  • This paper presents annual energy production (AEP) by a 1.5kW wind turbine due to be installed in Deokjeok-Do island. Local wind data is determined by geometric shape of Deokjeok-Do island and annual wind data from Korea Institute of Energy Research at three places considered to be installed the wind turbine. Numerical simulation using WindSim is performed to obtain flow pattern for the whole island. The length of each computation grid is 40 m, and k-e turbulence model is imposed. AEP is determined by the power curve of the wind turbine and the local wind data obtained from numerical simulation. To capture the more detailed flow pattern at the specific local region, Urumsil-maul inside the island, fine mesh having the grid length of 10m is evaluated. It is noted that the input data for numerical simulation to the local region is used the wind data obtained by the numerical results for the whole island. From the numerical analysis, it is found that a local AEP at the Urumsil-maul has almost same value of 1.72 MWh regardless the grid resolutions used in the present calculation. It is noted that relatively fine mesh used for local region is effective to understand the flow pattern clearly.

  • In this study, the stability of the room-and-pillar underground method was investigated using numerical analysis method. In-situ geotechnical investigation was conducted, and a supporting pattern was selected based on the geotechnical investigation data. For the supporting pattern, Type-1, 2, 3 were selected for each ground condition. A 3D numerical analysis model was developed for effective simulation as the room-and-pillar underground method consist of a pillar and room. As a review of numerical analysis, it was confirmed that the crown settlement, convergence, shotcrete and rock bolt were all stable in all supporting patterns. As a result of the analysis by the construction stage, it was confirmed that excessive stress was generated in the room when the construction stage of forming pillar. So, precise construction is required during the actual construction stage of the pillar formation.

  • In this paper, both experimental measurement and theoretical analysis are used to investigate the out-of-plane resonant characteristics of a cantilevered piezoceramic plate in air and three different kinds of fluid. The experimental method, amplitude-fluctuation electronic speckle pattern interferometry (AF-ESPI), is the major technique used in this study to measure the resonant characteristics of the cantilivered piezoceramic plate. Both resonant frequencies and full-field mode shapes are obtained from this experimental technique. Numerical computations based on the finite element analysis are presented for comparison with the experimental results. Good quality of mode shapes for the cantilevered piezoceramic plate in air is obtained from the AF-ESPI technique. However, the quality decreases as the viscosity of fluids increases. From the results provided from experimental measurements and numerical computations, it is indicated that the resonant frequencies of the cantilevered piezoceramic plate in fluid decrease with the increase of the viscosity of fluids. Good agreements between the experimental measured data and the numerical calculated results are found for both resonant frequencies and mode shapes of the cantilevered piezoceramic plate in fluid.

  • Numerical analysis for the combustion flow in the combustion chamber of incineration system has been carried out in order to acquire the basic design capability of incineration system. Established mathematical model was applied to the performance prediction of the pre-designed combustion chamber of commercial plant. Especially, combustion characteristics and the variation of flow pattern have been deeply discussed in accordance with secondary air injection. Secondary air injection was effective for the turbulent mixing between air and carbon monoxide/volatile matter resulting in considerably reduced CO content at the exit. Secondary air injection was found to be one of the key design parameters because the size of recirculation zone could be changed with the variation of injection characteristics.

  • The unsteady, two-dimensional laminar flow and heat transfer of an incompressible, constant-property fluid flowing around a circular cylinder are numerically analyzed. The Navier-Strokes equation and the energy equation are solved by the finite difference method. The range of the Reynolds number is 10 to 100 and the Prandtl number considered is 0.7. The contours of the flow pattern, equi-vorticity line and isotherm pattern around a circular cylinder are shown. Also, numerical solutions of the surface vorticity, pressure coefficient, drag coefficient, local Nusselt number and mean Nusselt number are obtained. The numerical results for the final time fo calculation are compared with the other available experimental and theoretical results for the steady state and are found to be in good agreement with them.

  • A numerical experiment on the effective discharge of waste materials caused in recirculating aquaculture basins was performed. The numerical model used in this study was a 4-level hydrodynamic and advection-diffusion model. Flow structures and settling processes of ss in the various mathematical model basins are discussed. The calculated flow fields of the numerical basin corresponded well with the measured velocity in field basin. In the cases of steep bottom slopes in 4/30, the non-dimensional tractive force($U{\ast}/U{\ast}_c$) which is all important parameter for the deposition pattern of waste materials was stronger than with the mild slope one. The settling pattern of ss depended considerably on the degree of bottom slope of basin. To concentrate deposited waste materials into the center discharge pipe, it is useful to design a cylindrical basin with a steeply conical bottom. In addition, to prevent movement of the deposit area away from the center, it is necessary to locate the circulating ducts at diametrically opposed points on the basin sides.

  • A two-dimensional particle flow cod (PFC) is used to study the effect of missile impact on the concrete target. For this purpose firstly calibration of numerical model was performed so that tensile strength of numerical models and experimental sample were the same. Secondly, a concrete model was built. The number of concrete layers and the angle of concrete layers related to horizontal axis were changed. Their numbers were 1, 2, 3 and 4. The angles were 0°, 15°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 75° and 90°. A semi-circle missile was simulated at top of the concrete layers. Its velocity in opposite side of Y direction was 100 m/s. three measuring circles were situated at the below the missile in the model to receive the applied force. The load in the missile and measuring circles together with failure pattern were registered at the beginning of the impaction. The results show that concrete layers number and concrete layers angle have important effect on the failure load while the failure pattern was nearly constant in all of the models.

  • When choosing the support pattern of tunnel, the characteristics of rock are identified from the result of the surface geologic survey, boring, and geophysical prospecting and laboratory test. And a rock mass rating is classified and excavation method and standard support pattern are designed considering rock classification, domestic and international construction practices, numerical analysis. According to the revised design standard for tunnel, it was recommended to classify the rock mass rating for the design of tunnel into a rating based on RMR. If necessary, it proposed a flexible standard allowed applying more atomized the rock mass rating and Q-System. Also, the resonable verification of the support pattern must be accompanied because the factors affecting the structure and behavior of ground during the construction of tunnel are the main factors of uncertainty factors such as the nature of ground, ground water and the characteristics of structural materials. These days, such verification method is getting more specialized and diversified. In this study, the empirical method, numerical analysis and comparative analysis of in situ measurements were used to prove the reasonableness in the support pattern by RMR and Q-value on the Imha Dam emergency spillway.

  • The filling pattern and an adaptive grid refinement based on the finite element method and Eulerian mesh advancement approach have been developed to analyze incompressible transient viscous flow with free surfaces. The governing equation for flow analysis is Navier-Stokes equation including inertia and gravity effects. The mixed FE formulation and predictor-corrector method are used effectively for unsteady numerical simulation. The flow front surface and the volume inflow rate are calculated using the filling pattern technique to select an adequate pattern among four filling patterns at each triangular control volume. By adaptive grid refinement, the new flow field that renders better prediction in flow surface shape is generated and the velocity field at the flow front part is calculated more exactly. In this domain the elements in the surface region are made finer than those in the remaining regions for more efficient computation. Using the proposed numerical technique, the collapse of a water dam has been analyzed to predict flow phenomenon of fluid and the predicted front positions with respect to time have been compared with the reported experimental results.
