced by the cooperation of SUs. The aim of the primary source is to communicate with the primary destination via a number of primary relays. SUs may serve as extra decode-and-forward relays for the primary network. When an SU acts as a relay for a primary user (PU), some other SUs that satisfy the condition for parallel communication are selected to simultaneously access the primary spectrum for secondary transmissions. For the proposed protocol, two opportunistic routing strategies are proposed, and a search algorithm to select the SUs for parallel communication is described. The throughput of the SUs and the PU is illustrated. Numerical results demonstrate that the average throughput of the SUs is greatly improved, and the end-to-end throughput of the PU is slightly increased in the proposed protocol when there are more than seven SUs.
