  • The characteristic of load-distribution is investigated by using nonlinear analysis with a field loading test of existing bridge In this study, nonlinear load-distribution technique for quantitative analysis was adopted. The results were compared with linear solution technique with data from failure test at existing RCT-girder bridge and examine the adequacy of the failure mode. The results of this study showed that the linear solution technique and the proposed nonlinear solution technique agreed well in linear region but did not matched well in nonlinear region because of load-redistribution, and that the effect of load-redistribution was considered to analysis of nonlinear region by linear solution.

  • This paper presents a nonlinear modeling method for dynamic analysis of flexible structures undergoing overall motions that employs the mode approximation method. This method, different from the naive nonlinear method that approximates only Cartesian deformation variables, approximates not only deformation variables but also strain variables. Geometric constraint relations between the strain variables and the deformation variables are introduced and incorporated into the formulation. Two numerical examples are solved and the reliability and the accuracy of the proposed formulation are examined through the numerical study.

  • This paper describes a simple random signal generator employing by CMOS analog technology in current mode. The system is a nonlinear dynamical system described by a difference equation, such as x(t+1) = f(x(t)) , t = 0,1,2, ... , where f($.$) is a nonlinear function of x(f). The tent map is used as a nonlinear function to produce the random signals with the uniform distribution. The prototype is implemented by using transistor array devices fabricated in a mass product line. It can be easily realized on a chip. Uniform randomness of the signal is examined by the serial correlation test and the $\chi$2 test.

  • A nonlinear mathematical model of longitudinal combustion instability appropriate for ramjets and augmenters was developed based on modal analysis. The model was limited to a two-mode formulation. The associated differential equations were solved both analytically and numerically. The two-mode nonlinear model is capable of predicting the bootstrapping effect which characterizes nonlinear velocity-sensitive combustion response. Also, parametric studies were performed.

  • In tapping mode atomic force microscopy(TM-AFM). the vibro-contact response of a resonating tip is used to measure the nanoscale topology and other properties of a sample surface. However, the nonlinear tip-surface interact ions can affect the tip response and destabilize the tapping mode control. Especially it is difficult to obtain a good scanned image of high adhesion surfaces such as polymers and biomoleculars using conventional tapping mode control. In this study, theoretical and experimental investigations are made on the nonlinear dynamics and control of TM-AFM. To analyze the complex dynamics and control of the tapping tip, the classical contact models are adopted due to the surface adhesion. Also we report the surface adhesion is an additional important parameter to determine the control stability of TM-AFM. In addition, we prove that it is more adequate to use Johnson-Kendall-Roberts (JKR) contact model to obtain a reasonable tapping response in AFM for the soft and high adhesion samples.

  • Actuator failures and the failures of controlled objects are often considered together. To overcome this limitation, a class of sliding mode observers for the fault diagnosis of nonlinear systems is designed in this paper. Due to the influence of the sliding mode function, the control strategy and the residual change of the observer exhibit certain trends governed by specific relations. Therefore, according to the changes in the control strategy and the observer residuals, the sensor and actuator faults in nonlinear systems can be determined. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified based on simulations of a DC motor system.

  • This paper proposes a neural network(NN)-based adaptive sliding mode controller for discrete-time nonlinear systems. By using disturbance estimation technique, a sliding mode controller is designed, which forces the sliding variable to be zero. Then, NN compensator with hidden-layer-to-output-layer weight update rule is combined with sliding mode controller in order to reduce the error of the estimates of both disturbances and nonlinear functions. The whole closed loop system rejects disturbances excellently and is proved to be ultimately uniformly bounded(UUB) provided that certain conditions for design parameters are satisfied.

  • In this paper, a direct adaptive control, based on Lyapunov Function Candidate, is applied to a nonlinear Gunner's Primary Stabilized Head Mirror system to derive a parameter adaptation scheme; furthemore, a nonlinear sliding mode control, but also compensating the error in identification of the parameters which are even varying of have uncertain values. The performance of the adaptive controller is determined by the tracking ability to a desired model under some disturbances and the slowly varying parameters of the system. Both adaptive scheme and sliding mode play an important fole in the improvement of the nonlinear system control.

  • The high-frequency force-balance (HFFB) technique and its subsequent improvements are reviewed in this paper, including a discussion about nonlinear mode shape corrections, multi-force balance measurements, and using HFFB model to identify aeroelastic parameters. To apply the HFFB technique in engineering practice, various validation studies have been conducted. This paper presents the results from an analytical validation study for a simple building with nonlinear mode shapes, three experimental validation studies for more complicated buildings, and a field measurement comparison for a super-tall building in Hong Kong. The results of these validations confirm that the improved HFFB technique is generally adequate for engineering applications. Some technical limitations of HFFB are also discussed in this paper, especially for higher-order mode response that could be considerable for super tall buildings.
