In Korea, the nosocomial infection control program is not well developed. This situation is created by a lack of interest from medical personnel and the medical payment system. This study identifies current problems and develops a model for nosocomial infection control. The studies of Lee & Kim(1995), Lee (1993) and SENIC project model were used to construct this model. 1. The problems of nosocomial infection control were identified as the following: dis approval by hospital authorities, lack of sources for program direction, lack of overall structure and function in the program, inadequate direct action, lack of education and training, and so on. 2. The problems are reorganized according to the 5 elements of system theory. 3. As a result, the new nosocomial infection control model was developed. The inputs of the model were the elements, resources and boundaries of nosocomial infection. With the new model, each hospital can evaluate their current programs and plan a new program for the better control of nosocomial infection.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of infection control education, knowledge, attitude and self-confidence of student nurses, regarding nosocomial infection control. Method: This was a nonequivalent control group nonsychronized design. The participants were 83 student nurses who were conveniently assigned to the experimental or a control group. The data were collected from March 5 to June 11, 2008 and analyzed based on Fisher's exact test and t-test. Result: The 1st hypothesis, "Posttest nosocomial infection control knowledge scores for the experimental group will be higher than scores for the control group" was supported (t=2.057, p=.043). The 2nd hypothesis, "Posttest nosocomial infection control attitude scores for the experimental group will be higher than those for the control group" was not statistically significant (t=.466, p=.643), The 3rd hypothesis, "Posttest nosocomial infection control self-confidence scores for the experimental group will be higher than those for the control group" was not statistically significant (t=2.290 p=.025). Conclusion: This infection control education was effective in increasing the levels of knowledge and self-confidence for student nurses regarding nosocomial infection control.
Hospitals accomodate patients who have a high risk of infection due to reduced immunity as well as people who require surgical, medical or other treatments. Consequently, the role of clinical nurses, who come into close contact with these patients is very important in the control of nosocomial infection. This study was done to investigate and compare the level of perception of the importance of the control of nosocomial infections as well as the level of actual performance, and the level of satisfaction with the control of nosocomial infection by the clinical nurses. Thus, the purpose of this study is to contribute basic data for improving policies and educational programs to control nosocomial infection. A summary of the survey results is as follows. 1) The means of scores on all categories of the inquiry were 4. 51 for awareness 4.42 for actual performance, and 3.20 for satisfaction, of a possible high score of 5.00. 2) Correlations of the level of perception of importance between characteristics of nurses and hospital control of nosocomial infection differed significantly according to the type of hospital establishment type (p=.005), age(p=.000), career(p=.000), position (p=.002), and regular conferences on infection control in working departments(p=.003), Correlation of the level of actual performance between characteristics of nurses and hospital control of nosocomial infection diffesed significantly according to type of hospital(p=.000), hospital size (p=.009), working department(p=.000), age(p=.000), career (p=.000), school career(p=.040), position (p=.000), education experience on nosocomial infection(p=.020), and regular conferences on infection control in working department(p=.000). Correlation of degree of satisfaction between characteristics of nurses and hospital control of nosocomial infection also differed significantly according to the type of hospital establishment (p=.003), working department(p=.000), age (p=.000), and regular conferences on infection control in working department (p=.000). 3) Correlation between clinical nurses, level of perception of importance and actual level of performance for the control of nosocomial infection was relatively positive (r=.57, p=.000). Correlation between clinical nurses degree of satisfaction and level of actual performance for control of nosocomial infection was relatively positive (r=.47, p=.000). Correlation between clinical nurses, level of perception of importance and degree of satisfaction degree with the control of nosocomial infection was also relatively positive (r=.27, p=.000).
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the perception on the quality of nosocomial infection control on perceived risk, trust, and the intention to revisit among the medical consumers. Method: 361 patients and their guardians who were hospitalized in women's hospital, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, participated in this study. The data was analyzed using SPSS Statistics 21.0. Results: The perception on the quality of nosocomial infection control had a negative(-) effect on perceived risk, a positive(+) effect on trust, a positive(+) effect on the intention to revisit. The perceived risk had a negative(-) effect on trust, a negative(-) effect on the intention to revisit. The trust had a positive(+) effect on the intention to revisit. The perceived risk was partially mediated by the perception on the quality of nosocomial infection control and the intention to revisit, while the trust was fully mediated by the perception on the quality of nosocomial infection control and the intention to revisit. Thus, it indicated that the perceived risk and trust had dual mediated effects as well as full mediated effects in the relationship between the perception on the quality of nosocomial infection control and the intention to revisit. Conclusions: The nosocomial infection control can be an important factor to contribute to hospital management by attract the loyal medical customers, not just cost-expenditure. The nosocomial infection control can help hospital revenue and customer management strategy. Thus, it will contribute to the effective marketing strategy in the medical field.

Purpose: This study was done to examine the level of compliance and the relation of related factors of nosocomial infection control among nurses in emergency rooms. The data will provide fundamental information for developing programs for nosocomial infection control in the emergency room. Method: Study participants were 183 nurses working in emergency rooms in general hospitals that had more than 500 beds and were located in Daegu, Daejeun, and Pusan. The survey was carried out from March 7 to March 26, 2006 and a structured questionnaire was used. Descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA and Sheffe test with SPSS 14.0 were used to analyze the data. Results: The average level for practice of infection control was relatively low Levels of compliance were high when the participants had: 1) regular conferences for nosocomial infection control, 2) positive perception of protection devices, 3) knowledge of whom to report and experiences of reporting needle stick injuries, 4) hospital guidelines for infection control and 5) enough equipment supplies from the hospital. Conclusion: Nosocomial infection control among emergency room nurses could be improved via personal, psychosocial, and organizational factors and related education.

Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the knowledge, attitude and self-confidence of student nurses regarding control of nosocomial infections and to provide data for preparation of an efficient policy and education program regarding nosocomial infections. Method: A descriptive survey design was utilized, and, using a questionnaire, which included 15 items for knowledge, 81 items for attitude, 81 items for self-confidence, data were collected from 520 student nurses. Descriptive statistic, t-test, one-way ANOVA and Pearson's correlation coefficients, and Stepwise multiple regression analysis were used with SPSS win 12.0 to analyze the data. Results: The mean score for knowledge was 0.63, for attitude, 4.38 and for self-confidence, 3.50. There was a significant positive correlation between knowledge, attitude and self-confidence in control of nosocomial infections. Attitude, practical attitude, and education were significant factors affecting self-confidence regarding nosocomial infection control. Conclusion: These research findings should be useful in promoting continuous and repeated educational programs on nosocomial infection for student nurses.
Purpose: This study was designed to investigate nursing students' exposure experience to infectious diseases and their knowledge and performance for the nosocomial infection control. Method: The data was obtained from 292 nursing students having clinical experience at two university hospitals in Seoul from November 2005 to February 2006. Specific questionnaire was constructed and used for this study. The obtained data was analyzed by using the SPSS window program. Result: The results were as follow : 1. Among the evaluation scores of knowledge for the nosocomial infection control, the score of sterilization and the score of the intravenous therapy management were low(.14). 2. Among the evaluation scores of performance for the nosocomial infection control, the score of hand washing is low(1.63). 3. 86.3 percent of the nursing students had exposure experience to infectious disease. Many of them did not use the protective equipments in clinical experience nor took any treatment after the exposure to infectious diseases. Conclusion: Based on these results, we suggest that the programs for the nosocomial infection control should be developed for nursing students. It is also suggested that nursing students should be educated before their clinical experience to keep protected from the infection. In particular, the hand washing, sterilization and intravenous therapy management should be emphasized in the educational programs.

Purpose: This study was done to examine the awareness and management practice of operating room nurses, to prevent nosocomial infection, to identify problems and to propose solutions. Method: The research tools used were the hospital infection control guideline and a modified version of the measurment tools used in the study of Cho (1998). The questionnaire consisted of questions on hand washing, personal hygiene and clothes control, cleaning and environment control, sterilizing supplies and disposal of contaminated materials. The collected data were analysed with the SPSS program. Results: The mean score for domain-specific awareness of nosocomial infection control was 4.81 out of a possible 5 points. The highest score was for sterilizing supplies and disposal of contaminated materials. The mean score for domain-specific practices of nosocomial infection control was 4.40, out of a possible 5 points. Sterilizing supplies and disposal of contaminated materials had the highest scores. The mean score for awareness in all domains was higher than mean score for practice. Among the general characteristics of the nurses, high awareness was found only in the provision of infection control guidelines and it had shown statistically significant difference. Examination of relation of general characteristics to practice showed that for age, career, the provision of infection control guidelines, and experience in infection control education there were statistically significant differences in the scores. For the relation between awareness of nosocomial infection control and practice, positive correlation was found in all domains, thus high awareness leads to high practice. Conclusion: Considering the result of this research, plans are needed that promote virtual practice of hospital infection control.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe nurses' recognition of, and practice level in management of general nosocomial infections, and methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin resistant enterococci (VRE) infections. Method: A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data. Data were collected on June, 2003 from 190 nurses in one university affiliated hospital located in Suwon. Result: The mean score for nurses' recognition of general nosocomial infection control was 3.57, MRSA control was 3.54, and VRE control was 3.86. The mean score on practice for control of general nosocomial infection was 3.19, for MRSA control, 3.20, and for VRE control, 3.63. There were statistically significant relationships between the recognition level and practice level for general nosocomial, MRSA, and VRE infection control. According to the general characteristics of the nurses, the mean scores for both recognition and practice were higher for those nurses who had had infection control education, for those who had worked longer in nursing, and for those who worked in the ICU. Conclusion: It is suggested that appropriate hospital infection control programs should be developed through continuous education and practice to improve nurses' level of the practice in general infection control, and especially in MRSA and VRE infection control.

This study was done to analyze the effects of a smear in the nasal cavity against nosocomial Infection. The smear used was mupirocin, and the study centered on infection which constitutes the majority of nosocomial infections called MRSA. The data were collected between March 23 1998 and June 31 of the same year in a university hospital in the Kyongi Province, and is made up of a experimental group of 14 patients who were given nasal cavity smears and a control group of 16 patients who were not given nasal cavity smears. The data were analyzed through frequency and the Chi-square tests and gave forth these results. 1. Of the experimental group 28.6% developed nosocomial infections while 62.5% of the control group developed infections. This difference was significant. 2. In the experimental group, all of the patients developed infections within the first week in the ICU, while 80% of the control group developed infections in the first week and 20% in the second week. The difference was not as marked here. 3. In the experimental group the DM group 66.7% contracted MRSA while 18.2% developed it in the non-DM group showing that the DM group had infection rate was 3.7 times higher than the non-DM groups. In the control group the DM group had a 100% infection rate while 50% of the non-DM group developed it. Overall the DM group's rate infection was 2.4 times higher than the non-DM group. 4. In the experimental group, 37.55% of the patients who had a tracheostomy developed it while 16.7% of the patients who did not have a tracheostomy developed infections. In the control group, 62.5% of the patients who had tracheostomy, and 37.5% of the patients who did not have tracheostomies developed infections. Those who had tracheostomies, and the control group had double the rate contracting infections. From these results we can see that nasal cavity smears are effective against nosocomial infections. In spite of the smears, patients with the diabetes mellitus had a high MRSA infection rate, which requires new alternative treatments.
