Traditional nonlinear static and dynamic analyses do not accurately estimate the energy dissipation capacity of reinforced concrete structure. Recently, simple equations which can accurately calculate the energy dissipation capacity of flexure-dominated RC members, were developed in the companion study. In the present study, nonlinear static and dynamic analytical methods improved using the energy-evaluation method were developed. For nonlinear static analysis, the Capacity Spectrum Method was improved by using the energy-spectrum curve newly developed. For nonlinear dynamic analysis, a simplified energy-based cyclic model of reinforced concrete member was developed. Unlike the existing cyclic models which are the stiffness-based models, the proposed cyclic model can accurately estimate the energy dissipating during complete load-cycles. The procedure of the proposed methods was established and the computer program incorporating the analytical method was developed. The proposed analytical methods can estimate accurately the energy dissipation capacity varying with the design parameters such as shape of cross-section, reinforcement ratio and arrangement, and can address the effect of the energy dissipation capacity on the structural performance under earthquake load.

The need of ultra-precision machine tools, which manufacture and machine the high precision parts used in computers, semi-conductors and other precision machines, has been increased over years. Therefore it is important to design the driving parts, which affect significantly on their performances. In this paper, the dynamic analyses on the belt-driven system were explored. Relation of the acoustical natural frequency and the tension of belt was derived and presented through experiments. Also, while the dynamic loads on motor system were changed, dynamic deflections were calculated through finite element analysis. Nonlinear characteristics of the bearings having an effect on the dynamic performance were studied and the belt connecting the motor (driving part) to spindle of a machine tool (driven part) was modeled as truss and beam elements fur simulations under various conditions, and a beam element model was verified to be more useful.

This paper aims to develop response modification factors for stiffness degrading structures by incorporating soil-structure interaction effects. A comprehensive parametric study is conducted to investigate the effects of key SSI parameters, natural period of vibration, ductility demand and hysteretic behavior on the response modification factor of soil-structure systems. The nonlinear dynamic response of 6300 soil-structure systems are studied under two ensembles of accelograms including 20 recorded and 7 synthetic ground motions. It is concluded that neglecting the stiffness degradation of structures can results in up to 22% underestimation of inelastic strength demands in soil-structure systems, leading to an unexpected high level of ductility demand in the structures located on soft soil. Nonlinear regression analyses are then performed to derive a simplified expression for estimating ductility-dependent response modification factors for stiffness degrading soil-structure systems. The adequacy of the proposed expression is investigated through sensitivity analyses on nonlinear soil-structure systems under seven synthetic spectrum compatible earthquake ground motions. A good agreement is observed between the results of the predicted and the target ductility demands, demonstrating the adequacy of the expression proposed in this study to estimate the inelastic demands of SSI systems with stiffness degrading structures. It is observed that the maximum differences between the target and average target ductility demands was 15%, which is considered acceptable for practical design purposes.

Damage potential has been investigated for a domestic metropolitan railway bridge subjected to 2016 Gyeongju earthquake which has been reported as the strongest earthquake in Korea. For this purpose, nonlinear static pushover analyses for the bridge piers have been carried out to evaluate ductility capacities. Then, the capacities have been compared with those suggested by Railway Design Standards of Korea. This comparison shows that all piers possess enough safety margins. Nonlinear dynamic time-history analysis has also been conducted to estimate both displacement and shear force demands for the bridge subjected to ground motions recorded at stations in near of Gyeongju. Maximum demands reveal that response under the ground motions remains essentially in elastic. In addition, for a further assessment of the bridge under the Gyeongju earthquake, fragility analyses have been performed using those ground motions. The fragility results indicate that the recorded earthquakes do not significantly affect the damage exceedance probability of the bridge piers.

When coupling beams are proportioned appropriately in coupled core wall (CCW) systems, the input energy from ground motions is dissipated primarily through inelastic deformations in plastic hinge regions at the ends of the coupling beams. It is desirable that the plastic hinges form at the beam ends while the base wall piers remain elastic. The strength and stiffness of the coupling beams are, therefore, crucial if the desired global behavior of the CCW system is to be achieved. This paper presents the results of nonlinear response history analysis of two 20-story CCW buildings. Both buildings have the same geometric dimensions, and the components of the buildings are designed based on the equivalent lateral force procedure. However, one building is fitted with steel coupling beams while the other is fitted with diagonally reinforced concrete coupling beams. The force-deflection relationships of both beams are based on experimental data, while the moment-curvature and axial load-moment relationships of the wall piers are analytically generated from cross-sectional fiber analyses. Using the aforementioned beam and wall properties, nonlinear response history analyses are performed. Superiority of the steel coupling beams is demonstrated through detailed evaluations of local and global responses computed for a number of recorded and artificially generated ground motions.
In this paper, nonlinear transonic flutter analyses of a composite missile fin considering the effect of delamination are conducted. An effective modal analysis methodology is adopted and verified with the experimental modal test data for laminated composite plates with delamination. Extended version of the in-house computational aeroelastic analysis program with the transonic small-disturbance (TSD) code is used in order to predict the flutter dynamic pressure of the delaminated composite fin models. In the subsonic, transonic, and supersonic flow regions, nonlinear time-domain flutter analyses are performed for various delamination conditions, and aeroelastic characteristics due to the delamination phenomena are examined in detail.
Dynamic soil-pile interaction is the main concern in the design of group piles under earthquake loadings. The lateral resistance of the pile group under dynamic loading becomes different from that of a single pile due to the group pile effect. However, this aspect has not yet been properly studied for the pile group under seismic loading condition. Thus, in this study the group pile effect was evaluated by performing a series of dynamic centrifuge tests on $3{\times}3$ group pile in dry loose sand. The multiplier coefficients for ultimate lateral resistance and subgrade reaction modulus were suggested to obtain the p-y curve of the group pile. The suggested coefficients were verified by performing the nonlinear dynamic analyses, which adopted Beam on Nonlinear Winkler Foundation model. The predicted behavior of the pile group showed the reasonable agreement compared with the results of the centrifuge tests under sinusoidal wave and artificial wave.
This study proposes a fast estimation method of dynamic reliability indices or failure probability for SDOF structure subjected to earthquake excitations. The proposed estimation method attempts to derive coefficient function for correcting dynamic effects from static reliability analysis in order to estimate the dynamic reliability analysis results. For this purpose, a total of 60 cases of structures with various characteristics of natural frequency and damping ratio under various allowable limits were taken into account, and various types of approximation coefficient functions were considered as potential candidate models for dynamic effect correction. Each reliability index was computed by directly performing static and dynamic reliability analyses for the given 60 cases, and nonlinear curve fittings for potential candidate models were performed from the computed reliability index data. Then, the optimal estimation model was determined by evaluating the accuracy of the dynamic reliability analysis results estimated from each candidate model. Additional static and dynamic reliability analyses were performed for new models with different characteristics of natural frequency, damping ratio and allowable limit. From these results, the accuracy and numerical efficiency of the optimal estimation model were compared with the dynamic reliability analysis results. As a result, it was confirmed that the proposed model can be a very efficient tool of the dynamic reliability estimation for seismically excited SDOF structure since it can provide very fast and accurate reliability analysis results.

In this study, a numerical approach based on mid-point integrated finite elements and a viscous boundary is proposed for time-domain wave-propagation analyses in infinite poroelastic media. The proposed approach is accurate, efficient, and easy to implement in time-domain analyses. In the approach, an infinite domain is truncated at some distance. The truncated domain is represented by mid-point integrated finite elements with real element-lengths and a viscous boundary is attached to the end of the domain. Given that the dynamic behaviors of the proposed model can be expressed in terms of mass, damping, and stiffness matrices only, it can be implemented easily in the displacement-based finite-element formulation. No convolutional operations are required for time-domain calculations because the coefficient matrices are constant. The proposed numerical approach is applied to typical wave-propagation and soil-structure interaction problems. The model is verified to produce accurate and stable results. It is demonstrated that the numerical approach can be applied successfully to nonlinear soil-structure interaction problems.
This paper proposes a nonlinear computational modeling approach for the behaviors of structural systems subjected to fire. The proposed modeling approach consists of fire dynamics analysis, nonlinear transient-heat transfer analysis for predicting thermal distributions, and thermomechanical analysis for structural behaviors. For concretes, transient heat formulations are written considering temperature dependent heat conduction and specific heat capacity and included within the thermomechanical analyses. Also, temperature dependent stress-strain behaviors including compression hardening and tension softening effects are implemented within the analyses. The proposed modeling technique for transient heat and thermomechanical analyses is first validated with experimental data of reinforced concrete (RC) beams subjected to high temperatures, and then applied to a bridge model. The bridge model is generated to simulate the fire incident occurred by a gas truck on April 29, 2007 in Oakland California, USA. From the simulation, not only temperature distributions and deformations of the bridge can be found, but critical locations and time frame where collapse occurs can be predicted. The analytical results from the simulation are qualitatively compared with the real incident and show good agreements.
