  • Many efforts will have to be made on securing the stable supply of the energy due to the worldwide trend of controlling the utilization fossil fuels inducing global climate change. Renewable portfolio standard enforced to power companies over 500 MW capacity from 2012. Tidal current energy is one of the most interesting renewable and clean energy resources that have been less exploited. Especially, Korea has worldwide outstanding tidal current energy resources and it is highly required to develop a tidal current energy conversion system(TECS) in coastal region. So, we examine a tidal in-stream energy using a numerical model and estimate a tidal current potential for commercialization of tidal current power plant in the sea of the Bunamgun-do. Available tidal energy resources is also analytically estimated using a tidal farm method and the annual energy production of an optimal TECS arrays will be calculated with taking into account interference of lateral and longitudinal spacing.

  • The effect of critical minimum depth in the coastal region on storm surges was examined using a three-dimensional primitive equation model (POM). Case studies using numerical experiments in a small coastal bay in the southern sea of Korea (Hanam Bay) have examined the 'critical depth' (CD) that stabilizes the numerical calculations. Dependence of the CD of typhoon tracks and tidal components such as M2, S2, O1, and K1 were examined. The model results clearly demonstrated that the numerically unstable state of the calculation was caused by the coarse resolution of sea surface elevation.

  • A two-dimensional numerical model. using finite element method. was applied to calculation of the tides and tidal currents of four major tidal constituents($M_2, ;S_2, ;K_1, ;O_1$) in the southern part of the East Sea. The model results were compared with the observed data and with the existing tidal charts. and the computed results showed good agreement with the observation. As a result, the detailed tidal charts for four major tidal constituents and the tidal current ellipses of the M$_2$and $K_1$tides were produced respectively. The results indicate that the amphidromic point of diurnal tide locates near Korean coastal lines closer than that of the chart drawn by Nishida(1980).

  • To arrange effectively artificial reefs for marine afforestation, tidal currents were analyzed by numerical experiments. The numerical experiments were carried out by EFDC(Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code), and water column was vertically divided 5 layers. Tidal current patterns showed to be affected by main current at outside of study area, and circle currents of two were observed from analysis of residual currents. The calculated harmonic constants of tide and tidal current agreed well with those of observations at two stations for tide and two stations for tidal current. The model successfully reproduced the tidal current around the Geomoondo marine afforestation. It suggest that artificial reefs for marine afforestation should be installed belt zone at study area.

  • A new moving boundary technique for leap-frog finite difference numerical mode is proposed for the resonable simulation of coastal inundation over discontinuous topography. The new scheme improves the moving boundary technique developed by Imamura(1996). The present scheme is tested using the analytical solution of Thacker(1981) for the case of free oscillation with moving boundary in a parabolic bowl. Finally, a numerical simulation is conducted for the flooding over a tidal barrier constructed on a simple concave geometry. A general feature of inundation over a discontinuous topography is well described by the numerical model.

  • A two-dimensional numerical tidal model is formulated to reproduce tides in the Southwestern Sea of Korea. Tidal charts and ellipses of eight major tidal constituents (M$_2$, S$_2$, K$_1$, O$_1$, N$_2$, K$_2$, P$_1$, Q$_1$) are presented. Model results show that the semi-diurnal tides are dominant in this area. Maximum transport by tides in the Cheju Strait is about 4.2${\times}$10$\^$6/ ㎥/sec which is greater by eight times than that by residual current.

  • Tidal propagation in the Keum River has been routinely handled by numerical integration of the long fravity wave equation by Dronkers. The dynamic equations include non-linear terms thereby reproducing the shallow water tides. The model was used to compute tidal distribution of the Kum River for aveage spring, mean, neap tidal conditions and further utilised to investigate the waterlevel response within tidal reaches by combined tide and flood discharge effects. The objective of this initial study is to investigate the tidal dynamics of the lower reaches of the Keum River under the condition of before-cross-channel barrage construction.

  • A mathematical model has been developed to evaluate the capability of sea water exchanges under tidal and diffusive environments and has been verified through comparison with numerical experiments. From the mathematical analysis, this study presents the rates of sea water exchanges due to the tidal inflow and diffusion process. The port characteristic length $L_p$ is the most significant evaluation index.

  • Interest in the development of renewable energy sources has been increasing over the past 10 years and the west coast of Korea is one of the most favorable regions for tidal power. Barrage type tidal power is representative of the experience of installation and operation of such power sources for long periods. However, future projects for barrage type energy sources are either delayed or closed due to their environmental impact. For this reason, we applied a new tidal power technology with minimized environmental impact to a candidate area in the west coast and then analyzed its feasibility. The new tidal power technology is called Dynamic Tidal Power (DTP). Because its verification is impossible both in the laboratory and field, a numerical model is used for the evaluation of DTP. This new technology produces tidal power by means of the phase difference caused by diffraction on both sides of a dike built tens of km away from the coast. Because DTP is theoretically able to almost double the tidal range, it is expected to be applicable to even a small tidal area. Unlike the barrage type, it has the advantage of reducing the environmental impact by not enclosing the sea water. The west coast of Korea is close to the metropolitan area and has a high tidal range and, thus, it is thought to be a suitable candidate for tidal power.

  • This paper constructed the 3D real-time numerical model for which predicts the water quality and movement characteristics of the inner bay, which consider the characteristics of the wind-driven current and density current in estuaries which generated by the river discharge from the Hyeong-san river and oceanic water of the Eastern sea. The constructed numerical model reappeared successfully the seawater circulation current of Yeong-il Bay, which used the input conditions of the real-time tidal current, river discharge and weather conditions at March of 2001 year. Also to observe the wind-driven current and density current in estuaries effected to the seawater circulation pattern of the inner bay, we investigated the analyzation for the each impact factors and the relationship with the water quality of Yeong-il bay
