  • Paraquat is a useful nonselective herbicide widely used throught the world. However accidental or intentional ingestion of the herbicide cause fatal pulmonary injuring. But there is not suitable antidote of paraquat intoxication and therapeutic agents now be used are not effective. So, in this study we intended to evaluate the inhibitory effects of acetylmannan from Dioscorea batalas on paraquat toxicity. 100mg/kg acetylmannan from wild or cultured Dioscorea bataras was administered orally to male SD rats for 3 days and the administration time interval was 24hours. After one hour of final administration, 50mg/kg paraquat was administered intraperitonially. After 24 hours, the biochemical parameters of blood and tissues were examined. In paraquat treated groups, sGPT, BUN, creatinine, ALP levels were increased by 2 to 4 times of normal values. However in acetylmannan from wild Dioscorea batatas treated groups, sGPT, BUN, creatinine, ALP levels in blood and lung tissue were significantly decreased to normal levels. In acetylmannan from cultured Dioscorea batatas treated groups, BUN, creatinine were significantly decreased to normal values, but not in sGPT, ALP levels. Therefore, we concluded that acetylmannan from wild Dioscorea batatas can be used as an. antidote of paraquat toxicity.

  • In this paper, we consider some normality criteria concerning multiple values. Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a family of meromorphic functions defined in a domain D. Let k be a positive integer and ${\psi}(z){\not\equiv}0$, ${\infty}$ be a meromorphic function in D. If, for each $f{\in}\mathcal{F}$ and $z{\in}D$, (1) $f(z){\neq}0$, and all of whose poles are multiple; (2) all zeros of $f^{(k)}(z)-{\psi}(z)$ have multiplicities at least k + 3 in D; (3) all poles of ${\psi}(z)$ have multiplicities at most k in D, then $\mathcal{F}$ is normal in D.

  • The e.m.f. induced by a normal spot moving in a superconducting foil has been investigated by using the simulation and the experiment of a simple superconducting Power Supply. The induced e.m.f. has been derived theoretically from the magnetic field distribution within the spot. It is the sum of a DC component induced constantly by the Faraday's law during the spot's movement and a pulse component induced periodically by the flux conservation law at every electrical degrees 2$\pi$ radians. The DC component of the output voltage appears slightly nonlinear to the rotating speed, having values greater than the linear approximation values. The theoretical interpretation has been verified through experiment.

  • In this paper we study the problem of normal families of meromorphic functions concerning shared values. Let F be a family of meromorphic functions in the plane domain $D{\subseteq}{\mathbb{C}}$ and n, k be two positive integers such that $n{\geq}k+1$, and let a, b be two finite complex constants such that $a{\neq}0$. Suppose that (1) $f+a(f^{(k)})^n$ and $g+a(g^{(k)})^n$ share b in D for every pair of functions f, $g{\in}F$; (2) All zeros of f have multiplicity at least k + 2 and all poles of f have multiplicity at least 2 for each $f{\in}F$ in D; (3) Zeros of $f^{(k)}(z)$ are not the b points of f(z) for each $f{\in}F$ in D. Then F is normal in D. And some examples are provided to show the result is sharp.

  • Ten MHz pulsed NMR spectrometer was used to measure the magnetic resonance characteristics of Korean red ginseng. The difference in the internal structures of good and bad red ginsengs was examined by their NMR characteristics. Average values of $T_1$ and free induction decay(FID) ratios of under grade Korean red ginseng were the highest among the three groups categorized as normal, medium and under grades Korean red ginseng and average values of $T_2$ and $T_2$$^{*}$ of them were the lowest among the three groups. Principal component analysis(PCA) was used to observe the contribution of measured NMR values to the grade of Korean red ginseng. The measured $T_1$, $T_2$, $T_2$$^{*}$ and FID ratio of 79 Korean red ginsengs classified as normal grade, medium grade and under grade were examined using PCA analysis. Cumulative variance of PC1 through PC3 occupied more than 90% of total variance at first and second NMR measurement. Plots of PC scores for the most important PCs showed that normal red ginseng samples were distributed around the left region of PC1 axis and most of the undergrade red ginseng samples were scattered around the right region of PC1 axis.

  • Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions (DPOAEs) can be measured in the external ear canal two fold: amplitude and latency, but most DPOAE studies deal with amplitude aspects. The purpose of this study was to investigate the latency of the 2f1-f2 DPOAEs in ears with hearing losses and to see if it could be a clinically useful method to distinguish normal from abnormal ears. For this purpose, DPOAE latency were measured as a function of frequency from 1 to 8 kHz in 30 ears with conductive and sensorineural hearing losses (SNHLs). DPOAEs were recorded with Otodynamic Analyzer ILO92. Results showed that the latency decreased as the frequency increased up to 8 kHz. The mean values of DPOAE latency for ears of SNHLs were shorter at all frequencies when they were compared to the mean values of normal ears. The latency in ears of conductive hearing losses was shorter than normal ears at the selective frequencies, as well. The results support the hypothesis that latency values are shorter in pathological ears.

  • Purpose: To investigate the difference of fractional anisotropy (FA) values between 6- and 25-direction diffusion tensor images (DTI) in normal adult brain. Materials and Methods: DTI was peformed in 28 normal subjects (15 subjects with 6-direction, 13 subjects with 25-direction) in a 1.5 T MR system. DTI was done with SE-EPI sequence with TR/TE/NEX 10000/84/1, 5mm slice thickness and b=1000 s/mm2. FA values were measured from 8 different anatomical locations which included both cerebral peduncles, both posterior limbs of the internal capsules, both corona radiata, genu and splenium of the corpus callosum. Statistical difference of FA was tested between 6-and 25-direction DTI.

  • A cephalometric radiographic cross sectional comparative study was undertaken to investigate craniofacial growth in cleft lip and palate individuals. The material for this study consisted of 43 subjects with operated cleft lip and palate.(29 males, 14 females). The range of age was from 6 years to 12 years. The roentgenocephalometric values of cleft individuals were compared with values of normal individuals reported by Lee. The following conclusions were obtained; 1) The pattern of cranial base of the cleft subjects was almost the same as that previously reported for the normal individuals. 2) Anterio-posterior length of the mandible did not show any significant difference but in the cleft subjects, that of the males was larger than that of the females. 3) The maxilla of the cleft subjects was very retruded and showed very concave profile. 4) Gonial angle of the cleft subjects was very high, especially in the female clefts. 5) The height of ramus was very poor in the cleft subjects. 6) The facial length was almost the same, but the facial depth of the cleft subjects was smaller than that of the normal individuals. 7) Maxillary and mandibular incisors were severely retroclined. 8) The range of values in the cleft subjects was very variable and the female clefts showed more distured growth than the male clefts.

  • The blood samples of 280 suckling pigs and of 300 adult pigs were studied in a hope to establish normal hemograms of swine as reared in Korean local conditions. The examination included total counts of erythrocytes, leukocytes differential count, hemoglobinometry, and reticulocyte count. The results of this study are summarized as following. 1. Higher erythrocyte count was observed in adult pigs as compared with the values reported by other workers. The normal erythrocyte value for malewas $8.4{\pm}0.9$ millions with approximately 0.6 million less for female. 2. Relatively higher hemoglobin concentration was measured in the piglets at birth, which slightly decreased in piglets of 2nd and 3rd weeks. The Hb concentration was highest in piglets of 5th week amounting to 15.8gm/100ml of blood, and it gradually decreased to the adult-level thereafter. 3. The average diameter of erythrocyte was $6.6{\pm}0.72{\mu}$ in suckling pigs and $6.3{\pm}0.11{\mu}$ in adult pigs. This shows that erythrocytes of piglets are larger than those of adult pigs and the mean diameter is also arger than reported by other investigators. 4. The lower mean percentages of eosinopils, basophils, monocytes were found both in the blood of suckling and adult pigs. 5. The other blood values were in general agreements with the values reported by other workers.

  • Fruits of 'Manita', a red pepper cultivar, and 'HL', a cultivar bred for single-harvest, cultivated by direct sowing method were harvested simultaneously. The red fruits were freeze-, sun-, indoor-, hot-air $(65^{\circ}C)$, and excessive hot-air (50% longer time) dried. For Manita. ASTA values of freeze- and indoor-dried red pepper were the highest $(153.6{\sim}168.4)$, and those of sun- and hot air-dried ones were $119.2{\sim}131.5$. Excessive hot-air drying decreased the redness by about $9{\sim}15%$ compared to normal hot-air drying. For HL, ASTA values $(150.3{\sim}171.7)$ of indoor-dried red peppers were much higher than other dried peppers. Red pigment in HL was destroyed easily during sun drying, showing values of only $49.2{\sim}69.2$. By excessive hot-air drying, the redness did not decrease, compared to normal hot-air drying. The organic acid contents of both cultivars were higher in sun- and hot-air-dried ones than freeze- and indoor-dried ones. Copsaicinoid contents of both cultivars decreased up to 22% by excessive hot-air drying compared to normal hot-air drying. Sugar contents were lower in all drying methods other than freeze drying for both cultivars.
