Past, present and future of nondestructive testing and evaluation(NDT&E) activities in Korea are reviewed. The current status and future direction in NDT&E research and development are presented. The newly revised edition of Korean NDT personnel qualification system is described. Other activities such as NDT&E training programs, NDT field services, and professional societies and international cooperation are also summarized. Founded in 1980, the Korean Society for Nondestructive Testing is now the center of domestic activities in NDT&E as well as the gateway to the international cooperation.

The nondestructive tests(NDT) are widely applied at various industrial job sites to detect defects and flaws early and thus to diagnose the quality and integrity of components, structures and systems. This paper discusses the R&MD history of various nondestructive testing techniques, their applications and many technical as well as safety issues identified, particularly in the performance of radiography. Also discussed are the principles of inspection methods and NDT qualifications that should be applied at the industrial job sites. As a result, this paper provides suggestions for improvement in Government programs to promote th NDT industry, for more systematic operation through a direct with the owner, and also for improvement in working conditions for NDT workers.

광학적 비접촉 비파괴검사 방법인 ESPI, Shearography를 이용한 측정은 자동차나 항공기산업 등에서 최근 폭넓게 이용되고 있다. 빠른 측정 속도와 측정 대상의 전 영역을 한번에 측정할 수 있는 장점을 가진 Shearography를 이용한 비파괴검사 방법을 기존의 광계측법인 ESPI와 비교하였다. 또한 이러한 장점을 살려 산업현장에서 수행한 여러 가지 비파괴검사 사례를 제시하였다.

The purpose of this paper is to attract electrical and electronic engineering community's attention to electromagnetic nondestructive testing (NDT). Various electromagnetic NDT methods of detecting defects in materials are presented to help understand the underlying physics associated with these techniques. This understanding would provide a way to interpret the test signal to describe about the defect. In the meantime, the author hopes, one may realize how perfectly fit such a subject as electromagnetic NDT is to current curriculums of electrical and electronic engineering.
