This paper presents a numerical model developed to evaluate the load-deflection and moment-curvature relationship for concrete beams strengthened externally with four different Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composite systems. The developed model considers the inelastic behavior of concrete section subjected to a combined axial force and bending moment. The model accounts for tensile strength of concrete as defined by the modulus of rupture of concrete. Based on the adopted material constitutive relations, the model evaluates the sectional curvature as a function of the applied axial load and bending moment. Deflections along the beam are evaluated using a finite difference technique taking into account support conditions. The developed numerical technique has been tested on a cantilever beam with a transverse load applied at its end. A study of the behavior of the beam with tension reinforcement compared to that with FRP areas giving an equivalent ultimate moment has been carried out. Moreover, cracking of the section in the tensile region at ultimate load has also been considered. The results indicated that beams reinforced with FRP systems possess more ductility than those reinforced with steel. This ductility, however, can be tuned by increasing the area of FRP or by combining different FRP layers.
A new piezoceramic $d_{15}$ shear-induced torsion actuation mechanism representative benchmark is proposed and its experimentations and corresponding 3D finite element (FE) simulations are conducted. For this purpose, a long and thin smart sandwich cantilever beam is dimensioned and built so that it can be used later for either validating analytical Saint Venant-type solutions or for analyzing arm or blade-based smart structures and systems applications. The sandwich beam core is formed by two adjacent rows of 8 oppositely axially polarized d15 shear piezoceramic patches, and its faces are dimensionally identical and made of the same glass fiber reinforced polymer composite material. Quasi-static and static experimentations were made using a point laser sensor and a scanning laser vibrometer, while the 3D FE simulations were conducted using the commercial software $ABAQUS^{(R)}$. The measured transverse deflection by both sensors showed strong nonlinear and hysteretic (static only) variation with the actuation voltage, which cannot be caught by the linear 3D FE simulations.

In the context of finite element method, a computational simulation is presented to study and analyze the dynamic behavior of regularly perforated functionally graded rotating beam for the first time. To investigate the effect of perforation configurations, both regular circular and squared perforation patterns are studied. To explore impacts of graded material distributions, both axial and transverse gradation profiles are considered. The material characteristics of graded materials are assumed to be smoothly and continuously varied through the axial or the thickness direction according the nonlinear power gradation law. A computational finite elements procedure is presented. The accuracy of the numerical procedure is verified and compared. Resonant frequencies, axial displacements as well as internal stress distributions throughout the perforated graded rotating cantilever beam are studied. Effects of material distributions, perforation patterns, as well as the rotating beam speed are investigated. Obtained results proved that the graded material distribution has remarkable effects on the dynamic performance. Additionally, circular perforation pattern produces more softening effect compared with squared perforation configuration thus larger values of axial displacements and maximum principal stresses are detected. Moreover, squared perforation provides smaller values of nondimensional frequency parameters at most of vibration modes compared with circular pattern.
Transient characteristics of a signal can be effectively exhibited in time-frequency domain. Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT) is one of the time-frequency domain analysis methods. HHT is known for its several advantages over other signal analysis methods. The capability of analyzing non-stationary or nonlinear characteristics of a signal is the primary advantage of HHT. Moreover, it is known that HHT can provide fine resolution in high frequency region and handle large size data efficiently. In this study, the effectiveness of Hilbert-Huang transform is illustrated by employing structural systems undergoing impact. A simple discrete system and an axially oscillating cantilever beam undertaking periodic impulsive force are chosen to show the effectiveness of HHT.
This paper presents a high precision integration method for the dynamic response analysis of structures with holonomic constraints. A detail recursive scheme suitable for algebraic and differential equations (ADEs) which incorporates generalized forces is established. The matrix exponential involved in the scheme is calculated precisely using $2^N$ algorithm. The Taylor expansions of the nonlinear term concerned with state variables of the structure and the generalized constraint forces of the ADEs are derived and consequently, their particular integrals are obtained. The accuracy and effectiveness of the present method is demonstrated by two numerical examples, a plane truss with circular slot at its tip point and a slewing flexible cantilever beam which is currently interesting in optimal control of robot manipulators.
An efficient sequential optimization approach for metamodel was presented by Choi et al [6]. This paper describes a new approach of the multilevel optimization method studied in Refs. [5] and [21-25]. The basic idea is concerned with multilevel iterative methods which combine a descent scheme with a hierarchy of auxiliary problems in lower dimensional subspaces. After fitting a metamodel based on an initial space filling design, this model is sequentially refined by the expected improvement criterion. The advantages of the method are that it does not require optimum sensitivities, nonlinear equality constraints are not needed, and the method is relatively easy to understand and use. As a check on effectiveness, the proposed method is applied to a classical cantilever beam.
The present paper describes an investigation into the application of the genetic algorithm(GA) in the optimization of structural design. Stochastic processes generate an initial population of designs and then apply principles of natural selection/survival of the fittest to improve the designs. The five test functions are used to verify the robustness and reliability of GA, and as a numerical example, minimum weight of a cantilever composite laminated beam with a mix of continuous, integer and discrete design variables is obtained by using GA with exterior penalty function method. The design problem has constraints on strength, displacements, and natural frequencies, and is formulated to a multidimensional nonlinear form. From the results, it is found that the GA search technique is very effective at finding the good optimum solution as well as has higher robustness.

This paper presents an algorithm for structural reliability with the response surface method. For this aim, an approach with three stages is proposed named as improved response surface method. In the algorithm, firstly, a quadratic approximate function is formed and design point is determined with First Order Reliability Method. Secondly, a point close to the exact limit state function is searched using the design point. Lastly, vector projected method is used to generate the sample points and Second Order Reliability Method is performed to obtain reliability index and probability of failure. Five numerical examples are selected to illustrate the proposed algorithm. The limit state functions of three examples (cantilever beam, highly nonlinear limit state function and dynamic response of an oscillator) are defined explicitly and the others (frame and truss structures) are defined implicitly. ANSYS finite element program is utilized to obtain the response of the structures which are needed in the reliability analysis of implicit limit state functions. The results (reliability index, probability of failure and limit state function evaluations) obtained from the improved response surface are compared with those of Monte Carlo Simulation, First Order Reliability Method, Second Order Reliability Method and Classical Response Surface Method. According to the results, proposed algorithm gives better results for both reliability index and limit state function evaluations.
The mechanical spring is one of widely used machine elements. Among various kinds, flat-type spring loaded by a rotating pin was studied. A flat spring was simplified to a cantilever beam, and numerical analysis was attempted. Since the loading pin rotates about a separate axis from the fixed spring or vice versa, the location, direction, and magnitude of the contact force including normal contact and friction loads vary accordingly. Meanwhile, the spring is deformed substantially as the relative motion progresses. Therefore, this problem needs to be formulated taking the follower loading characteristics and geometrical non-linearity into account. Derived nonlinear differential equation was solved to yield the spring deflection, contact force and the torque to rotate the pin, and the result was compared with a finite element solution. Also, the influences of principal design parameters were studied. The proposed methodology is expected to be useful for the design of pin-loaded flat spring and the prevention of mechanical failures in the form of yielding or fatigue failure of spring or severe wear of the components.
