In this paper, the nonlinear static response of curled cantilever beam actuators subjected to the one-sided electrostatic field is focused on. By assuming the deflection function of electrostatically actuated beam, analytical approximate solutions are established via using Galerkin method to solve the equilibrium equation. The Pull-In voltages which determine the stability of the curled beam actuators are also obtained. These approximate solutions show excellent agreements with numerical solutions obtained by the shooting method and the experimental data for a wide range of beam length. Expressions of these analytical approximate solutions are brief and could easily be used to derive the effects of various physical parameters on MEMS structures.
The electromagnetic field can cause an essential change of the dynamic behavior of the railgun. The evaluation of the dynamics performance of railgun is a mandatory task. Here, a nonlinear electromagnetic force equation of the railgun is given in which the clearance, the thickness and the width of the rail are considered. Based on it, the nonlinear electromechanical coupled dynamics equations of Euler beam rails for the railgun are proposed. Using the equations, the nonlinear free vibration frequency of the railgun is investigated and the effects of the system parameters on the frequency are analyzed. The nonlinear forced responses of the rail to the electromagnetic excitation are investigated as well. The results show that as the nonlinearity of the railgun system is considered, the vibration frequencies of the railgun system increase; as the current in the rail increases, the difference between the natural frequencies and the nonlinear vibration frequencies increases significantly; the nonlinearity of the railgun system is more obvious for smaller distance between the two rails, smaller rail thickness, and smaller stiffness of the elastic foundation; the unstable dynamics state of the rail system occurs when the armature runs to the exit of the railgun. The results are useful for design and application of the railgun system.
This paper describes a new type of replaceable fuse for moment resisting frames. Column-tree connections with beam splice connections are frequently preferred in the moment resisting frames since they eliminate field welding and provide good quality. In the column-tree connections, a part of the beam is welded to the column in the shop and the rest of the beam is bolted with the splice connection in the field. In this study, a replaceable reduced beam section (R-RBS) connection is proposed in order to eliminate welding process and facilitate assembly at the site. In the proposed R-RBS connection, one end is connected by a beam splice connection to the beam and the other end is connected by a bolted end-plate connection to the column. More importantly is that the proposed R-RBS connection allows the replacement of the damaged R-RBS easily right after an earthquake. Pursuant to this goal, experimental and numerical studies have been undertaken to investigate the performance of the R-RBS connection. An experimental study on the RBS connection was used to substantiate the numerical model using ABAQUS, a commercially available finite element software. Additionally, five different finite element models were developed to conduct a parametric study. The results of the analysis were compared in terms of the moment and energy absorption capacities, PEEQ, rupture and tri-axiality indexes. The design process as well as the optimum dimensions of the R-RBS connections are presented. It was also demonstrated that the proposed R-RBS connection satisfies AISC criteria based on the nonlinear finite element analysis results.

Nonlinear finite element analysis is conducted to predict the structural behavior of precast concrete column and steel beam connected by using bolted connections. The Nonlinear FEM program is based on the modified compression field theory which has good accuracy in the concrete structures. The link element is properly used to model the discontinuity between precast concrete column and steel beam. Predictions from the proposed model are compared with experimental results and it is concluded that structural behaviors of the composite structures, such as strength capacity, crack pattern and failure mode, can be predicted quite successfully.
We numerically demonstrate the performance of a plasmonic lens composed of an array of nanoslits perforated on thin metallic film with slanted cuts on the output surface. Embedding Kerr nonlinear material in nanoslits is employed to modulate the output beam. A two dimensional nonlinear-dispersive finite-difference time-domain (2D N-D-FDTD) method is utilized. The performance parameters of the proposed lens such as focal length, full-width half-maximum, depth of focus and the efficiency of focusing are investigated. The structure is illuminated by a TM-polarized plane wave and a Gaussian beam. The effect of the beam waist of the Gaussian beam and the incident light intensity on the focusing effect is explored. An exact formula is proposed to derive electric field E from electric flux density D in a Kerr-Dispersive medium. Surface plasmon (SPs) modes and Fabry-Perot (F-P) resonances are used to explain the physical origin of the light focusing phenomenon. Focused ion beam milling can be implemented to fabricate the proposed lens. It can find valuable potential applications in integrated optics and for tuning purposes.
In order to reduce vibration or to control shape of structures made of metal or composites, piezoelectric materials have been extensively used since their discovery in 1880's. A recent trend is also seen to apply piezoelectric materials to flexible structures made of rubber-like materials. In this paper a non-linear finite element model using updated Lagrangian (UL) approach has been developed for static analysis of rubber-elastic material with surface-bonded piezoelectric patches. A compressible stain energy function has been used for modeling the rubber as hyperelastic material. For formulation of the nonlinear finite element model a twenty-node brick element is used. Four degrees of freedom u, v and w and electrical potential ${\varphi}$ per node are considered as the field variables. PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) patches are applied as sensors/actuators or sensors and actuators. The present model has been applied to bimorph PVDF cantilever beam to validate the formulation. It is then applied to study the smart rubber components under different boundary and loading conditions. The results predicted by the present formulation are compared with the analytical solutions as well as the available published results. Some results are given as new ones as no published solutions available in the literatures to the best of the authors' knowledge.

This paper studies nonlinear free vibration characteristics of nonlocal magneto-electro-elastic (MEE) nanobeams resting on nonlinear elastic substrate having geometrical imperfection by considering piezoelectric reinforcement scheme. The piezoelectric reinforcement can cause an enhanced vibration behavior of smart nanobeams under magnetic field. All of previously reported studies on MEE nanobeams ignore the influences of geometric imperfections which are very substantial due to the reason that a nanobeam cannot be always perfect. Nonlinear governing equations of a smart nanobeam are derived based on classical beam theory and an analytical trend is provided to obtained nonlinear vibration frequency. This research shows that changing the volume fraction of piezoelectric constituent in the material has a great influence on vibration behavior of smart nanobeam under electric and magnetic fields. Also, it can be seen that nonlinear vibration behaviors of smart nanobeam are dependent on the magnitude of exerted electric voltage, magnetic potential, hardening elastic foundation and geometrical imperfection.

The 3rd order nonlinear properties show Optical bleaching (Saturation) and Reverse saturation in absorption aspect, whereas Self-focusing[3][4] and Self-defocusing in refraction aspect. Optical bleaching and Self-focusing phenomena of those properties in particular can be useful to make the optical beam spot size smaller for application on the higher optical storage density. This paper presents a fully three-dimensional numerical approach for analyzing deepwater drilling riser-conductor system vortex-induced vibrations (VIV) including nonlinear soil-structure interactions (SSI). The drilling riser-conductor system is modeled as a tensioned beam with linearly distributed tension and is solved by a fully implicit discretization scheme. The fluid field around the riser-conductor system is obtained by Finite-Analytic Navier-Stokes (FANS) code, which numerically solves the unsteady Navier-Stokes equations. The SSI is considered by modeling the lateral soil resistance force according to nonlinear p-y curves. Overset grid method is adopted to mesh the fluid domain. A partitioned fluid-structure interaction (FSI) method is achieved by communication between the fluid solver and riser motion solver. A riser-conductor system VIV simulation without SSI is firstly presented and served as a benchmark case for the subsequent simulations. Two SSI models based on a nonlinear p-y curve are then applied to the VIV simulations. Also, the effects of two key soil properties on the VIV simulations of riser-conductor systems are studied.

Recently to repair the structure of deteriorated concrete, LMC rehabilitation method is introduced. however, this method has the possible risks of brittle failure depending on bond performance of the interface. the prediction of interfacial behavior becomes essential to protect the failure. all of the studies which have been done about this field are only about material property such as strength, durability, bond. there is not enough data and studies about structural behavior and numerical analysis. therefore, in this study A flexural nonlinear analysis model of ABAQUS was proposed to predict the load-deflection response, interfacial stress, and ultimate strength. The parameter study showed that overlay thickness was a main influencing factor to the behavior of RC beam overlayed by LMC.
