A nonlinear model for time-step analysis of bridges subjected to two orthogonal horizontal components of earthquake motions was developed. The focus of the study was on elastomeric isolators with or without lead cores. The hysteretic behavior of the isolators, the columns, abutments, and shear keys was taken into account. The nonlinear analysis showed that, contrary to linear theory prediction, the use of isolators does not necessarily increase the displacement of the superstructure. Furthermore, it was shown that properly designed isolators can reduce the ductility demand in RC bridge columns substantially.

A computer program named \"NLDA-BIS\", which runs under the MATLAB environment, is developed fur seismic response analysis of base isolated structures. This program can explicitly model the various nonlinear isolation elements such as elastomeric bearings, sliding bearings and general viscous dampers, and so on. Newmark'\`s constant average acceleration method fur calculating the responses in time domain and the iterative pseudo-force method for treating the nonlinear isolation forces are adopted. For capturing the hysteretic behavior of isolation elements, the modified Wen's equations are adopted and solved by the numerical differentiation formula method. To verify the validity of the developed program, the seismic responses of a six-story reinforced concrete base isolated structure are calculated and compared with results obtained by the program \"3D-BASIS\" developed at the State University of New York at Buffalo which is the most widely used code far analyzing isolated structures today.ed structures today.

Lap splices were located in the plastic hinge region of most bridge piers that were constructed before the adoption of the seismic design provision of Korea Highway Design Specification on 1992. Lap splicing is also permitted if hoops or spiral reinforcement are provided over the lap length in the current seismic design provision. But sudden brittle failure of lap splices may occur under inelastic cyclic loading. The purpose of this study is the analytical prediction of nonlinear hysteretic behavior and ductility capacity of reinforced concrete bridge piers with lap splices under cyclic loading. For this purpose, a nonlinear analysis program, RCAHEST(Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology) is used. Lap spliced bar element is developed to predict behaviors of lap spliced bar. Maximum bar stress and slip of lap spliced bar is considered.

In this paper a systematic numerical analysis is performed to obtain the energy dissipation and re-centering capacities of diagonal steel braced frames subjected to cyclic loading. This diagonal steel bracing systems are fabricated with super-elastic SMA (Shape Memory Alloy) braces in order to develop a recentering seismic resistance system without residual deformation. The three-dimensional nonlinear finite element models are constructed to investigate the horizontal stiffness, drifts and failure modes of the re-centering bracing systems.

In this study straightforward design procedure for unbond brace hysteretic dampers is developed. The required amount of equivalent damping to satisfy given performance acceptance criteria is obtained conveniently based on the capacity spectrum method without carrying out time-consuming nonlinear dynamic time history analysis. Then the size of the unbend braces is determined from the required equivalent damping. Parametric study is performed for the design variables such as natural period, yield strength, the stiffness after the first yield, yield stress of the unbond brace.

Dynamic analyses are performed for the wood structure modeled as a SDOF hysteretic system. The hysteresis model presented is a modified version of Takeda model. The comparison between the results of numerical simulation and the experimental results show good agreements in overall tendencies. The response of wood structure subjected to artificially generated earthquakes considering site effects is studied. It appears that the response is very strongly influenced by the intensity and the frequency contents of the ground motion.

This paper presents a hysteretic damage model for reinforced concrete (RC) joints that explicitly accounts for the bond-slip between the reinforcing bars and the surrounding concrete. A frame element whose displacement fields for the concrete and the reinforcing bars are different to permit slip is developed. From the fiber section concept, compatibility equations for concrete, rebar, and bond are defined. Modification of the hysteretic stress-strain curve of steel is conducted for partial unloading and reloading conditions. Local bond stress-slip relations for monotonic loads are updated at each slip reversal according to the damage factor. The numerical applications of the reinforcing bar embedded in the confined concrete block, the RC column anchored in the foundation, and the RC beam-column subassemblage validate the model accuracy and show how including the effects of bond-slip leads to a good assessment of the amount of energy dissipation during loading histories.

In equivalent static nonlinear analysis and in energy-based design, the structures are generally transformed into an equivalent SDOF system. In this study the seismic energy demands in multi story structures, such as three-, eight-, and twenty-story steel moment-resisting frames(MRF), buckling restrained braced frames(BRBF) and a damage tolerant braced frame(DTBF), are compared with those of equivalent single degree of freedom(ESDOF) systems. Sixty earthquake ground motions recorded In different soil conditions, which are soft rock, soft soil, and neat fault, were used to compute the input and hysteretic energy demands in model structures. In case the modal mass coefficient is less than 0.8, the effects of higher modes are considered in the process of converting into ESDOF According to the analysis results, the hysteretic and input energies obtained from 3 story and 8 story MRF and DTBF agreed well with the results from analysis of equivalent SDOF systems. However in the 20 story BRBF the results from ESDOF underestimated those obtained from the original structures.

This paper investigates the ductility demands of steel frames equipped with self-centring fuses under near-fault earthquake motions considering multiple yielding stages. The study is commenced by verifying a trilinear self-centring hysteretic model accounting for multiple yielding stages of steel frames equipped with self-centring fuses. Then, the seismic response of single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) systems following the validated trilinear self-centring hysteretic law is examined by a parametric study using a near-fault earthquake ground motion database composed of 200 earthquake records as input excitations. Based on a statistical investigation of more than fifty-two (52) million inelastic spectral analyses, the effect of the post-yield stiffness ratios, energy dissipation coefficient and yielding displacement ratio on the mean ductility demand of the system is examined in detail. The analysis results indicate that the increase of post-yield stiffness ratios, energy dissipation coefficient and yielding displacement ratio reduces the ductility demands of the self-centring oscillators responding in multiple yielding stages. A set of empirical expressions for quantifying the ductility demands of trilinear self-centring hysteretic oscillators are developed using nonlinear regression analysis of the analysis result database. The proposed regression model may offer a practical tool for designers to estimate the ductility demand of a low-to-medium rise self-centring steel frame equipped with self-centring fuses progressing in the ultimate stage under near-fault earthquake motions in design and evaluation.
Nonlinear dynamic analysis of a reinforced concrete (RC) frame under earthquake loading is performed in this paper on the basis of a hysteretic moment-curvature relation. Unlike previous analytical moment-curvature relations which take into account the flexural deformation only with the perfect-bond assumption, by introducing an equivalent flexural stiffness, the proposed relation considers the rigid-body-motion due to anchorage slip at the fixed end, which accounts for more than 50% of the total deformation. The advantage of the proposed relation, compared with both the layered section approach and the multi-component model, may be the ease of its application to a complex structure composed of many elements and on the reduction in calculation time and memory space. Describing the structural response more exactly becomes possible through the use of curved unloading and reloading branches inferred from the stress-strain relation of steel and consideration of the pinching effect caused by axial force. Finally, the applicability of the proposed model to the nonlinear dynamic analysis of RC structures is established through correlation studies between analytical and experimental results.
