Group III-nitride semiconductors have been widely studied as the materials for growth of light emitting devices. Currently, GaN devices are predominantly grown in the (0001) c-plane orientation. However, in case of using polar substrate, an important physical problem of nitride semiconductors with the wurtzite crystal structure is their spontaneous electrical polarization. An alternative method of reducing polarization effects is to grow on non-polar planes or semi-polar planes. However, non-polar and semipolar GaN grown onto r-plane and m-plane sapphire, respectively, basically have numerous defects density compared with c-plane GaN. The purpose of our work is to reduce these defects in non-polar and semi-polar GaN and to fabricate high efficiency LED on non/semi-polar substrate. Non-polar and semi-polar GaN layers were grown onto patterned sapphire substrates (PSS) and nano-porous GaN/sapphire substrates, respectively. Using PSS with the hemispherical patterns, we could achieve high luminous intensity. In case of semi-polar GaN, photo-enhanced electrochemical etching (PEC) was applied to make porous GaN substrates, and semi-polar GaN was grown onto nano-porous substrates. Our results showed the improvement of device characteristics as well as micro-structural and optical properties of non-polar and semi-polar GaN. Patterning and nano-porous etching technologies will be promising for the fabrication of high efficiency non-polar and semi-polar InGaN LED on sapphire substrate.

In this study, we grew non-polar ZnO nanostructure on (1-102) R-plane sapphire substrates. As for growth method of ZnO, we used hydrothermal synthesis which is known to have the advantages of low cost and easy process. For growth of non-polar, the deposited AZO seed buffer layer with of 80 nm on R-plane sapphire by radio frequency magnetron sputter was annealed by RTA(rapid thermal annealing) in the argon atmosphere. After that, we grew ZnO nanostructure on AZO seed layer by the added hexamethylenetramine (HMT) solution and sodium citrate at $90^{\circ}C$. With two types of additives into solution, we investigated the structures and shapes of ZnO nanorods. Also, we investigate the possibility of formation of 2D non-polar ZnO layer by changing the ratio of two additives. As a result, we could get the non-polar A-plane ZnO layer with well optimized additives' concentrations.

The present research was focused to investigate the quality of non-polar SiC substrates grown by a conventional PVT method for optoelectronic applications. The half part of the PVT-grown 6H-SiC crystal boules was sliced along a-direction and m-direction to extensively analyze non-polar planes and then remaining part of that was sliced along the basal plane to produce wafers. The non-polar SiC m-plane and a-plane exhibited apparent peaks around 2 theta=$120^{\circ}$((3-300) plane) and 2 theta=$60^{\circ}$ ((11-20) plane), respectively. FWHM values of m-plane measured along a-direction and c-direction were 60 arc see and 57 arcsec respectively, a-plane measured along m-direction and c-direction were 41 arcsec and 51 arcsec respectively. The typical absorption spectra of SiC crystals indicated that each of SiC crystals were the 6H-SiC with fundamental absorption energy of about 3.04 eV. Non-polar planes contained no micropipe on etched surface. The carrier concentration and mobility of non-polar SiC wafers have estimated by Raman spectrum. It was observed that the carrier mobility is low in the area far from seed crystal with compared to other places.
The PEPS(Polar-coordinated Effective Plastic Strain) FLD(Forming Limit Diagram), a new type of FLD based on a polar representation of the EPS(Effective Plastic Strain), appears to be an effective solution to the problem of non-linear strain path effects. This method has the advantages of the familiar strain-based diagram for linear loading, but without the strain-hardening limitations of the stress-based diagram, or non-intuitive aspects of alternate Cartesian diagrams based on effective plastic strain. In the current study, the PEPS FLD was applied to the development process of an aluminum automobile-body panel, including the necking or crack prediction, die design, and die modification. As a result, the PEPS FLD provided improved formability of aluminum sheet as compared to deriving the potential formability with non-linearity.

The non-polar optical phonon scattering in the valence band depends on the masses, ratios, and types of mixtures of constituent atoms. Therefore, the random distribution of atoms in alloy semiconductors should be considered in the analysis of scattering mechanisms. For this purpose, the force equations of n atoms in a unit cell are expressed in a n x n matrix form to obtain the angular frequencies due to the acoustic and non-polar optical phonons. And, n is then assumed to be infinity. When this work is compared with other results published elsewhere, it is concluded that the independence of atomic displacement or amplitude of oscillation as ell as the infinite number of atoms in a unit cell must be taken into account for the random distribution of atoms in alloy semiconductors.

Deep-fat frying is a common cooking practice. There has been considerable concern regarding the mutagenic and carcinogenic potential of thermally oxidized oils. Studies on deep-fried foods so far have revealed not much on the mutagenicity of the oils in the foods. Therefore, in the present study, it was attempted to investigate the mutagenicity ofthe thermally oxidized safflower oil. Oil was heated in a home-fryer at a temperature of 180$\pm$3$^{\circ}C$ for 48 hours. Oil samples were taken at 0, 8, 16, 24, 32, 40 and 48 hours of heating, respectively. Each sample was used to study the changes in peroxide value (POV), acid value (AV), iodine value (IV), conjugated dienoic acid (CDA) content, %, and fatty acid composition. Another series of samples were fractionated into non-polar and polar fractions by column chromatography. The mutagenicity of the samples taken from the thermally oxidized oils, as well as the non-polar and polar fractions of the thermally oxidized oils, was investigated with the Ames test. The Ames test was carried out with and without metabolic activation. Bacterial tester strains used in the present study were the histidine auxotrophic strains of Salmonella typhimurium TA100, TA1535 and TA102 were used for the detection of base pair mutations, and TA98 and TA1537 for frame shift mutations. Each series of samples was dissolved in tetraphydrofuran (inhibitor-free) and tested at doses ranging from 0.05 to 5 mg/plate. None of the oil samples taken during the 48 hour oxidation period showed any mugagenic activity. This was the case, even after the activaton with 59 mix. Also, none of the polar and non-polar fractions showed any mutagenic activity on all the strains tested.
The heterogeneous association behaviour of various concentration binary mixtures of mono alkyl ethers of ethylene glycol with ethyl alcohol were investigated by dielectric measurement in benzene solutions over the entire concentration range at 25 ${^{\circ}C}$. The values of static dielectric constant $\epsilon_0$ of the mixtures were measured at 1 MHz using a four terminal dielectric liquid test fixture and precision LCR meter. The high frequency limiting dielectric constant $\epsilon_\infty$ values were determined by measurement of refractive index $n_D$ ($\epsilon_\infty\;=\;n_D\;^2$). The measured values of $\epsilon_0$ and $\epsilon_\infty$ were used to evaluate the values of excess dielectric constant $\epsilon^E$, effective Kirkwood correlation factor $g^{eff}$ and corrective correlation factor $g_f$ of the binary polar mixtures to obtain qualitative and quantitative information about the H-bond complex formation. The non-linear behaviour of the observed $\epsilon_0$ values of the polar molecules and their mixtures in benzene solvent confirms the variation in the associated structures with change in polar mixture constituents concentration and also by dilution in non-polar solvents. Appearance of the maximum in $\epsilon^E$ values at different concentration of the polar mixtures suggest the formation of stable adduct complex, which depends on the molecular size of the mono alkyl ethers of ethylene glycol. Further, the observed $\epsilon^E$ < 0 also confirms the heterogeneous H-bond complex formation reduces the effective number of dipoles in these polar binary mixtures. In benzene solutions these polar molecules shows the maximum reduce in effective number of dipoles at 50 percent dilutions. But ethyl alcohol rich binary polar mixtures in benzene solvent show the maximum reduce in effective number of dipoles in benzene rich solutions.

The purpose of this study was to find a suitable cosolvent to $CS_2$ so that desorption efficiency can be improved for both polar and non-polar organic solvent mixtures collected on an activated charcoal tube. Cosolvents added to $CS_2$ include: DMF(N,N-dimethylformamide): $CS_2$ (v/v 1:99), DMF:$CS_2$(v/v 3:97), BC (butyl carbitol, 2-(2-butoxy ethoxy) ethanol):$CS_2$(v/v 1:99), and BC:$CS_2$(v/v 3:97)). The results obtained were as follows : 1. Comparing the desorption efficiency of $CS_2$ with those of $CS_2$ with 1, 3, 5 % DMF and 1, 3 % BC cosolvents for two different groups of charcoal tubes each containing 8 different polar and non-polar organic solvents with 3 different concentration levels, the desorption efficiencies of the cosolvent-added $CS_2$ increased significantly for all polar organic solvents regardless of concentration levels tested. For non-polar organic solvents, no noticeable improvement was detected except xylene and trichloroethylene. The desorption efficiency of xylene increased significantly while that of trichloroethylene increased significantly at the lowest concentration level tested. 2. Either 5 % DMF or 3 % BC was the most suitable cosolvent because the desorption efficiency for non-polar organic solvent mixtures was similar or slightly improved compared with that of $CS_2$, while those of for polar organic solvent mixtures were above 75 % except for cyclohexanone. 3. The smallest variations in desorption efficiency represented by the ratio calculated from the maximum to minimum desorption efficiency for all concentration levels tested were found when 3 % BC was used as a cosolvent. The above results indicate that the desorption efficiency of $CS_2$ particularly for polar organic solvent mixtures collected on a charcoal tube can be significantly improved by the use of cosolvents such as 5 % DMF or 3 % BC. A caution, however, is in order for selecting a cosolvent whenever the cosolvent itself is being used in the workplace or the impurities contained in the cosolvent may interfere with the analytical results. In addition, to improve desorption efficiencies for such organic solvents as cyclohexanone or ketones, it is recommended to use suitable collection and desorption media other than the traditional method of charcoal tube collection/$CS_2$ desorption.

The Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway is involved in breast cancer and Myxococcus fulvus KYC4048 is a myxobacterial strain that can produce a variety of bioactive secondary metabolites. Although a previous study revealed that KYC4048 metabolites exhibit anti-proliferative effects on breast cancer, the biochemical mechanism involved in their effects remains unclear. In the present study, KYC4048 metabolites were separated into polar and non-polar (ethyl acetate and n-hexane) fractions via liquid-liquid extraction. The effects of these polar and non-polar KYC4048 metabolites on the viability of breast cancer cells were then determined by MTT assay. Expression levels of Wnt/β-catenin pathway proteins were determined by Western blot analysis. Cell cycle and apoptosis were measured via fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS). The results revealed that non-polar KYC4048 metabolites induced cell death of breast cancer cells and decreased expression levels of WNT2B, β-catenin, and Wnt target genes (c-Myc and cyclin D1). Moreover, the n-hexane fraction of non-polar KYC4048 metabolites was found most effective in inducing apoptosis, necrosis, and cell cycle arrest, leading us to conclude that it can induce apoptosis of breast cancer cells through the Wnt/β-catenin pathway. These findings provide evidence that the n-hexane fraction of non-polar KYC4048 metabolites can be developed as a potential therapeutic agent for breast cancer via inhibition of the Wnt/β-catenin pathway.
