An experimental study was conducted to find the effect of DBD plasma on the flammability limits of inert-gas-diluted fuel. The results showed that the concentration of diluting nitrogen at flammability limit increased when nitrogen-diluted methane and propane were reformed by plasma, while it decreased when nitrogen-diluted ethylene was reformed by plasma. Gas chromatography results suggested that the fuel type dependence of flammability limits is due to the difference in the concentrations of hydrogen and hydrocarbon species in reformed fuel.
In the present study, a systematic chemical kinetic calculations were made to investigate the augmentation of NO-$NO_2$ conversion due to the addition of various hydrocarbons (methane, ethylene, ethane, propene, propane) in the nonthermal plasma treatment. It is included in the present conclusion that the reaction between hydrocarbon and oxygen radicals induced by electron collision, is believed to be a primarily process for triggering the overall NO oxidation and the eventual NOx reduction. Upon the completion of the initiating step, various radicals (OH, $NO_2$ etc.) successively produced by hydrocarbon decomposition form the primary path of NO-$NO_2$ conversion. When the initiating step is not activated, hydrocarbon consumption rate appeared to be very low, thereby the targeted level of NO conversion can only be achieved by the addition of more input energy. Present study showed ethylene and propene to have higher affinity with 0 radical under all conditions, thereby both of these hydrocarbons show very fast and efficient NO-$NO_2$ oxidation. It was also shown that propene is superior to ethylene in the aspect of NOx removal.

Measurements of non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHC) were carried out in the Sangdo tunnel and on a nearby roadway in Seoul during the during the periods of heavy(low speed with ∼20km h(sup)-1) and light(high speed with ∼60kmh(sup)-1) traffic in February 2000. In the tunnel, the total NMHC levels during the heavy traffic period were higher than those during the light traffic period by a factor of 2. This was due to the increase of emissions at the low vehicle speed period and the higher dilution effect derived from faster flow of tunnel air at the high vehicle speed period. The average total NMHC concentration in the tunnel was 1.7 times as high as that on the roadway. The species with the highest concentration in the tunnel was ethylene(50.1 ppb), followed by n-butane(34.1 ppb) and propane (21.9 ppb). The concentration ranking in the tunnel was generally in good agreement with that on the roadway, suggesting that the NMHC compositions in the tunnel and on the nearby roadway were primarily determined by vehicle exhausts. However, the NMHC compositions in the Sangdo tunnel do not agree well with other foreign study results, reflecting that the characteristics of vehicle exhausts of Seoul is different from those of other cities. The most prominent difference between this study and other studies is the high mass fractions of butanes and propane. It was be attributed to the wide use of butane-fueled vehicles.

During the 11 year period of 1995-2005, there was about a 40% increase in the world copper demand mainly because of the Asian economic growth. In the increase, about a half was consumed by China. Most of the China's copper demand increase has been taken place over the final 5-6 years of that period. The growth is expected to continue for several years, and in 10 years or sooner the same situation is expected for India. Copper is the third metal in global demand, but its little abundance in the Earth's crust is not well recognized. From the production rate and the abundance, a copper shortage, or crisis, has a high probability than the other metals. Deep ocean mineral resources such as manganese nodules in the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zones, Kuroko-type massive seafloor sulfides (SMS), and cobalt-rich manganese crusts in the EEZ and the high sea areas have big potentials for the future sources. We need to re-evaluate their potentials as copper resources and other metals to realize their developments. The same situation is under progress in the hydro-carbon markets. Methane hydrates that are classified into non-conventional hydro-carbon resources have an important role as the future sources, too.

Hazardous Air Pollutants (HAPs) are difficult to measure, analyze and assess for risk because of low ambient concentrations and varieties. Types of HAPs are Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) and Aldehydes. HAP emissions from vehicles are a contributor to serious adverse health effects in urban areas. In this study, hazardous air pollutant emissions from road transport vehicles by Non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOC) weight fraction and PAHs emission factors are estimated in 2008. The top-five-most hazardous air pollutant emissions were estimated to toluene 864.3 ton/yr, acrolein 690.6 ton/yr, acetaldehyde 554.5 ton/yr, formaldehyde 498.7 ton/yr, propionaldehyde 421.6 ton/yr in 2008. The results for a cancer and non-cancer risk assessment of HAPs emissions show that the major cancer driver is formaldehyde and the non-cancer driver is acrolein.

To analyze the characteristics of ozone formation, measurements of the concentrations of individual exhaust hydrocarbon species have been made under various engine operating parameters in a 2-liter 4-cylinder engine for natural gas and LPG. Tests were performed at constant engine speed, 1800 rpm for two compression ratios of 8.6 and 10.6, with various operating parameters, such as excess air ratio of 1.0~1.6, bmep of 250~800 na and spark timing of BTDC 10~$55^{\circ}$. It was found that the natural gas gave the less ozone formation than LPG in various operating conditions. This was accomplished by reducing the emissions of propylene($C_3H_6$), which has relatively high maximum incremental reactivity factor, and propane($C_3H_8$) that originally has large portion of LPG. In addition, the natural gas show lower values in the specific reactivity and brake specific reactivity. Higher compression ratio of the test engine showed higher non methane HC emissions. However, specific reactivity value decreased since fuel species of HC emissions increase. brake specific reactivity showed almost same values under high bmep, over 500kPa for both fuels. This means that the increase of non methane HC emissions and the decrease of specific reactivity with higher bmep affect each other simultaneously. With advanced spark timing, brake specific reactivity values of LPG were increased while those of natural gas showed almost constant values.

This study is carried out to determine the concentration of the ozone and the factors affecting the variation of ozone concentration in the ambient air in Seoul. The one-hour average concentration of ozone $(O_3)$, sulfur dioxide $(SO_2)$, nitrogen oxides (NO and $NO_2$), suspended particulate (TSP), carbon monoxide (CO) and non-methane hydrocarbon (NMHC) at 5 sites in Seoul measured from September to October in 1983 and 1984 were analysed statistically along with meteorological data for the same period. The results were as follows; 1. The average concentrations of ozone at 5 sites during the period ranged from 3.3 to 9.1 ppb, they were below 20 ppb of the ambient air quality standard of Korea. 2. The maximum hourly concentration of ozone occurred between 2 and 3 p.m. in a day and concentration at night were very low but higher concentrations were observed at around 4 a.m. 3. The concentration ratio between NO and $NO_2$ in Seoul was relatively lower than that for the cities of foreign countries reported so far. 4. The ozone concentration has negative correlationships with the concentration of other primary pollutants$(SO_2, NO, NO_2, CO and NMHC)$ in simple regression analyses. 5. The ozone concentration was positively correlated to wind speed, temperature and insolation intensity but negatively correlated to relative humidity. 6. Stepwise multiple regression analysis of the ozone concentration to the pollutants and meteorological factors indicate that insolation intensity and $[NO_2]/[NO]$ were the primary influencing factors. 7. The three factors of insolation intensity, $[NO_2]/[NO] and NO_2$ concentration had a significant combined effect on the ozone concentration $(r^2 = 0.47-0.57)$.

In order to investigate the character of air pollution by heavy metals and to elucidate the possible sources in Seoul city, this study was performed to measure the concentrations of heavy metals of total suspended particulate and air pollutants such as $SO_2, NO_2, CO, CH_4$, Non-methane hydrocarbon, ozone at the residential-traffic area (shinchon dong) in January and February, 1986. The results are as follows: 1. $SO_2$ and TSP concentration were 135ppb and 167 $\mug/m^3$ in average, respectively. 2. While concentrations of heavy metals such as Fe, Cu, Pb in the ambient air seems gradually decreasing annually, Ni compound has been shown the tendency of increasing. 3. Among heavy metals in TSP analysed, the iron was detected at the highest level, 0.905% and the cadimium was the lowest 0.004% in average, respectively. 4. V, Fe and Zn compounds in air were observed to be highly correlated with their correlation coefficients(r) higher than 0.7. Pb compound was highly correlated to the levels of Zn and Fe, however relatively less correlated to V compound. 5. Among concentrations of heavy metals in the particulates, V and Ni compounds were highly correlated with coefficient(r) of 0.8587; the cause might be imagined by the fact of releasing from combustion of fuel oil. Fe, Pb and Zn compounds were highly correlated $SO_2$ concentration. It might be explained that they were released by combustion of coal. 6. The level of $SO_2$ was highly correlated to most of heavy metals: especially correlation coefficient(r) to Pb compound was 0.9081. Pb compound was also highly correlated to NO, CO and TSP. TSP showed higher correlation to Pb and Cd compounds than to V and Ni compounds. It might be assumed that particulate was mainly produced by combusting coal from space heating and by exhausting gasoline and diesel oil from transportation rather than by burning fuel oil.
The environmental behavior of $SO_2$ was investigated in terms of the factors affecting the temporal variabilities by analyzing the data sets obtained from the Yongsan district in Seoul from 2004 till 2013. To this end, the relationship between $SO_2$ and relevant parameters including particulate matters (such as $PM_{2.5}$, $PM_{10}$, and TSP (total suspended particulates)) and gaseous components ($CH_4$, CO, THC (total hydrocarbon), NMHC (non-methane hydrocarbon), NO, $NO_2$, NOx, and $O_3$) was investigated in several aspects. Over a decade, the annual mean concentrations of $SO_2$ varied in the range of $4.36-5.86nmole\;mole^{-1}$ (min-max) which was about five times lower than the regulation guideline set for the air quality management in Korea. In fact, this pattern greatly contrasts with some other air pollutants of which concentrations exceeded their guideline values significantly. According to our analysis, $SO_2$ was strongly correlated to the temperature and other relevant parameters. The overall results of this study confirm that the administrative regulation of $SO_2$ levels has been made effectively relative to other airborne pollutants.
