This paper presents the numerical algorithm that can obtain the surface configuration of the magnetic fluid seals. The magnetic field is computed by nonlinear finite element method considering the saturation of magnetic fluid and pole piece. The surface equilibrium condition in ferrohydrodynamics are used in algorithm. The influence of the surface configuration on the sealed pressure due to the magnetic, centrifugal and gravitational forces is analyzed and compared with other experimental results.

As a new control strategy, the Nonlinear PID (NLPID) controller has been introduced successfully in power systems. The controller is free of planting model groundwork during the design procedure and is therefore able to be achieved quite simply. In this paper, a nonlinear PID controller used for a superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) unit connected to a power system is proposed. The purpose of designing such a controller is to improve the stability of the power system in a relatively wide operation range. The design procedure takes into account the active and reactive power cooperative control scheme as well as the simple structure so as to be more apt to practical utilization. Simulation is carried out to investigate the performance of the proposed controller in a high order nonlinear power system model under the. MATLAB environment. The results show satisfactory performance and good robustness of the controller. The feasibility of the controller is testified as well.
The nonlinear formulation using the principle of virtual work-energy for free vibration of a large-sag extensible catenary riser in two dimensions is presented in this paper. A support at one end is hinged and the other is a free-sliding roller in the horizontal direction. The catenary riser has a large-sag configuration in the static equilibrium state and is assumed to displace with large amplitude to the motion state. The total virtual work of the catenary riser system involves the virtual strain energy due to bending, the virtual strain energy due to axial deformation, the virtual work done by the effective weight, and the inertia forces. The nonlinear equations of motion for two-dimensional free vibration in the Cartesian coordinate system is developed based on the difference between the Euler's equations in the static state and the displaced state. The linear and nonlinear stiffness matrices of the catenary riser are obtained and the eigenvalue problem is solved using the Galerkin finite element procedure. The natural frequencies and mode shapes are obtained. The results are validated with regard to the reference research addressing the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed nonlinear formulation. The numerical results for free vibration and the effect of the nonlinear behavior for catenary riser are presented.

This paper was mainly concentrated On the structural analysis of the cable-stayed bridges through the linear and nonlinear analysis method. And also this compares and analyses the characteristics of the two typical system, the radiating and harp arrangement. As a result, The radiating configuration is stiffer than the harp configuration in many respects Besides, the difference between the linear and nonlinear analysis method is proportional to the sag. But as the cable of the cable-stayed bridges is tauter, the difference is lesser.

In this paper, we consider an optimal routing problem when point-to-point and point-to-multipoint connection traffics are offered in an ATM network. We propose a mathematical model for cost-minimizing configuration of a logical network for a given ATM-based BISDN. Our model is essentially identical to the previous one proposed by Kim(Kim, 1996) which finds a virtual-path configuration where the relevant gains obtainable from the ATM technology such as the statistical multiplexing gain and the switching/control cost-saving gain are optimally traded-off. Unlike the Kim's model, however, ours explicitly considers the VP's QoS(Quality of Service) for more efficient utilization of bandwidth. The problem is a large-scale, nonlinear, and mixed-integer problem. The proposed algorithm is based on the local linearization of equivalent-capacity functions and the relaxation of link capacity constraints. As a result, the problem can be decomposed into moderate-sized shortest path problems, Steiner arborescence problems, and LPs. This fact renders our algorithm a lot faster than the previous nonlinear programming algorithm while the solution quality is maintained, hence application to large-scale network problems.

Recently, the space truss has been attracted by many designers because of their ability to support significant loads with a minimum material. And it is relatively flexible to design the configuration of structures. This paper presents a volume optimization for the space truss on the basis of result evaluated from nonlinear analysis. The optimization of the truss is done by nonlinear optimum GINO(General Interactive Nonlinear Optimizer) program. The objective function considered is the volume of the steel bars. The constraints for optimum design are the design limits, such as the axial force strength, maximum slenderness, minimum thickness, allowable deflection and ratio of the external diameter to thickness of the circular tube bars.
With an aim to assess the wind damage to urban trees in more realistic conditions, the nonlinear dynamics of structured trees subjected to strong winds with different levels is investigated in the present paper. For the logical treatment of dynamical behavior of trees, material nonlinearities of green wood associated with tree biomechanics and geometric nonlinearity of tree configuration are included. Applying simulated fluctuating wind velocity to the numerical model, the dynamical behavior of the structured tree is explored. A comparative study against the linear dynamics analysis usually involved in the previous researches is carried out. The failure wind velocity of urban trees is then defined, whereby the failure percentages of the tree components are exposed. Numerical investigations reveal that the nonlinear dynamics analysis of urban trees results in a more accurate solution of wind-induced response than the classical linear dynamics analysis, where the nonlinear effect of the tree behavior gives rise to be strengthened as increasing of the levels of wind velocity, i.e., the amplitude of 10-min mean wind velocity. The study of relationship between the failure percentage and the failure wind velocity provides a new perspective towards the vulnerability assessment of urban trees likely to fail due to wind actions, which is potential to link with the practical engineering.
The orientation and deformation of polymer chains in a confined channel flow has been investigated. The polymer chain was modeled as a Finitely Extensible Nonlinear Elastic (FENE) dumbbell. The Brownian configuration field method was extended to take the interaction between the flow and local chain dynamics into account. Drag and Brownian forces were treated as anisotropic in order to reflect the influence of the wall in the confined flow. Both Poiseuille flow and 4 : 1 contraction flow were considered. Of particular interest was molecular tumbling of polymer chains near the wall. It was strongly influenced by anisotropic drag and high shear close to the wall. We discussed the mechanism of this particular behavior in terms of the governing forces. The dumbbell configuration was determined not only by the wall interaction but also by the flow type of the geometric origin. The effect of extensional flow on dumbbell configuration was also discussed by comparing with the Poiseuille flow.
In this paper, a finite viscoelastic continuum model for rubber and its finite element analysis are presented. This finite viscoelatic model based on continuum mechanics is an extended model of Johnson and Wuigley's 1-D model. In this extended model, continuum based kinematic measures are rigorously defied and by using this kinematic measures, elastic stage law and flow rule are introduced. In kinematics, three configuration are introduced. In kinematics, three configuration are introduced. They are reference, current and virtual visco configurations. In elastic state law, it is assumed that at a certain time, there exists an elastic potential which describes the recoverable elastic energy. From this elastic potential, elastic state law is derived. The proposed flow rule is based on phenomenological observation. The flow rule gives precise relaxation response. In finite element approximation, mixed Lagrangian description is used, where total and similar method of updated Lagrangian descriptions are used together. This approach reduces the numerical job and gives simple nonlinear syatem of equations. To satisfy the incompressible condition, penalty-type modified Mooney-Rivlin energy function is adopted. By this method nearly incompressible condition is obtain the virtual visco configuration. For verification, uniaxial stretch tests are simulated for various stretch rates. The simulated results show good agreement with experiments. As a practical experiments. As a preactical example, pressurized rubber plate is simulated. The result shows finite viscoelastic effects clearly.
This paper presents the effect of axial stretching on large amplitude free vibration of an extensible suspended cable supported at the same level. The model formulation developed in this study is based on the virtual work-energy functional of cables which involves strain energy due to axial stretching and work done by external forces. The difference in the Euler equations between equilibrium and motion states is considered. The resulting equations govern the horizontal and vertical motion of the cables, and are coupled and highly nonlinear. The solution for the nonlinear static equilibrium configuration is determined by the shooting method while the solution for the large amplitude free vibration is obtained by using the second-order central finite difference scheme with time integration. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the vibration behaviour of extensible suspended cables.
