A Study on Development of Median Encroachment Accident Model (중앙선침범사고 예측모델의 개발에 관한 연구)

  • The median encroachment accident model proposed in this paper is the first step to develop cost-effective criteria about installing facilities preventing traffic accidents by median encroachment. This model consists of expected annual number of median encroachment on roadway and conditional probability to collide with vehicles on opposite lane after encroachment. Expected encroachment number is related to traffic volume and quote from a study of Hutchinson & Kennedy(1966). The probability of vehicle collision is composed of assumed headway distribution of opposite directional vehicles (negative exponential distribution), driving time of encroaching vehicle and Gap & Gap acceptance model. By using expected accident number yielded from the presented model, it will be able to calculate the benefit of reduced accident and to analyze the cost of installing facilities. Therefore this will help develop cost-effective criteria of what, to install in the median.

Characteristics and Models of the Side-swipe Accident in the Case of Cheongju 4-legged Signalized Intersections (4지 신호교차로의 측면접촉사고 특성 및 사고모형 - 청주시를 사례로 -)

  • This study deals with the side-swipe accidents of 4-legged signalized intersections in Cheongju. The objectives are to analyze the characteristics of the accidents and to develop the related models. In pursuing the above, this study gives particular emphasis to finding the appropriate methodology to modelling. The main results are as follows. First, injuries were analyzed to be twice than property-only accidents in the side-swipe accidents. The accidents were evaluated to occur more in inside-intersection. Also, the accidents were analyzed to be almost the auto-related accidents and to be occurred by the unsafely-driving activity. Second, multiple linear regression models were evaluated to be more statistically significant than multiple non-linear. The most fitted models were analyzed to be the models with the number of accidents as the dependent variable. The factors of side-swipe accidents analyzed in this study were ADT, area of intersection, right-turn-only-lane, number of pedestrian crossings, limited speed of main road, maximum grade and number of signal phase.

Accident Models of Circular Intersections by Type in Korea (사고유형에 따른 원형교차로 사고모형)

  • This study deals with the traffic accidents by type. The objectives are to analyze the characteristics of 2 accident types, and to develop the models by type. In pursuing the above, this paper gives particular attentions to testing the differences between by type two groups, and developing the models (Poisson and negative binomial regressions) using the data of domestic circular intersections. The main results are as follows. First, the number of accidents in vehicle vehicle was analyzed to account for about 73.41% of total and to be higher than vehicle people. Second, two Poisson models and two negative binomial models which were all statistically significant were developed using vehicle people accidents and vehicle vehicle accidents as dependant variables. Finally, the traffic volume as common variable was selected in the models, and right-turn slip lane, speed hump, the number of driveways, the number of pedestrian crossings as specific variables of the models were selected.

Mitigation of Insufficient Capacity Problems of Central Bus Stops by Controlling Effective Green Time (유효녹색시간 조정을 활용한 중앙버스정류장 용량 부족 완화 방안 연구)

  • After the introduction of the central bus lane system, bus traffic was prioritized. This resulted in improved trust from bus users. However, the low capacity at the central bus stop reduces traffic speed and punctuality. In addition, physical constraints are inevitable because the construction of central bus lanes and bus stops considers the city's road geometry. Therefore, this study attempted to optimize the effective green time of the traffic signal system at the entrance and exit of the central bus stop to remedy its insufficient operational capacity. The Transit Capacity and Quality of Service Manual and Korea Highway Capacity Manual were used as the analysis methodologies. The number of stop areas for central bus stops to be built was determined by excluding variable physical factors, and field survey data collected from nine randomly selected central bus stops currently installed in Seoul were used. A scenario analysis was conducted on the central bus stops with insufficient capacity by adjusting the effective green time, and the capacity of the central bus stop was set as the dependent variable. According to the results, 26.7 percent of the central bus stops with insufficient capacity can solve the problem of insufficient capacity. Therefore, the results of this study can be verified by improving the operation level, and it can be effective even if the number of central bus stops calculated by engineering is not guaranteed during the planning stage of the central bus stop. As the number of central bus stops is expected to increase further as the number of central bus stops increases, it is necessary to improve the number of central bus stops. Therefore, it is hoped that the results presented in this study will be used as basic data for the improvement plan at the operational level before introducing the physical improvement plan.

Traffic-induced vibrations at the wet joint during the widening of concrete bridges and non-interruption traffic control strategies

  • The rapid development of road transport has increased the number of bridges that require widening. A critical issue in the construction of bridge widening is the influence of vibrations of the old bridge on the casting of wet joint concrete between the old and new bridges owing to the running traffic. Typically, the bridge is closed to traffic during the pouring of wet joint concrete, which negatively affects the existing transportation network. In this study, a newly developed microscopic traffic load modeling approach and the vehicle-bridge interaction theory are incorporated to develop a refined numerical framework for the analysis of random traffic-bridge coupled dynamics. This framework was used to investigate traffic-induced vibrations at the wet joint of a widened bridge. Based on an experimental study on the vibration resistance of wet joint concrete, traffic control strategies were proposed to ensure the construction performance of cast-in-site wet joint concrete under random traffic without interruption. The results show that the vibration displacement and frequency of the old bridge, estimated by the proposed framework, were comparable with those obtained from field measurements. Based on the target peak particle velocity and vibration amplitude of the wet joint concrete, it was found that traffic control measures, such as limiting vehicle gross weight and limiting traffic volume by closing an additional traffic lane, could ensure the construction performance of the wet joint concrete.

Accident Models of Rotary by Age Group in Korea (국내 로터리의 연령대별 사고모형)

  • PURPOSES : This study deals with the traffic accidents of rotary in Korea. The objective of this study is to develop the accident models by age group based on the various data of rotaries. METHODS : In pursuing the above, this study gives particular attentions to classifying the accident data of 17 rotaries by age, collecting the data of geometric structure, traffic volume and others, and developing the models using SPSS 17.0 and EXCEL. RESULTS : First, 3 multiple linear regression models which were all statistically significant were developed. The value of model of under 30-49 age group were, however, evaluated to be 0.688 and be less than those of other models. Second, the most powerful variables were analyzed to be traffic volume in the model of under 30 age group, circulatory roadway width in the model of 30-49 age group, and the number of approach lane in the model of above 50 age group. Finally, the test results of accident models using RMSE were all evaluated to be fitted to the given data. CONCLUSIONS : This study propose install streetlights, speed humps and widen Circulatory as effective improvements for reduction of accident in rotary.

Traffic Generation and Animation for Road Information System

  • This paper presents an algorithm for visualizing the traffic condition. The load of each road is updated using the incoming data collected by the devices placed at specific road crossings and junctions. The data includes the road occupancy, average speed, and vehicle types. They are analyzed to produce the 3D animation sequence of the traffic in real-time. This visualization maximizes the value of the collected data by aiding the end-users to grasp the current road situation intuitively. The traffic of a particular lane are based on the actual number of vehicles of that type passed during the last 5 minutes. This system was used in the Ministry of Construction and Public Transportation to visualize the Korean roads during the holidays around the lunar new year of 1997.

Rapid Quantification of Salmonella in Seafood Using Real-Time PCR Assay

  • A quantitative detection method for Salmonella in seafood was developed using a SYBR Green-based real-time PCR assay. The assay was developed using pure Salmonella DNA at different dilution levels [i.e., 1,000 to 2 genome equivalents (GE)]. The sensitivity of the real-time assay for Salmonella in seeded seafood samples was determined, and the minimum detection level was 20 CFU/g, whereas a detection level of 2 CFU/ml was obtained for pure culture in water with an efficiency of ${\geq}85%$. The real-time assay was evaluated in repeated experiments with seeded seafood samples and the regression coefficient ($R^2$) values were calculated. The performance of the real-time assay was further assessed with naturally contaminated seafood samples, where 4 out of 9 seafood samples tested positive for Salmonella and harbored cells <100 GE/g, which were not detected by direct plating on Salmonella Chromagar media. Thus, the method developed here will be useful for the rapid quantification of Salmonella in seafood, as the assay can be completed within 2-3 h. In addition, with the ability to detect a low number of Salmonella cells in seafood, this proposed method can be used to generate quantitative data on Salmonella in seafood, facilitating the implementation of control measures for Salmonella contamination in seafood at harvest and post-harvest levels.

Development of Gap Acceptance Models for Permitted Left Turn Intersections (비보호좌회전에서의 간격수락 행태모형 개발)

  • PURPOSES : Permitted left turn is a turning maneuver in which a vehicle turns left using a gap between oncoming vehicles, called gap acceptance, and it enables for more efficient traffic operation at intersections. In Korea, the permitted left turn has not been a common maneuver at signalized or un-signalized intersections. However, many experts and the Police Agency tried to apply this effective turning maneuver at intersections in Korea since 2010. Though the investigation of gap acceptance is significantly important in understanding a driver's behavior at intersections, there have not been many studies about this topic, specifically a study to develop probability models of gap acceptance behavior. METHODS : In this study, the probability model of gap acceptance behavior for a permitted left turn was developed based on observational field studies. To develop the model, seven variables were analyzed including gap, waiting time, traffic volume, conflict-flow vehicle type, left-turning vehicle type, the number of lane, and time. RESULTS : In the final model, gap and left-turning vehicle type were found to be significant influencing factors. CONCLUSIONS : Through this model development, it was concluded that as the gap size increased, the probability of gap acceptance was higher. Moreover, when a left-turning vehicle was a passenger car, the probability of gap acceptance was higher than compared to large size buses or freight cars.

  • This thesis is intended to design multi thread mobile GPGPU optimized in mobile environment, and to verify an effective thread management method of the multi thread mobile processor. In thread management, there is no management hardware and implement with software instructions. For the verification of the multi thread management method, Lane detection algorithm was implemented to compare nVidia's CUDA Architecture and the designed GPGPU in terms of thread management efficiency. The number of thread is normalized to 48 threads. An implemented Land Detection Algorithm is composed of Gaussian filter algorithm and Sobel Edge Detection algorithm. As a result, the designed GPGPU's thread efficiency is up to 2 times higher than CUDA's thread efficiency.
