내외부 이중튜브구조를 갖는 핵연료봉의 봉단마개 용접시험 평가 (Evaluation of Endcap Welding Test for a Nuclear Fuel Rod having External and Internal Tube Structure)

  • An irradiation test of a nuclear fuel rod having external and internal tube structure was planned for a performance. To establish fabrication process satisfying the requirements of irradiation test, micro-TIG welding system for fuel rods was developed, and preliminary welding experiments for optimizing process conditions of fuel rod was performed. Fuel rods with 15.9mm diameter and 0.57mm wall thickness of cladding tubes and end caps have been used and optimum conditions of endcap welding have been selected. In this experiment, the qualification test was performed by tensile tests, helium leak inspections, and metallography examinations to qualify the endcap welding procedure. The soundness of the welds quality of a dual cooled fuel rods has been confirmed by mechanical tests and microstructural examinations.

Development of thermal conductivity model with use of a thermal resistance circuit for metallic UO2 microcell nuclear fuel pellets

  • A metallic microcell UO2 pellet has a microstructure where a metal wall is connected to overcome the low thermal conductivity of the UO2 fuel pellet. It has been verified that metallic microcell fuel pellets provide an impressive reduction of the fuel centerline temperature through a Halden irradiation test. However, it is difficult to predict the effective thermal conductivity of these pellets and researchers have had to rely on measurement and use of the finite element method. In this study, we designed a unit microcell model using a thermal resistance circuit to calculate the effective thermal conductivity on the basis of the microstructure characteristics by using the aspect ratio and compared the results with those of reported metallic UO2 microcell pellets. In particular, using the thermal conductivity calculated by our model, the fuel centerline temperature of Cr microcell pellets on the 5th day of the Halden irradiation test was predicted within 6% error from the measured value.

핵연료봉 중간검사를 위한 장탈착 툴 개발 (Development of Disassembly Tool for Intermediate Examination of Nuclear Fuel Rods)

  • 조사시험 도중 핵연료의 특성변화를 확인하기 위하여 원자로 수조내에 위치한 조사리그로부터 핵연료봉을 분리한 후 핫셀로 이송하여 중간검사를 진행한다. 또한 중간검사를 마친 핵연료봉은 원자로의 작업 수조로 이동시켜 조사리그에 재장착을 하게 되며, 재조립된 조사리그는 원자로 노심의 조사리그에 장착시켜 조사시험을 계속 진행한다. 그러나 중성자 조사가 진행된 핵연료봉은 높은 에너지의 방사선을 방출하기 때문에 작업자가 방사선에 피폭되지 않게 하기 위하여 핵연료봉 장탈착 공정은 원자로 작업수조수 내에서 이루어져야 한다. 특히 조사리그의 길이가 5.4 미터이고, 핵연료봉의 장탈착 작업이 이루어질 하나로 작업수조수의 깊이는 6 미터로 매우 깊어 장탈착 작업을위한 특수한 장치가 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 중간검사가 가능한 새로운 핵연료봉 조립체를 설계하고, 조사 핵연료봉 조립체의 장탈착용 툴을 개발하여 노외 성능시험을 통해 그 성능을 검증하였다.

  • The instrumented fuel irradiation test at a research reactor is needed to evaluate the performance of the developed nuclear fuel. The fuel elements can be designed to measure the center line temperature of fuel pellets during the irradiation test by using temperature sensor. The thermal sensor was composed of thermocouple and sensor sheath. Micro-laser welding technology was adopted to seal between seal tube and sensor sheath with thickness of 0.15 mm. The soundness of welding area has to be confirmed to prevent fission gas of the fuel from leaking out of the element during the fuel irradiation test. In this study, fundamental data for micro-laser welding technology was proposed to seal temperature sensor sheath of the instrumented fuel element. And, micro-laser welding for dissimilar metals between sensor sheath and seal tube was characterized by investigating welding conditions. Moreover, the micro-laser welding technology is closely related to advanced industry. It is expected that the laser material processing technology will be adopted to various a pplications in the industry.

  • The paper summarizes the irradiation test and post-irradiation examination (PIE) data for the U-Mo low-enriched fuel that was irradiated in the MIR reactor under the RERTR Program. The PIE data were analyzed for both full-size fuel rods and mini-rods with atomized powder dispersed in Al matrix as well as with additions of 2%, 5% and 13% of silicon in the matrix and ZrN protective coating on the fuel particles. The full-size fuel rods were irradiated up to an average burnup of ${\sim}60%^{235}U$; the mini-rods were irradiated to an average burnup of ${\sim}85%^{235}U$. The presented data show a significant increase of the void fraction in the U-Mo alloy as the U-235 burnup rises from ~ 40% up to ~ 85%. The effect of irradiation test conditions and U-235 burnup were analyzed with regard to the formation of an interaction layer between the matrix and fuel particles as well as generation of porosity in the U-Mo alloy. Shown here are changes in distribution of U fission products as the U-235 burnup increases from ~ 40% up to ~ 85%.

핵연료조사리그 냉각수 유동 모의장치 개발 (Development of Coolant Flow Simulation System for Nuclear Fuel Test Rigs)

  • 핵연료 연소시험 도중 핵연료봉에서 발생하는 열을 효과적으로 제거하기 위해서는 핵연료의 발열량을 정확하게 계산하고 충분한 유속을 갖는 냉각수를 순환시켜야 한다. 하나로는 개방형 수조 형태로서 핵연료 연소시험을 위한 별도의 냉각수 순환 루프를 갖추고 있는데, 여기에 핵연료 조사리그를 장착하고 냉각수를 순환시킴으로써 조사중인 핵연료봉의 온도를 일정온도 이하로 유지시킨다. 특히 순환되는 냉각수의 유속이 매우 높은 상태에서 조사리그 내에 부착된 부품이나 센서들이 유체유발 진동에 의해 파손되거나 기능을 상실하는 경우 매우 큰 기회비용을 야기한다. 본 연구에서는 조사리그 부품의 건전성 사전 검토 및 고속 유동에서의 센서 동작 특성에 대한 사전검토를 위해 냉각수 모의 순환장치를 개발하였다.

Impacts of Burnup-Dependent Swelling of Metallic Fuel on the Performance of a Compact Breed-and-Burn Fast Reactor

  • The U-Zr or U-TRU-Zr cylindrical metallic fuel slug used in fast reactors is known to swell significantly and to grow during irradiation. In neutronics simulations of metallic-fueled fast reactors, it is assumed that the slug has swollen and contacted cladding, and the bonding sodium has been removed from the fuel region. In this research, a realistic burnup-dependent fuel-swelling simulation was performed using Monte Carlo code McCARD for a single-batch compact sodium-cooled breed-and-burn reactor by considering the fuel-swelling behavior reported from the irradiation test results in EBR-II. The impacts of the realistic burnup-dependent fuel swelling are identified in terms of the reactor neutronics performance, such as core lifetime, conversion ratio, axial power distribution, and local burnup distributions. It was found that axial fuel growth significantly deteriorated the neutron economy of a breed-and-burn reactor and consequently impaired its neutronics performance. The bonding sodium also impaired neutron economy, because it stayed longer in the blanket region until the fuel slug reached 2% burnup.

경수로 핵연료집합체 진동의 실험적 고찰 (An Experimental Study on PWR Nuclear Fuel Assembly Vibration)

  • Nuclear fuel with a big slenderness ratio is susceptible to flow-induced vibration under very severe conditions of high temperature, high flow and exposure to irradiation in nuclear reactor. The fuel assembly should, therefore, be designed to escape any resonance due to the vibration during the reactor operation, in particular, in case of the design changes. In addition, the amplitudes due to the grid vibration, the fuel rod vibration and the fuel assembly vibration should be minimized to reduce the grid-to-rod fretting wear. Fuel assembly vibration tests in air at room temperature and in water at high temperature have been performed to investigate fuel vibration behaviors. The frequency and damping during the test in air have been compared to those in water. Through the hydraulic test, the advanced assembly has been evaluated not to be susceptible to any resonance. In addition, the test data from the tests can be used to make fuel model and to evaluate grid-to-rod fretting wear.
