Turbulent flow and heat transfer characteristics around staggered tube banks were studied using the 3-D Navier-Stokes equations and energy equation governing a steady incompressible flow, which were reformulated in a non-orthogonal coordinate system with cartesian velocity components and discretized by the finite volume method with a non-staggered variable arrangement. The predicted turbulent kinetic energy using RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$ model was lower than that of standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model but showed same result for mean flow field quantities. The prediction of the skin friction coefficient using RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$ model showed better trend with experimental data than standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model result. The inclined flow showed higher velocity and skin friction coefficient than transverse flow because of extra strain rate ($\frac{{\partial}w}{{\partial}y}$). Also, this was why the inclined flow showed higher local heat transfer coefficient than the transverse flow.
The flow field around a three dimensional minivan-like body has been simulated. This study solves 3-D unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on a non-orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system using second-order accurate schemes for the time derivatives, and third/second-order scheme for the spatial derivatives. The Marker-and-Cell concept is applied to efficiently solve continuity equation. The fourth -order artificial damping is added to the continuity equation for numerical stability. A H-H type multi-block grid system is generated around a three dimensional minivan-like body. Turbulent flows have been modeled by the Baldwin-Lomax turbulent model. The simulation shows three dimensional vortex-pair just behind body. And the flow separation is also observed the rear of the body. It has concluded that the results of present study properly agree with physical flow phenomena.

This paper represents the importance of dependent variables in non-orthogonal curvilinear coordinates just as the importance of those variables of convective scheme and turbulence model in computational fluid dynamics. Each of Cartesian, physical covariant and physical contravariant velocity components was tested as the dependent variables of momentum equations in the staggered grid system. In the flow past a circular cylinder, the results were computed to use each of three variables and compared to experimental data. In the skewed driven cavity flow, the results were computed to check the grid dependency of the variables. The results used in Cartesian and physical contravariant components of velocity in cylinder flow show the nearly same accuracy. In the case of Cartesian and contravariant component, the same number of vortex was predicted in the skewed driven cavity flow. Vortex strength of Cartesian component case has about 30% lower value than that of the other two cases.

The present study has been preformed to investigate the effect of obstacles around a cooling tower with air-guide to prevent recirculation. The external region as well as the cooling tower are included in the computational domain to analyze the flow phenomena around a cooling tower accurately. Three-dimensional analysis is performed using the finite volume method with non-orthogonal and unstructured grid system. The standard turbulence model is used to consider the turbulence effect. In order to investigate the recirculation phenomena, flow and temperature fields are calculated with the distance between cooling tower and obstacle, the allocated geometrical type and the air-guide. The moisture fraction rates decrease with increment of the distance between cooling tower and obstacle. The effect of air-guide to reduce the mean recirculation rate is obviously observed.

Many researches have been investigating small direct-injection diesel engines using the spray impacting on walls. Those systems have one or more raised pips to break-up the fuel and spread it widely toward a desired direction in a combustion chamber. In this study, the sizes and heights of the pips are determined by using a computational fluid dynamics code employing non-orthogonal grid systems. In order to find out the suitable pip-shape to a small chamber, the spray behaviors, occupied spary volumes and averaged droplets sizes are calculated with the variation of shape of the pip, such as, size and heights and inclined degree. The desired shape of the impinging land is proposed for the design of combustion system in small diesel engines.
The present work solved 3D incompressible RANS equation on a rotating, non-orthogonal multi-blocked grid system to efficiently analyze ducted marine propulsor with rotor-stator interaction. To handle the interface boundary between a rotor and a stator maintaining the conservative property, the sliding multiblock technique using the cubic spline interpolation and the bilinear interpolation technique were applied. To validate present code, a turbine flow having rotor- stator interaction was simulated. Time averaged pressure coefficients were compared with experiments and good agreement was obtained. After the code validation, the flowfield around a single-stage ducted marine propulsor was simulated.

The present study has been conducted to examine the effect of obstacles around a cooling tower and an air-guide to prevent recirculation. In order to analyze the interaction between external flow and cooling tower exit flow, the external region as well as the cooling, tower are included in computational domain. Two dimensional analysis is performed using the finite volume method with non-orthogonal and unstructured grid system. The standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model is used. To investigate the recirculation phenomena, flow and temperature fields are calculated with three approaches such as, the distance between cooling tower and obstacle, the allocated geometrical type, and the effect of height of obstacle. In addition, the air-guide is considered in the current computation. The mean recirculation rate increases with the height of obstacle. The effect of air-guide to reduce the mean recirculation rate is obviously observed.

A good agreement with other numerical results is achived. After code validation, the flows around a mimivan-like body are simulated. The simulation shows three dimensional vortex-pair just behind body. The flow separation is also observed on the rear of the body. The noise sources from a rotating cylinder were identified to describe the blunt trailing edge noise. Firstly, LES formulation was applied to a non-orthogonal grid system and was tested with three-dimensional cross-flow over a cylinder with a yaw angle. The computed far-field noise showed peaks at Strouhal numbers ranging from 0.135 to 0.165 for the yawed cylinder flow with end-plates placed at both extremes under the yaw angle of $30^{\circ}$ and Reynolds number of $1.15{\times}10^4$. It was observed that the slantwise shedding at angles other than the cylinder yaw angle is intrinsic to inclined cylinder, with the result of shedding angles between $15^{\circ}$ and $31^{\circ}$. To study the trailing-edge wake thickness and unsteady lift-coefficient distribution in the span-wise direction of a rotating fan blade, the flows around rotating cylinder with 1,000 rpm were simulated and the far-field noise was exactly computed using the Ffowcs-Williams and Hawkings equation with quadrupole source term. The incoming velocities and stagnant zones were continuously distributed along the cylinder, and their changes made the Strouhal sheddings to occur at different phases even at almost same Strouhal number.

Numerical prediction of the pollutant dispersion over a two-dimensional hilly terrain is presented. The dispersion model used in the present work is based on the gradient diffusion theory and the finite-volume method on a non-orthogonal boundary-fitted grid system. The numerical model is validated by comparing the results with the available experimental data for the flat-floor dispersion within a turbulent boundary-layer. The numerical error analysis is performed based on the guideline of Kasibhatla et al.(1988) for the elevated-source dispersion in the flat-floor boundary layer having a power-law velocity and linear eddy-diffusivity profile. The influences of the two-dimensional hilly terrain on the dispersion from a continuously released source are numerically investigated by changing the emission locations and heights. It is found that the distributions of ground-level concentration are strongly influenced by the source location and the emission height. Hence, the terrain amplification factor is greatly enhanced when the pollutant source is located within a flow separation region. Dispersion from a source of short duration is also simulated and the duration time of the pollutant is compared at several downstream locations on a hilly terrain. The results of the numerical prediction are applied to the evaluation of environmental impacts due to the automobile exhausts at the seashore highway with a parallel mountain range.
