A phytoplankton cultivation system was installed and operated for removal of nutrients from stream water polluted by nonpoint source pollution. The system was a continuous-flow culture comprising a phytoplankton tank that received inflow from a storage reservoir. When the system was operated as a batch culture for the purpose of determining hydraulic retention time (HRT), the proper HRT value was three days, and the removal rate of TP and TN averaged 70% and 44%, respectively. When the system was operated with the continuous flow from a stream for 45 days, 53.9% of TP and 53.1% of TN were removed as sludge. Due to active growth of phytoplankton, pH and dissolved oxygen in the phytoplankton tank were extremely high, reaching 10.8 and 16mg $L^{-1}$, respectively. It was concluded that nutrients can be effectively removed from polluted stream waters by cultivating phytoplankton.
In this study, rainfall runoff characteristics according to peak concentration were analyzed using the water quality and flow data in the Geumho river, and the direction of nonpoint source management such as monitoring and management period by pollution source was derived. Peak Water Quality Concentration is the concept that utilizes the extreme value as the concentration of non-point pollution control standard with the highest water quality in the rainwater runoff. Using this method, the evaluation factors such as cumulative precipitation(total precipitation), peak water quality concentration, cumulative precipitation up to peak water quality concentration, time to peak water quality concentration, and EMC to peak water quality concentration were examined and long- Rainfall runoff characteristics of nonpoint sources were analyzed. The results of the analysis suggested proper monitoring and management method to manage nonpoint source.

PADDIMOD2 was deloped to estimate nonpoint source pollution from paddy rice fields. The PADDIMOD2 was enhanced to estimate runoff and pollutant load during non-growing as well as growing season and to be easily used for public by development of Excel based system. Nutrient concentration and hydrology were based on Dirac delta function and continuous source function, and tank model for growing season and Event Mean Concentrations (EMCs) and SCS-Curve Number method for non-growing season. The PADDIMOD2 consists of three main component (input data, parameters data, and output data) by including eight Excel spread sheets. As a result of model application, total precipitation and irrigation were 1,051.7 mm and 439.2 mm, respectivley and surface runoff and water loss including infiltration and evapotranspiration were 463.0 mm and 947.9 mm, respectively. Annual nutrient loadings of T-N and T-P from study area were 6.7 kg/$km^2$/day and 0.5 kg/$km^2$/day, respectively. Development of PADDIMOD2 was focused on minimizing input data and maximizing user friendly system and is expected to be useful tool to evaluate various non-structure BMPs and estimate unit load from paddy rice fields for application at Korean TMDL.
TPLMS programs in four large rivers have been developed to improve the water quality from possible pollutants originated from watershed areas. The success of TPLMS program is depended on nonpoint source control. Currently, the pollutant loading from nonpoint pollution sources is gradually increasing as developing the nearby watershed. However, there are not enough data concerning on nonpoint pollution in Korea because of lacking of monitoring activities. It is the main reason of uncertainty. Therefore, this manuscript will summarize the EMCs in various landuses based on monitoring program. Also the EMC in each paved area will be compared and discussed to find the differences. When the EMC is compared by average monitored sample concentrations, the EMC values are 2-4 times higher than sample concentrations. It means the monitoring program is very important in the field of nonpoint pollution. The pollutant loadings from bridge landuse is higher than loadings from parking lot and highway because of more traffic activities.

Nonpoint source (NPS) pollution from small watersheds has recently been brought into attention as a potential pollutant to streams and tnbutaries, as majority of them are experiencing water quality degradation. This necessiates the quantification of NPS loadings from agricultural and forested lands. And this study attempts to quantify daily loadings from forested and farm lands using hydrologic and water quality monitoring. The hydrologic monitoring program consists of five water level gauging stations along creeks and stream at the Banweol reservoir watershed having 1220 hectare in size. Water sam pies were taken and analyzeel periodically at the streamf low gaging sites and tributaries. Soil samples were also taken and the chemical constitutes analyzed. The primary results indicate that the major sources of pollution were small villages and dairy farms on the watersheds, constituting two-third of total nutrient loadings to the reservoir. However, the loadings from paddies and upland areas may cause a problem to the water quality of the reservoir and stream as the measured levels of total nitrogen and phosporus are not low enough to ignore. Further studies are needed to quantify the effects of landuses and treatments at a watershed scale.
This study evaluates the water quality of the river near the alpine farmland in the upper Naerin stream, which is a typical stream of the upper Bukhan River with muddy water generation, by the flow examination, it aims to estimate the characteristics of nonpoint sources flowing out from the investigated area and figure out effective methods to reduce them. According to the result of water quality examination, the average BOD of the area not affected by the cultivated land among the areas of the upper Naerin River was 0.47mg/l, and total phosphorous was 0.007mg/l; thus, it maintained the cleanliness level of Ia. The average BOD of the area with the alpine farmland was 0.52mg/l, which was similar to the one of the non-cultivated land. But total phosphorous concentration was 0.023mg/l, which was more than three times higher than the area belonging to level II due to the effect of fertilizer ingredients discharged from the cultivated land. About the loadings of the investigated area generated from each of the pollution sources, BOD was 878.5kg/day and total phosphorous was 79.7kg/day. Moreover, for the load density, BOD was $2.22kg/day.km^2$ and total phosphorous was shown as $0.20kg/day.km^2$. Regarding the rates generated from nonpoint sources like land among the loadings per pollution sources, BOD was 54%, total nitrogen was 91%, and total phosphorous was 73.4%. Therefore, it was shown that most of the nutrients were produced from the nonpoint sources. The level of BOD runoff loading in the Jaun River area, where nonpoint sources were mainly generated, was 37.1kg/day and total phosphorous was 1.33kg/day. The flow rates to the generated amount were estimated as 10.5% and 4.7% each.
Long term monthly monitoring data showed that the water quality of streams flowing into Lake Paldang has been improved by various strategy for water. However, the effect of quality on Lake Paldang is still insufficient because of nonpoint source from watershed. In order to evaluate quantifying methods for pollution source and make a suggestion on improvements, Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) was constructed by using data set from the water quality and streamflow monitoring network in the Kyoungan watershed for Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs). Load duration curve (LDC) based on the result of the Kyoungan watershed SWMM indicated that the water quality criterion on $BOD_5$ was often exceeded in up-stream than down-stream. From flowrate-load correlation curve, SS load significantly increased as streamflow increases. 75.3% of streamflow and 62.1% of $BOD_5$ loads is discharged especially in the zone of high flows, but monitoring data set didn't provide proper information about the conditions and the patterns associated with storm events. Therefore, it is necessary to acquire representative data set for comparing hydrograph and pollutograph through monitoring experimental watershed and to establish methods for quantifying point and nonpoint source pollutant loads.

This study introduces a model of territorial analysis on Chungcheongnam-do Nonsan-chun valley area, which gives an example of a method of selecting the management area for non-point pollution source from land use to help eliminate its source. High discharge load per unit area signify high level of land ratio with high level of basic unit of development load (including factory sites, school sites, roadways), which mean that there are a significant level of urbanization. It is these areas with the examination of the water quality of the nearby river that should be considered as the management area for non-point pollution source. Thus, the management area for non-point pollution source should be sought in areas with high discharge load per unit area and high density of water pollution area. When level of drainage is high the pollution density level is relatively lower, and when the level of drainage is low the density level is relatively higher. The level of pollution from non-point pollution source is much lower with more water flowing through. The possible non-point pollution source areas that were selected with these standards were then examined with the distance from the river, the slope angle, land usage, elevation, BOD discharge density load, T-N discharge density load, T-P discharge density load, and were given a level one through five. Out of the possible areas Nonsan-si Yeonmu-eup Anshim-li was the densest area, and it was given level one. The level one area should be examined further with the field analysis to be selected as the actual management area for non-point pollution source.

A drainage ditch is normally a component of drainage networks in farming systems to remove surplus water, but at the same time, it may act as a major conduit of agricultural nonpoint source pollutions such as sediment, nitrogen, phosphorus, and so on. The hybrid turbidity reduction system using biodegradable check dam and synthetic polymer was developed in this study to manage pollutant discharge from agricultural farmlands during rainfall events and/or irrigation periods. The performance of this hybrid system was assessed using a laboratory open channel sized in 10m-length and 0.2m-width. Various check dams using agricultural byproducts (e.g., rice straw, rice husks, coconut fiber and a mixture of rice husks and coconut fiber) were tested and additional physical factors (e.g., channel slope, flowrate, PAM dosage, turbidity level, etc.) affecting on turbidity reduction were applied to assess their performance. A series of lab experiments clearly showed that the hybrid turbidity reduction system could play a significant role as a supplementary of Best Management Practice (BMP). Moreover, the findings of this study could facilitate to develop an advanced BMP for minimizing nonpoint source pollution from agricultural farmlands and ultimately to achieve the sustainable agriculture.

Wetland systems are widely accepted natural water purification systems around the world in nonpoint sources pollution control. In this study, the field experiment to reduce nonpoint source pollution loadings from agricultural drainage and polluted stream waters using wetland and pond system was performed. The removal rate of $BOD_5$, TSS, TN, TP, and $Chl-{\alpha}$ was 52%, 90%, 56%, 59%, and 81%, respectively. Performance of the experimental system was compared with existing data base (NADB), and it was within the range of general system performance. Overall the water quality improvement was apparent in wetland and pond system.
