  • In order to regulate the cutting force at a desired level during peripheral end milling processes a feedrate override Adaptive Control Constraint (ACC) system was developed. The feedrate override function was accomplished through a development of programmable machine controller (PMC) interface technique on the NC controller, Nonlinear model of the cutting process was linearized as an adaptive model with a time varying process parameter. An integral type estimator was introduced for on-line estimation of the cutting process parameter, Zero order hold digital control methodology which uses pole-assignment concept for tuning of PI controllers was applied for the ACC system. Performance of the ACC system wsa confirmed on the vertical machining center equipped with fanuc OMC through a large amount of experiment.

  • A p-version finite element model based on degenerate shell element is proposed for the analysis of orthotropic laminated plates. In the nonlinear formulation of the model, the total Lagrangian formulation is adopted with large deflection and moderate rotation being accounted for in the sense of von Karman hypothesis. The material model Is based on the Huber-Mises yield criterion and Prandtl-Reuss flow rule in accordance with the theory of strain hardening yield function, which is generalized for anisotropic materials by introducing the parameters of anisotropy. The model is also based on extension of equivalent-single layer laminate theory(ESL theory) with shear deformation, leading to continuous shear strain at the interface of two layers. The Integrals of Legendre Polynomials we used for shape functions with p-level varying from 1 to 10. Gauss-Lobatto numerical quadrature is used to calculate the stresses at the nodal points instead of Gauss points. The validity of the proposed p-version finite element model is demonstrated through several comparative points of view in terms of ultimate load, convergence characteristics, nonlinear effect, and shape of plastic zone

  • This study presents an analytical framework for estimating the thermo-mechanical behavior of a composite beam exposed to fire. The framework involves: a fire simulation from which the evolution of temperature on the structure surface is obtained; data transfer by an interface model, whereby the surface temperature is assigned to the finite element model of the structure for thermo-mechanical analysis; and nonlinear thermo-mechanical analysis for predicting the structural response under high temperatures. We use a plastic-damage model for calculating the response of concrete slabs, and propose a method to determine the stiffness degradation parameter of the plastic-damage model by a nonlinear regression of concrete cylinder test data. To validate simulation results, structural fire experiments have been performed on a real-scale steel-concrete composite beam using the fire load prescribed by ASTM E119 standard fire curve. The calculated evolution of deflection at the center of the beam shows good agreement with experimental results. The local test results as well as the effective plastic strain distribution and section rotation of the composite beam at elevated temperatures are also investigated.

  • The paper presents a review of the application of the newly proposed mixed finite element model for seismic simulation of different types of composite frame structures. To evaluate the performance of the element, a comparison with displacement-based and force-based models is conducted. The study revealed that the mixed model is superior to the others in terms of both speed of convergence and numerical stability, and is therefore considered the most practical approach for modeling of composite structures. In this model, the element is derived using independent force and displacement shape functions. The nonlinear response of the frame element is based on the section discretization into fibers with uniaxial material models. The interfacial behavior is modeled using an inelastic interface element. Numerical examples to clarify the advantages of the model are presented for the following structural applications: anchored reinforcing bar problems, composite steel-concrete girders with deformable shear connectors, beam on elastic foundation elements, R/C girders strengthened with FRP sheets, R/C beam-columns with bond-slip, and prestressed concrete girders. These studies confirmed that the model represents a major advancement over existing elements in simulating the inelastic behavior of composite structures.

  • There are two types of nonlinear analysis methods for building frameworks depending on the method of modeling the plastification of members including lumped plasticity and distributed plasticity. The lumped plasticity method assumes that plasticity is concentrated at a zero-length plastic hinge section at the ends of the elements. The distributed plasticity method discretizes the structural members into many line segments, and further subdivides the cross-section of each segment into a number of finite elements. When a reinforced concrete member experiences inelastic deformations, cracks tend to spread form the joint interface resulting in a curvature distribution. The program IDARC includes a spread plasticity formulation to capture the variation of the section flexibility, and combine them to determine the element stiffness matrix. In this formulation, the flexibility distribution in the structural elements is assumed to be the linear. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the accuracy of linear flexibility distribution assumed in the spread inelasticity model. For this purpose, nonlinear analysis of two reinforced concrete frames is carried out and the linear flexibility models used in the elements are compared with the real ones. It is shown that the linear flexibility distribution is incorrect assumption in cases of significant gravity load effects and can be lead to incorrect nonlinear responses in some situations.

  • The performance of a stream water quality analysis model depends upon many factors attributed to the geological characteristics of a watershed as well as the distribution behaviors of pollutant itself on a surface of watershed. Because the model run has to import the pollution load from the watershed as a boundary condition along an interface between a stream water body and a watershed, it has been used to introduce a pollution delivery coefficient to behalf of the boundary condition of load importation. Although a nonlinear regression model (NRM) was developed to cope with the limitation of a conventional empirical way, this an up-to-date study has also a limitation that it can't be applied where the pollution load washed off (assumed at a source) is less than that delivered (observed) in a stream. The objective of this study is to identify what causes the limitation of NRM and to suggest how we can purify the process to evaluate a pollution delivery coefficient using many field observed cases. As a major result, it was found what causes the pollution load delivered to becomes bigger than that assumed at the source. In addition, the pollution load discharged to a stream water body from a specific watershed was calculated more accurately.

  • Controlling superheat of indoor units associated with a multi-type heat pump is one of difficult tasks to be addressed. This study suggests a dynamic model of an evaporator based on heat and mass balance. Thermodynamic properties are calculated by a commercial software, Refprop. The model is programmed in MFC Visual C++ for controller interface in real-time mode. The simulation results shows that PI control works for a narrow range of superheat. Beyond the range, the temperature behavior of the refrigerant is quite nonlinear mainly due to phase change. Thus, it is concluded that PI control of superheat has to be supplemented by nonlinear control ideas to avoid saturation and excessive superheat.

  • Dynamic behaviors of the contact surface between ball and raceway in a guideway mechanism vary with the applied loads and hence affect the mechanical responses of machine tools. The study aims to investigate the nonlinear characteristics of dynamic behaviors at the rolling contact interface in linear guideway mechanisms. Firstly, analytical method was introduced to understand the contact behaviors based on Hertz contact theory in a point-to-point way. Then, the finite element approach with a three-dimensional surface-to-surface contact model and appropriate contact stiffness was developed to study the dynamic characteristics of such linear guideways. Finally, experiments with modal test were conducted to verify the significance of both the analytical and the numerical results. Results told that the finite element approach may provide significant predictions. The study results also concluded that the current nonlinear models based on Hertz's contact theory may accurately describe the contact characteristic of a linear guideway mechanism. In the modal analysis, it was told that the natural frequencies vary a little with different loading conditions; however, the mode shapes are changed obviously with the magnitude of applied loads. Therefore, the stiffness of contact interface needs to be properly adjusted during simulation which may affect the dynamic characteristics of the machine tools.

  • Steel fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC) is known as one of the efficient modern composites that can greatly enhance the material performance of cracked concrete in tension. Such improved tensile resistance mechanism at crack interfaces in SFRC members can be heavily influenced by methodologies of treatments of crack direction. While most existing studies have focused on developing the numerical analysis model with the rotating-angle theory, there are only few studies on finite element analysis models with the fixed-angle model approach. According to many existing experimental studies, the direction of principal stress rotated after the formation of initial fixed-cracks, but it was also observed that new cracks with completely different angles relative to the initial crack direction very rarely occurred. Therefore, this study introduced the direct tension force transfer model (DTFTM), in which tensile resistance of the fibers at the crack interface can be easily estimated, to the nonlinear finite element analysis algorithm with the fixed-angle theory, and the proposed model was also verified by comparing the analysis results to the SFRC shear panel test results. The secant modulus method adopted in this study for iterative calculations in nonlinear finite element analysis showed highly stable and fast convergence capability when it was applied to the fixed-angle theory. The deviation angle between the principal stress direction and the fixed-crack direction significantly increased as the tensile stresses in the steel fibers at crack interfaces increased, which implies that the deviation angle is very important in the estimation of the shear behavior of SFRC members.

  • Seismic damages that occurred by the effects of epicenter distance of the earthquake are one of the most important problems for the earthquake engineering. In this study, it is aimed to examine the nonlinear seismic behaviors of concrete gravity (CG) dams considering various epicenter distances. For this purpose, Boyabat CG dam that is one of the biggest concrete gravity dams in Turkey is selected as a numerical application. FLAC3D software based on finite difference method is used for modelling and analyzing of the dam. Drucker-Prager nonlinear material model is used for the concrete body and Mohr-Coulomb nonlinear material model is taken into account for the foundation. Special interface elements are used between dam body and foundation to represent interaction condition. Free-field and quiet non-reflecting boundary conditions are utilized for the main surfaces of 3D model. Total 5 various epicenter distances of 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake are considered in 3D earthquake analyses and these distances are 5 km, 11 km, 24 km, 85 km and 93 km, respectively. According to 3D seismic results, x-y-z displacements, principal stresses and shear strain failures of the dam are evaluated in detail. It is clearly seen from this study that the nonlinear seismic behaviors of the CG dams change depending to epicenter distance of the earthquake. Thus, it is clearly recommended in this study that when a CG dam is modelled or analyzed, distance of the earthquake fault to the dam should be strongly examined in detail. Otherwise, earthquake damages can be occurred in the concrete dam body by the effects of seismic loads.
