Non-thermal plasma technology has many applications in various areas. One of the applications is regenerating diesel particulate filter (DPF). DPF is a widely applied device to control the particulate emission of diesel engines. But it needs periodic removal of clogged soot for the smooth running of engine. Conventional high-temperature removal processes easily leads to the breakage of DPF. Herein, low-temperature plasma formed in a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor was used to form active oxidants such as ozone and nitrogen dioxide. Experimentally, the effects of discharge power and frequency on the performance of DBD reactor were studied. Two oxidants, $O_3$ and $NO_2$, were synthesized and used for incinerating soot in the used DPF. Performances of the two oxidants on the reduction of soot were compared, and it was found that $NO_2$ is more effective than $O_3$ for getting rid of soot

Compounds of Ga, such as gallium oxide (Ga2O3) and gallium nitride (GaN), are of interest due to its unique properties in semiconductor application. In particular, GaN has the potentially application for optoelectronic device such as light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and laser diodes (LDs) [1]. Nanoparticle is an interesting material due to its unique properties compared to the bulk equivalents. In this report, we develop a synthesizing method for gallium nitride nanoparticle using non-thermal plasma. For gallium source, the gallium is heated by thermal conduction of tungsten boat which is heated by eddy current induced from RF current in antenna. Nitrogen source for nanoparticle synthesis are from inductively coupled plasma with N2 gas. The synthesized nano particles are analyzed using field-emission scanning microscope (FESEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The synthesized particles are investigated and discussed in wide range of experiment conditions such as flow rate, pressure and RF power.

Application of plasma technology on microbial sterilization has been frequently studied. In spite of accumulating number of studies, many have been focused on bacteria. Reports on eukaryotic yeasts and filamentous fungi are limited. In addition, mechanism of plasma effect still needs to be clarified. In this study, we analyzed the effect of non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma on the budding yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae using DBD-type device. When yeast cells were exposed to plasma (at 2 mm distance) and then cultured on YPD-agar plate, number of cells survived (shown as colony) were reduced proportionally to exposure time. More than 50% reduction in number of colonies were observed after twice exposure of 5min. each. Colonies much smaller than those of control (no plasma exposure) were appeared after twice exposure of 5 min. each. It seems that small colonies are resulted from delayed cell growth due to the damage caused by plasma treatment. Microscopic analysis demonstrates that yeast cells treated with plasma for 5 min. twice have more rough and shrinked shape compared to oval shape with smooth surface of control.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the characterization of composite resin inlay surface with silane and non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma treatment. Methods: Composite resin inlay was used as a specimen, which was treated by sandblasting + silane and sandblasting + plasma. The untreated specimens were assigned to the control group. Specimens were analyzed for surface roughness, color change, and chemical composition. Statistical analyses were performed using one-way ANOVA test (p<0.05). Results: The present findings showed that the roughness and color changes of the plasma-treated surface were significantly lower than those of the silane-treated surface. In addition, a change in the chemical composition was observed on the plasma-treated surface. Conclusions: Based on the results, non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma could be a potential tool for the cementation of composite resin inlay.

we studied the effect of the type of non-thermal plasma on the decomposition of $CF_4$. 3 types of reactors were manufactured to generate different types of plasma respectively, and went into the experiments. As the results, we found that high density of the energy of non-thermal plasma and the minimization of non-discharged area should be met in order to elevate decomposition rate of $CF_4$. Among the reactors used in the study, the hole-type reactor was such one that satisfying that requirement. Using the hole-type reactor, treatment efficiency for high concentration of $CF_4$ was excellent. We got decomposition rate of more than 95[%] between 500[ppm] around and less than 400[ppm], and up to 85[%] at 900[ppm].
Characteristics of a plasma reactor for partial oxidation of methane, especially focused on the role and effectiveness of plasma chemistry, is investigated. Partial oxidation of methane is investigated using a rotating arc which is a three dimensional version of a typical glidingarc. The rotating arc has both the characteristics of equilibrium and non-equilibrium plasma. Non-equilibrium characteristics of the rotating gliding arc can be increased by rotating an elongated arc string attached at both the tip of inner electrode and the edge of outer electrode. In this way, plasma chemistry can be enhanced and hydrogen selectivity can reach almost 100% that is much higher than thermal equilibrium condition. As a result, the present study enables the strategic approach of the plasma reforming process by means of appropriate reactor design to maximize plasma effect and resulting in maximized reaction efficiency.

Plasma medicine is an upcoming research area that has attracted the scientists to explore more deeply the utility of plasma. So, apart from the treating biomaterials and tissues with plasma, we have studied the effect of plasma with different feeding gases on modification of biomolecules. Additionally, we have checked the action of nanosecond pulsed plasma on the biomolecules. We have checked the plasma action on proteins ((Hemoglobin (Hb) Myoglobin (Mb) and lysoenzyme), calf thymus DNA and amino acids. The structural changes or structural modification of proteins and DNA have been studied using circular dichroism (CD), dynamic light scattering (DLS), gel electrophoresis, protein oxidation test, UV-vis spectroscopy and 1D NMR, while Liquid Chromatograph/Capillary Electrophoresis-Mass Spectrometer(LC/CE-MS) based qualitative bio-analysis have been used to study the modification of amino acids. We have also shown the effect of NaCl and ionic liquid on the formation of OH radicals using electron spin resonance and fluorescence techinques.
Zirconia powder containing 3 mol% yttria (3Y-PSZ) was casted on the cast iron substrate by plasma spraying method. Coated specimens were then heat treated at 500$\^{C}$ in nitrogen plasma. Wear tests were performed on nitrogen heat treated and non heat treated samples at temperatures from 25$\^{C}$ to 600$\^{C}$. Wear results showed that the friction coefficient and the wear loss of both the treated and the non-treated samples showed maximum value at 400$\^{C}$. These results were explained by low temperature thermal degradation due to the monoclinic transformation. Nitrogen plasma treatment significantly improved the tribological performance. The effect of nitrogen heat treatment on tribological behavior was explained by the increased micro-hardness and decreased monoclinic faction.

Destruction process of toluene using a wire-cylindrical BBD (Dielectric Barrier Discharge) reactor packed with catalysts was investigated to characterize the synergetic effects of non-thermal plasma and catalyst process. The catalysts used in the present study were ${\gamma}$-Al$_2$BO$_3$ and Pt/${\gamma}$-Al$_2$O$_3$. Under the numerous test conditions, specific energy density (SED (J/L)) and the conversion of toluene, defined as (1 -[C$_{f}$]/[C$_{i}$]), were measured. The test results showed that toluene decomposition efficiency followed the pseudo-first order in the case of plasma only process. The pseudo-first order process, however, was modified to pseudo-zeroth order reaction in the case of catalyst-assisted plasma process. This modification of the reaction order was verified based on a simple kinetic model proposed in the present study. Owing to the modification of reaction order, which resulted from the catalytic process, the specific energy to achieve the high removal efficiencies, i.e. 80~90%, was reduced significantly.y.y.

Carbon-based materials have been known as ablative material and have been used for thermal protection systems. Ablation is an erosive phenomenon that results in thermochemical and thermomechanical changes on materials. Ablation resistance is one of the key properties that determines performance and life-time of the thermal protection material under ablative conditions. In this study, ablation properties of graphite, 3-dimensional (C/C) composites (needle-punched type and rod type) were investigated byusing a plasma wind tunnel which produce a supersonic plasma flow from a segmented arc heater with the power level of 0.4 MW. The mass losses and surface roughness changes which contain main result of the ablation are measured. A morphological analysis ofthe carbon-based materials, before and after the ablation test, are performed through field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and non-contact 3D surface measuring system. Electronic balance and a portable surface roughness tester were used for evaluation of the recession and mass loss of the test samples.
