  • In case of the limitation of Deep RIE fabrication for Micro Gas Turbine, bearing aspect ratio is limited in very small value. The characteristics such as pressure distribution load capacity and non-linearity of a short bearing of L/D=0.083 and a conventional bearing of L/D=1.0 with coupled boundary effects are investigated far Micro Gas Tlubine bearings. The coupled efffect was analyzed by mass conservation at coupled end area. The results, increasing load capacity and non-linearity due to the coupled effect of thrust and journal bearing, are obtained and the selection of journal bearing type is discussed.

  • During the drawing of reentrant section like a spline, the unfilled in the corner of dies or the bended product emerges from the large reduction of area, the complex shaped sections and other nonuniform properties in material and lubrication conditions. In this study, the drawing of the spline section with the non-rotary symmetry from a circular aluminum billet has been analyzed by using commercial code DEFORM-3D. A new die construction method preventing the spline from the drawback of bending and the unfilled defect has been suggested and verified through the analysis using centroid shift method and the hybrid construction between converged and diverged profile.

  • In this paper, electrical discharge machined (EDM) surfaces machined with various machining parameters are characterized and simulated. Three-dimensional surface topography of EDM surfaces are measured by a stylus instrument. Surface topography is characterized with auto-correlation coefficient and height probability density functions. Then, EDM surfaces are modeled and computer-simulated by using the non-causal 2-D auto-regressive model. Simulation results show that EDM surfaces are characterized well by a few parameters.

  • This paper presents the results of thermoelastic wear phenomena in ventilated disk brakes for a high-speed train using finite element method. The computed results show that the sinusoidal distortions due to non-uniform distributions of temperature profiles may lead to thermoelastic wears at the rubbing surface. This may decrease the life of a disk brake and produce micro-cracks, noise and squeals between two rubbing surfaces.

  • Composite plating is a method of co-depositing fine particles of metallic, non-metallic compound or polymers in the plated layer to improve material properties such as were-resistance, lubrication, or corrosion resistance. Graded Ni-Sic composite coating were produced in this research. Prior to produce Graded Ni-SiC composite coatings, effects of particle size, particle content, pH of electrolyte, temperature, current density, stirring rate on the amount of SiC deposited in the Ni layer were investigated. By manipulating current density and plating time properties of these coating were evaluated by micro-indentation hardness test.

  • DLC films due to their extreme properties have attracted a lot of attention. In this study, the films were prepared on High Speed Steel (SKH2) by microwave plasma assisted CVD method using CH4. Every friction test under the normal load 2,5N and sliding velocity of 20,25mm/s in high vacuum (5${\times}$10$\^$-5/ Torr). The films were analyzed with Raman spectroscopy. The films failed immediately in vacuum due to high friction. Wear volume of DLC coated disks decreased more than that of non-DLC coated disks. Also, hardness of the films is about 600HV.

  • In this study, flow factors are evaluated in terms of kurtosis using random rough surface generated numerically. As h/$\sigma$become large ø$\sub$x/, ø$\sub$y/, ø$\sub$fp/, approach to 1 and ø$\sub$s/, ø$\sub$fs/ to 0 asymptotically regardless of kurtosis. ø$\sub$x/, ø$\sub$y/, ø$\sub$fp/ increase with increasing kurtosis in the mixed lubrication regime. ø$\sub$s/, ø$\sub$fs/ is associated with an additional flow transport due to the combined effect of sliding and roughness. As h/$\sigma$ decreases ø$\sub$s/, ø$\sub$fs/ increase up to a certain point, and then decrease toward zero. This behavior can be attributed to the increasing number of contacts in the mixed lubrication regime. ø$\sub$x/ in the presence of elastic deformation on the surface is larger than ø$\sub$x/ in the absence of it because local film thickness(h$\sub$T/) increases by elastic deformation.

  • Tapered roller bearings are widely used in equipment where high combined thrust and radial loads are experienced. A certain amount of tilting between the tapered rollers and the races always occurs because of bending moment load conditions and shaft deflection. It is now well understood that a coherent elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) film separates the rollers and races. In spite of extensive study on EHL problems for over half a century, relatively few studies have focused on the finite line contacts problem. This study presents a complete numerical analysis of the effects of roller tilting on the EHL characteristics in a tapered roller bearing. We systematically analyze this highly nonlinear problem using finite differences with fully non-uniform grids and the Newton-Raphson method. Detailed EHL pressure distributions and film shapes are presented under moderate loads and material parameters. A very small roller tilting significantly affects the pressure distributions and film shapes near both ends of the roller. Moreover, the effect of tilting on the EHL characteristics at the small end is much greater than that at the large end. Therefore, in designing optimum profiles for tapered roller bearings, the profile radius should be larger at the small end.
