  • The behaviour of alloys in the semi-solid state strongly depends on the imposed stress state and on the morphology of the phase which can vary from dendritic to globular. To optimal net shape forging of semi-solid materials, it is important to investigate for filling phenomena in forging process of arbitrarily shaped dies. To produce a automotive part which has good mechanical property, the filling pattern according to die velocity and solid fraction distribution has to be estimated for arbitrarily shaped dies. Therefore, the estimation of filling characteristic in the forging simulation with arbitrarily shaped dies of semi-solid materials are calculated by finite element method with proposed algorithm. The proposed theoretical model and a various boundary conditions for arbitrarily shaped dies is investigated with the coupling calculation between the liquid phase flow and the solid phase deformation. The simulation process with arbitrarily shaped dies is performed to the isothermal conditions of two dimensional problems. To analysis of forging process by using semi-solid materials, a new stress-strain relationship is described, and forging analysis is performed by viscoelastic model for the solid phase and the Darcy's law for the liquid flow. The calculated results for forging force and filling limitations will be compared to experimental data. The filling simulation of simple products performed with the uniform billet temperature(584$^{\circ}C$) from the induction heating by the commercial package MAGMAsoft. The initial step of computation is the touching of semi-solid material with the end of die gate and the initial concept of proposed system just fit with the capability of MAGMAsoft.

  • The advent of high resolution products of surface wind and temperature derived by satellite data has permitted us to investigate ocean and atmosphere interaction studies in detail. Especially the Kuroshio extension region of the western North Pacific is considered to be a key area for such studies. We have constructed gridded products of surface wind/wind stress over the world ocean using satellite scatterometer (Qscat/SeaWinds), available as the Japanese Ocean Flux data sets with Use of Remote sensing Observation (J-OFURO). Using new data based on improved algorithm which have been recently delivered, we are reconstructing gridded product with higher spatial resolution. Intercomparison of this product with the previous one reveals that there are some discrepancies between them in short-period and high wind-speed ranges especially in the westerly wind region. The products are validated by not only comparisons with in-situ measurement data by mooring buoys such as TAO/TRITON in the tropical Pacific and the Kuroshio Extension Observation (KEO) buoys, but also intercomparison with numerical weather prediction model (NWPM) products (the NRA-1 and 2). Our products have much smaller mean difference in the study areas than the NWPM ones, meaning higher reliability compared with the NWPM products. Using the high resolution products together with sea surface temperature (SST) data, we examine a new type of relationship between the lower atmosphere and upper ocean in the Kuroshio Extension region. It is suggested that the spatial relation between the wind speed and SST depends upon, more or less, the surrounding oceanic condition.

  • The underlying advantages of using thin-walled corrugatedwebs instead of plate girders with stiffeners are the elimination of instability problems associated with buckling of the thin-walled flat plate, and elimination of the need for transverse stiffeners, which alsoresults in economic advantages. This paper focuses on two aspects related to the structural design technique forsinusoidal corrugated web steel beams, and the optimum design of the beams using real-value genetic algorithms. The structural design process and design variables used in this optimization werecomposed with EN 1993-1-5, DASt-R015 standard and Pasternak et al. (2004), and the valid design capacity of shear buckling of the standards were compared. For the optimum structural design, the objective function, presented as the fullweight of the sinusoidal corrugated web beams, and the slenderness, member forces, and maximum deflection of the beam, were considered constraints. Finally, the simple beam under the uniform load was adopted as a numerical example, and the effective probability parameters of the genetic operators were considered to find the global minimum point.

  • The safety of on-going ships is one of important concerns in the view of environment and human life. The ship in bad condition is likely to be subjected to accidental loads such as collision. Once she has one or several minor collision damages in the form of circle or ellipse, her ultimate strength under compression or tension load will be reduced. Here, it is important to evaluate the reduction ratio of ultimate strength due to the damage from safety point of view. The problem of strength reduction of a plate with cutout such as opening hole has been treated by many researchers. As a result, a closed-form formula on the reduction of ultimate strength of a plate considering the effect of several forms of cutout was suggested. However, the structure of ships is composed of a plate and a stiffener so-called a stiffened plate, and it is likely to be damaged at a plate and stiffeners together in collision. This paper is to investigate the effect of minor collision damage on ultimate strength of a stiffened plate by using numerical analysis. For this study, the shape of minor collision damage of a stiffened plate was made by using contact algorithm. The deformed shape was used as an initial shape for ultimate stress analysis. Then, a series of nonlinear FE analysis was conducted to investigate the reduction effects of ultimate strength of the stiffened plate. The boundary condition was applied as simply supported at all boundaries, and the tripping of stiffener among failure mode under compression loading was neglected. These results were settled in the form of reduction ratio between ultimate of original intact stiffened plate and that of damaged stiffened plate.

  • The online learning is a process of obtaining the solution for a given objective function where the data is accumulated in real time or in batch units. The stochastic gradient descent method is one of the most widely used for the online learning. This method is not only easy to implement, but also has good properties of the solution under the assumption that the generating model of data is homogeneous. However, the stochastic gradient method could severely mislead the online-learning when the homogeneity is actually violated. We assume that there are two heterogeneous generating models in the observation, and propose the a new stochastic gradient method that mitigate the problem of the heterogeneous models. We introduce a robust mini-batch optimization method using statistical tests and investigate the convergence radius of the solution in the proposed method. Moreover, the theoretical results are confirmed by the numerical simulations.

  • In this paper, we propose spatially adaptive color demosaicing of noisy Bayer data. When sensor noises are not considered in demosaicing, they may degrade result image. In order to obtain high resolution image, sensor noises are considered in the color demosaicing step. We identify flat, edge and pattern regions at each pixel location to improve the performance of the algorithm and to reduce complexity. Based on the pre-classified regions, the demosaicing of the G channel is performed using the local statistics to reduce the interpolation error. The sensor noise is simultaneously removed by a modified version of non-local mean filter in the green and in the color difference domain. The R and B channels are interpolated easily using fully interpolated and denoised G and color difference values. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves a significant improvement in terms of visual and numerical criteria, when compared to conventional methods.

  • In this paper, the performance of the optical code-division multiple access (OCDMA) technology on a plastic optical fiber (POF) access network, which had received much attention due to its low weight, large core diameter, flexibility, easy installation, and especially its high bandwidth, is analyzed. Recently, POF was a very attractive candidate for transmission media in an access network based on OCDMA technology. But the conventional OCDMA system only allows finite units to transmit and access simultaneously according to the number of channels which are restricted by BER, and so, in this paper, to resolve this problem a novel multi-priority reservation protocol is also proposed. By using this reservation scheme and a distributed arbitration algorithm, channel collision and destination conflict could be avoided. And this protocol can efficiently support the transmission of multimedia messages that require the different time-delay. The network throughput and average delay using various system parameters have been investigated by numerical analysis and simulation experiments. These results shows that the multi-priority reservation protocol in this POF access network based on OCDMA technology is valid and efficient.

  • This study deals with new application method of the connecting tuned mass damper (CTMD) system for efficient vibration control of adjacent twin structures which have the same dynamic properties such as natural frequency and damping characteristics to each other. In the existing research, the vibration control of the twin structures has a limit to the application of the conventional damper-connection method of the twin structures. Due to the same frequency characteristics leading to the equally vibrating behaviors, it is impossible to apply the conventional connection method of the adjacent structures. In order to overcome these limitations induced by the symmetry of the dynamic characteristics, we propose a new CTMD-based control system that adopts the conventional connection configuration but unbalances the symmetric system by arranging the control device asymmetrically and then can finally achieve the efficient control performance. In order to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed system, numerical simulations of the optimally designed proposed system have been performed in comparison with the optimal design results of the existing independent single tuned mass damper (STMD) control system and the another optimal control system previously proposed by the same author, hereafter called CTMD-OsTMD. The comparative results of the control performances among STMD, CTMD-OsTMD and the proposed CTMD systems verified that the newly proposed control system can be a control-efficient and cost-effective system for vibration suppression of the two adjacent twin structures.

  • In this work, a method of size optimization is proposed to maximize the natural frequency of a rod that consists of a hidden shape in one part and an exposed shape in the other. The frequency response function of a rod composed of two parts is predicted by using the frequency response functions of each of the parts instead of the shapes of the parts. The mass and stiffness matrices of the rod are obtained by using the mass and stiffness matrices of the equivalent vibration systems, which are obtained by applying the experimental modal analysis method to the frequency response functions of the parts. Through several numerical examples, the frequency response function obtained by using the proposed method is compared with that of a rod to validate the prediction method based on equivalent vibration systems. A size optimization problem is formulated for maximizing the first natural frequency of a combined rod, which is replaced with an equivalent vibration system, and a rod structure is optimized by using an optimization algorithm.

  • Probabilistic methods are used in engineering where a computational model contains random variables. The proposed method under development: Direct Optimized Probabilistic Calculation (DOProC) is highly efficient in terms of computation time and solution accuracy and is mostly faster than in case of other standard probabilistic methods. The novelty of the DOProC lies in an optimized numerical integration that easily handles both correlated and statistically independent random variables and does not require any simulation or approximation technique. DOProC is demonstrated by a collection of deliberately selected simple examples (i) to illustrate the efficiency of individual optimization levels and (ii) to verify it against other highly regarded probabilistic methods (e.g., Monte Carlo). Efficiency and other benefits of the proposed method are grounded on a comparative case study carried out using both the DOProC and MC techniques. The algorithm has been implemented in mentioned software applications, and has been used effectively several times in solving probabilistic tasks and in probabilistic reliability assessment of structures. The article summarizes the principles of this method and demonstrates its basic possibilities on simple examples. The paper presents unpublished details of probabilistic computations based on this method, including a reliability assessment, which provides the user with the probability of failure affected by statistically dependent input random variables. The study also mentions the potential of the optimization procedures under development, including an analysis of their effectiveness on the example of the reliability assessment of a slender column.
