  • Dispersion management (DM), optical phase conjugation (OPC), and the combination of DM and OPC are promising techniques to compensate for optical signal distortion due to group velocity dispersion and nonlinear Kerr effects. The system performance improvement in DM links combined with OPC has been reported; however, the fixed residual dispersion per span (RDPS) usually used in these links restricts the flexibility of link configuration. Thus, in this paper, a flexible optical link configuration with artificially distributed single-mode fiber (SMF) lengths and RDPS in the combination of DM and OPC is proposed. Simulation results show that the best artificial distribution pattern is the gradually descending distribution of SMF lengths and the gradually ascending distribution of RDPS, as the number of fiber spans is increased, regardless of the average RDPS, the optimal net residual dispersion, and the dispersion coefficient of the dispersion compensating fiber.

  • A harmonically mode-locked fiber ring laser cavlty was theoretically analyzed. The measured charactenstlcs of a 10 GHz erbium-doped fiber ring laser were used as a basis of the theoretical analysis. From the nonlinear Schroedinger equation of an actively mode-locked erblUm-doped fiber laser. the effects of the components inside the laser cavity have been analyzed includmg nonlinear effects from group-velocity dispersion (GVD) and self-phase modulation (SPM). Usmg the analysls. we have designed a laser cavity with minimum pulsewidth and chirp by changing the intracavity optical intensity and the bandwidth of the filter. In the new design, the chirp i, reduced by 2 times and the pulsewidth by 2A times. compared to the laser used in the experiment. iment.

  • We investigate the effect of resonantly excited excitons on the optical-absorption of the n=1hh and n=2hh exciton resonances in GaAs quantum wells. Under quasistationary excitation condition using the pump and probe beam at tow temperature, we report the first observation of long range Coulomb screening by two dimensional exciton-exciton interaction, and discriminate unambiguously exciton bleaching between by long range Coulomb screening and the Pauli exclusion principle. • In this paper the effect of chaos induced instability in Brillouin-active fiber-ring sensor is described. The inherent optical feedback by the backscattered Stokes wave in optical fiber leads to instabilities in the form of optical chaos. The paradigm of optical chaos in fiber serves as a test for fundamental study of chaos and its suppression and exploitation in practical application in communication and sensing. At weak power, the nature of the Brillouin instability can occur at before threshold. At strong power, the temporal evolution above threshold is periodic and at higher intensity can become chaotic. The threshold for the Brillouin instability in fiber-ring sensor is much lower than the threshold of the normal Brillouin instability process.

  • We demonstrate parametric resonance in a magneto-optical trap. When we modulate the intensity of the cooling laser at about twice the resonant frequency of the trap, the atoms in the trap are divided into two parts and oscillate with 180 degree phase difference with the finite length due to nonlinearity of the trap potential. These are the effects of general nonlinear dynamics, called the Hopf bifurcation, or limit cycle motion. The amplitude and the phase of the oscillations are measured and compared with the theoretical calculations based on simple Doppler cooling theory. The experimental results are in excellent agreement with the simulation results based on the simple Doppler cooling theory.

  • The effects of the moisture and thermal annealing on CLBO crystal have been investigated. CLBO has hydrated at high humidity condition, resulting in 5B$_2$O$_3$$.$Cs$_2$O$.$8H$_2$O. The surface hydration seems to induce the cracking and the refractive index change in CLBO. The thermal annealing is effective to restore the changed index.

  • The effects of dispersion coefficient of dispersion compensating fiber (DCF) and residual dispersion per span (RDPS) on in the dispersion managed optical links for compensating the distorted 960 Gbps wavelength division multiplexd (WDM) signals due to group velocity dispersion (GVD) and optical nonlinear effects of single mode fiber (SMF) are investigated. It is confirmed that optimal net residual dispersion (NRD), which greatly affects compensating for optical signals, should be induced under the large launch power condition, irrelevant on the considered dispersion coefficient of DCF and RDPS. It is also confirmed that system performances are greatly improved by selecting the very small RDPS and very large dispersion coefficient of DCF.

  • A numerical analysis based on the nonlinear Schroedinger equation is presented to analyze the propagation stability of the average soliton in a simple nonlinear amplifying loop mirror. The ratio of amplification period to soliton period and the length fraction of the erbium-doped fiber in the loop are varied to investigate their effects on the soliton stability. It is observed that stable soliton propagation is obtained even when the amplification period is only slightly shorter than the soliton period when the length fraction of the erbium-doped fiber in the loop is small, which is different from the previously published condition for stable average soliton propagation.

  • Spatial and temporal dynamics arising in a photorefractive crystal(BaTiO3) during the process of double phase conjugation was studied experimentally. We studied the dynamical effects caused by the buildup of the diffraction grating and turn on of phase conjugated beams, as well as the spatial effects caused by the finite transverse coupling of beams and the propagation direction of beams. We observed conical emission in DPCM. We believe that various temporal and spatial instabilities are due to movement of the nonlinear grating. For a real beam coupling and constructive interaction of interference fringes in the crystal, we observed steady, periodic, irregular temporal behavior. And, by the calculation of the correlation index, we found that the spatial correlation decreased as the transverse interaction region was increased.
