  • A π-shaped composite deck in the form of an open section is a type of blunt body that is highly susceptible to wind loads. To investigate its vortex-induced vibration (VIV) performance, a large-scale (1/20) section model of a cable-stayed bridge with a main span of 650 m was tested in a wind tunnel. The vibration suppression mechanism of the countermeasures was analyzed using computational fluid dynamic. Experimental results demonstrate that the vertical and torsional VIVs of the original section can be suppressed by combining guide plates with a tilt angle of 35° and bottom central stabilizing plates as aerodynamic countermeasures. Numerical results indicate that the large-scale vortex under the deck separates into smaller vortices, resulting in the disappearance of the von Kármán vortex street in the wake zone because the countermeasures effectively suppress the VIVs. Furthermore, a full-bridge aeroelastic model with a scale of 1/100 was constructed and tested to evaluate the wind resistance performance and validate the effectiveness of the proposed countermeasures.

  • To investigate the aerodynamic characteristics of the on a road vehicle, experimenrs were performed at an Atmospheric Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel. The scaled model of an automobile with 1 : 3 scaling ratio was used. The Reynolds number based on the free stream velocity and model length was $7.93{\times}10^5$. The influence of crosswind to the stability of automobile was investigated by the pressure distribution measurements and flow visualization studies. with the variation of the angle of attack, the change in pressure coefficient depends highly on the flow separation regimes. The experimental and numerical results are compared and found to be in good agreements.

  • One of the devices to prevent separated flow over a wing or a flap at high angle of attack is a vortex generator. In the present work, we numerically study the flow around a low-profile or micro vortex generator whose height is less than local boundary layer thickness which can delay separation with a minimum drag penalty owing to its very small wetted surface area. As a first step toward a parametric study to efficiently design this MVG flow control system, we simulate the flow around a single MVG on a flat plate. For the simulation, we employ OpenFOAM with Launder-Sharma ${\kappa}$-epsilon model. The analysis results are validated by comparing with experimental results of a rectangular MVG at an angle of attack of 10 degrees whose height is 20% of local boundary layer. Important results and aspects of this numerical study are discussed. We also simulate the flow around rectangular, triangular and trapezoidal MVGs and the results are compared

  • Numerical calculation of the flow field past a passenger car was carried out by using a panel method with a small computer of 5Mbyte memory size. The shape of car body was simplified and reconstructed by 2180 panels on which a constant strength sink (or source) was distributed. The separation of flow from the surface and the wake flow were not considered in the calculation because of the computer memory limitation. All of the results of calculation were presented by using a 3-dimensional computer graphics. In spite of small memory size of computer, generally good agreements were obtained, except the separated region, from the comparison of pressure distribution between numerical analysis and wind tunnel experiment with 1/5 scaled model.

  • Numerical and experimental studies are performed to investigate the effect of the underbody shape of the simplified road vehicle on drag and life. Four different vehicle models with front and rear slanted variations at the lower surface are used in this study. Cases with a slanted underbody surface at front have smaller drag than those without a slanted surface. Also, cases with a slanted underbody surface at rear have smaller lift than those without a slanted surface. Pressure distributions along the model surfaces and velocity fields at the wake region are examined in detail. In general, numerical solutions are in agreement with experimental results.

  • In this study. a numerical analysis has been performed for the turbulent flow around a 15,000TEU twin-skeg container ship using a commercial CFD code. FLUENT. The computed results have been compared with the model test data from MOERI. We investigated viscous resistance coefficient. wake distribution and characteristics of the shear flow according to the grid numbers. Although the free surface is approximated by the plane of symmetry in this work. the calculated axial velocity and transverse vector show a good agreement with the MOERI experimental data except for the region of 0.9 level of axial velocity at the propeller plane. The numerical analysis show that commercial CFD code is useful tool for the evaluation of complex hull form with twin-skegs.

  • In this paper a Vortex Lattice Method is used to predict the performances of a contra-Rotating Propeller. Greeley and Kerwin's(1982) wake model is adopted instead of the exact trailing vortex geometry. The interaction of the two propellers is treated by the sense that the induction of one propeller upon the other propeller is averaged in the circumferential direction . Two single propellers (DTRC 4119 & DTRC 4842) are chosen and compared with the experimental and other numerical results published. Then the computational results for three CRP's (4-0-4 CRP(DTRC 3686+DTRC 3687A) 4-0-5 CRP(DTRC 3686+DTRC 3849) & DTRC CRT(DTRC 5067+DTRC 5068) are compared with the experimental and numerical results published. The interaction of both propellers by the change of inflow velocity and circulation of each propeller is investigated.

  • In this study, the turbulent free surface around KVLCC1 employed in the circular motion test simulation is numerically calculated using a commercial CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) code, FLUENT. Also, hydrodynamic forces and yaw moments around a ship model are calculated during the steady turning. Numerical simulations of the turbulent flows with free surface around KVLCC1 have been carried out by use of RANS equation based on calculation of hydrodynamic forces and yaw moments exerted upon the ship hull. Wave elevation is simulated by using the VOF method. VOF method is known as one of the most effective numerical techniques handling two-fluid domains of different density simultaneously. Boundary layer thickness and wake field are changed various yaw velocities of ship model during the steady turning. The calculated hydrodynamic forces are compared with those obtained by model tests.

  • The finite volume based multi-block RANS code, WAVIS developed at MOERI is applied to the numerical self-propulsion test. WAVIS uses the cell-centered finite volume method for discretization of the governing equations. The realizable $k-{\epsilon}$ turbulence model with a wall function is employed for the turbulence closure. The free surface is captured with the two-phase level set method and body forces are used to model the effects of a propeller without resolving the detail blade flow. The propeller forces are obtained using an unsteady lifting surface method based on potential flow theory. The numerical procedure followed the self-propulsion model experiment based on the 1978 ITTC performance prediction method. The self-propulsion point is obtained iteratively through balancing the propeller thrust, the ship hull resistance and towing force that is correction for Reynolds number difference between the model and full scale. The unsteady lifting surface code is also iterated until the propeller induced velocity is converged in order to obtain the propeller force. The self-propulsion characteristics such as thrust deduction, wake fraction, propeller efficiency, and hull efficiency are compared with the experimental data of the practical container ship. The present paper shows that hybrid RANS and potential flow based numerical method is promising to predict the self-propulsion parameters of practical ships as a useful tool for the hull form and propeller design.

  • The effects of the combination of blade number for forward and after propeller on the propeller shaft forces of a contra-rotating propeller (CRP) system are presented in the paper. The research is performed through the numerical simulations based on the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations (RANS). The simulation results of the present method in open water condition are validated comparing with the experimental data as well as the other numerical simulation results based on the potential method for 4-0-4 CRP (3686+3687A) and 4-0-5 CRP (3686+3849) of DTNSRDC. Two sets of CRP are designed and simulated to study the effect of the combination of blade number in behind-hull condition. One set consists of 3-blade and 4-blade, while the other is 4-blade and 4-blade. A full hull body submerged under the free surface is modeled in the computational domain to simulate directly the wake field of the ship at the propeller plane. From the simulation results, the fluctuations of axial force and moment are dominant in the case of same blade numbers for forward and after propellers, whereas the fluctuations of horizontal and vertical forces and moments are very large in the case of different blade numbers.
