  • Nuclear fuel, including its fresh state, must be handled safely due to its critical and hazardous nature. Under normal transport conditions, several interactions take place among different components, such as transport cask used for loading the nuclear fuel and tie-down structure to attach with the vehicle. To ensure structural integrity of the nuclear fuel, vibrations and impacts transmitted from the vehicle must be sufficiently reduced. Therefore, in this study, we conducted two transportation tests from Daejeon to Kijang in Korea to verify the vehicle-induced vibrational characteristics of the KJRR-F fresh nuclear fuel when transported under normal transport conditions. The speed and location of the vehicle were obtained via GPS, and the accelerations between the vehicle and the KJRR-F fresh nuclear fuel were measured. Additionally, using the acceleration results, a structural analysis was conducted to confirm the structural integrity of the nuclear fuel under the most severe conditions during normal transport.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of auditory cues in the form of a metronome on gait initiation (GI) in Parkinson's disease (PD). 2 patients (mean age: 54 yrs) with idiopathic PD participated in the study. All patients (Hoehn and Yahr disability score of 2.0) were tested in the "on" state approximately 1.5 hours following the administration and fully responding to their PD medications. Subjects first initiated walking at self-initiated speeds to determine their cadences. Then, subjects were asked to initiate gait along the walkway while keeping pace with a metronome. The metronome rate (in beats/min) was set at a cadence 85% (slow condition), 100% (normal condition) and 115% (fast condition) of gait for each subject. Subjects were able to increase the speed of GI with faster cadence, but the speed of GI for the slow condition was similar to that of the normal condition. Swing toe-off was 578.3 ms for the fast condition, 709.4 ms for the normal condition and 736.2 ms for the slow condition. Respective times for swing heel-strike were 894.3 ms, 1110.2 ms and 1119.1 ms, and stance toe-off were 1105.4 ms, 1338.5 ms, and 1343.1 ms. Except for stance unloading ground reaction forces were greatest for the fast condition and smallest for the slow condition. It appears that PD patients were able to modulate GRFs and temporal events in response to auditory cues to achieve the peak acceleration force of the swing and stance limb. The findings from this study provided preliminary data, which could be used to investigate how PD patients modulate GRFs and temporal events during GI in response to tasks.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare voice parameters in auditory conditions (normal/noise/music) between a teacher group and a control group. Results of statistical analysis showed that the teacher group had higher jitter (%) and shimmer (%) values than the control group. It indicated that the teacher group had larger variations in pitch and dynamic of their voice. In the teacher group, the voice under noisy condition showed a higher value of fundamental frequency than that under normal condition. though its fundamental frequency did not show any significant difference between the noisy condition and the musical condition. In the control group, however, although the voice under noisy condition also showed a higher value of fundamental frequency than that under normal condition, its fundamental frequency was significantly different between the noisy condition and the musical condition.

  • In this study, characteristics of gaseous pollutants and particulate matter were investigated on the condition of DPF regeneration and normal DPF condition. THC, CO, $CO_2$, NOx, and $CH_4$ were analyzed by MEXA-7200H and CVS-7100 respectively. Particulate Matter (PM) was measured by difference in weight of Membrane filter. Particle Number (PN) was measured by CPC analyzer. And Sulfate, Nitrate, Organic were measured by Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (AMS). As a result, gaseous pollutants and particulate matter were detected in higher concentration during DPF regeneration than normal DPF condition. And the PN increased by 94%, the fuel consumption was reduced by 29% on DPF generation process. Sulfate, Nitrate and Organic were undetectable level during normal DPF condition. But the highest concentration of Sulfate, Nitrate and Organic were measured as $100{\mu}g/m^3$, $20{\mu}g/m^3$ and $15{\mu}g/m^3$ respectively on DPF regeneration condition. VOCs concentrations (Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, Xylene) were analyzed by using PTR-MS. Benzene and Toluene emission have little or no change depending on DPF regeneration. But the Ethylbenzene and Xylene have comparatively low emissions on DPF regeneration.

  • Model based machine condition diagnosis methods are generally using a normal and many failure models which need sufficient data to train the models. However, data, especially for failure modes of interest, is very hard to get in real applications. So their industrial applications are either severely limited or impossible when the failure models cannot be trained. In this paper, continuous hidden Markov model(CHMM) with only a normal model has been suggested as a very promising machine condition diagnosis method which can be easily used for industrial applications. Generally hidden Markov model also uses many pattern models to recognize specific patterns and the recognition results of CHMM show the likelihood trend of models. By observing this likelihood trend of a normal model, it is possible to detect failures. This method has been successively applied to arc weld defect diagnosis. The result shows CHMM's big potential as a machine condition monitoring method.

  • In this study, direct shear tests were carried out on the 30 rock joint samples in order to investigate the influence of roughness and normal stress on the shear behaviour. Joint roughness profiles were measured by use of 3D laser profiler, and then the samples were equally classified into three individual groups according to the roughness index of rock joints. Peak shear strength, residual shear strength, shear stiffness, dilation angle of rock joints were investigated in condition of five different constant normal load. Peak shear strength was increased as roughness index was increased, and the influence of roughness on strength was found to be more considerable in case of lower normal stress condition. Residual shear strength and shear stiffness were increased as roughness index and normal stress were increased. Finally dilation angle was decreased as normal stress was increased, but it was increased as roughness index was increased in the same normal stress condition.

  • In pressurized water nuclear reactors (PWRs), the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) upper head contains penetration nozzles that use a control rod drive mechanism (CRDM). The penetration nozzle uses J-groove weld geometry. Recently, the occurrence of cracking in alloy 600 CRDM penetration nozzle has increased. This is attributable to primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC). PWSCC is known to be susceptible to the welding residual stress and operational stress. Generally, the tensile residual stress is the main factor contributing to crack growth. Therefore, this study investigates the effect on weld residual stress through different analysis methods for normal operating conditions using finite element analysis. In addition, this study also considers the effect of repeated normal operating condition cycles on the weld residual stress. Based on the analysis result, this paper presents a normal operating condition analysis method.

  • For the special usage, the effort of developing AlN single crystals has been very hot in the world. The AlN-base UV LEDs are used on the field of sterilization, purification, curing and analyzing, which can advance human's living and medical processes etc.. AlN single crystals were grown by the PVT (Physical vapor transport) method. On the growing process, carbon crucibles with three different types such as normal size, taller than normal and wider than normal were used for comparison. The processing temperature was in the range of $1900{\sim}2100^{\circ}C$ and ambient pressure was 200~1 Torr. When the taller crucible was used, the sublimation mass was greater than normal dimension one but the best condition of growth changes widely. However the wider one gave much sublimation mass and growing condition was more stable than normal dimension. On limited growing furnace system, the changes of crucible dimension of PVT method provide the change of best condition for growth rate, as-grown crystal quality and growth condition stability.

  • Spent nuclear fuel generated at nuclear power plants must be safely stored during interim storage periods. A dry storage cask to safely store the spent nuclear fuel should be able to adequately emit the decay heat from the spent nuclear fuel. Therefore, heat removal tests using a half scale dry storage cask have been performed to estimate the heat transfer characteristics of a dry storage cask under normal, off-normal, and accident conditions. In the normal condition, the heat transfer rate to an ambient atmosphere by convective air through a passive heat removal system reached 83%. Accordingly, the passive heat removal system is designed well and works adequately. In the off-normal condition, the influence of a half blockage in the inlet on the temperature appears minimal. In the accident condition, the temperature rose for 12 hours after the accident, but the temperature rise steadied after 36 hours.
