In this study, the nucleate pool boiling heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) and critical heat flux (CHF) for a smooth and square flat heater in a pool of pure water with and without carbon nanotubes (CNTs) dispersed at $60^{\circ}C$ were measured. Tested aqueous nanofluids were prepared using CNTs with volume concentrations of 0.0001%, 0.001%, and 0.01%. The CNTs were dispersed by chemically treating them with an acid in the absence of any polymers. The results showed that the pool boiling HTCs of the nanofluids are higher than those of pure water in the entire nucleate boiling regime. The acid-treated CNTs led to the deposition of a small amount of CNTs on the surface, and the CNTs themselves acted as heat-transfer-enhancing particles, owing to their very high thermal conductivity. There was a significant increase in the CHF- up to 150%-when compared to that of pure water containing CNTs with a volume concentration of 0.001%. This is attributed to the change in surface characteristics due to the deposition of a very thin layer of CNTs on the surface. This layer delays nucleate boiling and causes a reduction in the size of the large vapor canopy around the CHF. This results in a significant increase in the CHF.
In an effort to determine the combined effects of major parameters of heat exchanger tubes on the nucleate pool boiling heat transfer in the scaled in-containment refueling water storage tank (IRWST), a total of 1,966 data for q'quot; versus ${\Delta}T$ has been obtained using various combinations of tube diameters, surface roughness, and tube orientations. The experimental results show that (1) increased surface roughness enhances heat transfer for both horizontal and vertical tubes, (2) the two heat transfer mechanisms, i.e.,enhanced heat transfer for both horizontal and vertical tubes, (2) the two heat transfer mechanisms, i.e., enhanced heat transfer due to liquid agitation by bubbles generated and reduced heat transfer by the formation of large vapor slugs and bubble coalescence are different in two regions of low heat fluxes (q'quot; $\leq$50kW/$m^2)$ and high heat fluxes (q'quot; $\geq$50kW/$m^2)$ depending on the orientation of tubes and the degree of surface roughness, and (3) the heat transfer rate decreases as the tube diameter is increased for both horizontal and vertical tubes, but the effect of tube diameter on the nucleate pool boiling heat transfer for vertical tubes is greater than that for horizontal tubes. Two empirical heat transfer correlations for q'quot;, one for horizontal tubes and the other for vertical tubes, are obtained in terms of surface roughness $({\varepsilon})$ and tube diameter (D). In addition, a simple empirical correlation for nucleate pool boiling heat transfer coefficient $(h_b)$ is obtained as a function of heat flux (q'quot;) only.ucleate pool boiling heat transfer coefficient $(h_b)$ is obtained as a function of heat flux (q'quot;) only.

The evaporation heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$(R-744) in a horizontal tube was investigated experimentally. The main components or the refrigerant loop are a receiver, a variable-speed pump, a mass flow meter, a pre-heater and evaporator(test section). The test section consists of a smooth, horizontal stainless steel tube of inner diameter of 4.57 mm. The experiments were conducted at mass flux of 200 to $500\;kg/m^2s$, saturation temperature of -5 to $5^{\circ}C$, and heat flux of 10 to $40\;kW/m^2$. The test results showed the heat transfer of $CO_2$ has a greater effect on nucleate boiling more than convective boiling. Mass flux of $CO_2$ does not effect nucleate boiling too much. In comparison with test results and existing correlations, the best fit of the present experimental data is obtained with the correlation of Jung et al. But existing correlations failed to predict the evaporation heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$, therefore, it is necessary to develope reliable and accurate predictions determining the evaporation heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$ in a horizontal tube.

Several analytical models for the departure from nucleate boiling (DNB) phenomenon have been developed during the last decade. Among these, Chang & Lee's model based on a bubble crowding mechanism is remarkable in the fundamental features characterized as the formulation of mass, energy, and momentum balance equation at thermal-hydraulic conditions leading to the DNB. However, Bricard and Souyri remarked that the assumption of stagnant bubbly layer at the DNB condition is questionable and the signs on the axial projections of the momentum fluxes at the core/bubbly layer interface in the momentum balance equations are erroneous. From this remark, Chang & Lee's model has been re-examined and modified by correcting the erroneous treatments in the momentum balance equations and removing the spurious assumptions. The revised model predicts well the extensive DNB data of water in uniformly heated tubes at low qualities and shows more accurate prediction compared with the original model.

Boiling heat transfer coefficients of pure refrigerants(R22, R32, R125, R134a, R290, and R600a) and refrigerant mixtures(R32/R134a and R290/R600a) are measured experimentally and compared with several correlations. Convective boiling term of Chen's correlation predicts experimental data for pure refrigerants fairly well(root-mean-square error of 12.1% for the quality range over 0.2). An analysis of convective boiling heat transfer of refrigerant mixtures is performed for an annular flow to study degradation of heat transfer. Annular flow is the subject of this analysis because a great portion of the evaporator in refrigeration or air conditioning system is known to be in the annular flow regime. Mass transfer effect due to composition difference between liquid and vapor phases, which is considered as a driving force for mass transfer at interface, is included in this analysis. Correction factor $C_F$ is introduced to the correlation for the pure substances through annular flow analysis to apply the correlation to the mixtures. The flow boiling heat transfer coefficients are calculated using the correlation considering nucleate boilling effect in the low quality region and mass transfer effect for nonzazeotropic refrigerant mixtures.
The design of a nuclear reactor core requires basic thermal-hydraulic information concerning the heat transfer regime at which onset of nucleate boiling (ONB) will occur, the pressure drop and flow rate through the reactor core, the temperature and power distributions in the reactor core, the departure from nucleate boiling (DNB), the condition for onset of flow instability (OFI), in addition to, the critical velocity beyond which the fuel elements will collapse. These values depend on coolant velocity, fuel element geometry, inlet temperature, flow direction and water column above the top of the reactor core. Enough safety margins to ONB, DNB and OFI must-emphasized. A heat transfer package is used for calculating convection heat transfer coefficient in single phase turbulent, transition and laminar regimes. The main objective of this paper is to study the possibility of power upgrading of WWR-S research reactor from 2 to 10 MWth. This study presents a one-dimensional mathematical model (axial direction) for steady-state thermal-hydraulic design and analysis of the upgraded WWR-S reactor in which two types of plate fuel elements are employed. FOR-CONV computer program is developed for the needs of the power upgrading of WWR-S reactor up to 10 MWth.
An experimental study was performed to evaluate the effects of surface coating and an enhanced insulation structure on the downward facing boiling process and the critical heat flux on the outer surface of a hemispherical vessel. Steady-state boiling tests were conducted in the Subscale Boundary Layer Boiling (SBLB) facility using an enhanced vessel/insulation design for the cases with and without vessel coatings. Based on the boiling data, CHF correlations were obtained for both plain and coated vessels. It was found that the nucleate boiling rates and the local CHF limits for the case with micro-porous layer coating were consistently higher than those values for a plain vessel at the same angular location. The enhancement in the local CHF limits and nucleate boiling rates was mainly due to the micro-porous layer coating that increased the local liquid supply rate toward the vaporization sites on the vessel surface. For the case with thermal insulation, the local CHF limit tended to increase from the bottom center at first, then decrease toward the minimum gap location, and finally increase toward the equator. This non-monotonic behavior, which differed significantly from the case without thermal insulation, was evidently due to the local variation of the two-phase motions in the annular channel between the test vessel and the insulation structure.
Phenomenon of droplet impingement with high temperature wall needs to be investigated because atomization process of droplet and cooling process of the wall by the impingement are very important in industry, thus studies concerned with temperature of piston wall have been conducted in spray characteristics analysis of diesel engine. Hence, in this study, we defined $DT_{sat}(=T_w-T_{sat})$ superheat degree of the wall by difference between $T_w$ considering surface temperature of piston in the actual engine and $T_{sat}$ saturation temperature of the fuel and then investigated spray behavior of wall impinging with variance of the boiling process. In this study, in order to analyze wall impingement of droplet in accordance with difference of boiling condition, calculational conditions were set as $DT_{sat}=40K$(nucleate boiling), $DT_{sat}=140K$(transition boiling), and $DT_{sat}=240K$(film boiling). As a result, it can be found that fuel vapor increases and droplet mass decreases in the order of the nucleate boiling, transition boiling, and film boiling.
This paper reports an experimental study on flow boiling of pure refrigerants R l34a and R l23 and their mixtures in a uniformly heated horizontal tube. The flow pattern was observed through tubular sight glasses with an internal diameter of 10㎜ located at the inlet and outlet of the test section. Tests were run at a pressure of 0.6 MPa in the heat flux ranges of 5-50㎾/㎡, vapor quality 0-100 percent and mass velocity of 150-600㎏/㎡s. Both in the nucleate boiling-dominant region at low quality and in the two-phase convective evaporation region at higher quality where nucleation is supposed to be fully suppressed, the heat transfer coefficient for the mixture was lower than that for an equivalent pure component with the same physical properties as the mixture. The reduction of the heat transfer coefficient in mixture is explained by such mechanisms as mass transfer resistance and non-linear variation in physical properties etc. In this study, the contribution of convective evaporation, which is obtained for pure refrigerants under the suppression of nucleate boiling, is multiplied by the composition factor by Singal et al. (1984). On the basis of Chen's superposition model, a new correlation is presented for heat transfer coefficients of mixture.
