The electromagnetic wave scattering from active objects has only recently attracted attention.$^{(1).(3)}$ Theoretical studies have considered normal-incidence plane-wave interactions with active dielectric cylinders with the prediction of large enhancements in the scattered field for bound mode structures. According to the theory of the electromagnetic wave scattering from a dielectric cylinder, the eigenvector solutions are discrete and have both guided (non-radiative) and leaky (radiative) mode solutions. By using an anti-guiding (leaky) structure instead of a guided structure and scattering at oblique incident angles near critical angle, the scattering resonances predicted by theoretical studies were obtained for the first time. A fine-grained scan of the plane-wave incident angle a reveals the existence of discrete scattering resonances. The diameter and real part of the index of refraction determine the resonant conditions and the imaginary part of the refractive index has a threshold value to make mode up for its radiation loss. The cross coupling between transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes is clearly detected for both active and passive scattering as theoretically expected. (omitted)
The reflection and transmission of micropolar thermoelastic plane waves at the interface between an elastic solid and micropolar generalized thermoelastic solid is discussed. The interface boundary conditions obtained contain interface stiffness (normal stiffness and transverse stiffness). The expressions for the reflection and transmission coefficients which are the ratios of the amplitudes of reflected and transmitted waves to the amplitude of incident waves are obtained for normal force stiffness, transverse force stiffness and welded contact. Numerical calculations have been performed for amplitude ratios of various reflected and transmitted waves. The variations of amplitude ratios with angle of incident wave have been depicted graphically. It is found that the amplitude ratios of reflected and transmitted waves are affected by the stiffness, micropolarity and thermal distribution of the media.

In this study, the reliability design method developed by Hanzawa et al. in 1996 for calculation of the expected damage to armor blocks of a horizontally composite breakwater is extended to take into account the variability in wave direction such as directional spreading of waves, obliquity of the design principal wave direction from the shore-normal direction, and its variation about the design value. To calculate the transformation of random directional waves. the model developed by Kweon et al. in 1997 is used instead of Goda's model, which was developed in 1975 for unidirectional random waves normally incident to a straight coast with parallel depth contours and has been used by Hanzawa et al. It was found that the variability in wave direction had great influence on the computed expected damage to armor blocks. The previous design, which disregarded wave directionality, could either overestimate or underestimate the expected damage by a factor of two depending on water depth and seabed slope, if the assumption of the present study that the stability formula for breakwater armor blocks proposed for normal incidence can be used for obliquely incident waves is valid.
A two-dimensional metal hole array (2DMHA) structure is fabricated by conventional photo-lithography and electron beam evaporation. The transmittance of the 2DMHA is measured at long wave infrared (LWIR) wavelengths (${\lambda}{\sim}10$ to $24{\mu}m$). The 2DMHA sample shows transmittance of 70 and 67% at $15.4{\mu}m$ due to plasmonic resonance with perforated silver and gold thin films, respectively, under surface normal illumination at LWIR wavelengths. The measured infrared spectrum is separated into two peaks when the size of the hole becomes larger than a half-pitch of the hole array. Six degenerated plasmon modes (1,0) at the metal/Si surface split to three modes at an incident beam angle of $45^{\circ}$ with respect to the surface normal direction, and wavelength shifts of the transmitted spectrum are observed in a red shift and blue shift at the same time.
The problem of interaction of surface water waves by small undulation at the bottom of a laterally unbounded sea is treated on the basis of linear water wave theory for both normal and oblique incidences. Perturbation analysis is employed to obtain the first order corrections to the reflection and transmission coefficients in terms of integrals involving the shape function c(x) representing the bottom undulation. Fourier transform method and residue theorem are applied to obtain these coefficients. As an example, a patch of sinusoidal ripples is considered in both the cases as the shape function. The principal conclusion is that the reflection coefficient is oscillatory in the ratio of twice the surface wave number to the wave number of the ripples. In particular, there is a Bragg resonance between the surface waves and the ripples, which is associated with high reflection of incident wave energy. The theoretical observations are validated computationally.

Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) have attracted the attention of scientists and engineers involved in a wide area of research, microscopy, diagnostics and sensing. SPPs are waves that propagate along the surface of a conductor, usually metals. These are essentially light waves that are trapped on the surface because of their interaction with the free electrons of conductor. In this interaction, the free electrons respond collectively by oscillating in resonance with the light wave. The resonant interaction between the surface charge oscillation and the electromagnetic field of the light constitutes the SPPs and gives rise to its unique properties. In this papers, we studied theoretical and experimental extraordinary transmittance (T) and reflectance (R) of 2 dimensional metal hole array (2D-MHA) on GaAs in consideration of the diffraction orders. The 2d-MHAs was fabricated using ultra-violet photolithography, electron-beam evaporation and standard lift-off process with pitches ranging from 1.8 to $3.2{\mu}m$ and diameter of half of pitch, and was deposited 5-nm thick layer of titanium (Ti) as an adhesion layer and 50-nm thick layer of gold (Au) on the semiinsulating GaAs substrate. We employed both the commercial software (CST Microwave Studio: Computer Simulation Technology GmbH, Darmstadt, Germany) based on a finite integration technique (FIT) and a rigorous coupled wave analysis (RCWA) to calculate transmittance and reflectance. The transmittance was measured at a normal incident, and the reflectance was measured at variable incident angle of range between $30^{\circ}{\sim}80^{\circ}$ with a Nicolet Fourier transmission infrared (FTIR) spectrometer with a KBr beam splitter and a MCT detector. For MHAs of pitch (P), the peaks ${\lambda}$ max in the normal incidence transmittance spectra can be indentified approximately from SP dispersion relation, that is frequency-dependent SP wave vector (ksp). Shown in Fig. 1 is the transmission of P=2.2 um sample at normal incidence. We attribute the observation to be a result of FTIR system may be able to collect the transmitted light with higher diffraction order than 0th order. This is confirmed by calculations: for the MHAs, diffraction efficiency in (0, 0) diffracted orders is lower than in the (${\pm}x$, ${\pm}y$) diffracted orders. To further investigate the result, we calculated the angular dependent transmission of P=2.2 um sample (Fig. 2). The incident angle varies from 30o to 70o with a 10o increment. We also found the splitting character on reflectance measurement. The splitting effect is considered a results of SPPs assisted diffraction process by oblique incidence.
Wave forces on fixed two-dimensional objects submerged in water of finite depth were analysed by Boundary Element Method using linear elements. It is assumed that the wave forces may be described by linear theory and that incident wave direction is normal to the objects of infinite length. In this paper, wave forces on a bottom-seated half cross section pipeline, a circular pipeline, a submerged pipeline and submerged breakwater of arbitrary shape were studied. The accuracy of the computational scheme is investigated by comparing the numerical results with the existing laboratory results and analytical solutions of other researchers.
This paper describes the dynamics of the weak shock wave propagating inside some kinds of branched pipe bends. Computations are carried out by solving the two-dimensional, compressible, unsteady Euler Equations. The second-order TVD(Total Variation Diminishing) scheme is employed to discretize the governing equations. For computations, two types of branched pipe($90^{\circ}$ branch,$45^{\circ}$ branch) with a diameter of D are used. The incident normal shock wave is assumed at D upstream of the pipe bend entrance, and its Mach number is changed between 1.1 and 2.4. The flow fields are numerically visualized by using the pressure contours and computed schlieren images. The comparison with the experimental data performed for the purpose of validation of computational work. Reflection and diffraction of the propagating shock wave are clarified. The present computations predicted the experimented flow field with a good accuracy.
This paper depicts the weak shock wave propagating inside some kinds of pipe bends. Computational work is to solve the two-dimensional, compressible, unsteady Euler Equations. The second-order TVD scheme is employed to discretize the governing equations. For the computations, the incident normal shock wave is assumed at the entrance of the pipe bend, and its Mach number is changed between 1.1 and 1.7. The turning angle and radius of the curvature of the pipe bend are changed to investigate the effects on the shock wave structure. The present computational results clearly show the shock wave reflection and diffraction occurring in the pipe bend. In particular, the vortex generation, which occurs at the edge of the bend, and its shedding mechanism are discussed in details.
A numerical study of the process of wave deformation, such as reflection and transmission coefficients and wave forms with bottom change was carried out by Boundary Element Method using linear elements. It is assumed that the incident wave is normal and oblique to the bottom and the wave may be described by linear theory The accuracy of the computational scheme is investigated by comparing the results of other researchers in the following several cases. (1) Simple and sloping stepped bottom geometry (2) Submerged breakater type bottom geometry (3) Trench type bottom geometry
