  • To alleviate NOx emission, a variety of approaches has been applied. In marine diesels, the application of SCR systems has been considered an effective exhaust aftertreatment method for NOx emission control. Most current SCR systems use a various catalyst for the reaction of ammonia with NOx to form nitrogen and water. In theory, it is possible to achieve 100% NOx if the $NH_3$-to-NOx ratio is 1:1. However, the reaction has a limited non-uniformity of the exhaust gas flow and ammonia concentration distribution. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the optimum flow conditions. In order to achieve uniform flow at monolith front face, we are equipped with a various mixed devices. In this paper, it is presented that the mixed devices play an important role improvement of flow patterns and particle distributions of $NH_3$ by numerical simulation.

  • Air-staging combustion is a relatively well-known technique to reduce NOx emission and used in combination with other techniques nowadays. However, the design variables are still selected depending upon operating circumstances. Though the fuel-rich condition of the primary combustion zone is very helpful to NOx reduction, its range is known to be restricted by the increase of carbon monoxide. However, in many cases carbon monoxide level is so low not to be the restriction at all. So we tried to expand the equivalence ratio range to the richer condition in the primary combustion zone and make the function of each burner component and its contribution to the overall NOx production clear.

  • We have evaluated the toxicity of interior materials for the railway passenger car by checking the release of $CO_2$, CO, NOx, SO2, HCl, HF, HBr, HCN. The NOx is one of the most effective for the determination of Toxic Index R value. It is generally known that the mechanism of thermal NOx generation without the Interior Material nitrogen source. This study started from the idea to check the NOx difference according to the furnace temperature. But from the results, it was revealed that NOx is not so sensitive for the furnace temperature in case of solid burning. Other gases such as HCN, CO were more changeable to the furnace Temp. We reported the test result as for toxicity index r(x).

A Study on Degradation Characteristic and Flow Behavior in De-NOx Catalyst (탈질촉매 내 열화특성과 유동상태에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, the indirect correlation of degradation characteristic and flow behavior in the de-NOx catalyst is investigated experimentally. The inner flow behavior in the de-NOx catalyst is varied from turbulent flow to laminar flow and the degradation of the de-NOx catalyst is remarkably affected by the inner flow. The degradation of the catalyst is increased in the upstream region near the inlet because injected turbulent flow enhances the adhesion of ash particle on the catalyst surface. The degradation of the catalyst near the inlet also governs the overall efficiency of the catalyst. The amount of adhered ash particles on the catalyst surface decreases as they progress downstream. This is due to the inner flow transition from turbulent flow to laminar flow.

  • As conservation of global environment has becoming a major outstanding issue of the world, the International Maritime Organization(IMO) has been legislation a convention for prevention of air pollution from ships. By the new convention, use of air pollutants such as SOx, NOx, Freon and Halon Gas shall be restricted. In this regards, analysing these requirements of the convention is required as the convention will also be applied on restriction of discharging exhaust gases from ships by establishing a requirement of SOx and NOx discharged. The purposed of this study is as follows ; 1) Introducing of the backgrounds of legislating the convention for prevention of air pollution from ships and major contents of the convention and a countermeasures on the convention by Korea. 2) Reviewing by analyzing the influence on domestic industies concerned by restriction of SOx, NOx in exhaust gases and sulphur content of fuel oil. 3) Preparing a countermeasure on the convention properly.

  • 최근 자동차 수요증가 및 산업용 보일러 둥 급증하는 추세이며 이로 인한 대도시 대기오염 문제는 위험수위에 도달해 있다. 이러한 산업용 보일러, 화력발전소등 고정배출원과 자동차에서 발생하는 배기가스에는 인체에 유해한 일산화탄소(CO), 질소산화물(NOx), 황산화물(SOx)등이 다량 함유되어 있다. 유독성 가스중 질소산화물(NOx) 저감방법에는 특히 선택적 촉매환원법(Selective Catalytic Reduction, SCR)이 가장 널리 적용되고 있다.   • The characteristics of spray combustion and dropsize of spray through twin-fluid atomizer was experimentally investigated. The distribution of flame temperature have an effect on the generation of NOx. To investigate there effects, flame temperature with different spray shape was observed. The spray shape was varied by various bluff-bodys. Mean temperature were measured by thermocouple respectively, and NOx concentration was measure by NOx analyser. Distribution of droplet sizes were measured by PMAS. The result showed that the flame with wide distribution has lower temperature and lower NOx emission compared with narrow.

  • This paper presents the removal characteristics of nitrogen oxides (NOx) by the dielectric ($Al_{2}O_{3}$) packed-bed plasma reactor. Reactor packed with 5-mm diameter $Al_{2}O_{3}$ beads, and was designed to remove NOx at atmospheric pressures from the moving pollution source such as diesel automobile. The experiments were conducted for applied voltages from 5 to 10kV, flue gas rate from 2 to 5L/min, and frequency from 0.5 to 2kHz. The NOx removal efficiency significantly increased with increasing applied voltage. Especially removal rate significantly increased with increasing frequency. However, in this experiment discharge power was relatively high.

  • Fuel lean reburning method is very attractive way in comparison with conventional reburning method for reducing NOX. Meanwhile, the knowledge of the how flue gas re-circulated, temperature distribution and species concentration is crucial for the design and operation of an effective fuel lean reburning system. For this reason, numerical analysis of fuel lean reburning system is a very important and challenge task. In this work, the effect of fuel lean reburn system on NOX reduction has been experimentally and numerically conducted. Experimental study has been conducted with a 15kW lab scale furnace. Liquefied Petroleum Gas is used as main fuel and reburn fuel. To carry out numerical study, the finite-volume based commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code FLUENT6.3 was used to simulate the reacting flow in a given laboratory furnace. Steady state, three dimensional analysis performed for turbulent reactive flow and radiative heat transfer in the furnace.

Effect of High Ash Coal on Unburned Carbon and NOx Emission (미연분 및 NOx배출 특성에 대한 고회분탄의 영향 연구)

  • The effect of high ash coal which has relatively high ash content and low combustibility on unburned carbon and NOx emission was experimentally investigated at several excess air ratio and particle size conditions of four coals containing different ash content in a drop tube furnace. Flue gas was measured by Gas analyzer in order to figure out unburned carbon characteristics. The results show that the higher content of ash makes the higher unburned carbon rate, subsequent changes in NOx emission characteristics was investigated.
