Nuclear containment building is used as second blockage to protect us from a radiation leakage caused by the natural disaster or any accidents, so it's safety is important and must be kept with continuous surveillance. In this study, we measured the strain of a nuclear containment building's wall by using FBG sensor and investigated the structural safety of a nuclear containment building. 50 FBG strain sensors and 18 FBG strain sensors were attached on the side wall and upper dome of a nuclear containment building, respectively. We measured the strains of the outside concrete wall during the Structural Integrity Test (SIT) of a nuclear containment building. The strain of an upper dome was larger than that of a side wall, about $200{\mu}{\varepsilon}$. And the very small strain was measured at vertical direction of a side wall. These experimental results were used to evaluate the structural health of nuclear containment building.

Nonlinear stress analysis of nuclear containment building is carried out using microscopic concrete material model. The present study mainly focuses on the evaluation of the ultimate pressure capacity of idealized containment building in nuclear power plant. For this purpose, an eight-node degenerated shell element it adopted and an imaginary opening in the apex of containment building is allowed in FE model. From numerical analysis, the adopted concrete material model performs well and has a good agreement with the result obtained by using ABAQUS. Finally, we propose the present study as a benchmark test for nonlinear analysis of containment building.

Nuclear containment building is the last barrier for being secure from any nuclear power plant accident. Therefore, it is very important to understand the ultimate capacity of nuclear containment building to loads associated with severe accidents. LOCA (loss of coolant accident) is considered as the basic accidental load and CANDU-type containment building is considered as a target structure in order to conduct the numerical analysis for the structural safety of a containment building. The CANDU-type containment building is a prestressed concrete shell structure which has the dome and the cylindrical wall and is reinforced with bonded tendons. In this paper, the evaluation of ultimate internal pressure capacity was carried out by nonlinear analysis of a prestressed concrete containment building using 3-dimensional structural analysis system.
The containment building Kori Unit 1 may require sequential steps for full decommissioning. This study assumes that the containment building is to be used as an auxiliary building that handles nuclear power systems and materials during decommissioning before conversion into a greenfield. Through the derivation of guidelines and dose evaluation, it was confirmed whether the radiation workers were satisfied with the ALARA decision. The specific modeling of the external radiation exposure was performed based on the facility investigation procedures. The external radiation specific derived concentration guideline levels (DCGLs) for radiation workers in containment building were obtained using the RESRAD-BUILD code and were applied to the VISIPLAN 3D ALARA Planning Tool code to calculate the working dose and check worker safety. The derivation of site-specific and realistic DCGLs and dose evaluation via 3D modeling can contribute to the scenario development for the decommission and remediation of containment building.
This paper provides a method for generating flight path of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) that is intended to be used in visual inspection of dome-type nuclear containment building. The method basically employs 3-D model to extract accurate location coordinates. Two basic route patterns that provide guide lines in defining moving locations were defined for each side wall and dome section of the containment. The route patterns support sequential capturing of images as well. In addition, several simple equations and an algorithm for calculation of the moving location on the route were developed on the basis of 3-D geometric characteristics of the containment building. A prototype computer program has been implemented to validate the proposed method, and a case study shows the method can visualize covering area in 3-D model as well.

Three-dimensional structural analysis system for nuclear containment building is presented in this paper. This system includes high-performance plate/shell elements as finite element library. It also adopts numerical modeling technique for unbonded tendon as well as bonded tendon in prestressed concrete structures. This system is constructed by connecting several in-house program to a commercial program DIANA, and then is capable of performing nonlinear analysis for ultimate pressure capacity of nuclear containment building. Finally, three-dimensional structural analysis of CANDU-type containment building is carried out in order to test the reliability of this system. These numerical results are compared with reference values, which obtained from axisymmetric structural analysis.

The Kori Unit 1 will be decommissioned after a permanent shutdown in June 2017. South Korea has a 0.1 mSv/yr exposure limit standard for limited or unlimited site release. This is South Korea's first commercial NPP; therefore, if the containment building is reused as a memorial hall, it will contribute to the improvement of public understanding and enhance the public's acceptance of NPPs. Also, existing Kori Unit 1 nuclear power plant manpower resources can be reused after decommissioning and resident staff and memorial hall visitors can activate nearby commercial areas. Therefore, such a reuse scenario may also prevent an economic recession. The exposure dose was calculated using the following scenarios: worker in the containment building, visitor in the containment building, and worker in buildings other than the containment building. The exposure dose in the buildings was calculated by the RESRAD-BUILD developed by the Argonne National Laboratory (ANL). The preliminary exposure dose and derived concentration guideline level (DCGL) were derived.

According to natural frequency of soil, characteristics of earthquake responses of an isolated containment building in nuclear power plants are examined. For this, earthquake response analysis of seismically isolated containment buildings in nuclear power plants is carried out by strictly considering soil-structure interactions. The structure and near-field soil are modeled by the finite element method while far-field soil by consistent transmitting boundary. The equation of motion of a soil-structure interaction system under incident seismic wave is derived. The derived equations of motion are solved to carry out earthquake analysis of a seismically isolated soil-structure system. Generally, the results of this analysis show that seismic isolation significantly reduces the responses of the soil-structure system. However, if the natural frequency of the soil is similar to that of the soil-structure system, the responses of the containment buildings in nuclear power plants rather increases due to interactions in the system.

On March 11, 2011, a massive earthquake measuring 9.0 on the Richter scale and subsequent 10-.14 m waves struck the Fukushima Daiichi (FD) Nuclear Power Plant. The main and backup electric power was damaged preventing the cooling system from functioning. Fuel rods overheated and led to hydrogen explosions. If heat in the fuel rods is not dissipated, the nuclear fuel coating material (e.g., Zircaloy) reacts with water vapor to generate hydrogen at high temperatures. This hydrogen is released into the containment area. If the released hydrogen burns, the stability of the containment area is significantly impacted. In this study, researchers performed an explosion analysis in a high-risk explosion area, analyzing the hydrogen distribution in a containment building [1] and the effects of a hydrogen explosion on containment safety. Results indicated that a hydrogen explosion was possible throughout the containment building except the middle area. If an explosion occurs at the top of the containment building with more than 40% of the hydrogen collected or in the bottom right or left side of the of containment building, safety of the containment building could be threatened.

The Nuclear containment building is a main safety-related structure that performs shielding and conservation functions to prevent highly radioactive materials from leakage to the outside environment in the case of various environmental conditions and postulated accidents. The containment building contains a reactor, steam generator, pressurizer, tank, reactor coolant system, auxiliary system and engineering safety system, and is designed so that highly radioactive materials above the limits specified in 10 CFR 100 do not escape to the outside environment in the case of LOCA(Loss of Coolant Accident) for instance. The containment metal liner plate(CLP) is a carbon steel plate with a nominal plate thickness of 6 mm, which functions as a mold for the wall and dome of the containment building when concrete is filled, fulfills airtightness to prevent leakage of seriously radioactive materials. In recent years, backside corrosion was found on the liner plate in some domestic nuclear power plants. The main cause of backside corrosion was unfilled concrete. In this paper, an inspection technique of assessing filling suitability for CLP backside concrete is developed. Results show that the validity of inspection technique for CLP backside concrete using vibration sensor is successfully verified.
