Purpose : To evaluate the effect of cervical strengthening exercise on balance ability in healthy adults. Method : The subjects consisted of forty healthy people. The subjects were divided into two group. The control group(n=14) received no exercise and/or stimulation. The cervical strengthening exercise group(n=14) performed therapeutic intervention using cervical exercise for strengthening of cervical spine muscle. The exercise group were accomplished during 6 weeks(2~3set, 5times/week). All tests were completed before and after experiment. The static balance ability was measured by normal standing when subjects open and close their eyes on GOOD BALANCE SYSTEM, respectively. For each case, the experimental data were obtained in 3 items: mean X speed, mean Y speed and velocity moment. Result : The results of this study were as follows; 1. In the exercise group, the statistically significant difference were shown on X speed and Y speed in the case of normal standing when subjects open and close their eyes and X speed, Y speed and velocity moment in the case of normal standing when subjects close their eyes(p<0.05). 2. In control group, the statistically significant difference were not shown on all posture(p>0.05). 3. There were a statistically significant difference in the X speed and Y speed in the case of normal standing when subjects open their eyes between control group and the exercise group(p<0.05). There were a statistically significant difference in the X speed, Y speed and velocity moment in the case of normal standing when subjects close their eyes between control group and exercise group(p<0.05). Conclusion : The above results revealed that therapeutic intervention for muscle strengthening of cervical there were positive changes to balance ability.
The purpose of this study was to compare acoustic differences of fricative /s/ between the dysarthric subjects and normal subjects. In additional, the subjects' speeches were evaluated in terms of word intelligibility containing /s/ and perceptual severity. Acoustic parameters were duration, peak frequency and intensity of /s/. The results showed that the first peak frequency and intensity of /s/ were significantly different between dysarthric subjetcts and normal subjects. Second, peceptual parameters were significantly different between dysarthric subjetcts and normal subjects. The Pearson correlation coefficient was used to determine the relationship between the acoustical and perceptual data. The results showed that there was a strong correlation between perceptual parameters and peak frequency of /s/.
This study was conducted to investigate the risk of chronic disease as predicted by abdominal obesity in Korean adult females. Data on 2,738 adult females aged 40~64 yrs was obtained from the 2013~2014 Korean National Health Nutrition Examination Survey. The subjects were divided into normal (n=1,835), abdominal obesity (AO, n=73), and BMI-diagnosed abdominal obesity (BMI-AO, n=505) groups based on the NCEP-ATP III guidelines and by applying the KSSO definition regarding waist circumference. Triglyceride blood levels, fasting blood sugar levels, systolic blood pressure, and diastolic blood pressure were higher in the AO and BMI-AO groups than in the normal group. The HDL-cholesterol levels of subjects in the two abdominal groups were lower as compared to those of subjects in the normal group. The mean adequacy ratio was lower among subjects in the AO and BMI-AO groups than among those in the normal group. Moreover, the NAR and INQ scores of some micro-nutrients in both of the abdominal obesity groups were lower than those in the normal group. Both the AO and BMI-AO groups showed significantly higher risks of hypertriglycemia, hyperglycemia, hypertension, hypoHDL-cholesterolemia, and metabolic syndrome than were shown by the normal group. Notably, as compared to the normal group, the AO group showed higher risk of hypercholesterolemia, hyperLDL-cholesterolemia, hypertriglycemia, and metabolic syndrome than did the BMI-AO group. This finding suggests that it is essential to develop prevention programs including programs for those with abdominal obesity despite their having a BMI within the normal range.
To evaluate the effect of damaged bronchial epithelium on epithelial permeability and physiologic changes of the airway in patients with bronchial asthma, we measured the concentration of protein and albumin in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), the width of intercellular junction and bronchial hyperreactivity in 22 patients with bronchial asthma and 21 healthy subjects. The results were as follows: 1) The concentration of protein in BALF from patients with bronchial asthma was higher when compared with that of normal subjects ($237{\pm}182$ vs $113{\pm}78\;{\mu}g/mL$, p<0.05), and the concentration of albumin was also higher than that of normal subjects ($116{\pm}126$ vs $32{\pm}88\;{\mu}g/mL$, p<0.05). The ratio of the concentration of protein in BALF to that in serum was increased in patients with bronchial asthma when compared with that of normal subjects ($0.35{\pm}0.30$ vs $0.16{\pm}0.11%$, p<0.05). 2) The intercellular junction of bronchial epithelium was widened in 14 of 20 patients with bronchial asthma, in contrast, 5 of 14 normal subjects (p<0.05). The mean width of intercellular junction was greater when compared with that of normal subjects ($1.71{\pm}1.81$ vs $0.56{\pm}0.85\;{\mu}m$, p<0.05). The width was well correlated with the ratio of protein in BALF to that of serum (r=0.3226, p=0.047) when observed in 18 patients with bronchial asthma and 10 patients with normal subjects. 3) The bronchial hyperreactivity, expressed as $PC_{20}$, was inversely correlated with the concentration of protein in BALF (r=-0.3030, p=0.038) in when observed in 18 patients with bronchial asthma and 19 normal subjects. 4) The width of intercellular junction was well inversely correlated with $PC_{20}$ (r=-0.5006, p=0.002) when observed in 19 patients with bronchial asthma and 11 patients with normal subjects. In conclusion, increased permeability and the damage of bronchial epithelium may lead to change of bronchial hyperreactivity.
Purpose : The purpose of this study was to identify the muscle activity of leg during stair down in the subjects with flatfoot and normal foot. Methods : The fourteen subjects with the flatfoot group and the fifteen subjects with the normal foot group volunteered for this study. All subjects descended the stairs that the height was 20cm and consisted 25 stairs. The target muscles for recording muscle activity were posterior fiber of gluteus medius, vastus medialis and vastus lateralis oblique, semitendinosus and biceps femoris, tibialis anterior, and medial and lateral fiber of gastrocnemius muscles. The muscle activity was recorded using the wireless EMG system. Results : The flatfoot group had significantly lower the muscle activity of posterior fiber of gluteus medius than the normal foot group in stance phase during stair down(p<.05). The flatfoot group had significantly higher the muscle activity of biceps femoris and tibialis anterior than the normal foot group in swing phase during stair down(p<.05). Conclusions : This study proposed that the subject with flatfoot should train the strengthening exercise for posterior fiber of gluteus medius.
Recently changes in thyroid physiology during acute and chronic medical illness were demonstrated. The serum $fT_3,\;rT_3,\;T_4,\;T_3,\;fT_4$, and TSH concentration were measured by radioimmunoassay method in 49 patients with critical illness and 10 normal subjects to assess the change of thyroid function in critical illness. The results were as follows; 1) The mean serum $fT_3$ concentration was $6.68{\pm}1.05pmol/ml$ in normal subjects while in patients with critical illness the serum $fT_3$ concentration was significantly lowered to $1.55{\pm}1.15pmol/ml$(p<0.001). 2) The mean serum $rT_3$ concentration was $0.22{\pm}0.44ng/ml$ in normal subjects and $0.42{\pm}0.37ng/ml$ in patient with critical illness. There was increment in critically ill patients as compared to normal subjects but no statistically significant difference(p>0.05). 3) The mean serum $T_3$ concentration was $1.24{\pm}0.25ng/ml$ in normal subjects and $0.56{\pm}0.56ng/ml$ in patients with criticial illness and there was significant difference in each other(p<0.005). 4) The mean serum $T_4,\;fT_4$, and TSH concentrations were $7.80{\pm}1.02{\mu}g/dl,\;1.26{\pm}0.39ng/dl,\;1.87{\pm}0.45{\mu}U/ml$ in normal subjects respectively and $6.02{\pm}3.06{\mu}g/dl,\;1.46{\pm}0.80ng/dl,\;1.74{\pm}0.79{\mu}U/ml$ in patients with critical illness and there was no significant difference between critically ill patients and normal subjects. 5) The ratio of mean serum concentration of $fT_3$ and $rT_3(fT_3/rT_3)$, $30.42{\pm}5.58$ in normal subjects was significantly higher(p<0.005) than the coresponding patients with critical illness. 6) The mean serum $fT_3$ concentration in expired cases(n=12) during admission was significant difference between expired and survived cases(p<0.005). The mean serum $rT_3$ centration was $0.67{\pm}0.58ng/ml$ in expired cases and $0.34{\pm}0.22ng/ml$ in survived cases with significant difference(p<0.005). Half of the cases who showed less than $3{\mu}g/dl$ of serum $T_4$ level were expired.
In order to investigate dietary risk factors for hypertension in th elderly, dietary intakes and dietary habits of 405 elderly subjects, aged 60-94, were assessed by the questionnaire, anthropometric measurement and a 24-hour dietary recall. The prevalence of definite (>95mmHg for diastolic or>160mmHg for systeolic blood pressue) and borderline(90-95mmHg for diastolic or 140-160mmHg for systolic blood pressure) hypertensive subjects 33.3% and 19.3%, respectively. The distribution of the subjects for Body Mass Index(BMI), waist-hip ratio, and alcohol consumption were significantly different among definite, borderline, and normal groups(p<0.05). The distribution of the subjects for smoking, exercise, and preference of salty food were not significantly different among definite, borderline, and normal groups(p>0.05). From the generalized logistic regression analysis of the risk factors for the hypertension, the subjects with over 27 of BMI had significantly higher risk of hypertension. Alcohol consumption and preference of salty food were significant risk factors of hypertension in the elderly. Dietary risk factors for the hypertension that had significant relationship to the hypertension were intakes of potassium, calcium, phosphate, sodium, vitamin B1, niacin, and folate. There was no significant difference of consumption frequencies of food and dish among definite, borderline, and normal groups(p>0.05). The amount of intakes for cereals and grain product, bean and their products, eggs were significantly different among definite, borderline, and normal groups(p<0.05). In summary, the amount of dietary intakes to hypertension in elderly population. Longitudinal studies for dietary risk factors on incidence of hypertension are needed in general population, especially in the elderly.
The purpose of this study was to investigate diadochokinetic (DDK) characteristics in the subjects with spastic cerebral palsy (CP) by severity. DDK characteristics were measured through rate, regularity, accuracy and consistency in Alternate Motion rate (AMR) and Sequential Motion rate (SMR) tasks. The subjects participated in this study included 27 subjects with spastic CP (mild- 9, moderate- 9, severe- 9) and 9 normal persons who are around 11-20 years old. On the result of this study, rate in AMR was significant difference between all spastic groups and normal group, and rate in SMR was significant difference between normal and mild groups and moderate and severe groups. In regularity of the DDK tasks, severe group had significant difference the other groups. Finally, accuracy and consistency of the DDK tasks exhibited significant difference between all spastic groups and normal group. In conclusion, the subjects with spastic CP have a tendency to produce slow and irregular syllable repetition as severity increases, but to produce inaccurate and inconsistent syllable repetition regardless of severity in the DDK tasks.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the change of before and after treatment of anterior openbite malocclusions treated by Multiloop Edgewise Archwire technique. The openbite sample consisted of 4 male and 12 female adults, treated with nonextraction or third molar extraction. The normal sample consisted of 58 subjects, which have pleasing facial profile and normal occlusion and no experience of orthodontic or prosthodontic treatment. The 58 subjects of normal sample were subdivided by cephalemetric vertical relationship of face. The 40 subjects, cephalometric vertical relationship of face was in normal range, classified as Normal Sample group 1. The 18 subjects, increased cephalometric vertical relationship of face, classified as Normal Sample group 2. The computerized cephalometric analysis was accomplished with 50 reference points for 22 skeletal measurements, 46 dentoalveolar measurements, 8 soft tissue measurements. Statistical analysis of the data was carried out with paired t-test, Student's t-test, and DUNCAN test using SAS(PC version), The results were as follows : 1. There were no statistically significant differences in skeletal measurement between before and after treatment. The major changes were in dentoalveolar region. 2. After treatment, the long axis of maxillary and mandibular posterior teeth were distally tipped-back, and uprighted to bisected occlusal plane. The interincisal angle was increased. 3. There were no statistically significant increase in the upper posterior dental height and statistically significant decrease in the lower posterior dental height. The upper anterior dental height was increased, but there was no statistically significant increase in the absolute upper anterior dental hight. The lower anterior dental height was increased. 4. After treatment, the maxillary occlusal plane to palatal plane angle and the mandibular occlusal plane to mandibular plane angle were statistically significant increased. Then, there were no statistically significant difference between after treatment group and normal sample group 2. 5. After treatment, the percentage of upper lip length to upper anterior dental height was decreased. Then, There were no statistically significant difference between after treatment group and normal sample group 2.
