  • Intermodal freight transportation is defined as the movement of freight from origins to destinations by two or more transportation modes. When implemented in hub networks, it could enhance the efficiency of the networks because consolidated flows are transported by more suitable modes and technologies. In spite of this advantage, the intermodal hub network design problem has received limited attention in the literature partly because of the complex nature of the problem. This paper aims to develop an optimization model for designing intermodal hub networks with sin91e allocation strategy. The model takes into account various cost components of intermodal hub networks including transportation, stationary inventory, and service delay costs. Moreover, using transport frequency variables, it is capable of endogenously determining the transportation economies of scale achieved by consolidation of flows. As such, the model is able to realistically represent the characteristics of intermodal hub networks in practice. Since the model Is a complicated nonlinear integer programming problem, we perform model simplification based on the analytical study of the model, which could facilitate the development of solution algorithms in the future. We expect that this study contributes to the design of intermodal hub networks as well as to the assessment of existing logistics systems.

  • In the past, meta-heuristic optimization algorithms were developed to solve the problems caused by complex nonlinearities occurring in natural phenomena, and various studies have been conducted to examine the applicability of the developed algorithms. The self-adaptive vision correction algorithm (SAVCA) showed excellent performance in mathematics problems, but it did not apply to complex engineering problems. Therefore, it is necessary to review the application process of the SAVCA. The SAVCA, which was recently developed and showed excellent performance, was applied to the advanced Muskingum flood routing model (ANLMM-L) to examine the application and application process. First, initial solutions were generated by the SAVCA, and the fitness was then calculated by ANLMM-L. The new value selected by a local and global search was put into the SAVCA. A new solution was generated, and ANLMM-L was applied again to calculate the fitness. The final calculation was conducted by comparing and improving the results of the new solution and existing solutions. The sum of squares (SSQ) was used to calculate the error between the observed and calculated runoff, and the applied results were compared with the current models. SAVCA, which showed excellent performance in the Muskingum flood routing model, is expected to show excellent performance in a range of engineering problems.

  • In developing modern aircraft, the reconfiguration control that can improve the safety and the survivability against the unexpected failure by partitioning control surfaces into several parts has been actively studied. This paper deals with the reconfiguration control using model predictive control method considering the saturation of control surfaces under the control surface failure. Linearized aircraft model at trim condition is used as the internal model of model predictive control. We propose the controller that performs optimization using LMI (linear matrix inequalities) based semi-definite programming in case that control surface saturation occurs, otherwise, uses analytic solution of the model predictive control. The performance of the proposed control method is evaluated by nonlinear simulation under the flight scenario of control surface failure.

  • The cables in a cable-stayed bridge are critical load-carrying parts. The potential damage to cables should be identified early to prevent disasters. In this study, an efficient deep learning model is proposed for the damage identification of cables using both a multi-layer perceptron (MLP) and a graph neural network (GNN). Datasets are first generated using the practical advanced analysis program (PAAP), which is a robust program for modeling and analyzing bridge structures with low computational costs. The model based on the MLP and GNN can capture complex nonlinear correlations between the vibration characteristics in the input data and the cable system damage in the output data. Multiple hidden layers with an activation function are used in the MLP to expand the original input vector of the limited measurement data to obtain a complete output data vector that preserves sufficient information for constructing the graph in the GNN. Using the gated recurrent unit and set2set model, the GNN maps the formed graph feature to the output cable damage through several updating times and provides the damage results to both the classification and regression outputs. The model is fine-tuned with the original input data using Adam optimization for the final objective function. A case study of an actual cable-stayed bridge was considered to evaluate the model performance. The results demonstrate that the proposed model provides high accuracy (over 90%) in classification and satisfactory correlation coefficients (over 0.98) in regression and is a robust approach to obtain effective identification results with a limited quantity of input data.

  • This paper presents a convenient method to estimate the internal parameters of plenoptic camera using CCD(charge-coupled device) camera model. The images used for plenoptic camera calibration generally use the checkerboard pattern used in CCD camera calibration. Based on the CCD camera model, the determinant of the plenoptic camera model can be derived through the relationship with the plenoptic camera model. We formulate four equations that express the focal length, the principal point, the baseline, and distance between the virtual camera and the object. By performing a nonlinear optimization technique, we solve the equations to estimate the parameters. We compare the estimation results with the actual parameters and evaluate the reprojection error. Experimental results show that the MSE(mean square error) is 0.309 and estimation values are very close to actual values.

  • In Korea, more than 60% of the whole lands are mountainous area. Since many decades ago, hydroelectric power plants have been constructed and eco-friendly energy has been produced. Hydropower can cope with the rapidly changing energy supply and demand, and produce eco-friendly energy. However, when the reservoir is built, it is often inevitable to damage the environment due to construction of large structure. In this study, the optimal reservoir operation model was developed to maximize power generation by monthly operation for long-term operation planning. The dam operation model was developed using the linear programming which is widely used in the optimal resources allocation problems. And the reservoir operation model can establish monthly operation plan for 1 year. Linear programming requires both object function and constraints to be linear. However, since the power generation equation is nonlinear, it is linearized using the Taylor Expansion technique. The optimization results were compared with the 2009-2018 historical data of five hydropower reservoirs. As a result, the total optimal generation is about 10~37% higher than the historical generation.

  • A planning support system enhances our ability to use water capacity expansion as an urban growth management strategy. This paper reports the development of capacity expansion modeling of water supply as part of the continuing development of such a planning support system (PEGASUS: Planning Environment for Generation and Analysis of Spatial Urban Systems) to incorporate water supply, This system is designed from the understanding that land use and development drive the demand for infrastructure and infrastructure can have a significant influence on the ways in which land is developed and used. Capacity expansion Problems of water supply can be solved in two ways: 1) optimal control theory, and 2) mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP). Each method has its strengths and weaknesses. In this study the MINLP approach is used because of its strength of determining expansion sizing and timing simultaneously. A dynamic network optimization model and a water-distribution network analysis model can address the dynamic interdependence between water planning and land use planning. While the water-distribution network analysis model evaluates the performance of generated networks over time, the dynamic optimization model chooses alternatives to meet expanding water needs. In addition, the user and capacity expansion modeling-to-generate-alternatives (MGA) can generate alternatives. A cost benefit analysis module using a normalization technique helps in choosing the most economical among those alternatives. GIS provide a tool for estimating the volume of demanded water and showing results of the capacity expansion model.

  • In this study, a continuous optimum design model with its application program for plane steel frame structures developed. In the model, the sequential unconstrained minimization technique (SUMT) transforming the nonlinear optimization problem with multidesign variables and constraints into an unconstrained minimization problem and the refined plastic hinge analysis method as one of the most effective second-order inelastic analysis methods for steel frame structures were implemented. The total weight of a steel frame structure was taken as the objective function, and the AISC-LRFD code requirements for the local and member buckling, flexural strength, shear strength, axial strength and size of the cross-sectional shapes of members were used for the derivation of constraint equations. To verify the appropriateness of the present model, the optimum designs of serveral plane steel frame structures subject to vertical and horizontal loads were conducted.

  • The traditional fault diagnosis method for photovoltaic (PV) inverters has a difficult time meeting the requirements of the current complex systems. Its main weakness lies in the study of nonlinear systems. In addition, its diagnosis time is long and its accuracy is low. To solve these problems, a hidden Markov model (HMM) is used that has unique advantages in terms of its training model and its recognition for diagnosing faults. However, the initial value of the HMM has a great influence on the model, and it is possible to achieve a local minimum in the training process. Therefore, a genetic algorithm is used to optimize the initial value and to achieve global optimization. In this paper, the HMM is combined with a genetic algorithm (GHMM) for PV inverter fault diagnosis. First Matlab is used to implement the genetic algorithm and to determine the optimal HMM initial value. Then a Baum-Welch algorithm is used for iterative training. Finally, a Viterbi algorithm is used for fault identification. Experimental results show that the correct PV inverter fault recognition rate by the HMM is about 10% higher than that of traditional methods. Using the GHMM, the correct recognition rate is further increased by approximately 13%, and the diagnosis time is greatly reduced. Therefore, the GHMM is faster and more accurate in diagnosing PV inverter faults.

  • Although the accuracy of handwritten character recognition based on deep networks has been shown to be superior to that of the traditional method, the use of an overly deep network significantly increases time consumption during parameter training. For this reason, this paper took the training time and recognition accuracy into consideration and proposed a novel handwritten character recognition algorithm with newly designed network structure, which is based on an extended nonlinear kernel residual network. This network is a non-extremely deep network, and its main design is as follows:(1) Design of an unsupervised apriori algorithm for intra-class clustering, making the subsequent network training more pertinent; (2) presentation of an intermediate convolution model with a pre-processed width level of 2;(3) presentation of a composite residual structure that designs a multi-level quick link; and (4) addition of a Dropout layer after the parameter optimization. The algorithm shows superior results on MNIST and SVHN dataset, which are two character benchmark recognition datasets, and achieves better recognition accuracy and higher recognition efficiency than other deep structures with the same number of layers.
