  • To quantify irregular body motions the time series analysis was applied to the gait study. The motions obtained from gait experiment are complex to exhibit nonlinear behaviors. The purpose of this study is to measure quantitatively the characteristics of the major six joints of the body during walking. The gait experiments were carried out for eighteen young males walking on a motor driven treadmill. Joint motions were captured using eight video cameras, and then three dimensional kinematics of the neck and the upper and lower extremities were computed by KWON 3D motion analysis software. The largest Lyapunov exponent was calculated from the time series to quantify stabilities of each joint. The results provides a data set of nonlinear dynamic characteristics for six joints engaged in normal walking.

  • Quantifying dynamic stability is important to assessment of falling risk or functional recovery for leg injured people. Human locomotion is complex and known to exhibit nonlinear dynamical behaviors. The purpose of this study is to quantify major joints of the body using chaos analysis during walking. Time series of the chaotic signals show how gait patterns change over time. The gait experiments were carried out for ten young males walking on a motorized treadmill. Joint motions were captured using eight video cameras, and then three dimensional kinematics of the neck and the upper and lower extremities were computed by KWON 3D motion analysis software. The correlation dimension and the largest Lyapunov exponent were calculated from the time series to quantify stabilities of the joints. This study presents a data set of nonlinear dynamic characteristics for eleven joints engaged in normal level walking.

Investigation of Self-Excited Combustion Instabilities in Two Different Combustion Systems

  • The objective of this paper is to characterize dynamic pressure traces measured at self-excited combustion instabilities occurring in two combustion systems of different hardware. One system is a model lean premixed gas turbine combustor and the other a fullscale bipropellant liquid rocket thrust chamber. It is commonly observed in both systems that low frequency waves at around 300㎐ are first excited at the onset of combustion instabilities and after a short duration, the instability mode becomes coupled to the resonant acoustic modes of the combustion chamber, the first longitudinal mode for the lean premixed combustor and the first tangential mode for the rocket thrust chamber. Low frequency waves seem to get excited at first since flame shows the higher heat release response on the lower frequency perturbations with the smaller phase differences between heat release and pressure fluctuations. Nonlinear time series analysis of pressure traces reveals that even stable combustion might have chaotic behavior with the positive maximum Lyapunov exponent. Also, pressure fluctuations under combustion instabilities reach a limit cycle or quasi-periodic oscillations at the very similar run conditions, which manifest that a self-excited high frequency instability has strong nonlinear characteristics.

Evaluation of dynamic increase factor in progressive collapse analysis of steel frame structures considering catenary action

  • This paper investigates the effects of the tensile catenary action on dynamic increase factor (DIF) in the nonlinear static analysis for progressive collapse of steel-frame buildings. Numerical analyses were performed to verify the accuracy of the empirical and analytical expressions proposed in the literature in cases where the catenary action is activated. For this purpose, nonlinear static and dynamic analyses of a series of steel moment frame buildings with a different number of spans and stories were carried out following the alternate path method. Different column removal scenarios were considered as separate load cases. The dynamic increase factor that approximately compensates for the dynamic effects in the nonlinear static analysis was selected so to match results from the nonlinear dynamic analysis. The study results showed that the many expressions in literature may not work in cases where the catenary stage is fully developed.

  • 사람의 감정 중의 하나인 사랑은 사회학과 심리학에서 주된 관심사로 연구되어 왔다. 기본적인 사랑 모델에서 비선형 특성을 찾기는 어렵다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 기본적인 사랑모델에서 비선형 거동을 찾기 위하여 기본적인 사랑 방정식에 외력을 주고 이때의 시계열과 위상 공간을 통하여 비선형 거동이 있음을 확인한다. 또한 이 비선형거동이 일반 카오스 발생현상인 주기배증과정, 카오스, 주기과정의 현상과 유사하게 유사한 주기 배증 과정, 카오스, 주기과정이 있음을 확인한다.

Fuzzy Forecast of Nonlinear Time-series Data

  • The field of forecasting is considered as an application of time-series analysis even if the data is linear or nonlinear. To obtain the forecasted values from observed data exerts a big influence on the decision-making support system or the control of machine etc. The nonlinear data appear as the random enumerated data. However we sometimes find that the pattern of past appearance repeats itself when we try to observe these data locally. From this point of view, we propose a way of forecasting nonlinear data from the pattern of past appearance using fuzzy theory. The advantages of the method are that we can forecast the next data by small numbers of previous data, and react to some differences, considering the ambiguous mature of the given data.

가역접근법을 이용한 일유출량 자료의 비선형 예측 (Nonlinear Forecasting of Daily Runoff Using Inverse Approach Method)

  • 기존의 거의 모든 수문학적 연구에 있어서, 시스템의 특성을 파악한 뒤 예측을 실시하는 표준접근법이 채택되어왔다. 그러나 최근 들어 시스템의 특성분석에 앞서 예측을 실시하고, 상태공간 매개변수가 시스템의 특성분석단계가 아닌 예측단계에서 평가되는 가역접근법이 제안되었다. 본 연구에서는 최근에 제안된 가역접근법과 기존에 널리 적용되어온 표준접근법을 이론적 카오스 시계열과 Idaho주 Bear강의 일유출량 자료에 적용함으로써, 가역접근법의 적용성을 검토하고 카오스 시계열의 특성을 알아보았으며, 카오스이론이 적용된 비선형 예측기법으로는 부분근사화 기법을 이용하였다. 카오스 특성 분석을 통해, 이론적 카오스 시계열과 Idaho주 Bear강의 일유출량 시계열 자료 모두에서 카오스 특성이 나타남을 알 수 있었다. 200일에 대한 1, 3, 5일 예측 결과, 가역접근법이 표준접근법에 비해 우수함을 알 수 있었다.

  • Generally, series reactor is connected to the power capacitor in series to attenuate the distortion of voltage waveform and to reduce an inrush current of power capacitor. Also, harmonic current of power capacitor is highly dependent on the series reactor because it is operated with the power capacitor as a passive filter against nonlinear loads. In this paper, harmonic current of power capacitor from nonlinear loads is analyzed by the computer simulation and is experimentally verified.

심전도의 비선형적 특성 분석에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Anlaysis of Nonlinear Characteristics of ECG.)

  • It has been shown that many of physiological systems have nonlinear dynamics. The evidences of these nonlinear behaviors make us analyze physiological systems in the new viewpoint. And, some of these nonlinear dynamics can be represented by chaotic behaviors, which is studied by several methods-correlation dimension, return map, power spectrum analysis, etc. This study is on the analysis of nonlinear characteristics of ECG. After data have been acquired from 20 children (10-13 years old), and 30 students (20-24 years old). We have calculated parameters HR, PR, VAT, TD, TRD, TPD from data, and estimated correlation dimension, return map, power spectrum, time series. Results show the nonlinear and chaotic characteristics of ECG.

뇌 신호원의 시계열 추출 및 인과성 분석에 있어서 ICA 기반 접근법과 MUSIC 기반 접근법의 성능 비교 및 문제점 진단 (Comparison of ICA-based and MUSIC-based Approaches Used for the Extraction of Source Time Series and Causality Analysis)

  • Recently, causality analysis of source time series extracted from EEG or MEG signals is becoming of great importance in human brain mapping studies and noninvasive diagnosis of various brain diseases. Two approaches have been widely used for the analyses: one is independent component analysis (ICA), and the other is multiple signal classification (MUSIC). To the best of our knowledge, however, any comparison studies to reveal the difference of the two approaches have not been reported. In the present study, we compared the performance of the two different techniques, ICA and MUSIC, especially focusing on how accurately they can estimate and separate various brain electrical signals such as linear, nonlinear, and chaotic signals without a priori knowledge. Results of the realistic simulation studies, adopting directed transfer function (DTF) and Granger causality (GC) as measures of the accurate extraction of source time series, demonstrated that the MUSIC-based approach is more reliable than the ICA-based approach.
